INTRODUCTION G0100 =============================================================================== Welcome to 'Captain Silver' for the NES, released by Tokuma Shoten in 1988. This game is not the same as the Sega Master System or Arcade version, although it sounds there may some slight similarities between them. Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy! =============================================================================== 02.) OVERVIEW & CONTROLS G0200 =============================================================================== The game's main character is an adventurer named Jim Avery. He is in search of Captain's Silver secret treasure hidden on an island. Display: ```````` The top of the screen contains the important info through the stages. S represents the Score you gain from killing enemies and finding gold, used to buy things from the shop. T is the time you have left to finish the stage. You can alter this buy finding a clock. L is your life bar, that declines as you get hurt but can also be replenished. Finally, the number on the right is the lives left before the game is over. Next to it is the current power-up you are using as a weapon. If this is empty then you don't have one equipped right now. During a boss fight you cannot see this display anymore. The timer will have stopped anyway, but you have to remember the life bars you had left. Controls: ````````` D-Pad Walk, Duck A Jump B Attack START Menu, select power-ups and see how many lives you have left SELECT Pause/Unpause the game Shops: `````` Defeating enemies adds to your score which in turn can be used to buy certain power- ups. Stages 1 through 6 (sans 2) have a shop where you can spend all these points. The first shop's upgrades don't seem to last long, but after Stage 3 they will stay with you until the end of the game. Boomerang: 1000 points Adds a sonic boomerang to the attack. Fireball: 3000 points Adds a fireball to the attack. Mega Fireball:4000 points Adds an even better fireball to the attack. Thunderbolt: 4000 points Defeats everything onscreen, but you only get 10 hits. Works wonders for the Stage 5 boss. 1UP: 3000/4000 points Extra life, take it if you have the spare points. Dash: 2000 points ? Arrows: 2000 points ? Bottle: 1000/2000/3000 points Replenishes health. Items: `````` Clock: Stops time for a short while. Shoes: Enables Jim to jump higher and possible reach more items, enemies and even ledges. Knife: You turn green and I assume stronger attack is attained until you get hit. Might also render you immune against certain hazards. Heart: Replenishes a bit of health. =============================================================================== 03.) WALKTHROUGH G0300 =============================================================================== Stage 1: Town ````````````` You start out with 80 seconds to reach the shop. Kill the werewolves coming towards you as you go along the tree line. They will keep on coming so don't stand around waiting for the clear path. When the cats start appearing the wolves will be less frequent. Just before you reach the ladder the lanterns will drop down. Either kill or jump over them one by one. Werewolves will appear from the right but instead climb up the ladder and collect the shoes. Jump down at the end and kill any werewolves that are still lurking around. The Piper is next, kill him quickly before he spawns more rats. I found that staying on his right will make the rats stop for a while, giving you enough time to slay him. Move on and climb up the next ladder. Enter the chimney on this house and collect all the gold before time runs out. To do so, drop down on the left and do not climb down the ladder, then quickly climb up to the last few on the left side. Back outside, walk right and enter the shop. Buy the sonic boomerang and if you want, a 1UP. You now have 60 seconds for the rest of the stage. Jump on the edge of the fountain, careful not to jump in. Wait for the water to lower so you can jump from each stream to the next until you pass the fountain altogether. Kill the witches before you move on, as otherwise you will run into the lanterns and have hazards on both side. BOSS: Frankstein's Monster He might look frightful but all he does is leap back and forth. Stay at the edge and just attack. The sonic boom will help a lot as you can still damage him to further away. It may take away but he's a pretty pathetic boss. After defeating him, pick one of the treasure chests to get a big amount of gold, or nothing at all. Stage 2: Pirate Ship ```````````````````` You have 80 seconds to reach the ship's interiors. Kill the first pirate, grab the knife and start climbing the rope ladder. Kill the guy waiting here and continue your ascend. The top pirate is a little more tricky as he starts jumping as you nearly reach the top of the mast. If you time it right you can move out of the way and kill him, but it's not very easy. Go right and climb down the first ladder you see, then enter the lower decks. Another 10 seconds to grab all the gold. This one is even more tight than the previous stage. To get them all, quickly jump off the left side, then jump in the gap dead center. If you grabbed the one in the air and then quickly turned left, you have enough time to climb up on the right side to get the rest. Back outside, climb up and go all the way right while defeating the pirates. Leap off the right side and then kill the pirate while you stop time with the clock. Defeat the final pirate standing in the way of the lower decks. The clock says another 110 seconds to finish this stage, and it is most likely still stopped from a few moments ago, so use this time to get ahead. Ignore the barrel on the left. Climb along the short ladders on the right but instead of meeting the pirate underneath go along the left and up again. Continue going left, you can ignore most barrels. There is a clock further up but it has little significance, the one below has a knife if you want to get it. If you continue straight left you will fall through the floor and battle it you with the huge pirate anyway. There is then a chance he will knife you from behind so facing him straight on might be better after collecting the knife. Follow the ladders up on the far left, defeat another huge pirate and then enter the door at the top. BOSS: Pirate Captain For this we stay on the left side again but also duck. Count his fireball attacks. After the third, jump straight up with your sword drawn. You will hit him and take no damage yourself. Once in a while the Captain will start firing from further away which will end up with a total of four fireballs in a run, in this case do not attempt to jump as the fourth one will hit you. Just watch out for his movements while you crouch. After roughly twenty hits he will die. Pick another treasure chest for a possible bonus. Stage 3: Ocean Cave ``````````````````` It is important to note that even though you are confined to you little lifeboat, you may still move around in the center of the screen. The first part is at sea. Defeat the regular attack of the seagull/shark combination. It helps if you move around but the seagulls are still tricky to defeat before the strike. Soon you find the shop. I purchase a fireball attack here but I guess it is not really necessary but you keep it for the other stages which is great. The rest of the stage takes part in the cave. There are branches you can visit, some of them empty and some of them have a crazy guy giving you some sort of advice. I don't think it's important. The armadillos here can be taken out with ease if you duck and wait for them to roll into your sword. If you purchased the fireball at the shop then it's even easier. The aliens here should not make any trouble either. When you reach the far right side of the cave... BOSS: Squid Again, I have the fireball attack but I think it is still easy without. First fire dead ahead to remove the lower tentacle. Then start jumping to get rid of the second. Without a fireball you may need to stand closer to where the extended tentacle reaches. Finally it will also lose this one. Now stand right in front of it but don't actually get hurt by walking into the squid. Jump and attack with your sword to damage it. The squid will go down quicker than any of the previous bosses. Stage 4: Jungle ``````````````` You actually keep your power-ups from now on so that will help a lot. This is similar to Stage 1 where the crabs keep on coming and instead of the lanterns you have coconuts dropping down. There are also a few natives in the way. Continue on until you arrive in the village, but don't forget to take the boots on the way. Soon you will arrive at the shop. The time doesn't stop here yet so be quick to enter the cave. The rest of the stage must be done within 60 seconds. Inside the cave, be wary of the ghosts. When you reach the next part there are some metal enemies to take care of which are much easier. Grab the boots at the top but be careful not to start climbing down as you fight the foe here, don't try to duck when you stand on a ladder. Slowly advance, dodging the spears coming from inside the wall. Stay at the top and jump over the gap and then the lava ones, too. BOSS: Statue Dodge his body, he actually hurts you even though you do not flash white. And his range seems quite far. Also watch out for his knife throwing, there is plenty of room to maneuver between them but sometimes you are just unlucky to stand right where he is throwing. Watch his position where he stops and position yourself accordingly. He may even lower his body after throwing so don't stand nearby. With a fireball attack you can attack him while in the air. Otherwise it will take a bit longer waiting for the chance to slash him close- by. Around 20 hits will do it. Stage 5: Cave ````````````` The 110 timer starts as you begin, although this is a relatively short stage. The first few steps are easy, take out all enemies in the way. Soon you reach a waterfall. This not only makes you kind of dizzy to look at, but also triggers plenty of enemies. First you get the flying fish jumping at you, then every few steps a log will crash down from above. Take it slowly unless you feel you can step back very quickly. After a short while a Venus Fly Trap shoots at you from above. Carefully take it out while also watching out for two fish. Continue until the area changes to moving platforms. Ignore the smaller caves and just go right until you arrive at the shop. Buy the thunder bolts or else you face a really tough boss battle, which happens to be just a few meters to the right. BOSS: Big Face The trick is to not hurt the face itself but his rock balls it spews out of the mouth opening. Equip the thunderbolts and wait until he has let go three balls. Kill them with a flash. Continue doing this for another nine times and then destroy a few more with your sword. He should be dead soon as the thunderbolts took care of most of the damage. Stage 6: Forest ``````````````` The bees are quite tough, you better take them out quickly before they reach you as they will stick to you like honey. The spiders are also annoying as they appear at the same time. You are most likely getting some damage from this part but there are quite a few hearts being dropped. Kill the panther and then repeat the bee/spider maneuver until reaching the river. Dodge the piranhas, they tend to drop hearts often so if you are desperate this might be a chance to fill up some life bars. There are only three and they do not regenerate. Continuing onwards, when you see a spider advance slowly wait for the panther to appear first. Kill it, then the spider by jumping over its projectiles. Soon you find a clock, but careful of the piranha that will jump in from the right as you reach the ladder. Climb up and swing across the ropes. It is actually quite straightforward but still awkward to pull off. All you have to do is wait for Jim to grab the rope himself by jumping into it, then when he swung to the other side, jump again to reach the next one. You will land on the small island below, and then need to use the tortoises to reach the land on the right. Be wary of some piranhas here. Soon you reach a shop, buy everything you need as this is the last chance to do so. Grab the pill bottle if you need it and perhaps a 1UP with any points you have left. The scenery changes to a more wide open land. You have 50 seconds to complete this part. Take care of any skeletons foolish enough to stand in your way. You have lots of time so you may want to advance slowly and not risk taking damage from them suddenly popping out of the ground. You will need all the health you can get soon. When you reach the big skeleton... BOSS: Captain Silver Not as tough as he looks. He teleports around, shooting a bunch of small fireballs around. Power-up weapons don't seem to help out here, but instead jump up next to him and slash his arm. You have to be fairly close but if you jump directly into him then you get hurt. Basically this all comes down to how well you position yourself when he appears and manage to dodge his fire attack. Ducking helps a bit. After around 15 to 20 hits he will already be deader than dead. The gold is all yours. THE END =============================================================================== 04.) ENEMIES G0400 =============================================================================== Werewolf: Stage 1 200 points The first foes you encounter, and pretty straightfoward too. Take them out but they reappear from the right until you move on ahead. Cheshire Cat: Stage 1 100 points Drop down from trees and then start jumping toward you. I noticed they may disappear after a while if you ignore them, but you may as well kill them if you are nearby. Jack-o-Lanterns: Stage 1 100 points Wait and drop down from above until you walk below, avoid by luring them down and then either killing or jumping over them. The Pied Piper (of Hamelin): Stage 1 - points Shortly after the start of the first stage you will see him at the marketplace. Like the character in the German folktale, he enchants the rats by playing a magical flute so killing him is a top priority as they will continue to come if you simply pass him by. Rat: Stage 1 100 points They are only around the Pied Piper, and stop coming once he is dead. Witch: Stage 1 200 points They fly around towards the end of Stage 1, jump up and kill them before they cause too much damage. Drop Jack-o-Lanterns. Bat: Stage 1 Near the end of Stage 1, come in a bunch. They fly diagonal lines so watch for their movements. Backing off might make them fly directly into your attack range. Blue Pirate: Stage 2 100 points Knife-throwers. Sometimes like to jump around too. Green Pirate: Stage 2 200 points Owner of a gun, but usually jump up and fire above you head first so there is enough time to move in for the kill. Huge Pirate: Stage 2 100 points Nearly double your size, but only has a tiny knife to throw. These knifes can be smashed with your sword so slowly move in for the kill. Ghost Fish: Stage 2 100 points Like to hide in chests. Watch their movements and they can easily be avoided. Kind of like the Medusa Heads in several other video games. Seagull: Stage 3 100 points Zones in when you get close, doesn't actually die but flies away when hit. Shark: Stage 3 100 points Spew out some skeleton heads. Armadillo: Stage 3 100 points I know it's not an armadillo, but it certainly behaves like one. Simply duck and attack while it rolls into your lethal sword. A fireball will even take it out before it gets that chance. Alien: Stage 3 200 points Lurks around in the cave near the end. Nothing special about it. Crab: Stage 4 200 points Slowly walk towards you, crouch attack to get rid of them. Coconut: Stage 4 100 points Similar to the lanterns, drop down from the palm trees and vanish. Natives: Stage 4 100 points There are two kinds, one with a shield and spear and one with bow and arrow. They both require a few hits to defeat but they aren't too much of a threat. Ghost: Stage 4 100 points They have an annoying attack with several flames at the same time. There are strategies to avoid getting hurt. One is if they are too high, then duck the first attack and stab it in the back. If it is your height then jump over the first two flames and hit it in the air. It is much harder to do in reality though. Metal Shrimp: Stage 4 100 points That's sure how they look like, sort of. It seems to be this level's easy prey because they can be defeated without breaking a sweat. Scorpion: Stage 5 100 points Similar to the crab, but much faster and a little tougher to kill. Eagle: Stage 5 100 points Slow fliers, easy to take out. They even fly on your sword height, a fireball makes this even easier. Flying Fish: Stage 5 100 points Jump out of the water from both sides. Dodge or defeat, the latter is better as then they won't bother you again. Venus Fly Trap: Stage 5 100 points They are sometimes in tough places to reach them, and it matters because the continue to fire at you from there. There are only two in the game if I'm not mistaken. Bee: Stage 6 400 points Quite quick in the air and don't let go if you try and dodge. Kill them from a distance with a fireball to make this less painful in the long run. One of the more annoying enemies in the game. Spider: Stage 6 100 points They lower from the tree when you get close, then fire two small projectiles at a 45 degree angle. There are only a few but the hazard comes from them not being the only foe around at that time. Panther: Stage 6 100 points Pretty tough, takes a few hits to defeat. Jumps from one side to the other. Duck and fire into one direction, you will not be harmed and it will die in a few shots. There are only two of these. Piranha: Stage 6 - In the river, drops hearts but doesn't yield points. They are fast little buggers but at least they don't appear too often. Skeleton: Stage 6 500 points Pop out from the ground, you can see the skull beforehand though. They only appear towards the very end of the game. You have plenty of time to advance slowly and wait for them to pop out. =============================================================================== YY.) MINI-REVIEW GYY00 =============================================================================== This isn't meant to be a full review, just a few notes about the game's pros and cons as well as other things worth mentioning. Gameplay: 2/10 The controls are really shoddy. Some graphic glitches kill you too. Jumping is awkward, air attacks are hard to pull off and this all makes the game more difficult than it should be. Graphics: 3/10 Ugly for the most part. Bad characters, enemies, even bosses. It's quite an old game, but that is no real excuse. Sound: 4/10 A few pirate themes here and there safe this from being really crap too. Overall: 3/10 Very bad platformer. Short too. I've seen worse but I still can't recommend this to anyone. I suppose it's interesting how they add lots of mythical things into a game, such as the Pied Piper and even Frankenstein's Monster. =============================================================================== ZZ.)
