INTRODUCTION G0100 =============================================================================== Welcome to 'Law of the West' for the NES, released by Pony Canyon in 1987. It was only released in Japan. This game is a text adventure with some action elements. To play you need to have extensive knowledge of the Japanese language. Thus this walkthrough is intended for players who are able to read and understand the story. You can still try to select the talk options without understanding them, but if you do not comprehend the story then there is little point in playing the game. OVERVIEW & CONTROLS G0200 =============================================================================== Controls: ````````` A/B Talk/Shoot D-Pad Draw/Holster Gun, Aim Gun, Select Topics START Starts the game, Pause/Unpause during the game Gameplay: ````````` That game takes over most of the action automatically. You have to select one of four topics of conversation to speak with the current character. Your overall aim is to find out about crime that is about to happen, or might have happened before. Choosing the right topics will yield extra points. The aim is to survive the entire game without dying. There is no proper ending, but instead this is an old style "if" game. You have eleven mini-scenarios and get an ending from different conversations. It is up to you if you want to be nice or rude to a character, just be aware of some consequences of shifty-looking individuals. By moving the cursor up and beyond the topics, you draw the gun and can shoot around. The only reason you want to do that is to shoot the white bandits that pop up in the background, however, not the characters you speak to. They might draw a gun at you if you offended them, so you can gun them down before taking damage. You only have 2 sheriffs starts for the entire game, but you obtain more from scoring points. Killing a character, even for self-defense, results in 0 points for this scenario. The problem is that once you gotten the character to the point that they want to shoot you, you are given very little choice. Just don't get to this point in the first place! Each level has white bandits pop up in the background. Sometimes they will just hang about and do nothing, but they might also shoot you or the character. Take them out quickly, which also results in a small point bonus. You have 11 scenarios to go through, and get the most points by beating them well. All of them are set and there are no random factors, so once you know how to beat them with the best score you can just repeat it each time. Finally, if you are playing this game without any Japanese knowledge, a tip if you are stuck getting the conversations going. The character won't start talking to you if your gun is pulled out, for example from shooting the bonus or a white bandit. Holster your weapon and they will start talking. Scoring: ```````` Completing a scenario successfully is worth 100 x 100 points, i.e. 10,000. If you get the special result from it there is an extra 50,000 point reward. There are usually just very few ways to get it. At a certain point in the conversation a white bandit might pop up in the background. There is also special bonus for individual characters. Finally, a cash bonus is hidden somewhere in the scenery and you need to shoot around to find it. Shoot once to make the $-sign appear, then again to get the reward. =============================================================================== 03.) MINI-REVIEW GYY00 =============================================================================== This isn't meant to be a full review, just a few notes about the game's pros and cons as well as other things worth mentioning. Gameplay: 3/10 There is very little on offer here. It is a simulation, if they added some motion pictures like in later games, might make more sense rather than these ugly sprites and boring conversations you have to read yourself. It is supposed to feel like you are in movie, but it doesn't. There ARE lots of scenarios to get through with plenty of outcomes and different storylines, but I highly doubt it keeps you entertained if all you play for are points. Graphics: 4/10 Blocky, ugly buildings and horrid colors. The only detailed thing is the sheriff's arm and that is not very important. The displays are also in ugly font, this is just a really poor design job. The only up side I see from these graphics are that it does feel like a western town. Sound: 3/10 There is very little music, and that is mainly between scenarios. It is from a Western movie, and just badly out of place. Even if you get 0 points it is the same 'happy' tune. The sound effects are horrible too. For example you get the cart riding in the background and some digital gun shots. That is all you hear throughout the levels. Choosing a conversation should also not make a sound, it just feels wrong. Overall: 3/10 Fun for like a couple of playthroughs, and that is only if you understand what they are talking about.
