What's New -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Version 1.0 (4/29/09): The first, complete version of this FAQ. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 2. Introduction -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Fantasy Zone is an action/scrolling shooter game for the NES. There was an official version released, and then there was an unauthorized one made by Tengen (it is the same as the official game, though). Anyway, this game is a rather straightforward gaming experience, where you must destroy the major enemies in an area to fight the boss and continue onward. Enemies drop gold, which can be redeemed at the shop that periodically appears to buy upgrades to your ship. The game is relatively short and simple, but it is worth checking out for a quick and fun experience. ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 3. Controls -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Control Pad: Move character, move pointer on menu screens Start: Start game Select: Pause/resume game B: Shoot primary weapon A: Drop bombs ***************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= -= 4. Overview -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ================ General Gameplay ================ Fantasy Zone consists of seven stages (eight if you count the boss rush at the end). In each stage, there will be plenty of regular enemies floating around, but there will also be six larger enemies you must destroy in order to proceed to the boss. On the bottom of the screen, there is a meter with six slots on it. It will highlight where you are on the map in relation to those six target enemies. As you destroy them, the meter will be cleared. Once you kill them all, you will immediately go to the stage's boss. When you kill most regular enemies, they will drop gold bars which fall to the ground below. Collect and accumulate them, as you can spend them in the shop to buy upgrades for your ship. At the start of each stage after the first one, and at other random points, a red bubble with SHOP written on it will appaer. Touch it to enter the shop. You simply move the pointer to the item you want and press A to buy it. You can also move the pointer all the way right to reach a second page of items (or left to move back). After you are done in the shop, you will go to a parts screen where you can select what you want to use now. At certain points, a similar red bubble with SEL will appear; this will allow you to access the parts screen again. Unfortunately you cannot change your current equipment outside of these screens, or access them without those red bubbles appearing. =============== Parts/Equipment =============== Speed Up -------- NOTE: With each of these wing/engine upgrades, your ship will be able to move more quickly. Once you select an upgrade, you keep it forever, or at least until you die, at which point you must buy them all over again. Big Wing Cost: $100 Jet Engine Cost: $1000 Rocket Engine Cost: $100000 Small Wings Cost: N/A Turbo Engine Cost: $10000 Weapon 2 (primary) ------------------ NOTE: With the exception of the Twin Shot, a timer will count down from 30 seconds when you equip these weapons. When the timer reaches zero, you will revert back to your Twin Shot weapon. 5 Way Shot Cost: $5000 (add $4000 to each subsequent purchase) Description: Shoot straight shots in five directions in front of you. Laser Beam Cost: $1000 (add $800 to each subsequent purchase) Description: A strong, straight laser beam which penetrates through most solid objects to attack. Twin Shot Cost: N/A Description: Your default straight-shooting weapon. Wide Beam Cost: $500 (add $400 to each subsequent purchase) Description: This is simply a wider version of your default Twin Shot; it is not any stronger. Walkthrough -= -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ======= Stage 1 ======= You will start off the game here in this simple stage. There are six large red enemies, which are your main targets here. They drop round blue enemies, so move above them when possible. There are groups of four flying enemies at a time that you will also encounter; kill them to earn gold. The silver plane enemies do not yield any gold, though. If you see the red shop icon, touch it to enter the shop and spend some gold if you want. The large red enemies will take a lot of shots from your normal gun, so you may want to upgrade at the shop. You can kill them by dropping four regular bombs, too. Once you kill them, you will meet the first boss. The first stage's boss is a giant block which moves up and down along the right side of the area. It will periodically open its mouth and spit out many smaller rocks to attack. This large cluster can be hard to avoid, so I recommend staying along the left side of the screen and using your primary weapon to attack from a safe distance. The boss usually attacks when it moves towards the top of the area, so be prepared when that happens. Once you destroy the boss, collect the money bags and you will be done here. ======= Stage 2 ======= As soon as the stage begins, you will see the shop icon floating overhead. Now is your chance to upgrade if you wish to do so. There are again six large enemies, this time orange domes, to destroy in order to proceed. Flying around the area are groups of smaller orange and blue enemies (these drop gold), as well as pairs of silver planes (these do not drop gold). The large orange enemies will take more firepower in order to destroy (six regular bombs), so you may want to upgrade your primary weapon at the shop. When you defeat the six enemies, you will meet the boss. Your enemy here is a large orange orb with smaller blue orbs surrounding it. There are two layers of blue orbs: eight larger ones on the outer edge which act as shields, and eight smaller ones inside which are your targets. You need to shoot in between the larger orbs so you can hit the smaller ones, destroying them. All the while, the boss will shoot up projectiles which will rain down on the area, which you can avoid if you are quick enough. Certain weapons, like the Laser Beam, can penetrate the larger orbs, making this even easier. Following the battle, collect the gold, and it's on to the third stage. ======= Stage 3 ======= Upon entering this stage, the shop will appear from above if you want to spend your gold on upgrades (the Laser Beam is recommended, and if you haven't been doing so, upgrade your engine to increase your ship's speed). There are six large orange enemies to defeat here; they can take 8 regular bombs worth of damage. They drop small green snail enemies which move along the ground, periodically jumping in the air to attack. Along the top of the screen are amoeba-like creatures, as well as stray missiles floating around the area (they both drop gold). The silver planes are here as well, but of course they drop nothing. You may also have the shop appear again. The boss of this stage is a giant circular head, with eight cannons mounted on the left side. These small pieces will shoot laser beams to attack as the boss moves up and down, so stay along the upper area of the screen to avoid those attacks. Your targets are the eight small cannon devices. If you have a Heavy Bomb, now is the time to move directly above the cannons and use it to quickly eliminate a majority of them. As you attack the cannons, they will change colors from red to blue to orange, so keep that in mind when attacking. Try not to stay in front of any of them, as the laser attacks are fast! Once you destroy the cannons, the boss will be defeated, so grab your prize money and move on. ======= Stage 4 ======= As usual, enter the shop as soon as you start the level so you can upgrade if needed (you may have enough gold by now to buy the Rocket Engine upgrade). Anyway, there are more enemies around which attack in groups and drop gold (except the round blue enemies found by themselves). Your targets here are the six shelled enemies located on the ground level. They take 9 regular bomb blasts to destroy them, just to get some perspective on their strength. Once you destroy them, you will go ahead to the next boss. This boss will consist of a body and two snake-like tentacles attached to the body. These tentacles will wave up and down while spitting small clusters of projectiles at you. The tentacles are both colored red when you start the battle, but as you attack the many segments of each one, they will change colors from red to blue and yellow, and finally to green. Your objective is to attack the tentacles until all segments on both of them are green. The shots may be difficult to avoid, but luckily you can shoot through the body to hit the tentacles. Once both of them are green, the battle will be over. ======= Stage 5 ======= Just like the previous stages, you will see a shop above you as you arrive. Enter it to upgrade, then you will need to go for the six large enemies yet again. They are in the form of large crystals hanging in the air. They will send out smaller silver planes to attack, so watch these large enemies' undersides. In addition, there are amoeba enemies above which will shoot small projectiles from above, as well as stray missiles and waves of five smaller enemies which will move forward in its formation. The large crystals will take about 10 bomb blasts to kill them. As always, once you destroy the six enemies, it will be time to meet the boss. The boss here is a giant ice penguin, guarded by rows of progressively smaller snowmen. You must destroy all of the smallest enemies in order to start attacking the next row of them. They will all be shooting projectiles to attack, which can make maneuvering and attacking difficult if you are not properly upgraded. Luckily, as you get to the larger enemies, their projectiles become larger and there will be less of them. These enemies all change colors as you damage them, so you can get an idea for how much more you need to beat them down. Once you get to the main boss enemy, it will take quite a beating, so keep on blasting it until it turns black and eventually explodes in defeat! Take the gold-filled bags that fall out and then it will be time to explore the next stage. ======= Stage 6 ======= In this stage, your six large targets consist of orange and white striped domes in the air. They will send out green enemies that will home in on you to attack. You will also have to deal with groups of blue and green enemies flying in formation to attack, as well as round blue enemies with crosshairs on their bodies. All of these creatures drop gold, which means this can be quite profitable, especially since the shop will appear a second time in this stage. The large targets take 12 regular bomb blasts to kill them. As with the previous stages, once you destroy the six main targets, you will go on to the boss area. The boss here consists of a single eyeball which starts by moving to the center of the screen. Before it gets there, get to the center area as well and land on the ground. This is the safest spot to be, since as soon as the eye reaches the center, three barriers will appear and begin to rotate around the center eye. You only need to attack the eye to cause damage; there are no other enemies or projectiles to worry about. You just need to move around the center along with the rotating barriers to avoid certain death. As you attack the eye, it will change colors from blue to various intermediate colors, and ultimately to red. Once you destroy it, collect the money bags and go to the seventh stage! ======= Stage 7 ======= Starting off here, you will once again see the shop appear above your ship. Enter it and get the usual upgrades if need be, then it's time to fight. The six large targets are blue and white, and float near the top of the screen. There will be plenty of green/blue tube enemies floating around, but the biggest nuisance are the small, dull green-colored creatures that shoot projectiles at you (they are hard to see against the background, too). The large enemies take 14 bomb shots to be destroyed. Since pretty much all of the enemies shoot things at you, it will be quite tricky to destroy the larger enemies safely. Be patient and use your upgrades to succeed, and then you will meet another boss. This stage's boss is a giant box which attempts to combine itself around you, trapping/killing you in the process. You will see the parts of the boss expanding before coming together at your most recent location, so you must keep moving to avoid getting trapped (the Turbo/Rocket Engines are essential at this point). When it is combined, the boss is vulnerable to your attacks for a brief moment before it splits up and repeats the same pattern again. The boss will become more brightly colored as you cause damage, and then it will turn white before you are about to kill it. After you defeat the boss, collect the money bags and you will go directly to the shop screen. Buy and equip your upgrades now (I recommend the Laser Beam, as well as some Heavy Bombs), then when you are ready, it's on to the final stage! ======= Stage 8 ======= For this stage, you must fight each of the previous seven bosses again, one after another, with no breaks in between! Once you get through the barrage of the first seven bosses, you will come to THE final boss. The last boss is basically a much larger version of your own ship. It will move offscreen, and the real battle will begin. There will be a small crab enemy which will create a barrier as it moves along the screen, ala the old Snake computer game. If you attack the crab enough, the current pattern will be cleared, and it will start again with a new pattern, while moving a little bit faster. There are five patterns in total to get through, with the fifth one being the toughest since it moves fast and you have a limited amount of time to kill it before you get crushed! Once you manage to kill it, the large ship will emerge and the game will be complete.
