Rivera and Kristian John Strømmen Version 1.00 2003 Final Fantasy 3j is copyright 1990 Square(c) This FAQ is copyright CyberPlanet Industries Consumer Affairs Dept. 1. OnionKid2002 http://cyberplanet.ath.cx:99/ timekeeper2021@fastmail.fm 2. Sir Bahamut kristian.strommen@c2i.net -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Table of Contents I Introduction II Background Information III Stats IV Sylx Tower a. The Dragons V Upgrade Trick VI Credits -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I Introduction Hello all! This is both my (OnionKid2002) and Sir Bahamut's third FAQ. This time, we focus on the phenomenon known as the FEOK. FEOK is short for Fully Equipped Onion Knight. It is one thing everyone who has played Final Fantasy 3(j) should know. It is not as widely known to all as it should be and we thought it was about time someone wrote something about it. Just a few notes: • We may put spoilers in this guide unknowingly. But nothing too major. • Please see the credits as to whom you should e-mail if you have any questions regarding certain sections. • Due to the fact that this is a joint FAQ, please ask us both if you would like to cite certain parts or host it. We won't hunt you down if you plagarize but we most likely won't say no if you just ask :) -------------------------------------------------------------------------- II Background Information Well you might be asking yourself "Why is a fully equipped onion knight better than a regular onion knight?". The answer is simple. An onion knight can only equip a few weapons and items and has horrible stats even when leveled high. Meanwhile, an FEOK has fantastic stats and the equipment rivials that of shruikens and crystal equipment. But of course, the best part of FEOKs is that the equipment is free and the CP to change to an onion knight is EXTREMELY low. FEOKs are most commonly thought to be their own class since they are so much different than regular OKs. The Onion Knight, is as you know, apparently the weakest job there is. Terrible stat growth, terrible HP Gain, hardly any equipment, et cetera. Basically, they suck. However, the Onion Knight has his own set of equipment (naturally called Onion) which can be aquired. Equipping an Onion Knight with an Onion armor, Onion helmet, Onion glove, and Onion Swords and/or Shields makes the Onion Knight into a walking tank. The power of his swords are tremendous, and the defense ridiculously good. And if you want the ULTIMATE warrior, know that once an Onion Knight reaches level 90, for each new level ALL his stats start increasing with around 6+! At level 99 you will have a Fully Equipped Onion Knight with 9999 HP and 99 in all stats! This FAQ will tell you how to get one, and a bit about the equipment itself. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- III Stats "Well what are these fantastic stats?" Here, I will share how much of each stat a FEOK gains on level up. Keep in mind they might not be 100% accurate but I will try and make them as correct as possible. A Level 1 FEOK with 2 Onion Swords has the following stats: HP: 32 MP: 0/0/0/0/0/0/0/0 Strength: 20 Agility: 20 Vitality: 20 Intellect: 5 Spirit: 5 Attack: 4x; 410 Hit Percentage: 99% Defense: 1x; 138 Evade: 99% Magic Defense: 128 Magic Evade: 5% A Level 1 FEOK with 1 Onion Sword and 1 Onion Shield has the following stats: HP: 32 MP: 0/0/0/0/0/0/0/0 Strength: 15 Agility: 15 Vitality: 15 Intellect: 5 Spirit: 5 Attack: 1x; 203 Hit Percentage: 99% Defense: 1x; 183 Evade: 99% Magic Defense: 176 Magic Evade: 5% A Level 1 FEOK with 2 Onion Shields has the following stats: HP: 32 MP: 0/0/0/0/0/0/0/0 Strength: 10 Agility: 10 Vitality: 10 Intellect: 5 Spirit: 5 Attack: 0x; 0 Hit Percentage: 0% Defense: 2x; 229 Evade: 99% Magic Defense: 224 Magic Evade: 5% A Level 99 FEOK with 2 Onion Swords has the following stats: HP: 9999 MP: 0/0/0/0/0/0/0/0 Strength: 99 Agility: 99 Vitality: 99 Intellect: 99 Spirit: 99 Attack: 26x; 452 Hit Percentage: 99% Defense: 6x; 177 Evade: 99% Magic Defense: 128 Magic Evade: 99% A Level 99 FEOK with 1 Onion Sword and 1 Onion Shield has the following stats: HP: 9999 MP: 0/0/0/0/0/0/0/0 Strength: 99 Agility: 99 Vitality: 99 Intellect: 99 Spirit: 99 Attack: 13x; 226 Hit Percentage: 99% Defense: 13x; 225 Evade: 99% Magic Defense: 176 Magic Evade: 99% A Level 99 FEOK with 2 Onion Shields has the following stats: HP: 9999 MP: 0/0/0/0/0/0/0/0 Strength: 99 Agility: 99 Vitality: 99 Intellect: 99 Spirit: 99 Attack: 0x; 0 Hit Percentage: 0% Defense: 20x; 17 Evade: 99% Magic Defense: 224 Magic Evade: 99% While a stat gain somewhat depends on the job skill level of the character, it would be an incredible inconvience to list all the possible stat gains for the various skill levels your FEOK's would be at. So instead, I will list *approximate* gains. This should give you a good idea as to how good an FEOK is and what level would be best for you (if you don't think that you would like to spend the time getting them all up to level 99...) The following stat increases occur on each level up and seems to be dependent on both Skill level and current HP: HP: +~20% The following stat increases and gains occur on every tenth level up. NOTE: Every tenth level up, these stats increase by what follows. At level 90, you will receive stat bonuses after each level up to 99. Strength: +1 Agility: +1 Vitality: +1 Intellect: +1 Spirit: +1 Magic Evade: +1 entire percent The following stats will never increase: MP Hit Percentage Evade Magic Defense Note also that as level increases into the high 80's into level 99, the stat gainings will pick up and at level 93 you will have 9999 HP. If you still wanted entirely maxed stats, get to level 99. The way that Attack and Defense rates rise are still unknown to this gamer. If you have any idea on how Attack and Defense rates gain, please e-mail me or if you have any more information on statistics, also e-mail me at timekeeper2021@fastmail.fm The stats of the actual equipment are as follows: Onion Sword Attack: 200 Hit%: 100% Bonuses: +5 in each Strength, Agility, and Vitality Onion Shield Defense: 48 Evade: 48% Magic Defense: 48 Onion Helmet Defense: 48 Evade: 48% Magic Defense: 48 Other: Also acts as a ribbon (i.e. blocks all status and reduces elemental damage.) Onion Armor Defense: 48 Evade: 48% Magic Defense: 48 Onion Glove Defense: 32 Evade: 32% Magic Defense: 32 Bonuses: +5 in each Strength, Agility, and Vitality -------------------------------------------------------------------------- IV Sylx Tower The only legitimate and honest way of getting all the Onion Equipment is by hunting down dragons in the Sylx Tower. The Sylx Tower is the second to last destination for your party, and consists of 7 floors. The tower is packed with tough enemies such as QumQums. So I recommend going through the Magical Land Eureka first. Using the classic 2 Ninjas and 2 Sages you'll be fine even at levels 45-50. Having one Ninja equipped with the Ragnorok Sword and the Full Moon Boomerang and the other with the Excalibur Sword and Masamune Katana will ensure one hit kills from them (unless they are onback row). Split out magic between the Sages so both have all levels of Cure Magic, and both have spells like Shade, Blind, the Bahamut Summon, the Titan Summon, Break 2, and Death and they will be fine. Using the Sages two cast Shade and Blind to help you out, Cure to heal, and Toad and/or Mini to kill enemies, and the summon magics Bahamut and Titan for really bad situations. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- a. The Dragons There are three Dragons to be found in Sylx: Green Dragon, Red Dragon and Yellow Dragon. All of them can drop all pieces of the Onion Equipment (only one per battle of course) or an Elixir. The Dragons can be found on all floors Level 2 and up. However, I strongly recommend only hunting on Level 4 and up, because there you will not meet enemies like QumQums(the only enemy liable to kill you in Sylx). My favorite Dragon hunting floors are floors 6 and 7. Here are what Dragons appear on what floor: 2 Floor Red Dragon 3 Floor Yellow Dragon 4 Floor Red Dragon 3 Floor(left) Red Dragon 4 Floor(middle) Green Dragon 5 Floor Red Dragon 6 Floor Yellow Dragon 7 Floor Green Dragon The stats of each Dragon are as follows: Green Dragon, Yellow Dragon, and Red Dragon HP: 9999 MP: 0 Drops: Onion Armour, Onion Helmet, Onion Glove, Onion Shield, Onion Sword, Elixir. Steal: Elixir. Attacks: Physical Attack(deals at normal levels between 250 and 600). Exp: 1250 Gil: 5400 Capacity:2 A Dragon is very rare, it's a 4 in 256 battle encounter! This means about 128 battles to meet one, then 68 battles, then 9 battles and then 6 battles. After the fourth one just reset, because the next one is approximately 175 battles away! A Dragon is very easy to beat, simply pummel away with weapons and stun him with Shade and Blind. However, a Dragon will not always drop Onion Equipment when you do this! Having tested out normal attacks for killing a Green Dragon for about 20 minutes once, I can safely say that they only drop Onion Equipment if you kill them a special way. This makes the Onion Equipment ridiculously rare if you are using a Cartridge, but if you are using a ROM(most likely) you can simply savestate straight into the battle. Try killing him normally first. Then using Toad/Mini/Break 2/Death et cetera. All until he drops a piece of Onion Equipment. *NOTE: If each color Dragon will drop equipment to only one type of death, and what death this is, will be the next thing to be updated* Leave for the Invincible if you need to replenish magic and items. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- V Upgrade Trick The upgrade trick, for those that don't know, is a handy little cheat in the game that allows you to change one item into another. While my other guide for FF3j goes much more in-depth, I think it would be fitting to add to this FAQ where you might put the upgrade trick to use to get FEOKs at practically any point in the game. There are two general times to get FEOKs: early-on and anytime else in the game. You can get FEOKs before getting Cid's airship with the upgrade trick but also you can get them at anytime you think you'd want/need them. --Beginning of Game Method to Getting FEOKS-- First of all, you'll need the following items which will run you at most 16880 gil. 4 Leather Helms 4 Lether Armours 4 Copper Bracelets 8 Leather Shields 8 Long Swords 99 Potions Now this may seem like a lot of money to get early on but it is really easy to do so before even getting the airship. Here are some tips to raise cash: 1. Pick up and sell EVERYTHING You can access Altar Cave, Sassoon Castle, and Ur's little house in the left-hand corner. Raid everything and sell everything that isn't anything listed above. This will help you get both money and some of the items. 2. If all you need are some potions, fight the enemies in Altar Cave. Even before upgrading, it's a good idea to get some free potions from the enemies within. 3. Fight the monsters in the Mythril Mine in Kazus for easy gil 4. Buy in bulk In the shops you have the option to buy 1, 4, or 10. Always go for the larger bulk to save some gil. Once you have all the items, arrange them as follows: Legend: (xx) = Other Items (A) = Item to be upgraded (B) = Potions (C) = Must be empty (00) = Empty (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (xx) (xx) (B) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (C) (A) Now head on over to Altar Cave and fight the enemies within. They all drop potions. Once you receive a potion with the items arranged as shown above, the item in slot "A" will be upgraded. Notice that after each battle the items are automatically reset and you'll have to rearrange them after each battle. This can get quite annoying but the state save/load function of most emulators can help you here. **NOTE**: You will need to buy enough items to satisfy the scheme above. Just get 1 Antidote, 1 Eyedrop, and 1 Cloth Armor. **NOTE**: Getting two potions successively in the same battle will cause your first character to have the first letter of their name shifted one (Dave would become Eave) and will cause them to gain a level after each battle thus allowing them to get to level 99 in under 100 battles. The items will upgrade as follows: Leather Helms -> Onion Helms Leather Armours -> Onion Armors Copper Bracelets -> Onion Gauntlets Leather Shields -> Onion Shields Long Swords -> W. Slayer Sword -> Shiny Sword -> Mithril Sword -> Serpent Sword -> IceBlade -> Tyrving Sword -> Salamand Sword -> King Sword -> Tomahawk -> Ancient Sword -> Ashura -> Blood Sword -> Defender Sword -> Triton Hammer -> Kotetsu -> Kiku -> Break -> Excalibur -> Masamune -> Ragnarok -> Onion Sword (Yes that many upgrades to Onion Sword) If you don't think that you'll need to kill everything in one hit from the beginning to the end of the game or you just don't want to have to upgrade 21 times for the swords alone, perhaps you should get the FEOKs at a later date... --Mid-way to the End of the Game Method to getting FEOKs-- Again, you will need the following items which should cost around 176500 gil this time. But then again, at a later point in the game, this amount of gil is cheap enough. 4 Leather Helms 4 Lether Armours 4 Copper Bracelets 8 Leather Shields 8 Triton Hammers (found in Ancient Ruins if you are wondering) 99 Potions If you want to be able to get the level 99 glitch, you can use the method in the above section. If you don't want to cheat *that* much, use this method of upgrade: Legend: (xx)= "other items" Potions included here (00)= blank space (A)= Item to be upgraded (B)= Must be empty (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (xx) (A) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (00) (B) (xx) Fight monsters that drop potions. There are quite a few across the world of FF3j but Altar Cave is still the most reliable. I find this method of upgrade far less frustrating because you only need to move a few items every time. Also, there are no glitches like with the method in the above section. The items will upgrade as follows: Leather Helms -> Onion Helms Leather Armours -> Onion Armors Copper Bracelets -> Onion Gauntlets Leather Shields -> Onion Shields Triton Hammer -> Kotetsu -> Kiku -> Break -> Excalibur -> Masamune -> Ragnarok -> Onion Sword --Additional Notes-- You should note that if you have 99 of any item and receive one more in a battle, the upgrade trick will ensue. It is just standard to choose potions since the enemies that drop them are easy to find and defeat. Refer to my Upgrade trick FAQ for more information if you need it. Note also that the upgrade trick described for midway to the end of the game does _not_ work at the very beginning. I'll never forget it. "FEOK's? F'n Enhanced Onion Kids?" And while I nearly fell out of my chair laughing at this quite humourous guess at an acronymn, I think it stuck with me that more people should know about this phenomenon. Thanks. 2.
