Cosmo Police Galivan (NES) FAQ / Walkthrough, 1.00 By Griffin Knodle (Jair), 4-22-2000 jair1@email.com The Vale -- http://fly.to/vale ------------------------------------ CONTENTS ------------------------------------ General advice and comments Weapons and items Boss strategies Questions with hints Maps and walkthrough (spoilers) Questions with spoiler answers ------------------------------------ GENERAL ADVICE AND COMMENTS ------------------------------------ - Talk to everyone and take notes on what they say. Some monsters in the alien dimension have valuable advice too. - If you get stuck, try many different things. You'll find secret passages and hidden warp holes at many apparent dead ends. (In the ordinary world, that is; in the alien dimension, dead ends are just that. And there are no secrets in rooms with people in them.) Try using the four Crystals and testing the walls and floor with your special weapons. - You may want to make yourself a map as you go. The maps in the walkthrough are SPOILERS, because they show all the secret passages and say what item does what where. - There are several "computers" in the game, which are big silver machines with swirly radar-like dishes on top. Destroying them will make something good happen somewhere else, such as a gate opening or a new elevator, passage, or warp hole appearing. - To talk to people, face them and crouch. If you want to talk to them again, you'll have to leave and re-enter the room. - The computer screens are the warp holes to the alien dimension. To use them, jump in front of them and hold A and B. - Practice jumping and swinging your sword upwards. You'll find yourself doing this move a LOT, so get used to it early. - Your game is saved automatically as you go along. - When you continue a saved game, your experience resets to the minimum for your experience level. Your blade points stay the same. - If you're stuck and need help, come ask at the Vale's message board. ------------------------------------ WEAPONS AND ITEMS ------------------------------------ Blades: There are seven blades in the game: Beam, Metal, Fire, Laser, Thunder, Hyper, and Cosmo. The first six start at level C and grow up to level A as you defeat enemies. The Cosmo Blade starts at level F and grows one level for each of your other blades that has reached level A. (You have to do something special before it will start gaining levels, though.) Each blade is about twice as powerful as the blade before it, and each level is about twice as powerful as the level before it. The first six blades gain levels at the following point totals: Beam: 100 B, 300 A Metal: 120 B, 400 A Fire: 140 B, 500 A Laser: 160 B, 600 A Thunder: 180 B, 700 A Hyper: 200 B, 800 A Important note: You'll want all your blades to be at level A by the end, so save yourself a lot of grief and do it sooner instead of later. Beam and Metal are especially easy to miss out on raising, and it's nearly impossible to do in the final area because they're so weak. Special weapons: You'll find these as you go along. They're generally much stronger than the blade you'll have at the time. Four of them are long range, too, and can be fired sideways or up. Note that all of them are vital to proceed at several places in the game. Certain walls can be destroyed by a certain weapon. You'll know you've found one because when you hit it with that weapon, you'll see a little bubbly hit mark, like when you hit an enemy. Hyper Ray, 5 CP (Area 1): A red lightning bolt flies straight; three hits destroy red gates Cosmo Boomerang, 10 CP (Area 2): Boomerang flies straight and returns; three hits destroy certain walls Capsule Bomber, 15 CP (Area 2): Short-range bomb flies away and down; destroys certain floors Spark Ball, 20 CP (Area 4): Medium-range spark explosion flies straight; three hits destroy certain walls Prism Wave, 30 CP (Area 5): Flies in a wave pattern; three hits destroy certain walls Items: These have various special effects. The Crystals destroy certain walls and other things, opening new passages. The other items help you in battle in various ways. Star Crystal, 10 CP (Area 1): Reveals certain hidden things Moon Crystal, 20 CP (Area 2): Reveals certain hidden things Auto Protect, 100 CP (Area 3): Instantly fills your "GP" gauge, equipping your cyborg suit, and keeps the GP gauge full automatically until you leave the area Blade Power, 50 CP (Area 3): No apparent effect Barrier Shield, 80 CP (Area 3): Prevents damage in barrier rooms later in the game Life Capsule, 500 CP (Area 4): Restores 1000 HP Earth Crystal, 100 CP (Area 4): Reveals certain hidden things Jet Boots, 200 CP (Area 5): Hover, moving freely in any direction, for about 20 seconds Cosmo Crystal, 120 CP (Area 5): Reveals certain hidden things ------------------------------------ BOSS STRATEGIES ------------------------------------ 1. Purple Demon He hops back and forth until he's close to you. Then he jumps straight up four times, and at the peak of his fourth jump throws three fireballs. Jump and hit him in the head repeatedly. When he goes up for the fourth time, move away and dodge the fire. 2. Metal Snake Only the head can hurt you and be hurt. The snake moves in a wave pattern back and forth across the area. Start by hitting it with the Cosmo Boomerang until it changes color. Then stand on the left island and wait for the snake to approach from the right. As it comes down on the right side of the island, jump over the head and its fireball and come down on the right edge, hitting it on the way down if you can. As it comes back from the left, jump the fireball and hit the snake. Run under it when it passes overhead. Hit it some more if you can, or dodge if it's firing again. Then repeat the process. All the bosses from now on will probably take a few tries to beat. 3. Mechanical Dragon After he flies in, he starts running after you periodically breathing fire. But if you move towards him, he backs up. After he breathes fire, rush him and attack by jumping and hitting him in the head. You'll have time to jump four times or so. Then run back the way you came to avoid his fire. The key is to chase him far enough back that you'll have room to retreat and dodge his fire. 4. Dragon Worm It moves kind of like the second boss. Sometimes it moves in a wave, sometimes a zigzag. It comes out of the ground, crosses the screen, then comes back and goes back underground. Start by hitting its head with the Spark Ball until it changes color. Hit it a couple of times as it approaches, then back well away. Move in as it changes direction and hit it a few more times as it heads back underground. Go in with lots of CP for Life Capsule, because this boss inflicts a lot of damage. 5. Huge Fly He moves towards you, stops to breathe fire straight down and fire a shot at you, moves towards you some more, then swoops down away from you as he fires another shot, then repeats the pattern. Attack him by moving underneath him after he breathes fire and attacking upwards 2 or 3 times, then move away before he swoops. You may be tempted to use the Jet Boots to attack him through the air, but that didn't work very well for me. Start by hitting him with the Prism Wave until he changes color, then switch to the Hyper Blade and stab up from underneath. Go in with full CP for Life Capsule. You'll need it. 6. Madius Madius first appears as a huge blue knight. He jumps towards you and swings his sword, sending stars out from the point where it strikes the ground. Then he jumps away and repeats the pattern. Use the Jet Boots to hover safely above his sword strike. One of the stars will fly directly at you, so watch out. Zip down and hit him in the head a couple of times, then move away so you won't get hit when he jumps back. This battle isn't really too hard, but he does inflict a lot of damage, so be careful! 7. Madius Madius now appears as a huge silver robot-like figure. He drops from above, jumps across the screen, fires three shots, and rises back up off the screen. His shots fly straight at you, and if they miss the first time, they'll come back at you when they hit the edge of the screen. The key here is to avoid damage. Use the Jet Boots to fly and hit him in the head. Try to hit him when he first drops down. Then fly low as he passes overhead. Chase him and hit him once or twice before he fires, then get away and try to avoid his shots. Keep your HP high at all times. Good luck! ------------------------------------ QUESTIONS WITH HINTS ------------------------------------ This doesn't cover everything that might come up, just the things that might really puzzle you. If you're stuck but can't find anything relevant here, that probably means that you've either missed a hint about what to do or haven't tried something you should have tried. For example, if you're stuck, try going back to some apparent dead ends and using Crystals, testing the walls and floor with your special weapons, etc. This section just has hints. For direct, "spoiler" answers, go to the last section. What do I do with the Capsule Bomber in area 2? - Someone gave you a clue about where to use it. - Can you find a room with no enemies in it? What do I do in area 3? - Did you hear a clue about the wall below Shadia's room? - Can you find Shadia? - Why don't you mess around at the bottom of the corridor just outside his room? Where's the Cosmo Suit? - If you've explored everywhere you can (safely) go and haven't found anything, then there must be a secret passage somewhere that you haven't found. - Have you tried using your Crystals and special weapons? OK, I've got the Cosmo Suit, but what do I do now? - Have you explored the ocean and found the Spark Ball? - Did you hear a hint about destroying walls with it? - It's tricky because it takes 3 hits to destroy a wall, and it's not apparent that you're hitting the right place. - Again, check dead ends. - The second spot is in the area you can reach only after finding the first spot. Where's the boss in area 4? - You should have heard something about a certain pillar. - Can you find a place in the ocean that has a bunch of pillar-like objects? - Can you get on top of those pillars somehow? What do I do with the Prism Wave? I found the wall I could destroy with the Prism Wave, but what do I do now? - Check the vertical corridor by the guy who gives you the hint about the nearby wall. - "A" wall doesn't necessarily mean "one and only one" wall. What now? Where's the new blade in area 5? - Remember the clue about the Jet Boots and the Cosmo Crystal? - If you don't have both those items, you need to explore more. (See previous question.) - Can you find a barrier you can't reach except by flying? What do I do in the hallway in 5-2 that just keeps repeating? - Nothing. - Remember the guy who said something about a "false" warp hole? - What did he say to do near that false warp hole? - If at first you don't succeed.... I'm stuck in area 6. Where's the Cosmo Blade? - Did you hear a clue about the so-called "warm wall?" - I guess a warm wall would be one near some high-voltage wiring. (Yeah, I didn't think much of that clue either, but I decided to stick with a faithful translation.) How do I find out the password? - There are 4 clues available. - All 4 are in the alien dimension, and 3 will come from monsters. - Be generous with your CP. - 2 clues are in 6-2, which is hard to find. - Have you found and destroyed the computer? - There's yet another wall somewhere that you can blast with the Prism Wave. ------------------------------------ MAPS AND WALKTHROUGH ------------------------------------ ************************************ ************************************ ********** SPOILERS *********** ************************************ ************************************ These contain spoilers, so read them only if you're stuck and need to be bailed out or if you just want to beat the game without bothering to solve the puzzles on your own. Yes, the maps are spoilers too, because they reveal the locations of the secret passages that make up many of the game's puzzles. It's tedious now; it's nearly impossible if you wait until the final area. There's a great place for building levels just right of the start where the purple flying critters drop two at a time. Head right, fall, head down, head right. In the vertical corridor, take the middle hall and defeat the bubble monsters to get the Cosmo Parts. Head down and all the way left to get the Cosmo Boots. Head up with your new jumping power and get the Moon Crystal from the guy behind the gate you couldn't reach before. Go down and right and use the Moon Crystal to stop the waterfall. Go back left and go down the new elevator. Go right and beat the dragon for the Fire Blade. Go left through the warp hole. Go all the way right and beat the green head for the Capsule Bomber. Head up, right, and out. Make your way back to the right, head to the top of the vertical corridor, go left, and use the Capsule Bomber on the floor in the empty room. Go down and left. Use the Moon Crystal at the waterfall to reveal a warp hole. In the alien dimension, go down and right. Beat the dragon for the Cosmo Boomerang. Head up and left and beat bubble boy for the Cosmo Eye. Head back to the middle hall, left, and out. Head up to the hall that was dark. Continue down to another hall with five blast spots in the floor. Jump down the second to find the warp to 3-2. Go down, right, up, left. Answer Yes until the medusa head attacks you, then defeat it for the Laser Blade. Go back down and left and warp out. Continue up to the top of the area and head right. From the start, go up and right. Crossing the sea is very perilous, because if you fall in you're basically dead meat. Face to the right so the green flying things will appear from the right. When they pass overhead to the left, jump to the next platform. Once you get across, don't use the warp hole. Instead, hit the right wall 3 times with the Cosmo Boomerang. Go through, answer No, and beat the fanged jellyfish thingy for the Cosmo Suit. Jump in the ocean and go all the way down and left. Beat another jellyfish monster for the Spark Ball. Make your way up, left, and out of the ocean. Go around up top and jump in again. This time, go immediately left and blast the wall 3 times with the Spark Ball. Destroy the computer. Go right, down, and left back to the main underwater corridor and take the new elevator down. Continue along and beat yet another jellyfish to get the wonderful Life Capsule. Beat the enemies in the next room right and warp to 4-3. Go up, left, down, and right to find the guy with the Earth Crystal. Go up and left and warp back out. Head back left to the vertical corridor and destroy the left wall with the Spark Ball. Go left and bomb the floor with the Capsule Bomber at the end of the hall. Go down and warp to 4-2. Go right, up, left, and say Yes to pay the fire lizard 1000 CP. He'll give you the Thunder Blade. Go right, down, right, and out. Go all the way back to the area over the ocean. Use the Earth Crystal on the large island in the middle (the top of the eighth pillar, that is). Use the warp hole, go left in 4-1, and warp out. You'll now be in the very top of the first vertical corridor. There's a pitfall in the floor to the left, so be careful! Throw Capsule Bombers to see where the solid floor ends. Continue left to the boss. ------------------------------------ AREA 5 - ROCKY FORTRESS ------------------------------------ Area 5: #-#-G-J I # # #-###-# H # #-####-B # # # # #-##E-# #-#-##-# # D-#-# # # #-C-###-# # #-#-##-# F-#-# # # # # C-###-# # #-#-##A A. Warp hole to 5 (I) Area 5-3: #-####-C #-####-A | | B-####-####-####-# A. From 5 B. Warp hole to 5 (I) C. Hyper Blade Some rooms in this area have flashing barriers at the ceiling that cause damage as long as you're in the room. Use the Barrier Shield to protect yourself. Explore the area and gather clues. Make your way to the top of the area. In the room that appears to be a dead end with a mechanical eye enemy in it, use the Earth Crystal to reveal the warp to 5-1. Go down and right and beat the medusa head for the Prism Wave. Go left, up, right, up, right, and warp out. Make your way back down to the right. In the long vertical corridor, directly right of the guy who tells you about the wall you can destroy with the Prism Wave, blast the right wall 3 times with the Prism Wave. Follow that new passage and destroy the computer. Go back, go down to the very bottom of that same vertical corridor, and blast the right wall with the Prism Wave there too. At the end of that passage, pay the robot 1000 CP and he'll attack you. Defeat him to get the Cosmo Crystal. Now go to the top of that vertical corridor and go right. A new passage will have opened up. Follow it. You'll eventually reach another robot. Defeat it for the Jet Boots, the coolest item in the game. ^_^ Now backtrack to the long vertical corridor and head left (as if you're going to the warp to 5-1). At the top of the next vertical corridor, use the Jet Boots. Fly up, past a jetpack soldier, directly into the barrier at the ceiling. Use the Cosmo Crystal to make the barrier and ceiling explode and vanish. Continue up through the air. You'll find a warp hole at the top. You can take it if you feel like wandering around pointlessly for a while. Otherwise, use the Earth Crystal 3 times, revealing 3 new warp holes. Enter the one on the lower right, the last one to appear, to warp to 5-3. Go down, left, up, and right to find the Hyper Blade. Go left, down, left, and out. Now go back down, right, and make your way to the top of the area to fight the boss. ------------------------------------ AREA 6 - SPACE AGE ------------------------------------ Area 6: #>K # # #-J-E-#-D-#-####-# # G-F-#C#-# # # #-#-##-# #-I # # B-###-#-######-#-###-# v v # # H-F#####-# # A##-# A. From 6 B. Good place to fill HP C. Good place to fill CP D. Final boss Start by following the passage to the second vertical corridor. Go down and left into the room with the barriers on the ceiling. Destroy the far left wall with the Prism Wave and go through to get the Cosmo Blade. It sucks right now, so don't use it. Go back right, fly up with the Jet Boots, go left, fly up some more, and follow the path along. Eventually, at the top of the area you'll meet a big scary blue robot head. Defeat it by running back and forth beneath it firing Prism Waves. You'll get the Cosmo Arm. Now backtrack until you're over the room where you got the Cosmo Blade, at the bottom of the first vertical corridor you had to fly up. Go left this time, to a warp to 6-1. Go down and right. You'll find a guy who will combine the power of your other blades into the Cosmo Blade. When each other blade reaches level A, the Cosmo Blade rises one level. This is why you hopefully raised your early blades to level A already. Trying to beat area 6 enemies with a weak Beam Blade is no fun. Anyhow, the Cosmo Blade will now be very strong. Explore the rest of 6-1 to learn two letters of the password. Go far right of the start and warp out when you're done. Go right, fly up, go right, fly up, and destroy the left wall at the top of the corridor with the Prism Wave. Go through and destroy the last computer. Go back down and backtrack to the right. Past the room with holes in the floor with the barrier room below, fly up the next vertical corridor. A warp hole will have appeared at the top. Explore 6-2 for the other two letters of the password. Go up, left, up, right, and pay 2000 CP for the first clue. Go back left, down, down, left, and answer No to get the other one. Then go right and exit. Head up to the top of the area again. Continue left and enter the password. Go left to fight Madius. There's only one path to follow in the final area. There are several places where enemies appear continually who drop HP and CP capsules. Go into the final battle with as close to full CP as you can manage. ------------------------------------ QUESTIONS WITH SPOILER ANSWERS ------------------------------------ ************************************ ************************************ ********** SPOILERS *********** ************************************ ************************************ Same questions as the other section, but no gentle hints this time, just plain solutions. What do I do with the Capsule Bomber in area 2? - Go to the room directly right of the long outside stretch at the start of the area. You'll have to circle around down, right, up, and left to reach it. It's a single-screen room with no enemies. Start throwing Capsule Bombers at the floor until you hit something. What do I do in area 3? - Go to the bottom of the first vertical corridor and hit the left wall 3 times with the Cosmo Boomerang. Where's the Cosmo Suit? - Go up and (carefully) cross the ocean. In the room at the end, don't go in the warp hole. Hit the right wall 3 times with the Cosmo Boomerang. OK, I've got the Cosmo Suit, but what do I do now? Where are the two walls I can destroy with the Spark Ball? - The first one is at the far left of the uppermost underwater area. Fall in from the islands above, go left, and hit the wall 3 times. - The second one is at the bottom of the newly accessible vertical corridor, directly left of the room where you got the Life Capsule. Where's the boss in area 4? - Go across the top of the ocean. Use the Earth Crystal on the large island in the middle to reveal a warp hole. What do I do with the Prism Wave? I found the wall I could destroy with the Prism Wave, but what do I do now? - There are two passages to open in that vertical corridor. One is directly right of the guy who gives you that hint about destroying a wall with the Prism Wave. The other as at the bottom of the corridor, again in the right wall. What now? Where's the new blade in area 5? - Find the Jet Boots and Cosmo Crystal. Left of the warp to 5-1, fly to the top of the corridor, through the damaging barrier, and use the Cosmo Crystal to explode the ceiling. What do I do in the hallway in 5-2 that just keeps repeating? - Leave. By the warp to 5-2, use the Earth Crystal three times to reveal three hidden warp holes. Enter the one on the lower right to go to 5-3 instead. I'm stuck in area 6. Where's the Cosmo Blade? - Find the hallway with damaging barriers on the ceiling. Shoot the far left wall 3 times with the Prism Wave. How do I find out the password? - After anyone who doesn't really want to read this answer stops reading I will tell you that mado is the password.
