Duck Tales Speed Guide Version: 1.0 By: Aiden Dunne (DarkAbyss) =============================================================================== Version History: September 25, 2004 - Submitted this Speed Guide to GameFAQs with the hopes of it being accepted. =============================================================================== Table of Contents: I. Introduction II. The Amazon III. Transylvania IV. African Mines V. The Himilayas VI. The Moon VII. Return to Transylvania VIII. Final Words, Credits, and Additional Information IX. Legal Stuff =============================================================================== I. Introduction This is a guide that will help you complete Duck Tales for NES in the fastest way possible. This is for people who have finished the game before and find it relatively easy, but here are some general tips... 1) Dont pogo jump when you dont have to. It some spots it is faster if you walk and most times pogo jumping could cause you to get hit easier, so stay off the pogo unless needed! 2) Dont worry about getting hit by enemies. It may look sloppy but as long as it's fast and you don't die, it works, right? 3) Avoid wasting time in the menus. When you turn on the game, instantly pick a difficulty and a level. You should always be ready to pick the level, especially in the transition to Mines, to Transylvania (for the key) and back to the mines. 4) Avoid wasing time after you kill a boss. As soon as that boss is defeated be ready to get the chest. 5) Avoid wasting time when you are scrolling through text that you have to go through. Just jam the buttons to avoid wasting precious seconds. 6) Dont be afraid to try new things and experiment. Who knows, you could find a better way to do this run or find a better way to complete a part you were having difficulty with. Either way.. 7) Have fun. =============================================================================== II. The Amazon This is the hardest level in the game, hands down, so you need to be especially careful. When you start the level you have to make your way to the right. Jump to the right, right from the start and jump on a gorrilla, and keep going. When you come to split between an upper platform and a path to go under, always take the top. Make your way across the level by jumping on snakes and bees. Eventually you will get to a Vine that leads both up and down. When you reach it, go up. When you hit the next screen hold up the entire time to avoid a hit from the bee. When you get to the top, just walk left right away so the bee flies over you. Then you make your way left across small platorms. Just jump normally and/or jump off bees to get to the left side of the level. This is where you take the vine up. As soon as you get to the next screen go directly left. When you jump over the small block to the right of the vine, a boulder suddenly drops and speeds after you. You must then walk away from it untill you get to the spikey vines on the ground and then you pogo across them. You then get to a square stone duck head which looks like the top of a totem poll. After you pogo on the spikes, just keep holding over and you should pogo onto it. This will make a treasure chest appear up and slightly left of this totem poll. Pogo on the chest and jump up the opening in the ceiling, holing up to grab onto the vine which is up there. You must then climb up this vine, move across the top and jump down the vine on the right, which will take you straight to the boss. Convienient, eh? Boss - Bouncing Statue This boss is very straight foward. All you have to do is jump in it's head 5 times (Like most bosses). When you jump on it's head you should try to time your next pogo attack exactly 3 seconds appart, when he stops blinking. All you have to do is time your jumps and watch out for when he jumps high and disrups your bouncing. =============================================================================== III. Transylvania When you start the level you must head right. Keep walking and jumping normally through the level. Be sure to jump over Daisy Duck who is pointless in a speed run. At the right side of the staires, after the block on the ground try to pogo jump onto the Rope and climb up. Head right directly after the rope. You walk across and run into the Mummy's ball, which you must hit with your pogo before continuing on. You must then jump up to the top path and if you are quick enough you can jump on the mummy's ball and the mummy's head without a hit. After that you jump and climb up the Rope to the top floor of this mansion, where you jump on the mummy's head to the right and walk through the secret passage on the right wall. You then proceed to jump into the second portal mirror. Just speed your way left, and at the end of this passage a ghost will pop down, but down worry it's almost unavoidable in a speed run. (Sometimes if you stick to the ground instead of jumping a lot, the ghost doesn't appear). Walk into the boss' room. Boss - The Witch (Magica) This boss is annoying, but she's easy if you go about fighting her the right way. All you have to do is to wait until she lands and jump over her, and onto her back, avoiding the lightning which goes up, diagonal and straight from her. If you jump around her right you shouldn't get hit. It will greatly help your speed run (if you choose to do them) if Magica decides to fly low enough for you to jump on her normally, without landing. Either way just jump on her enough to kill her and collect your treasure. =============================================================================== IV. African Mines Just pogo jump down the staires to the right and run into one of the duck twin that is standing in front of the locked door. You have to go back to Transylvania to get the key. In Transylvania, just walk to the right for one screen. You will see and top platform with a portal mirror on it. Pogo jump up there and walk into the mirror. Just jump up and pogo jump onto the oversized chest. Get the key and walk into the left portal mirror. You are returned to the level select screen, where you go back into the mines. Just make your way right when you get back into the mines. Eventually you will get to a Chain rope which you then jump down, but make sure you are holding right. Once you drop to the right side of the chain, go right and you are met by a large pit. Jump and pogo on the enemies which jump out of no where. It's a pattern and very easy to get the hang off. After you jump at the last enemy, make one jump on the small platform and jump to the large platform with the oversized chest on it. Just skip the chest and jump down the whole with the chain leading down. When you land, just head left untill you reach the boss. Be sure to avoid the Bat at the beginning of the tunnel and the other monsters on the ground. Boss - Rolling Mine Man Before you walk into the bosses little hallow, you should pogo jump so you will be jumping as you enter, so you can spring foward and try to get an early hit on him. If not, just wait in the middle. When he passes overheard, time a pogo jump so it will come down and hit him just after he comes out of a ball. After you hit him, get ready to jump. The way the boss goes is random, but jump to be on the safe side. Just get your timed pogo jumps in and you should be fine. =============================================================================== V. The Himalayas Just move right on the linear path. Eventually you will get to jumping goats which are extremely hard to dodge. Try to jump on them before getting hit and drop down the first opening in the ground. You will fall three screens, before you reach the last one, hold left, so you will land on the left tunnel. Make your way left, without jumping, until you get to the spider. As soon as you get to the spider he will drop and return to it's original position, after that happens jump over the pit and pogo over the stack of boxes and continue. The only thing you have to worry about is one hockey player a few screens over. Eventually you will get to a black that is on the edge of a large pit. Jump onto the top platform and climp up the rope. When you climb the rope, in the next screen, a boulder will drop down. There is two ways to get around this, one being a bit quicker. You could do it the normal way and jump to the left to avoid it. Or you can take the hit and just hold up, climbing the rope to the top. When you reach the top, just jump over the blocks of ice and jump on the platform. Just jump across the ice blocks untill you reach the last one, you should jump from the last one and into the small door way of snow. Boss - Yeti This boss will immediately jump to the middle of the screen. You then pogo on his head. He will then jump to the left of the screen, where you do the same. He will shake showballs down from the ceiling, dodge them. He will then jump back to the middle, where you have to pogo on his head quickly, before he jumps back to the right side. (See a pattern?) Just jump in his head, and avoid one more batch of snow balls, then jump on his head one last time when he jumps to the middle. =============================================================================== VI. The Moon Right off the start, land in a pogo and jump over the two enemies. You then must proceed left, making sure to jump over/on all the enemies that will come your way. You will then reach an opening in the UFO with a metal chain leading up. You must jump and hold up and climb up the chain. You should then, when you reach the end of the chain, jump off it (to the right) and pogo up to the other chain which leads to the next floor. When you reach this floor, instantly go left, jump on the space man (holding the pogo button afterwards fully) and jump onto the ledge. If you dont do this a enemy will you slow you down for several seconds. Just pogo to the next ledge and to the metal chain, which you should pogo off a block and climb up it. This next part is annoying. You should jump off the chain and pogo off a block, or the ground and jump on the enemy's head, to your left. After doing that keep pogo jumping left until you reach a treasure chest. Here's the tricky part, to avoid the enemy reappearing, you must just barely pogo the chest to recieve the Key (Try not to go to far left, if so the emeny will reappear). Head back down the pit with the chain on it. You should be able to go right over to two ledges with no problem, and jump back down the first pit wtih the chain. (Right here you will be on the platform with a monster running back and forth under you to the left.) You should now make your way right over the ledge and avoiding the monsters between them. Eventually after a few pillars, you will get to another chain which leads up. Avoid the enemy under it and climb up it. You will reach a another floor with a ledge above you. Jump off the chain and pogo to the upper ledge, and climb up the other chain. On this floor you just walk left and through the door. Just jump on the right enemy and get the Remote Control. Head back and out of the UFO (Go down, down, then left) When you reach the chain that leads down again, climb down it instead of jumping down the pit. When you reach the bottom of the chain, jump right to the ground. Jump over the small pit and pogo jump over the few blocks that's there and approach the large pit. You should now time your pogo jump to land on the platorm and pogo again to get over the monster. You should then jump to the high ledge, to the lower one, between the enemies and approach the wall to the right. Gizmo will then blow it up, and you then should jump down it. Pogo left, and dodge the enemies untill you get to the door to the boss' lair. Boss - Lunar Rat This boss is annoying just because he's quick and he jumps high randomly. All of you have to do is wait for him to land/stop in the middle of the room and pogo on his head. Make sure you time it right though, this boss can be annoying due to it's speed. =============================================================================== VII. Return to Transylvania (Copied exactly from the Transylvania section. It's the same way to the boss) When you start the level you must head right. Boss - Dracula Duck This is a tricky boss at first, but when you get the hang of it, it's a breeze. You wait until he appears and sends out a bat. As soon as the bat goes to the ground and comes back up to the same level as his feet. Jump up and pogo off the bat and onto Dracula's head. Some times you will miss him because he fades away to fast, but with some practise you will get this boss in no time. After the boss you have to climb a rope to the treasure. Just climb up the robe and get your prize. =============================================================================== VIII. Final Words, Credits, and Additional Information When doing speed runs for this game, most of the time the bosses take longer than normal. If so, just reset, it's not worth wasting your time by getting a bad random movement. (For example, if the Witch in Transylvania flys low off the start, you can get two and maybe three easy hits off her before she lands) One thing you must remember, and sometimes I forget and get frustrated. You must stay calm, this is a fairly hard game especially to be doing a speed run for. Just keep practicing and you should be flying through the game in no time. Credits William "Games Bill" Reynolds - This man has pretty much been the source of most of my games and game knowledge.
