Introduction ---------------- My grandpa knew his NES games, and Golf was his favorite, hands down. He sleeped, breathed, and dreamed the game, memorizing every hole, knowing every approach. All the sounds he heard in his head were the only four sound effects in the game, playing over and over again. He was the best at it, beating my five-year-old self every chance he got. Unfortunately, my grandpa couldn't play golf in real life because he usually just ended up coming home with a thrown-out back and a bad mood. Anyway, before he passed on, he tutored me in the art, practicing with me constantly, teaching me everything he knew. I think he would be happy to know that his training is now to be passed on to whomever reads this guide. This one's for you, grandpa. 2. Overview And Controls -------------------------- If anyone doesn't know how to play the art that is golf, here's a quick rundown: Hit the ball in the cup with your club, in as few strokes as possible. That's about it. Every year, thousands of people spend all this money on all kinds of stuff for the sport, just to do something as simple as that. Fortunately for you and me, we only had to pay $50 for the whole game back in the day, and you can now get it for free from a ROM site, or about 50 cents at your local video game retailer. The complete game of golf, all in a convient package. Priceless. Here are the controls for the masterpiece that is Golf: D-Pad ------- Up-Down - Selects a club Left-Right - Aims shot A Button - Starts and stops the power bar START - Selects a menu option 3. The Power Meter -------------------- Ah, the power behind the stroke. The moment of impact can be a beautiful thing, and the whiff can be the ugliest. You don't want to whiff. To not whiff, you have to hit the A Button on the white spot on the power bar. If you miss the white bar, you'll slice, or miss altogether. Here's the rundown. Each club has a unique white spot you have to hit on it to not whiff. The putter is the only club without a white spot. Woods have the smallest white spots, while irons have larger ones. To hit the white spot, hit A to start the power meter, watch the arrow, and hit A again when the arrow is directly below the white spot. That's about it. Remember power, though. You don't have to hit full power everytime. When you want to go a shorter distance, only wait for the arrow to get halfway up the blue part before you hit A again. It's a piece of cake once you get used to it. 4. The Correct Way To Putt --------------------------- I hate putting so much. It drives me insane. I can get on the green in two shots, and then waste ten shots trying to putt it in. It's not that the holes are rigged or anything. It's just so hard to judge how much power to put into a shot. Also, those damn slopes play a big part too. Every green has slopes. You can tell a green has a slope by the way the little V's are pointing. If they point down, the ball will tends to travel down when you putt. Therefore, if you are putting against the slope, you need more power, and when you are putting with the slope, you should use less. ITS ALWAYS BETTER TO USE LESS THAN MORE. Trust me on this one, if you're not sure how much power to use, use as little as possible. Overdoing it usually results in you knocking yourself off the green, then having to putt back on the green again, wasting a stroke. Less is more. 5. Welcome To The Links ------------------------ After playing for a little while, I wrote down the exact direction to hit the ball and with what club so I got as low a score as possible. My observations might be off if there is a high wind or you don't get many perfect or near-perfect shots. You should hit the ball full-power everytime if you follow this guide. Remember, though, this guide will only get you to the hole, and won't help you putt. That's the hard part:) Directions ----------- N NNW ! NNE NW ! NE WNW ! ENE W------------ ------------E WSW ! A Little Coaching --------------------- - The wind really doesn't do much in this game, so don't worry about it unless it's over 10 MPH. - Practice makes perfect. Since there isn't many directions to shoot the ball, and wind isn't too much of a factor, you can basically memorize where to hit the ball each time to know how to get birdies. This should at least work for your long game... - ...because the short game is horrible in this game. It's all luck, all the time. Just try to putt in the general direction of the hole, and follow my putting tips above. Well, that's all the information I'm going to give you.
