What's New -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Version 1.0 (8/6/13): The first version. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 2. Introduction -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Hard Drivin' is a driving game for the NES, made by Tengen and never actually released. It exists only as an unfinished prototype. Nonetheless, it features blocky 3D graphics and two gameplay modes. You can either race on a more standard track, or a stunt track with obstacles like a vertical loop and open drawbridge. There are also intermittent cars who share the road with you so you are not entirely along, but it still has that feeling anyway. If you like playing prototypes, seek this out, otherwise you are not missing much. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 3. Controls -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Control Pad: Move car during race, move cursor up/down on menu screen, shift gears up/down (Manual transmission) A: Accelerate (hold) B: Brake Select: Change options on menu screen Select: Pause/resume game ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 4. Overview -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ================= Pre-Race Settings ================= After you get past both the title and map screens, you will get to change a few basic settings before the race begins. You can choose from the following: Transmission Type: Auto/Manual Course to Race: Stunt/Speed Game Difficulty: Easy (1:40)/Medium (1:32)/Hard (1:24)/Nasty (1:16) The difference between the Stunt and Speed Courses are fairly obvious. On the Stunt Course, there will be obstacles along the track such as a vertical loop, a half-up drawbridge, and a couple of pits you drive in and out of. Whereas on the Speed Course, there are no such obstacles with more straight- aways. Once you are pleased with your settings, press Start and the game will begin. =============== During The Race =============== When the race begins, your view will take up most of the screen above your console. The console itself shows your speed (MPH), RPMs, score, lap time, and time remaining (center). The "Beat to Challenge" time doesn't seem to have any bearing in this prototype, so I wouldn't be concerned about that (if this is incorrect, let me know). Your score increments as you drive; the faster you go, the quicker it rises. While you drive, there will be other cars on the road every now and then, so try your best to avoid them. If you crash, either into a car or an off-road obstacle, or by staying off the road beyond the countdown that appears, you will be placed back on the track several seconds behind where you were. It seems that if you crash more than a couple of times, your game will pretty much end. Before you reach a turning segment, you will see yellow signs alongside the road, so be prepared. You do not lose speed when you hear the squealing sound, but you may go off road if you are going too fast! At roughly the halfway point on either track is a Checkpoint of sorts. Passing through it adds an additional 40 seconds to your time counter. If you run out of time before reaching the end of the lap, the game is over of course. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 5.
