Feedback ############################################################################### # Introduction # ############################################################################### Greetings, fellow gamers! You have just started reading my complete FAQ of Deadly Towers for NES, widely known as one of the most difficult video games of all time. Anyone who has played it knows why. Come on, admit it...how long did you last the first time you played this game? 2 minutes? 30 seconds? That's all the proof I needed to see that this one would be quite a challenge. Most of you that have played this game probably also think that this is one of the WORST games of all time as well. There are certainly many reasons to support this. I won't go into them here, but let's just say that this game is hard, but for all the wrong reasons. However, once you know how to counteract the flaws in this game, it is quite possible to win, especially with the password system. Add the information you're about to read in this FAQ, and you'll find that this game can actually be fun (though that might be a stretch, since this is still an old game). Enjoy! ############################################################################### # Story/Game Objective # ############################################################################### The game actually tells a great story. It would be wrong of me to just spit it back out here when you can read it during the game (and set to some pretty good music too). Just turn the game on and do nothing to read the full version. Just to summarize the game's goal, you are Prince Myer, heir to the throne of Willner. The evil wizard Rubas plans on invading your kingdom. To do this, he plans to summon an army of monsters using the musical tones of 7 magic bells, that sit at the tops of 7 towers. To stop him, you must climb each of these towers, recover the bells, and burn them. Once all of the bells are burned, the wizard will be vulnerable to an attack of your own. ############################################################################### # Controls # ############################################################################### Below is a list of what each button on your controller does in this game: up/down/left/right: Move around, moves item arrow on subscreen Select: Open and close the subscreen Start: Start the game B: Selects items to remove from subscreen WITHOUT using them A: Shoot sword, use items from subscreen ############################################################################### # General Tips # ############################################################################### Before we start the walkthrough, let's go over a few things that you'll want to keep in mind as you play the game. Namely, how to get past the major flaws in the gameplay: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Our Hero ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For those who haven't played this game, this is the number one problem with this game: Prince Myer starts out as a complete wimp. He can't take more than a couple of hits without dying, he moves slowly, he can't throw his sword much faster than he can walk, only one slow sword can be on the screen at a time, and when it hits something, it hardly does any damage. * AVOIDING ENEMIES * Because of Myer's "lower than low" defensive powers, you have to play smart at all times. Don't take ANY unnecessary risks! At least until you get some decent defensive items, you should go through each screen VERY slowly. There are two types of enemies: those that wait for you to bring them onto the screen and others that can zoom in from the sides of the screen at any moment. The fast ones usually move in a (somewhat) straight line. If you you're moving slow enough, you should be able to see them coming in time to dodge or shoot them. * ATTACKING ENEMIES - DON'T MISS! * Most fights early on will feel make you feel like you're fighting an army of tanks using a squirt gun, since EACH enemy will take at least 5 hits to kill. However, there's a way to make these battles less painful...Move in close! Getting close to an enemy makes it easier to avoid missing with your sword shots. If you score a hit, your sword will disappear from the screen and you won't have to wait to throw another one! Plus, when an enemy is hit, it can't move for a short time (about a second), meaning that if you're close to it when you nailed it, you should be able to finish it off with rapid-fire shots. * DIRECTIONAL ATTACKS * Remember that you can shoot your sword in 8 directions (including diagonally). Many enemies can only shoot their fireballs in 4 directions, so this can give you an advantage. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Secrets ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sometimes, when walking around the Overworld or inside the Towers, you may happen to step on a special spot on the ground and be teleported to a secret area. This is NOT a glitch! You've just stumbled upon the entrance to a place when you can get some items! Unfortunately, most secret places are either extremely large or full of the most deadly enemies in the game. Entering these places can mean certain death, if Prince Myer isn't properly armed. Because of this, it is my recommendation that you take note in the Maps/Secrets section of all of these hidden locations, both so that you know how to avoid them and also so you can get through them when you're strong enough to enter. There are 3 types of secret areas: * DUNGEONS * The most common secret areas are dungeons. Dungeons can be extremely nasty places, if you don't know what you're supposed to do when you find one. Most of them contain about 200-250 small, non-descript rooms, which makes it easy to get lost (assuming you can even last long enough). Worst of all, if you stumble upon the entrance to one of these things, you can't just walk right back out of it...you have to SEARCH for the room with the exit! Some of these rooms have a magical circle on the floor. This symbol may be the exit, but it can also be the entrance to a shop. These shops are what makes it important to know your way around at least one dungeon in the game (there are ten, but most aren't worth the effort of figuring out). Despite all of the dangers, you will not be able to collect any decent equipment early in the game without them. * PARALLEL ZONES * Parallel zones are much smaller than dungeons, since they're only as big as the screen that you entered it from. However, they still have a large supply of difficult enemies. When you find yourself in one of these, you should have two goals in mind: First, get the treasure that is lying around somewhere. Whatever it is, it's usually one of the better items in the game, so it's well worth the effort. Second, find the exit. There is another invisible exit spot to find. * SECRET ROOMS * The simplest of hidden areas, these places are just the size of one screen. Each one has a different special item (again, usually one of the best in the whole game) lying in the middle, waiting to be taken. However, there is always a swarm of the game's deadliest enemies inside. Once you have enough defensive items though, it's nothing you can't handle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Walls, Doors, and Taking Damage ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you're standing against a wall, there is a bug in the game that doesn't allow you to move sideways (as if you're stuck in a little "rut" in the wall). To move, you have to move straight away from the wall first before turning to the sides. * NARROW LEDGES AND GETTING PINNED * Pinning can happen at either the bottom of a ledge or on narrow ledges. If an enemy hits you and continues to touch you, you will continue to get hit by that enemy (EVEN if you can fight back) until you can pull away or one of you dies (probably you). Avoid fighting in these narrow places unless you have to. * LADDERS * When climbing a ladder, you can still shoot your sword, but only in 6 directions. You can't shoot straight up or straight down. Like with narrow ledges, it's easy to get pinned when fighting on these, so I wouldn't do it. * TAKING HITS AND MOVEMENT * When you get hit (assuming you're not already dead), the prince will be knocked backwards from whatever direction he was walking in. This works as expected, as long as you were IN MOTION when you got hit. If you were standing still, you ALWAYS GO DOWN, when hit. If this is not what you want, try to move when you know you're about to be hit. This is important to remember for several reasons: First, some of the ledges in the Overworld are jagged, meaning that there is a cliff there that you can fall off of and die. If an enemy hits you while you're standing still above one of these, you can kiss your game goodbye. Second, even if there isn't a cliff to worry about, there can still be something else like a doorway. Going through doors resets all of the enemies in the room you just left, which can be very painful in some cases. Finally, if you get knocked into a wall by an enemy, you're likely to get pinned, which will probably kill you. * DOORS * As a side note to the bit about taking hits and getting knocked around, another bad thing can happen with this around doorways. You'll sometimes walk through a door to find an enemy waiting to hit you immediately from the other side. This usually knocks you back through the door you came in, which is really annoying. To counteract this, it's important to note that you can walk through doorways at different heights on the screen. You don't always have to walk straight through either...try walking at an angle. This should help you get to that nasty enemy that's blocking your path. ############################################################################### # Walkthrough # ############################################################################### Now that we've covered the basics, it's time to dive into the game. What follows is a complete step-by-step approach to completing the "impossible" game of Deadly Towers! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Collecting Circle Hearts ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Items: 3 Circle Hearts Our first goal will be to collect a few Circle Hearts to raise our maximum hit points. Start the game and proceed to the right, entering the first door you see. In the next area, quickly go up through the door at the top of the screen (dodge the enemies instead of fighting). Now go left and enter the first door you find here. A Circle Heart is waiting for you at the top of the screen. Grab it, then go back through the door where you came in. If you're following the Overworld map (see Maps/Secrets section), we're back on Screen #2. Going left, a group of small, rising flames are in your way. It may look like an endless stream, but in reality, there are only about 5 enemies that loop around the screen when they reach the top. If you kill one, the stream gets thinner. Use your close-up attack to get rid of these things, one at a time. When you reach the left end of this screen, you'll see two paths, up and down. Go down first and grab the Circle Heart there. Quickly go back up through the door, then take the upper path from the previous intersection. You should end up in a small area with a door above you that is guarded by a dragon. Shoot at it and get in close when it's stunned. It takes about 20 hits to kill. Collect the items it leaves behind, then move on through the door. We're now on Screen #4, a gray area. To the right is another stream of flames. Take them out, as before, then take the Circle Heart on the other side of them. You should now have a maximum HP of 130. Go back to the left and walk around the upper left corner of the screen and you'll find the entrance to a dungeon that I have labelled as "#4" on the map. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Buying Equipment ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Items: Hyper Boots, Shield, Chain Helmet Those of you who have played this game and have ever gotten trapped in one of these dungeons must be thinking I'm crazy for leading you here. Don't worry, you'll make it out of here in one piece, no sweat! It's important to visit a few dungeons early in the game to get some decent equipment from the shops. You first appear in a room with 4 bouncing balls in the corners. Ignore them and go up through the door. Here, a tower of balls will begin to rise. It can't move, so all you have to do is shoot it (takes a ton of hits though). Notice that it gave you a lot of power-ups for killing it? This tower is the best enemy in the game for raising energy and collecting Ludder. It's easy to kill and doesn't really fight back (though if it rises all the way, a ball will start rotating around it). However, this kill can be made even easier, as you'll see. Leave the room by going up. You'll find another tower here. This time, instead of fighting, just walk to the right and out the door. Once you appear in the next room (contains 4 bats), turn around and go back the way you came. What happened to the tower? It's just one ball! If you keep your distance, it won't rise. Plus, while it's small like this, it only takes 4 hits to kill! However, you still killed about 8 enemies at once! Collect the items they left behind. Check your subscreen. Chances are, you got a LOT more stuff than you expected! Keep walking in and out of this tower room until you collect at least 232 Ludder (250 is the maximum, so don't bother with more). Once you do, go to the right again into the bat room, then down from there. Step into the circle in the middle of this room to find your first shop. Here you can buy the Hyper Boots for your 232 Ludder (be sure to equip them on the subscreen). Now you can walk a lot faster, as long as you move diagonally (the boots don't seem to help with the other directions). NOTE: You can also buy Orange Scrolls here. If you like, you can raise another 100 Ludder and buy one. It will help speed things up later. Climb the ladder to leave the shop. Quickly go up to leave the room to escape the dangerous caterpillars, then go left to the tower room again. Time to raise some more money. Collect at least 180 Ludder, then go left two rooms, down, and left again. You might have trouble entering this room full of snakes. Be sure to try walking through the door at different heights and angles to get through. Once you enter the snake room, go through the left door to find another tower. If you lost any hit points, you can use the left door to pace in and out of here to recharge. From the tower, go left and enter the circle to find another shop. Buy and equip the Shield for 100 Ludder. Leaving the shop, go right to the tower room, then down 4 times to find yet another shop. Get the Chain Helmet here for 80 Ludder, leave, then go down one more time. Enter the circle in this room to exit the dungeon! That wasn't so bad, was it? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Back in the Overworld ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Items: Circle Heart When you leave the dungeon, you'll appear in the middle of Screen #5 on the Overworld map. There should be a path below you that would take you to the screen with the dungeon you just came out of. Instead of going that way, go left and through the door at the end. The next screen has a Circle Heart. Take it, but don't walk too high, unless you want to enter Dungeon #6. Move to the right and through the door. On the next screen, go right again and follow the path leading down. We're now on the right side of Screen #6. Go right again, killing enemies if you like...just DON'T kill the demon that's trapped in the cage. Doing so will cost you all of your Ludder! Go up through the door to find a small area with some kind of phantom guarding the next door. There's a hidden shop in the middle-right part of this room, but you don't really need to go there. Kill the phantom, just like you did with the dragon earlier, then move on. Follow the gray path to the left, past the stream of flames. Once the narrow path widens, walk to the upper right of the larger area to find another dungeon (#7 on the map). NOTE: If you bought an Orange Scroll in the previous dungeon, you could have used it to warp to the screen with the Holy Flame, which is a nice short cut. From there, you can just go down and then straight right to find the this same dungeon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Another Shopping Trip ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Items: Orange Scrolls (optional), Leather Armor, Gloves, Red Drinks Welcome to Dungeon #7. The starting room should have a bouncing ball in the middle of it. Take the exit to the right. This room has a circle that leads to a shop that contains Item Set "E" (check the Shops section). There's not much to buy right now, but there will be some great stuff later in the game, so make a note of it! The next move is tricky, if you don't see it coming. There's a tower in the room beyond the bottom exit to this shop room. If you go through the middle of the door, it's going to hit you and pack a serious punch! Use one of the edges of the door to avoid the tower as it rises, then quickly move to the side before the spinning ball appears. Now that you're in a safer position, you can proceed to walk in and out of this room to raise some money (at least 200 to start). From the tower, go right twice and then up. The circle in this room leads to the same kind of shop you saw when you bought the Hyper Boots. If you like, you can buy Orange Scrolls here. They will come in extremely handy after you complete a tower. You'll be able to warp straight to the Holy Flame instead of having to climb all the way back down the tower! If you're confident that you can survive long enough to complete more than one tower in a single game, go ahead and buy more scrolls. Otherwise, one is all you need. Moving on from the Orange Scroll shop (Item Set "G"), go right, down, and then right twice. This screen with 4 flames on it is the Exit room, but we're not done shopping yet. WARNING: DO NOT GO DOWN FROM THIS ROOM! The Snake-Men in the room there will kill you before you can say "What Happened?!" From the Exit room, go right and up. You've now reached a really nice area with 3 shops within a space of 4 rooms. This is the only place I know of in the whole game that's this good! This first room contains a shop with Item Set "B". You can buy Red Drinks (each one restores 50 HP) at a decent price here, but that's about it for now. Go right one room to find the 2nd shop of this area (Item Set "H"). For 100 Ludder, you'll want to buy the Leather Armor here. Go right twice more. The 3rd shop is here and contains the Gloves (Item Set "C"), which will let you throw swords twice as fast! It also costs 100 Ludder. This place also sells Red Drinks for the same good price as the 1st shop of this area. With all of this stuff to buy, you probably won't have enough money to buy everything you want without finding a ball tower to refill your wallet. That's the other beauty of this area...there's one really close by! From the shop with the Gloves, just go left one room and then down (USING THE EDGE OF THE DOOR) to find another money-producing tower. When you're done shopping, backtrack from this area to the Exit room and leave the dungeon (from the shop with the Gloves, go left 3 rooms, down, and left again). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Getting the Hyper Armor ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Items: 2 Circle Hearts, Hyper Armor Leaving the dungeon puts you on the Overworld screen with the Holy Flame, which is the place where you will be burning the evil bells, as you recover them. Finally, the game can truly begin! Each of the 7 bell towers can be accessed from this screen. On the map, I have numbered the towers from the flame, going left (the screen loops around forever, so if you go left or right long enough, you'll end up back at the flame). NOTE: We will NOT be doing these towers in the order they are numbered! The main goal right now is to get the game's best hidden items as soon as possible. This requires climbing the towers in a certain order. Go left from the flame and go through third door you come to, which is what I have labeled as Tower #3. These tower areas are very simple. Just climb slowly and take out the enemies as they appear. There's a Secret Room on the 7th floor of this area (counting the bottom level as the 1st floor). Unless you want to die a short death, DO NOT GO IN THERE! Don't worry, we'll be back here later to get the important item inside. Go through the door at the top of the stairs to reach the inner part of the tower. Now instead of stairs, we have ladders. Not a problem. Keep climbing until you reach the 6th floor. Here, walk into the upper left part of the ledge to find the hidden entrance to a Parallel Zone. Now comes the tough part. Some really fast ghosts will immediately come after you. In order to survive, you're going to have to hide in the lower corner of your ledge. The ghosts don't seem to fly there as often. From here, face right and try to hit them with your sword. As soon as you hit one, start pounding on the sword button to finish it off, then start shooting at the others. Don't try to move until they're all dead! Unless you brought a boatload of Red Drinks, you cannot afford to get hit by these guys! Once the ghosts are gone, start working your way down. If more ghosts appear while you're on a ladder, QUICKLY go back up and hide in one of the lower corners again. Eventually, you'll reach a ledge with the Hyper Armor, one of the game's 3 best defensive items! Equipping it will help quite a bit, but you're going to need more protection before the game gets that much easier. From the ledge with the Hyper Armor, go down one more level. Walk around the upper part of the space between the ladders to find the exit that leads back to the "real" world. Now you need to make your way back to the Holy Flame screen. If you have an Orange Scroll, use it now for a free ride! Otherwise, climb back down the tower. In case you're wondering, beating the boss at the top of the tower right now would be a bad idea, since we would then be unable to come back here for the Secret Room we skipped before (which contains the awesome Blue Necklace). Why? Because defeating a boss causes a tower to disappear when you leave, meaning that you wouldn't be able to come back later and get any items that you missed! Any time you're back at the Holy Flame is usually a good time to stock up on items. You can go back to Dungeon #7 and get some more Red Drinks and maybe an Orange Scroll or two. When you're ready, come back to the flame and get ready to enter another tower. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Hyper Helmet ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Items: Hyper Helmet, Circle Heart From the flame, head to the right and go through the 4th door you find (stay along the bottom of the screen to avoid Dungeon #8). This is Tower #4 on the map. Nothing special about the climb up the stairs, just make sure you stop to kill any bats that come swooping from the top of the screen. They're fast and they can kill you if you try to run by them! Your Gloves should make it relatively easy to hit them. When you get to the inner part, climb up two levels and walk around in the upper left part of the ledge. This is the entrance to another Parallel Zone. As before, duck into a lower corner of your ledge and take care of all of the ghosts before moving. This time, we'll be climbing up. Be patient, making sure to retreat whenever any new ghosts appear, and you should be okay. After climbing up 3 levels, you'll find the Hyper Helmet. Once you equip this, the ghosts won't be able to hurt you nearly as much! At this point, you've got the main thing you've come for, so you can use an Orange Scroll to go back to the Holy Flame, or you can hang around a while longer to get a Circle Heart. Still in the Parallel Zone, climb to the top floor and walk along the top part of the ledge to find the door to the real world. From there, go down a couple of floors to find the Circle Heart. Once you get it, you could go back to the top floor and take on the boss, but I wouldn't recommend it. Although it's possible for players with "skillz" to defeat this tower's boss (the Centipede) right now, it's rather easy to die fighting it without a little more equipment. If survival is your game, take the extra time to come back here later and deal with the Centipede. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The First Bell ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Items: 2 Circle Hearts, Magic Mace Back at the Holy Flame again, recharge and regroup in Dungeon #7 again (if necessary), then head for Tower #5 (start at the flame, turn right, 3rd door). Now that you have 2 out of the 3 best defensive items, you'll find the going a lot easier. At the top of the stairs, in the upper right corner, is the entrance to another Parallel Zone. DO NOT go in there! You're still not strong enough to survive it yet! Inside the tower, climb up 5 levels to the 6th floor. Go to the lower right corner of this level to find a Secret Room. It has a small group of caterpillars, but with your armor, they're not dangerous anymore. Collect the Magic Mace here, then just exit the room the way you came. WARNING: DO NOT USE THE MAGIC MACE! WE NEED IT LATER! Oh yeah, try not to die until that time comes either! ;) Now it's decision time. Remember that Parallel Zone I told you not to enter? Well, if you want the item hidden inside of it (the Parallel Shot), then you'll want to skip this tower's boss for now, so that this tower will still be here later (when you're properly equipped). You can either jump ahead to the next section of this walkthrough or go take on the boss. Your call, but we'll be getting the Double Shot soon enough, which I consider to be a better item than the Parallel Shot. * BOSS: THE WHEELER * This battle will take some time, but it should be pretty easy. As soon as you appear, run to the left corner of the screen. Stand there and throw diagonal shots at it. The only thing you need to worry about is that the Wheeler can move across the entire length of the screen. This means that even if you're hiding in your little corner, it can still hit you when it flies directly over you. When this happens, forget about shooting and be ready to dodge. The shots fired by the Wheeler always come out of the orb that circles around it. Keep watching it to figure out how to move. Even if you take a few hits, you should be okay (although having a Red Drink or two couldn't hurt). After you hit it many (many) times, the boss dies, leaving a bell behind. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Holy Flame ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Items: None If you fought the boss, recover the bell it left behind. Then you will have a choice, when you get back to the Holy Flame: You can burn the bell right now, which will recover all of your hit points. However, you DON'T have to burn it yet. Eventually, you'll have to burn all 7 bells, but until you have them all, you can save burning them for when you need to recharge. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shield of the King ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Items: Shield of the King (you were expecting a Blue Necklace?), Parallel Shot (optional) Regardless of whether you fought the Wheeler, the next step is to get the final bit of protective gear, the Shield of the King. This is the toughest one to get, so it has been saved for last. Bring at least 2 Red Drinks, just to be safe. From the Holy Flame, enter the path to Tower #6 (2nd door going right). Once there, don't climb any stairs, just walk into the lower right corner to find a Secret Room. I hope you still have your Magic Mace. If not, you're about to die. There are about 8 bats in this room, and if any of them hit you more than a couple of times, you're done. The only way to survive them is to use the Mace. Anyway, as soon as you appear in the Secret Room, go to your subscreen and use the Magic Mace. When you go back to the game screen, you won't be able to shoot your sword, but you'll have a bunch of fireballs circling around you. Stand in the safest place you can find and then stand still, waiting for the bats to run into the shield and die (if you find yourself taking damage, try another spot...remember that these bats only move diagonally). Once the bats are gone, you can claim your prize, the Shield of the King. Once you equip this, the game suddenly gets 20 times easier, since you now have all 3 of the game's best defensive items! As your reward for all your hard work, go out of this Secret Room back to the Holy Flame screen and run into a few enemies, taking note of how little damage you take! Have fun! You've earned it! NOTE: Now that you have the shield, if you skipped the Wheeler boss in Tower #5 so you could get the Parallel Shot, now is the time to go back to that tower and get that item and beat the boss. For the Parallel Shot, go to the top of the stairs and walk around the upper right of that ledge to find a Parallel Zone. Once there, work your way down to find the power-up, then go to the second level from the bottom to find the exit (upper right). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Second Bell ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Items: Circle Heart, Double Shot (optional), Dragon Slayer Okay, now that we have all of the armor and stuff, how about we get some better weapons? Recharge again (if needed), then go to Tower #7 (from the flame, 1st door on the right). NOTE: If you got the Parallel Shot, you probably don't want the Double Shot, so skip the next secret. Climb 6 flights of stairs, then walk around the upper right part of the ledge you get to. You'll find a Parallel Zone. Take out the swarm of bats (you'll get bounced around a bit, but the damage shouldn't be that bad). Once they're gone, head downward to find the Double Shot. This awesome item lets you fire TWO swords on the screen at once! Now you can actually afford to miss a shot now and then. Plus, it's easier to rapid-fire shots from longer distances (HUGE advantage against bosses). To return to the real world, go to the bottom of the steps and walk around the middle of the right side. Now climb the stairs and enter the tower. Inside, climb 3 ladders to the 4th floor. Search the lower left corner of the ledge to find a Secret Room. Another swarm of bats awaits you, but the prize for getting past them is the mighty Dragon Slayer, the best sword you can get (short of the last stage of the game)! Killing enemies will happen much faster now! Leave the room and head for the top. * BOSS: THE GREAT BURN * This battle is a lot like fighting the Wheeler, only your new weapons will make it a lot shorter. Hide in the lower left corner and do your diagonal shots, as usual. When the monster gets close to you, be prepared to dodge. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Third Bell ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Items: Circle Heart, Gauntlets We have one more weapon to collect, and it's in Tower #2. From the flame, go left 2 doors. Climb the stairs (nothing interesting here) and on the inside, climb 5 ladders to the 6th floor. The lower left part of this level has a Secret Room. The Secret Room has lots of ghosts, but with all the equipment you have, it will be an easy battle. Collect and equip the Gauntlets to fully transform Prince Myer into a killing machine! Your throwing speed is now so fast that you can hardly see the swords! When combined with the Double Shot, you can rapid fire at enemies from any distance with ease! Your first victim will be the boss of this tower... * BOSS: THE DEATH BEAR * Coming here at any time before now would be a pretty difficult battle. This bear uses a much more direct approach when it attacks. It actually moves towards you at all times, trying to get above you. Luckily, it can only move sideways. Proceed to your usual nook in the lower left and rattle off a bunch of diagonal shots (at lighting speed, thanks to your new Gauntlets). If you're fast enough, the boss will die before he gets to you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Things Change ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Items: Green Drinks, Orange Scrolls (optional) Once you leave a tower with your 3rd bell (via Orange Scroll or just walking), you'll notice that the monsters have changed slightly in the Overworld. There are tougher ones than there used to be. This is just one of the effects of making progress in the game. The other thing is that the shops all contain new and better items. However, some of the item types have moved around a bit, so when visiting the dungeons for your item refills, you'll have to look in different places. One comfort though: The enemies in the dungeons have NOT changed. Traveling inside of them will not be any harder than before. Green Drinks can be bought in shops that carry Item Set "E" for 99 Ludder. You can easily find such a shop by entering Dungeon #7 and going right once. These things restore 200 hit points each! For those of you who like Orange Scrolls, they are now sold in shops that have Item Set "H". Remember where you bought the Leather Armor? It's the same shop, which is also easily reached in Dungeon #7 (see the above section called "Another Shopping Trip" for directions). If you plan on lasting a while, you should probably buy a couple of extra scrolls, as they will get a LOT more expensive later! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Fourth Bell ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Items: Circle Heart, Cup The order in which you choose to do the rest of the towers is not as important anymore, since you have all of the game's best equipment, both for offense and defense. Some bosses are easier than others, so I will do the towers in order of boss difficulty. HOWEVER, we will be doing Tower #3 LAST, so that we can delay getting the Blue Necklace until the end. That way, if something goes wrong and you die, you won't lose your chance to use it on Rubas. The easiest remaining tower (other than #3, which is REALLY easy) is Tower #1, first door left of the flame. Armed as you are, this place is so easy, it's almost boring. Climb up the stairs to enter the tower (nothing noteworthy). Once inside, the 6th floor has a Parallel Zone. Walk around the upper left to find it. A Cup will be sitting next to you when you appear. Save this item for when you're low on money during your shopping trips. It instantly fills your Ludder up to the maximum of 250! The exit to the real world is one the same ledge, in the lower right. * BOSS: THE COLD KILLER * New-look enemy, same old tricks. Go to the lower left and fire away. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Fifth Bell ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Again, order isn't not a big deal, but the next tower we'll tackle here is Tower #6. From the flame, go right and enter the 1st door you see (with Tower #7 completed, that door is gone now, making our goal the first door). This is another very easy climb, thanks to all of your equipment, but don't let that allow your guard to go down. The boss isn't a cake walk! NOTE: There's a Secret Room in the lower right corner of the top floor of this tower. Don't bother with it. All it contains is a Figure, which is not an important item, especially at this stage of the game. * BOSS: THE BEAT PLANT * (Okay, am I the only one who thought that a beat plant was a type of factory? It just doesn't sound cool as the name of a monster!) Anyway, while this boss simply moves back and forth, it can quickly get above your hiding place in the corner for an attack. You have to be ready to dodge the monster's shots at a moment's notice. Even with all of your armor, you can only take about 4-5 hits! Kill him as fast (and safely) as you can! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- More Changes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Collecting your 5th bell is another milestone the game uses as an excuse to change things around in the Overworld. The enemies are tougher still (almost to the point of difficult, but not really) and the shops have new items again. You can now buy Blue Drinks in several shops (FULL recharge). The cheapest one is in Item Set "B", for 90 Ludder. Dungeon #7 has a shop with this set (see above section called "Another Shopping Trip" for directions). Make sure you buy the drink on the right, in this shop. The drink on the left that costs only 70 Ludder is just an Orange Drink, which restores only 100 HP (not a good deal). Item Set "B" is now the only place you can buy Orange Scrolls, but at 190 Ludder! If you don't already have them, then don't bother. At this point, it's easy enough to walk up and down the towers anyway. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Sixth Bell ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We've already been to Tower #4, so we just have to go back there and beat the boss. Get a Blue Drink, if you don't have any, then head for that tower. Since Towers 5-7 have been beaten, they're doors are all gone, making the door we want the 1st one from the flame. Make your way to the top and get ready to take on the Centipede. * BOSS: THE CENTIPEDE * There's a good reason why we have saved this boss for near the end. It's a fight unlike any of the other boss battles. This critter moves back and forth across the screen in waves, some larger than others. This makes it very difficult to dodge. If it touches you, you'll take a LOT of damage, even with all of your armor. The Centipede also shoots fireballs straight down, but they don't hurt nearly as much as when it runs into you. Anyway, since you have all of the great weapons, this battle should go pretty fast. As soon as you appear, move left to avoid being touched by the body of the Centipede (it always starts out really close to you and moves right). After that, stand in the middle and pelt him with swords until it comes at you. When it gets close to you, start running away. Wait for it to make a large wave to the top of the screen, then run under it and begin shooting again. He shouldn't live long enough to pass you again. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Seventh Bell ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- One tower left! I trust you can find it, since it's the only remaining open door. ;) Climb up six levels to the 7th floor and walk into the upper left corner to find the Secret Room. Take care of the swarm of bats and go to the lower left corner of the bottom level. Whoa! Here's a first: a Secret Room WITHIN a Secret Room! It's hard to see, but look in the center of this room for your prize, the Blue Necklace! This wonderful item makes you invincible for a short time, PLUS (unlike other protective items in this game) YOUR SWORD STILL WORKS when you're using it! Use this wherever you like, but I highly recommend saving it for Rubas, since he is (naturally) the toughest enemy in the game. Moving on, proceed to the top of this tower and take care of some long-unfinished business... * BOSS: THE GREAT WING * If you got past the Centipede, this one should be cake! Really, it's no different from most of the other bosses you've fought (in fact, it's probably the easiest boss in the game). For best success, follow this formula: Lower left corner + diagonal shots = Not-so-great Wing! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To The Gate of Rubas ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Congratulations! You have collected all 7 of the bells! Now we're about ready to take on the wizard Rubas and finish the game! First, a couple of housekeeping things: Make sure you burn all of the bells at the Holy Flame, if you've been saving them for extra refills of hit points. Next, go into Dungeon #7 and get yourself a Green Scroll from the shop just right of the first room. If you don't have them already, go shopping for a Blue Drink or two, then use the scroll to warp to the game's starting point. NOTE: Now that you've beaten all 7 towers, if you go to the 2 shops that you used to be able to reach from the Overworld, you'll find that they are now dungeons (numbers 9 and 10 in the Maps section). Don't bother with these places anymore...the new dungeons don't have much to offer. Once at the starting point, go right and enter the second door you come to (it used to be caged shut, but you opened it by burning the 7 bells). You will appear in a staircase section similar to the first parts of a normal tower. Orange (?!) bats will swoop in at lightning speed. Counter with your equally fast swords and try not to take a lot of damage. BE ON GUARD HERE! Even with all of your protective gear, you will not survive a lot of hits. Above all, DO NOT get touched by the large ghosts as you climb. Those things will probably pin you and end your game! When you reach the top of the stairs, you'll find a sword lying on the ground. This is Splendor, the legendary sword (why in the world was that wizard stupid enough to leave THIS lying around???). This sword is the most powerful weapon in the game. Once you equip it, enter the doorway and prepare for a series of boss battles. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Final Battle ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Before Rubas will accept your challenge to his domain, he first sends his closest friends to deal with you... * FINAL BOSS #1: THE DRAGON * This first battle should be a piece of cake. The Dragon flies around the screen and shoots downward, just like the Centipede, only it doesn't move up and down as much. When it first appears, move left to avoid damage, then go up to the middle of the top part of the room. From here, the Dragon will be an easy target, as it flies from the right side of the screen, and then straight across the bottom moving left. If you shoot fast enough, you should kill it before it does anything else. Once you destroy the Dragon, the screen flashes and goes dark. After that, you immediately begin the 2nd battle... * FINAL BOSS #2: THE TWIN HEADS * Two giant heads (of lions maybe?) attack by flying all over the screen. They move pretty fast, but it's nothing you can't avoid, as long as you're careful. There's even a set pattern to their movement. When you first appear on the screen, wait for the upper head to move out of the way, then get to the top half of the screen. The bottom head should fly right under you from left to right, then left again. Once it does this, move to the lower right corner for a while and attack (either head is fine, since damage is split equally between them). Watch for one of the heads to move to the lower left corner. When it does this, it's about to make another back-and-forth sweep across the screen's bottom, so be ready to move back to the upper middle. Continue this pattern until they die. The screen flashes and goes dark again. When you appear again, Rubas will appear, and he isn't too happy with you... * THE BATTLE WITH RUBAS * This battle will either be extremely easy or painfully difficult, depending on if you still have the Blue Necklace. If you have it, use it here to become invincible and just unload on him with your new sword! He'll be dead before the necklace wears off. Otherwise, read on for how to beat him the hard way... Rubas has a very simple, but deadly attack. He walks around the screen with a force field of heads circling around him. His goal is to simply touch you with these heads or his body. Even if you're at full power with a high maximum HP, it only takes him 3 or 4 hits to kill you, but he usually pins you to death if he touches you at all! BE READY! This battle will either be won or lost, based on your timing of a very simple move: As soon as wizard appears, WAIT for him to move left, then begin walking to the right (DON'T MOVE TOO SOON). You should be in between Rubas and his circle of heads, so don't go so far that you run into one of the heads. If you haven't been hit yet, then you did the move correctly and have a chance to win. Now, Rubas will try to follow you, but after every few steps towards you, he moves up and down for the same number of steps. When he moves right, move with him, but STOP when he changes directions. He'll move towards you again, so inch a little farther to the right, stopping again when he shifts. Keep repeating this process until you get within 3 lengths of brick from the right side of the game screen. If you make it here, you will be outside of Rubas's movement range. All he will be able to do is move up and down, so as long as you can stand still between him and his heads as he moves like this, you're in a safe spot! Now just fire away at him to end the game! THAT'S IT! YOU'VE JUST BEATEN ONE OF THE HARDEST GAMES ON ANY GAMING SYSTEM! Jump for joy, pat yourself on the back a few times, then enjoy the cheesy ending (circa 1986, so what did you expect?). ############################################################################### # Maps/Secrets # ############################################################################### This section will show maps for the Overworld and the 10 Dungeons (no maps are necessary for the Towers). ############################################################################### There are a few basic items that can be found by killing monsters or just walking around in the overworld and tower areas: Heart: Gives you 10 hit points Circle Heart: Increases your maximum hit points by 10 "L" Coin: Worth 1 Ludder (the money of this game) Star Coin: Worth 5 Ludder The rest of the items in Deadly Towers are VERY hard to come by, unless you know where to look. They are found in shops, Secret Rooms, and Parallel Zones, all of which have invisible entrances. You have to walk on every square inch of the game screens to find them. IMPORTANT: If you collect any of the items below and die before you can use it, then it disappears from your subscreen! You cannot get a password (without hacking) that starts your game with unused items! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Weapons ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * SWORDS * Your attack power is determined by the strength of your sword: Short Sword: You start with the weakest sword in the game (natch). For some reason, it's also sold in the shops, so be careful not to buy it. Normal Sword: A decent upgrade, but by the time you can buy it, it's not really worth the money. Dragon Slayer: NOW we're talking! After using the other swords for most of the game, you'll be thrilled to get this one! Hidden and VERY hard to get, but go for it anyway...you'll be glad you did. Splendor: The most powerful sword in the game can only be found near the lair of Rubas. Don't forget to equip it before the final battle. * GLOVES * In case you haven't noticed, Prince Myer would not do well as an outfielder on a baseball team (by the time he could throw the ball home from right field, a runner could circle the bases a couple of times over). Likewise, when he throws a sword, it moves VERY slowly across the game screen. That's where gloves can help. When equipped with these, the prince can throw swords much faster. Glove: With this, you can throw swords twice as fast as without. A great buy early in the game. Normal Glove: Speeds up the sword even more than the Glove. I usually skip this one, because by the time you can buy it, the Gauntlet is within reach. Gauntlet: Oh yeah! When Myer puts this thing on, he can suddenly whip swords across the screen at light speed! Like all of the best items, this baby is hidden and heavily guarded. It's still well worth the effort. * SPECIAL SKILLS * There are a couple of items that increase your offensive powers by letting you throw more swords at a time. You can pick from one of two styles, but unfortunately, you can't have both: Double Shot: This one's my favorite of the two. One of the biggest pains in this game is that when you throw a sword, not only does it move slowly (without gloves anyway), but you also can't throw another one until the first one leaves the screen. With this, you can shoot two swords before you have to wait! Hidden, guarded, but highly recommended! Parallel Shot: Some people prefer this weapon instead of the Double Shot. It lets you throw two swords with a single push of the button. This increases the size of your shots, making it easier to hit large enemies. The only drawback is that when one sword hits something and the other doesn't, you still have to wait for that sword to leave the screen before you can shoot again. Without the Double Shot, it's still good to have, if you can get to it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Defensive Items ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The biggest reason why people hate Deadly Towers is because Prince Myer starts out as the absolute weakest hero of all time. Taking any damage at all tends to kill him. However, this is merely the effect of being unprotected by armor. Once you start equipping some of these items, you'll be able to take a lot more hits without dying all the time. Defensive strength is determined by the total sum of your helmet, shield, and armor. Each of these three seem to have equal strength, but work best when grouped together. You would be wise to get the best of these items as soon as possible (the walkthrough explains how to do just that). Chain Helmet / Shield / Leather Armor: They don't help much, but if you plan on taking any damage in this game (and living to tell about it), they're worth buying early on in the game. Iron Helmet / Lion Shield / Plate Armor: Each of these are better than their ordinary counterparts, but if you follow the walkthrough, you'll have the best stuff by the time it's possible to buy them. Hyper Helmet / Shield of the King / Hyper Armor: These are the 3 most important items in the game! With all of them, enemies that used to do 50+ hit points of damage can only do about 10! I cannot imagine anyone beating this game without them. As with the best weapons, all 3 of these items are hidden away and guarded, but don't let that stop you! Evil Shield: Late in the game, you'll find a rusty old shield for sale in the shops. DON'T BUY IT! If you equip it, even though the game tells you it's a normal shield, it actually leaves you will NO shield in your equipment list! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Items ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These are not as vital as the weapons and defensive stuff. Still many of these items are extremely helpful. Getting them can be the difference between winning and losing. * DRINKS * If you've played a lot of RPG's, you can probably guess what drinks do for you. Chugging one of these will restore some of your hit points, depending on the color. Only the Red one is available early on, but you can buy Green Drinks for a good price after beating 3 towers. Blue: FULL recharge. Green: 200 HP. Orange: 100 HP. Red: 50 HP. * SCROLLS * Scrolls contain magic spells, but usually only the Orange one is really worth paying for: Blue: When used inside a dungeon, this scroll will RANDOMLY warp you to another room within the dungeon. Don't waste your time with this. Dungeons have over 200 rooms and not much variety. Using this item is a sure way to get yourself lost. Worse, the manual warns that it's possible to warp into a "closed" room, which probably means that there are special rooms in the dungeons that can't be reached by walking around normally, but that means that you can't get back either (without another warping item). Green: Warps you to the starting point of the game. Only useful if you have beaten all 7 towers and want a fast way back to Rubas. Otherwise, you start at the beginning often enough from dying! Orange: Warps you to the screen with the holy flame where you can burn the bells from the towers. VERY handy after you've beaten the boss of a tower and find yourself low on energy. You can quickly burn the bell you just got and get a full recharge of hit points in the process. You can also use this item to quickly reach the towers without going through the entire Overworld. Red: This one had potential when I first discovered it. When used in a dungeon, this scroll can destroy all of the enemies in a room. HOWEVER, it ONLY works in dungeons! HUGE disappointment. Don't waste your time. * CRYSTALS * Like scrolls, crystals also contain various magic spells: Blue: Supposedly decreases the hit points of an enemy. I've tried this one a few times, but haven't noticed much of a change. Haven't used it on everything though... Green: About as big a disappointment as the Red Scroll. This one can freeze all of the monsters on the screen for a short time. It even works in any location. PROBLEM: While the spell is in effect, YOU CAN'T SHOOT YOUR SWORD! With that, it's not worth buying. Orange: Turns the floors of rooms near the exit to dark gray. This only works on the 8 rooms that directly touch the exit room (including diagonals). The dungeon maps in this guide should be helpful enough that you don't need to buy this. Red: Used a Blue Scroll or went wandering in a dungeon? Lost? Never fear! This crystal will warp you to the exit room! * NECKLACES * The necklaces in this game are still a mystery to me. The manual talks of how these items are supposed to increase your defensive powers, but other than the Blue Necklace (VERY USEFUL) they don't seem to do much. Also, I have yet to find the Orange Necklace. However, I found a mystery necklace called "agate," which according to the dictionary, is NOT a color. This could be a gross misspelling of the word "orange," since it does have an effect similar to what the manual says about the Orange Necklace. Blue: When used, you become temporarily invincible (and yes, your sword works). Perfect for boss battles. Unfortunately, there's only one in the whole game. Green: Temporarily increases your defensive strength. Try it if you like. Personally, I'd rather just buy Green Drinks. Orange/Agate: Small increase in defensive strength. Red: For a whopping 240 ludder, I bought this necklace and tried it in a bunch of places. I think I got took...it appears to be useless. Try your luck with it and see if you can find something. * MISC * Here are the remaining items, which don't fit into any other group. Some of these are must-haves! Magic Mace: Creates a temporary force field around you that can be used to attack enemies. GREAT against large groups of bats or ghosts, even if you can't use your sword while it's in effect. Hyper Boots: These boots increase your walking speed when walking diagonally. For some reason, you don't go any faster when walking straight up/down/left/right. Still, you can keep them forever, even if you die. The also work great for dodging fast enemies and climbing stairs. Cup: Using this item will instantly give you the maximum of 250 Ludder. If you find it, save it for when you're in a shop and are short on cash. This is (understandably) hidden far away from the shops. Evil Cup: Indiana Jones spin: "As the true Cup will bring you Ludder, a false Cup will take it from you." To be exact, you'll have ZERO Ludder after using this! This can only be found in a shop late in the game, so just don't buy it. There's only one real Cup and it's NOT sold in the shops. Magic Key: On Screen #5 of the Overworld, there are a pair of deadly knights guarding one of the doors. They cannot be killed, no matter how many times you hit them. If you want to get past them, use this key to freeze them. Not too useful, since it's only used in this one place. Still, once you use this key, it stays with you, even when you die. Fire Magic: When used in a dungeon, creates flames in rooms that line up with the room containing the exit. They appear over the side doors if the exit is in one of those directions, or above the top and bottom ones if you need to go up or down. Like with the Orange Crystal, you have the maps already, so you shouldn't need any more help from buying this item. NOTE: This takes effect after you use it AND LEAVE your current room, so be sure to backtrack if you want to check the room where you first used the magic. Figure: Freezes "Humanoid" enemies, which are basically anything that's as tall as Prince Myer. Lasts for short time, but you can actually shoot while it's in effect. Still not worth buying though. ############################################################################### # Shops # ############################################################################### Shops are hidden throughout the overworld and dungeons. When you find one, you can buy many different kinds of items using your Ludder (money). There are many shops throughout the game, but each one will always have one of 8 possible sets of items for sale. The only catch is that these sets change, depending on how many bells you have recovered from the towers. Each set changes twice: once when you collect your 3rd bell and again when you get your 5th one. The items that appear later in the game are generally more powerful, but some are definitely more useful than others. For example, you can buy the 2nd level of defensive items after beating 3 towers, but if you followed the walkthrough above, you should already have the best helmet, shield, and armor already. Check the Items section above for more info on what each item does. Listed below are each of the 8 item sets, showing what appears at what time: * Set A * 0-2 Bells: Red Drink (30), Chain Helmet (80), Fire Magic (60) 3-4 Bells: Red Drink (45), Iron Helmet (150), Red Scroll (73) 5-7 Bells: Red Drink (55), Iron Helmet (150), Fire Magic (80) * Set B * 0-2 Bells: Red Drink (40), Shield (80), Red Crystal (60) 3-4 Bells: Blue Scroll (40), Lion Shield (90), Fire Magic (80) 5-7 Bells: Orange Drink (70), Orange Scroll (190), Blue Drink (90) * Set C * 0-2 Bells: Red Drink (40), Gloves (100), Agate Necklace (90) 3-4 Bells: Red Drink (50), Normal Gloves (180), Green Necklace (90) 5-7 Bells: Green Drink (99), Normal Gloves (150), Blue Scroll (95) * Set D * 0-2 Bells: Red Drink (50), Shield (100), Figure (90) 3-4 Bells: Red Drink (60), Magic Key (120), Orange Crystal (90) 5-7 Bells: Red Drink (70), Green Necklace (200), Red Crystal (100) * Set E * 0-2 Bells: Red Drink (50), Short Sword (100), Chain Helmet (92) 3-4 Bells: Green Drink (99), Normal Sword (140), Figure (90) 5-7 Bells: Red Drink (50), Normal Sword (240), Green Scroll (90) * Set F * 0-2 Bells: Red Drink (99), Chain Helmet (100), Shield (90) 3-4 Bells: Orange Drink (99), Iron Helmet (120), Blue Crystal (45) 5-7 Bells: Orange Drink (99), Magic Mace (150), Green Crystal (130) * Set G * 0-2 Bells: Red Drink (70), Orange Scroll (100), Hyper Boots (232) 3-4 Bells: Red Drink (80), Green Scroll (123), Evil Shield (80) 5-7 Bells: Red Drink (98), Evil Cup (150), Red Necklace (240) * Set H * 0-2 Bells: Red Drink (40), Leather Armor (100), Figure (98) 3-4 Bells: Red Drink (60), Plate Armor (155), Orange Scroll (90) 5-7 Bells: Blue Drink (99), Plate Armor (150), Lion Shield (99) ############################################################################### # Passwords # ############################################################################### For those of you who are used to games that have a save feature and don't like writing down passwords, this section is for you.
