It was one of the few NES titles to feature the Scholar's Cap and green symbol that said that the game was educational. Now, I figured that this game would be pretty cool back then, but now that I've played it myself, I've realized it's just sort of a game with no real value. It's just a cute little novelty game that's sort of rare and it features the pre-SNES Kong Family. Plus it'll help all you struggling kids with your arithmatic skills! *snicker* Well, anyways, I figured I'd just make an FAQ for this game so that anyone who played this game would have little to no trouble understanding it. Enjoy. ^_^ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 1. Updates 12-9-00: I've began work on this game's FAQ, and I've pretty well finished it, except for maybe a few parts that have some loose ends, like the Calculate B mode. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 2. Characters :Donkey Kong Jr.: The infamous spawn of Donkey Kong. Star of Donkey Kong Jr. and well... this game, naturally. He's sort of a smaller version of Donkey Kong with a white muscle shirt on... and don't hold me to this but I'm pretty sure he's in a diaper too. :Donkey Kong Jr. II: This is one of the game's exclusive characters. As a matter of fact, it IS the game's exclusive character! This person is supposed to be the 2 player character, but other that, there's no real info about him/her. It's just a purple version of Donkey Kong Jr.'s sprite. :Donkey Kong: Of course, the big and almighty one had to make his cameo in his son's game somehow... him being the star of the series and all. Donkey Kong doesn't really do a whole lot action wise, but he does move the game along by flipping up the handheld signs with the numbers upon them so you can figure it up and then play, so I guess he does have a use. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3. Basics The game itself seems pretty simple in theory... swing from vine to vine, getting a number, a sign, and another number, and doing that until you come at the number Donkey Kong is holding in the air. Simple huh? Yeah, you'd think so, but think again. This game is TOUGH! ::The Stage:: The game starts off with you on one side, the 2-up on the other. You have four islands between you, each the keeper of one mathematical sign. Above each player will be three vines, each one bearing 3 numbers. Unlike a normal old calculator, though, these 3 numbers are RANDOM! This can kill you when you half to all the way across to the opponent's side just to get the number 4. Also, between the sets of vines are two floating islands. They don't serve much purpose, but that's alright. And finally, above the two floating mid-isles is none other than Donkey Kong, weilding a big transparent sign on which your number is scribbled. ::Gameplay:: The gameplay goes something like this... once you choose your mode, you start off in the normal stage. Donkey Kong heaves his sign off of the ground and upon, the number you must figure up using the numbers on the screen and the math symbols at the bottom. This goes on until either you or your opponent have succeeded in reaching that number, upon which reaching the winning player is rewarded with an apple and game continues on. ::Controls:: There isn't a whole lot to the controls and movement in this game. All that you have to do is press A to jump and press the Directional Pad to navigate DK Jr. left and right and up and down the vines. You can also press select at anytime to escape to the title screen. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 4. Modes In the game, there are actually 3 different ways you can play it, each more challenging and semi-educational than the last. ::Calculate A:: This is the normal mode of playing. You start out at zero on your number total and when Donkey Kong's gigantic billboard is raised, you figure out how to get to that normal by using the numbers and mathmatical symbols lying around the stage. ::Calculate B:: This mode really isn't all that different. The only thing I've noticed different so far is the fact that you start off at a certain number rather than 0 everytime like in Calculate A. Sure, it's a minor difference, but it puts some more difficulty into the game. ::"+-×÷" Exercise:: Unlike the previous two modes, this mode is COMPLETELY different. Rather than being a sort of action game, as it were... this is more of a puzzle mode. When you first enter, you are presented to a screen in which 9 rows are shown to the right of a hanging chain. Here are the 9 selections in order from top to bottom... \/--Vine []¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ <--- Ceiling \/ [][] + [][] {} [][][] - [][][] {} [][][][] + [][][][] {} [][][][] - [][][][] {} [] x [] {} [][][][][][] + [][][][][][] {} [][][][][][] - [][][][][][] {} [][][] x [][] {} [][] ÷ [] __________________________________________ <--- Floor Yeah, I know... really vivid huh? Well that's not the point anyhow. As you can plainly see, there're 9 different types of problem setups you can do, each featuring 10 levels. Playing under this mode is a little difficult to understand at first, however. During gameplay, there are 7 main chains to your right, one chain above you with a [?] box on it, and a row of numbers indicating your current level to the right. Also notice at the top the current problem. Now try to follow me on this. In the center of the screen, on the girders, you can see two different birds flying. The pink one is floating above your level chart, being useless. The big, black other one, though, is helping you. Note in the problem that out of the boxes, a certain one is white. The white one is the current digit you are try to find. You can find that number by going to the chain the big fat bird is floating over and climbing up and down on it. This will change the white box into a number 0-9. Once you fill in all the boxes, drop down off the chain and DK Jr. will either be in shock because you screwed up, or he'll be happy and flex his muscles because you are one smart cookie. Once that is done, this egg thing is dropped by the pink bird to the left and it indicates that you are on level 2. That's about it... And oh yes... one more item. When you first start out on a problem, note the chain above you with the "?" symbol on it. Press it all the way up to the top of the chain to get the problem's solution instantly. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 5. Strategy This game seems simple enough... but hey, it only SEEMS that way. Here're some strategies to help you become a "Donkey Kong Jr. Math"-matician ::Tips:: **When trying to get UP to a number, try multiplying the two largest numbers that have a product under the target number, then add numbers to that product until you have it. **Not really a tip, but more of a suggestion... I found that having prior experience with "addition" and "subtraction" and the other forms of math found in this game will help you in gameplay. Who says math is useless? ::Cheats:: Ok, so maybe math is useless. Oh well. If you're too lazy to figure up some numbers in your head, here're the 3 basic answer charts for x + - (division is too huge...) -Addition- 1+1=2 2+1=3 3+1=4 4+1=5 5+1=6 6+1=7 7+1=8 8+1=9 9+1=10 1+2=3 2+2=4 3+2=5 4+2=6 5+2=7 6+2=8 7+2=9 8+2=10 9+2=11 1+3=4 2+3=5 3+3=6 4+3=7 5+3=8 6+3=9 7+3=10 8+3=11 9+3=12 1+4=5 2+4=6 3+4=7 4+4=8 5+4=9 6+4=10 7+4=11 8+4=12 9+4=13 1+5=6 2+5=7 3+5=8 4+5=9 5+5=10 6+5=11 7+5=12 8+5=13 9+5=14 1+6=7 2+6=8 3+6=9 4+6=10 5+6=11 6+6=12 7+6=13 8+6=14 9+6=15 1+7=8 2+7=9 3+7=10 4+7=11 5+7=12 6+7=13 7+7=14 8+7=15 9+7=16 1+8=9 2+8=10 3+8=11 4+8=12 5+8=13 6+8=14 7+8=15 8+8=16 9+8=17 1+9=10 2+9=11 3+9=12 4+9=13 5+9=14 6+9=15 7+9=16 8+9=17 9+9=18 -Subtraction- 1-1=0 2-1=1 3-1=2 4-1=3 5-1=4 6-1=5 7-1=6 8-1=7 9-1=8 1-2=-1 2-2=0 3-2=1 4-2=2 5-2=3 6-2=4 7-2=5 8-2=6 9-2=7 1-3=-2 2-3=-1 3-3=0 4-3=1 5-3=2 6-3=3 7-3=4 8-3=5 9-3=6 1-4=-3 2-4=-2 3-4=-1 4-4=0 5-4=1 6-4=2 7-4=3 8-4=4 9-4=5 1-5=-4 2-5=-3 3-5=-2 4-5=-1 5-5=0 6-5=1 7-5=2 8-5=3 9-5=4 1-6=-5 2-6=-4 3-6=-3 4-6=-2 5-6=-1 6-6=0 7-6=1 8-6=2 9-6=3 1-7=-6 2-7=-5 3-7=-4 4-7=-3 5-7=-2 6-7=-1 7-7=0 8-7=1 9-7=2 1-8=-7 2-8=-6 3-8=-5 4-8=-4 5-8=-3 6-8=-2 7-8=-1 8-8=0 9-8=1 1-9=-8 2-9=-7 3-9=-6 4-9=-5 5-9=-4 6-9=-3 7-9=-2 8-9=-1 9-9=0 -Multiplication- 1×1=1 2×1=2 3×1=3 4×1=4 5×1=5 6×1=6 7×1=7 8×1=8 9×1=9 1×2=2 2×2=4 3×2=6 4×2=8 5×2=10 6×2=12 7×2=14 8×2=16 9×2=18 1×3=3 2×3=6 3×3=9 4×3=12 5×3=15 6×3=18 7×3=21 8×3=24 9×3=27 1×4=4 2×4=8 3×4=12 4×4=16 5×4=20 6×4=24 7×4=28 8×4=32 9×4=36 1×5=5 2×5=10 3×5=15 4×5=20 5×5=25 6×5=30 7×5=35 8×5=40 9×5=45 1×6=6 2×6=12 3×6=18 4×6=24 5×6=30 6×6=36 7×6=42 8×6=48 9×6=54 1×7=7 2×7=14 3×7=21 4×7=28 5×7=35 6×7=42 7×7=49 8×7=56 9×7=63 1×8=8 2×8=16 3×8=24 4×8=32 5×8=40 6×8=48 7×8=56 8×8=64 9×8=72 1×9=9 2×9=18 3×9=27 4×9=36 5×9=45 6×9=54 7×9=63 8×9=72 9×9=81 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 6. Credits I'd like to thank the following... fei_603 - For reminding me of this long lost classic. GameFAQs - For hosting this FAQ. Nintendo - For creating a game that warped childrens' minds of math with apes. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 7. Legal Info I really don't want this used anywhere but GameFAQs. I don't think that'll be a problem, however. Who'd want this pathetic game's FAQ on their page? Oh yes, NES, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., GameFAQs, mathematics, and whatever else I mentioned that is owned by someone else, I DO NOT CLAIM OWNERSHIP THEREOF. Secef © 2000-2001
