Introduction High Speed is a pinball game that, as its name indicates, is played at high speed. The object of this game is to score as many points as you can (duh) so you can feel really good about yourself. It took me about two hours to top the high score of some 52,000,000, but it was well worth it (even though the game doesn't remember your score). If you like pinball, this game will have you hooked. If not, you will probably get tired of it really soon. Either way, the graphics and sounds are very good for this stage in the evolution of video games. In my opinion, it is the best game ever made for the NES. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. A - Right Flipper, Top Flipper B - Shake Right Select - Shake Left Start - Pause to Menu ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D. Basics To start the game, you will see the ball pop into the launcher. Hold down the "A" button to pull back, and let go to fire it out. The longer you hold the button, the harder the release. If you shot it hard enough, it will fly around the top of the machine, called the "Freeway", and come shooting around the other side. Now, here is where you win and lose in this game. You will see a flipper on the top right of the screen, also controlled by the "A" button. The purpose of this flipper is to redirect the ball around that loop, and every time the ball passes under the incredibly 3-D light there, it will slowly change to red. The sole purpose of this game is to run the red light, to "getaway" from the cops. (Don't let your soon-to-be drivers play this game, for it might give them ideas). To run a red light, you have to hit it around this loop about seven times. If you have voices turned on (in the pause menu), a policeman's voice will be heard, relaying a message that you are about to get away. After you finally manage to knock it through, you have officially "got away". Some cool effects, and a change of music will indicate your success, and two more balls will pop into the launcher. Fire them off, and you will now be playing with three balls. Now the object of playing with three balls is to win the jackpot. Once again, our little friend, the loop up by the top flipper, is the gateway to the jackpot. All enemies are gone, so there are no distractions, and this is where things get high speed. For the beginners out there, its hard enough to keep one ball afloat, and even harder with three, but it is still a completely enjoyable experience. By just keeping the balls up in the table, your points accumulate in the bottom left-hand screen. The jackpot starts at 250,000, and continues on up the more you whip the balls around the table. Once you accumulate some points, fire a ball around the loop, and bingo, flashing lights and bells and whistles go off, and you obtain your prize. A good jackpot to aim for is about 1,000,000, and is a quick and easy way to raise your score. But unfortunately, all good things must end, and no matter how good you are, the balls will always bounce funny off of each other, and go down the drain. You return to the monotonous music (if you have it turned on) and all the enemies and antagonists return. Sometime in the future, you will use your ball, either by having it go down the drain or by blowing a kick-back (one of those things on the outside of the flipper paths. Aint those annoying?!?). The black space screen will throw in your bonus, depending on how well you did, and you will continue on to your next turn. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E. Bonus Levels There are two different bonus levels: 1. The Racing bonus level (unlocked by collecting three helicopters on the main table),and... 2. The shooting bonus level (unlocked by collecting three safes on the main table). The object of the racing bonus level is to win (duh again). Once you collect three helicopters, one will fly onto the screen, and you simply shoot the balls up the ladder. The more you have, the more you will play with in the bonus level. The screen will shut, and reopen with a brand new table in front of you. Your car, as indicated, is the red one. When you hit your car with a pinball, is boosts up, and when you hit the green, purple, or blue cars, they spin out. Occasionally, a little gasoline can will appear on the outer edge of the table, and when a ball passes through it, your car will automatically speed up for a second. Also, objects on the table (i.e. trees, or hay, or houses) will blow up after being struck a few times with a ball. Some of these obstacles contain help, such as an addition of 15 seconds, or a "b" symbol, which indicates you should hit the "B" button, making all other cars spin out. The courses change with each new advance in levels (that means getting 1st place). A big bonus will occur if you win, and this is another easy way to earn quick points. The object of the shooting bonus level is to put a ball in all of the little holders. Once you collect three safes, one will magically pop out of the table and open up, and you simply shoot and score (just like hockey). The more balls you put in the safe, the more time you will have: 59 seconds with one, 79 seconds with two, and 99 seconds with three. This game is as simple as it seems, although the game can cheat you a little bit when it comes to a ball sticking in a holder. Once in a while, a little clock will pop up on the exterior, and a ball passing through that with cause you gain five seconds more on the clock. You only have so many balls to shoot away before they run out, so don't think you've got an unlimited amount of bullets in your AK-47. They take time to regenerate, and the more balls you have remaining when you finish, the more points you get. Awesome. The first couple levels are cake, but the later levels are a tad on the difficult side. After you earn enough points by completing enough levels, a fireworks display will be made for you entertainment... and also announces that you can now unlock a big bonus. See more about bonuses in Section G, Upgrades. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- F. Enemies This game has the most annoying enemies, or antagonists, in any game that I have ever played. Here is a list of all that I have encountered(with my own made-up names, of course)... 1. Blue Fuzz - A misty looking patch that will slow your ball down a touch. Whipping through it will take care of it easily. 2. Tumbleweed - A yellow ball that rolls around mid-table. Super annoying, will suck your ball in and drag it down towards the drain. Tilting the table, using "B" and "Select" alternately, will cause it to evaporate, and free your previously trapped ball. 3. Chemical bomb - A small yellow ball that floats down towards your bottom flippers, slowly eating away at hem, and causing the to fall off. Hitting it with your pinball will cause it to explode, or tilting the table with "B" and "Select" can cause it to vanish. Be careful, though, not to tilt. 4. Flying bomb - A black bomb with propellers. Hitting it with your pinball will cause it to explode, or flipping your flipper really fast might make it blow up without harming your flipper. 5. Black Shadow - A bigger, badder version of the blue fuzz. This shadow will engulf your ball, and aim it perfectly to fall down the drain unless your tilt the table quickly, using "B" and "Select". 6. Highway Block - Probably the stupidest and most useless enemy in the game. All it does id pop up and down, blocking the highway. It simply takes two shots from in front, or one from the back to destroy it. 7. The High Score Man - A Technicolor version of Elvis. The same guy who is used as the initial putter-inner dude at the end of the game, he stands down "in the slot" and tries to spin your ball down the drain. A few good shots to his bulbous self should take care of him, though. 8. Magnet Copter - An annoying enemy, who sits in the middle of your table with a magnet to take your ball and go bye-bye. This enemy pretty much restrains you from doing anything with the bottom flippers, and will eventually suck up your ball and try to fly away. Tilting the table with "B" and "Select" should make him come back and explode all over the place, making your view messy, but returning your ball to you as well. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- G. Upgrades As I said earlier, you can receive upgrades by completing bonus rounds and earning mucho grande points. The first new upgrade you can get is the right side kick-back. This is extremely useful, because your ball loves to venture down the "outside paths". A message will tell you, after returning from the bonus round, to "collect in hole", which is right up by your top flipper. When you hit this hole, a spinner lips around, the ball disappears, and then "ploops" out on the immediate right side, then available to be redirected by the top flipper. Anyway, this will automatically work the first couple of times, but then must be recharged by entering the flipper path while it is flashing. The second upgrade is ball return. It is as simple as it sounds: while playing with one ball, and it happens to venture downwards, it will be shot back up once, complimentary, of course. The third upgrade isn't really and upgrade. A spaceship comes floating downward after collecting the ball in hole, and will emit a beam for you to hand over your ball to it. It will rise, and a cut scene will appear, telling you that "YOU HAVE BEATEN THE SYSTEM... SO FAR...", and will add 1,000,000 to your score.
