***************************************************************************** DONKEY KONG JR. MATH ***************************************************************************** Format: Nintendo Entertainment System Developer: Nintendo Publisher: Nintendo Release Date: December 12, 1983 Guide Author: Michael Rhodes Email: knoll360@gmail.com ============================================================================= Introduction ============================================================================= “Donkey Kong” was originally released into the Arcades in 1981 and was an immediate success. Its sequel, “Donkey Kong Jr.”, came out the next year and continued that success but while letting the player control Donkey Kong’s son. When Nintendo released their Famicom video game console in Japan in 1983 these both ended up becoming launch titles (along with “Popeye”). The success of the new Famicom as well as the Donkey Kong series caused Nintendo to create one of their first edutainment titles: “Donkey Kong Jr.”. In addition, this title ended up being one of the launch titles for the Famicom’s United States equivalent (the Nintendo Entertainment System or NES for short). Unfortunately for Nintendo “Donkey Kong Jr. Math” failed to bring sales and was poorly received by critics as well as gamers alike. This caused Nintendo to avoid education based video games for quite some time. Since the release of this game the Donkey Kong series has taken off even more with the release of “Donkey Kong Country” (1994, SNES) as well as Donkey Kong’s foray into 3D later on. To this day Donkey Kong is one of Nintendo’s biggest series along with Mario, Zelda, and Metroid even if this particular game seems to have been ignored. Now my name is Michael Rhodes and I have been writing guides since 2006. I enjoy video games of all ages and would like to write as many guides as possible to help out gamers everywhere. Before playing this game make sure that you at least know basic math skills as well as the ability to do long division. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Points ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Search Tab: [1.2] The +-X% Exercise mode presents the player with points merely as a way to judge how successful you are being. 1000 points is the maximum that can be earned in any one game. The faster that you complete a problem the more points that you will earn (for a maximum of 100 points per problem). Failing to complete the problem in time or getting the game to answer it for you will present you with no points for that particular problem. ============================================================================= Characters ============================================================================= Search Tab: [2.0] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Playable Character ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Search Tab: [2.1] Donkey Kong Jr. After rescuing his father in “Donkey Kong Jr.” he now must try his best to learn how to do math! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Other Character ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Search Tab: [2.2] Donkey Kong Donkey Kong Jr.’s father who is attempting to help him learn math. ============================================================================= Walkthrough ============================================================================= Search Tab: [3.0] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Calculate A ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Search Tab: [3.1] Both Calculate A and Calculate B are two-player only modes while +-X% Exercise is a one-player only mode. Basically Donkey Kong will provide a number at the top of the screen. Both players start at zero and must get to this number. Basically if you are close to the number than grab either the addition sign (if you need to go up) or the subtraction sign (if you need to go down) then collect the number you need from one of the vines and repeat. Keep in mind that you can jump across the small platforms at the bottom of the screen although it is difficult. However, if you are far away from the desired number than use the division sign to get to a multiple close to the desired number. For example, if you need to get to 556 then divide your current number to get close to say 50. Once at a good number multiply it by what it is necessary to get as close to the desired number as possible, then add or subtract from there. Do this as quickly and efficiently as possible until you get to the desired number. You get a point for every time you beat the other player to this goal. The first one to five points wins. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Calculate B ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Search Tab: [3.2] This mode is identical to Calculate A except that you do not start at zero, the desired number may be negative, and the numbers are typically much higher. Just use the same strategies as presented in Calculate A to do well in this mode. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +-X% Exercise ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Search Tab: [3.3] This mode is entirely different from the previous two. Start by jumping onto the rope on the left side of the screen then climb up and point to the desired types of math problems that you would like to solve. Now with addition and subtraction problems get the question firmly planted in your head then pause the game and either solve the problem in your head, on paper, or with a calculator. Now climb up and down the ropes on the right side of the screen directly below the column for each number and go up and down to shift the number itself. Once you finish putting in the number you will either be marked as right or wrong. If you are unsure as to how a problem works climb up the rope on the far left and it will present you with the correct answer which should hopefully give you an idea (although this won’t present you with any points). When it comes to multiplication and division problems you are forced to do them the long way by inserting numbers for each step of the way. This shouldn’t be too difficult so long as you can do long division and whatnot. Just keep in mind that in one of the columns the last digit is always a zero but is just shown as a blank space. Once you solve ten problems in any category your score will be added up and the game will end. The less time you take to solve each problem the more points that you will be rewarded with. ============================================================================= Thank You ============================================================================= Search Tab: [4.0] Dylan Hodge For helping me play through Calculate A and Calculate B modes as they require a second player.
