This guide will provide you with game basics and a general walkthrough from beginning to end. This is part of the NES Completion Project at the FAQ Contributor Board at GameFAQs, with the aim of giving every NES game a full FAQ. If you are interested or want to contribute, then check out the site here - http://faqs.retronintendo.com/ I took up this project on 22nd December 2005, and it's finally finished on the 5th August 2007, a good 18 months or so later. Thanks to the guys who run the project in being very patient in allowing me such a ridicious amount of time to get this rather short game finished, and adaml in giving me a bit of motivation (telling me how long the damn game is). VERSION HISTORY ---------------------- =============================================================================== +--------------------------+ | Version 1.0 - 05/08/2007 | +--------------------------+ The first version of the FAQ, everything is complete! =============================================================================== -------------------- 2. GAME OVERVIEW -------------------- =============================================================================== This section provides an overhow of how the game plays and controls. -------- Controls -------- D-Pad - Move Character A - Jump B - Throw Coin / Swing Bat START - Pause SELECT - Change Character B + Down - Swing / Throw downward A and B - High Jump ------ Basics ------ This is a standard platforming game, where the aim is to reach the end of the level. There are four levels in each world, with a boss at the end of each. You get to control one of two characters, each with a different attack. Once throws coins (projectiles) and the other swings a bat. To change between the two, jump and press the SELECT button. Note that you can only change when you have enough life segments. Life segments appear on the left, and must have at least two to change. Touching enemies means you lose some (depending on how long you stay in contact with the enemy) and killing them gains segments. Clearing a boss boosts it back up to five. Lose all the segments and you must resume the level from the beginning. Most enemies can be bypassed in the game. There are also environmental factors such as wires (just hold left or right to swing across), vines (up and down to climb) and sand and water (the former slows you down, the latter kills you). You get a set amount of time to clear each stage, only a few minutes, so be hasty! Most of the end bosses are Dragon Heads - the basic way of killing these guys is to use the projectile throwing character, stay at a distance and throw them down. Jump now and again also. This means the projectiles hit the ground and into the dragon head, or when jumping, at the head directly. However certain environmental factors on some stages mean this tactic doesn't work, in which case, consult the boss in the walkthrough. =============================================================================== ------------------ 3. WALKTHROUGH ------------------ =============================================================================== ----------------- 3.01. - World One ----------------- Time Race (Time to Complete - 2:30) ----------------------------------- Progress right and jump on to the red blocks; green bats will appear, which will either progress toward you or head upward. You can take them out by throwing coins, or you can avoid them all together. Continue past the gray blocks and another bat, and when you reach the next green warehouse be prepared to jump the motorcyclist. Keep going until you reach a column with a pit before it; stand by the pit edge and throw coins at any green bats that come toward you, then jump through the column (keep pressing right to avoid falling down). Head over the red blocks and over the next pit to reach a white building, with two gaps (that look like pipes) and a blue man. Wait until the blue man falls down the hole and progress to the stone steps, where rocks will fall down. Wait until they bounce high and head past. Over the steps, jump over the running man and then onward to the finish. In the next screen, continue to the finishing cabin. Bamboo Groove (Time to Complete - 2:30) --------------------------------------- Go right and take out the tribesman on the upper platform with a well placed jumping throw of a coin. Head onto the platform he was on and continue along the top platforms, then jump across onto the vine. Continue along the top vines and ladders here, avoiding any green blobs. When you reach three stone blocks, headbutt them from underneath to receive two hearts. Drop down onto the lower platform then a running jump over the tall stone column. Descend down the ladder, right, and wait until the rocks are at the ground where they should start bouncing high, allowing you to progress over the triangle rock formation. In this next section, jump onto the platforms above as soon as possible to avoid the speeding car that comes along the ground. Jump down, past another bouncing rock and jump over the two gaps. Wait here again until the bouncing rock becomes high enough to get past, then head right up the stone block steps, jump on to the left ledge, right and fall, jump over the column, and right. You will then reach two ape-men, which will wonder around if you leave them a second. Wait until they are both on the ground (especially the top one) then head up the top platform and jump right and over. Jump over the two men, up the ladder, across one of the two rope pulleys and off the other side to finish. Dim Base (Time to Complete - 2:30) ---------------------------------- Step back and throw coins at the rocks above the pit to destroy them, then jump over the pit. Walk on until you drop down, where a car will come from the right. Jump back up the left ledge until it returns to the right, and follow it until you are past the column so you jump over and continue. Progress until you reach two stone columns, the second of which has a man on. You have to jump over this guy and down the other side, so time your run and jump just right. Run and jump right over the water to the upper ledge, and then up into between the two stone lines and run and jump up to the next stone line (a tricky jump). Drop down, and move right a little so that the bear appears on the upper ledge. Pummel him with coins until he dies, then jump on to the next ledge. Drop down to the brown earth below and jump and throw coins at the above bear. Once he's dead, head up the ledge, grab the two right hearts above, then continue right. After the middle ledge area two men will advance toward you, which you can either avoid or better still pummel with coins. Continue right to finish. Darkness Cave (Time to Complete - 3:00) --------------------------------------- More tricky jumps in this stage. Jump up into the upper ledge, then hold right as jump to the above ledge, and drop down and hold right to fit into the side ledge. The next section of ledges look like a backward E; here jump opposite, then jump left and at the height of your jump hold right to land on the above ledge. Do that again to reach the top most ledge, allowing you to drop down below. Green birds will advance toward you; throw coins toward them, then jump on to the next ledge to lure more. Jump back down below and take these out before progressing. Jump through the next ledges, up the steps, down the other side then jump and hold up the grab the chain. At the top, wait until the Mummy is on the right then drop down and attack him with coins until he's destroyed then head up the next ledge. Do the same again for the next Mummy (or just jump over the pit he is in) where you'll reach a section of ledges like those of the beginning including the backward E shaped ones. Drop down the face the boss. Boss - Green Dragon Head Hmm, quite tough! When you drop down, stand under the second chain from the left and he'll reach just in front of you. He'll follow your movements, so jump up and down and the head will follow suit. Keep throwing coins at him and jumping so his projectiles will (hopefully) miss you and keep going until he is destroyed. The best method I found was the stand near the left wall and jump up and down constantly and in midair fire coins down on him. It takes a little longer but I've managed to keep all my lives this way. Or, you could try and hit his projectiles back at him by using a bat or coins, which might work a bit quicker (you need a fast trigger finger to pull it off though). Otherwise if you have five full life segments, then you can run into him and destroy him instantly. ------------- 3.02. World 2 ------------- Time Race (Time to Complete - 2:30) ----------------------------------- Jump the advancing man (watch out, he can fire projectiles at you) and head right, up and left above and then out up and right. Jump over the two men then to the brown blocks. Drop down to the single block, step right then jump right and up to the upper ledge. Take out the bats and head through the red columns. Progress over the stone blocks to a sandy area; here the sand means you cannot walk onward, only jump to get yourself. There is a man walking on the sand, so try and follow him right and take him out from behind. Keep going right until you exit the sand, and jump over the motorcyclist. Jump right and hold up to grab the vine; head up the top and right on to the ropes. Take out the bat that is coming with coins, then go right off the edge to land on the ropes below. Go right again and drop off on to the blocks, go right, take out the man (or jump over) and up the stone steps to the finish. Dim Base (Time to Complete - 2:30) ---------------------------------- Step back and throw coins at the rocks above the pit to destroy them, then jump over the pit. Head right and jump over the cars when there is a gap above you; note that on the longer block sets that dangle down, you can destroy the upper blocks to get hearts. At the far end use the vines to go over the platforms all the way to the far end. Jump up and right past the lake section, where the bear below will walk toward you. Wait a second until he is under the platform below, then progress onward. At the stone block steps, wait until the bouncing rock is close by and through under the platform so you can get past or take out with coins. There is another at the top (so use the same tactic here) and you'll reach a waterfall. Now this jump is VERY VERY tough to make; you have to get down the bottom passage. You have to land on the bottom, not slide down the right and then fall in to it, so you have to jump up, fall and get it JUST RIGHT to land. If you are playing this on an emulator, make a save state before and keep doing it until you get it right. When you make it, make your way up the ladder and drop down the right and run across this runway as the blocks will disappear. Be prepared to jump over the oncoming car, and to take out the bear in a second. Like at the start there are hearts hidden in the above block overhangs, and that's it for this stage! Rocky Mountain (Time to Complete - 2:00) ---------------------------------------- This stage sees you heading upward instead of progressing horizontally. Note that the screen shifts upward as you go, and if you fall you lose a life and have to start over again. Do a long running jump to the right ledge, then head up and left so the screen shifts up. Jump up and climb the ladder, up the blocks, up another screen and jump and climb another ladder. The next screen, jump on to the single block, then to the double and then the triple, right, and up on to the L shaped piece. Now the screen will scroll up again; jump on to the top of the L, then just hold left to run down the blocks and stop on the end. Jump on to the single blocks above and make your way right to the ladder. At the top go left, across the gap, drop down (hold left), up and hold left to the left above, and up the left ledge where the screen will scroll. Two routes here; you can jump up and just about grab on to the left ladder and head straight to the finish, or make your way up the right side. Either way you'll reach the finish within a matter of screens. Deadly Cloud (Time to Complete - 3:00) -------------------------------------- Head right and take out the shaded man. Continue and you'll encounter birds, bees, more birds and a man; I would take out all of them bar the end man, which you should jump over. Use these enemies either way as a way of building up life segments, as after you'll face... Boss - Blue Dragon Head Like the last boss, this is rather tough. However you cannot quite get up close and personal due to a gap in the way, so the jumping and coin throwing method might not work. So the best way is to try and hit his projectiles back at him by using a bat or coins but you need a fast trigger finger to pull it off. Otherwise if you have five full life segments, then you can run into him and destroy him instantly. Also note that sometimes when I tried this boss I got attacked by a projectile coming from the left straight away, so watch out for this. ----------------- 3.03. World Three ----------------- Title Race (Time to Complete - 2:30) ------------------------------------ Head right and over the three red block column down on to the single block. Drop down right and hold jump and right to land on to the next ledge. Continue and take out the woman from afar and watch out for the three flies after. Continue to reach water; jump on to and climb up the vine and head right over the overhead ropes. Go off the end to the ropes below, then drop down at the end on to the underwater block, and jump up and right across the block platforms, sticking to the top. Remember to hold right as you slot on to the next platform; if you fall then try and land on one of the lower blocks, and jump back on to the above ledges. At the end drop down on to land and take out the shaded man before he gets a hit in. Just onward are sets of columns with hearts in; the blocks just below each heart block can be destroyed, so make your way across the top, destroying the next few blocks in the column, then jump in to that column, etc until you reach the other side. Here is another body of water, where you must perform a running jump on to the next stone block; you'll have to jump RIGHT at the last moment to make it. Quickly progress over the next two stone blocks while avoiding the on coming bats. Back on land, go under the horizontal log and take out the man coming from the right whilst in the ditch to avoid his fire, then continue up the stone block hill to finish. Death Ruins (Time to Complete - 2:00) ------------------------------------- Head right and jump over the first gap. Watch out for the jumping fish around this area; try and avoid them as best as you can and if you must, attack them. To get over the second gap you must get on to the blocks above. Use the high jump (run and jump and hold both A and B together) to reach on to the single block above. Progress over the gap to the red land below - watch out for the jumping fish, then high jump up to the single block again and over the gap to the four blocks. Fish will come from below and fire projectiles; staying on this platform will block them, so wait until they are finished then jump right and keep running over the collapsing walkway to the far end. Note that on this walkway and on the blocks coming you *may* meet some walking guys; if so jump the one on the walkway and at the end, drop down on to the single block right on the edge to make one appear on the right. When he turns back, jump across and jump the rest and head to the vine and straight over the coming blocks until you reach a wall. Change character and fire coins to destroy the wall allowing you to progress. Do the same on the wall after (the destroyable blocks are slightly higher) and then head through the block columns. Go over the block path to the red land, and be prepared to jump the projectile from a fish. Now simply jump right to finish. Bamboo Drove (Time to Complete - 2:30) -------------------------------------- Walk right and on to the stone blocks, and jump low over the monkey pit. Next up is sludge, so try and jump straight to the blocks then attack the bald man on the upper platform. Jump over the tall column, down the ladder and attack the tribesman when is back is turned (with the bat - if you need to change, climb the ladder again and do so there). Jump on to the log and up the red blocks and down, holding left as you descend to land on the single block below. Taking out the tribesman here is quite tough however if you just have the bat (with a coin just hold down while firing against the left wall) so try and walk across and bat like crazy and you might kill him, otherwise you may have to just walk in to him and risk a few life points on him. Progress, avoid the tribesman and go across the stone blocks, and head right staying on the top of the platforms. When you reach the ladder, try and jump straight to the top with a high jump from the block to the left otherwise just climb it and avoid the monkeys. Use the rope to go right and drop down the end and quickly jump on the platform to avoid the Indian's projectile. Go right to another red column area with a tribesman at the bottom; again if you have a coin fire it down and against the left wall to destroy him, other wise kamikaze with the bat. Continue to some platforms and take out the upper tribesman with a coin, and jump right to dry land - however be prepared to jump the speeding car! Climb the ladder and across on the upper rope to the finish. Darkness Cave (Time to Complete - 2:30) --------------------------------------- Remember this ledge system from the last Darkness Cave? Do the same here to get through - the backward E requires you to jump opposite, then jump left and at the height of your jump hold right to land on the above ledge. Jump over the top of the screen on to the column (sneaky, eh?) and JUMP to the left of the mummy and over. High jumping makes you appear out of the water below for some reason, so just do a normal jump here. Anyway, head up and over and jump and hold up for the chain. Wait midway for the bats to fly off, then jump down and take them out. After another two three chain sections like this, you'll meet a mummy at the top. Take him out with coin shots off the chain or step out when he's on the right and jump over and down. After this is the boss battle. Boss - Green Dragon Head Same as before... keep your distance, throw coins down and keep jumping. As long as you have a few lives in tow, you should be alright. ------------- 3.04. World 4 ------------- Time Race (Time to Complete - 2:00) ----------------------------------- Walk right and approach the log, but don't jump up. Wait until the guy appears and take him out, then move over the logs and tires and jump over the motor- cyclist. When it comes to the wall, wait until the flies to disappear then jump through it. Scale the blocks, over the two gaps and jump onto the vine overhead. Do not go straight on to the top, but onto the block, causing the fly to appear so you can climb back down to avoid him. Go across now, drop down to the rope below and off the end onto the underwater block. Jump up, then drop down to the single light gray block below, and up and right on to the four block just to the right. Stay along the top and progress right over the two stone hills, timing it right to get past the bouncing balls. After the second hill jump across to the upmost log platform and go to the end across the top of these platforms to the finish. Rocky Mountain (Time to Complete - 1:30) ---------------------------------------- Jump across the gap, up the ladder and up several screens via the single block platforms until you are forced to jump right. Jump on the single block here to scroll the screen up, scale the overhead ladder, ignore the right path and straight up on the left side until you reach the sky. At the dark sky blocks, to progress get on top the backward L on the left side and jump out left and back right to get above. Do the same again on the next screen, and at the ladder jump left and hold up to be sure to grab on. Climb the short distance up and finish. Death Ruins (Time to Complete - 2:30) ------------------------------------- Jump on top of the first platform and wait for the man's back to be turned before dropping down and projectiling him to death. Head up and right, over the columns to two paths onward. Take the lower as that has fewer enemies, which need to be projectiled to advance. At the end you'll come to a column that looks like this - BBB BBB B B ------BB B * - Stand here B B - Block B P - Hidden POW Block * B I - Pass through block -----BBB P B I B I B B Stand at where * is, and throw a coin down so it hits the P block, making it a POW block. Now jump into the upper wall and hold right, sliding down so you hit the POW block, destroy it and land on the bottom block (the two inbetween this and the POW block are pass through blocks. Jump onto the next platform to another wall. Just jump as high as you can to go through two invisible blocks toward the top, then drop down onto the next column. Head over the columns, take the upper bridge and then across a set of vines (climb to the top of the first and leap across, climb up to the top and leap across etc). At the other side get all the heart blocks then stand at the end until the flying enemies disappear. The rest is pretty simple; just a few columns and floating standard blocks and reach the end of the screen to finish. Deadly Cloud (Time to Complete - 2:30) -------------------------------------- Run right and leap over the two enemies. A set of birds in a right orientated diagonal line will approach, which you can either projectile through or leap over the bottom two set of birds. After another enemy leap the gap in the cloud, you'll come across another set of birds then the boss. Boss - Blue Dragon Head As soon as you see him, a projectile will approach from behind to leap it then run to the far left of the screen and remain here. Jump and dodge his initial projectiles and throw coins down so they bounce off the cloud and up. Keep doing this and a few should connect. Leap if you need to dodge, and throw coins down so they will hit his head also. Keep going until he is toast - leap the gap and finish. ------------- 3.05. World 5 ------------- Time Race (Time to Complete - 2:00) ----------------------------------- Run right and wait for the enemy to drop down right, then make a small jump through the gap and across the columns. Leap over the enemies and on to the rock formation, and as you drop down into the sand throw a few coins up to clear the above enemies. Wade through the sand under the platforms until you come to a rock face. Go under the platform and bat / projectile a path through it doing diagonally upward. Jump over through the path of heart blocks then down again. Kill the enemy in the column, go through, over another enemy and up the rock stairs. Go across the ground until you are forced to take a left back up the platform, onto the top, over the enemy and get some more heart blocks on the upper route, then go to the right edge to finish. Bamboo Grove (Time to Complete - 2:00) -------------------------------------- Go right and on the last lower platform take a small leap over the sand and land on the log to avoid the projectiles of the upper enemy. Kill the enemy to the right and continue across. Wait for the rocks to bounce over you when they come over the rock triangle and pass underneath them. Now travel across the ground through to the vines section, and ignore them and continue across the bottom. Go up the ladder when you must and go across the upper wire and drop down at the end. Wait for the rock to bounce higher and higher and then go underneath and through the rock formation. At the platforms go through the middle to avoid the enemies above and below, then across the top to another ladder and wires section, which leads straight onto the finish. Dim Base (Time to Complete - 2:00) ---------------------------------- Smash the rocks overhead so you can leap over the gap, jump the car and continue along the passage until you reach an open area. Wait for the rocks to bounce high enough to pass underneath them and climb the rock stairs. High jump (A and B together) over the waterfall then when you leap off this edge shoot projectiles to hopefully hit the enemies on the vines. Make your way across, kill the end enemy and jump on the rock and leap up (if you leap through the vine it'll slow you down and you'll fall). You'll come to some ladders now and a thick wall section - I BBBBBBBB I BBBBBBBB I BBBBBPBB I oooooooo I oooooooo IIBoBBBBBB I - Ladder IIBoBBBBBB B - Block IBoooooBB 0 - Destroyable block IBoooooBB P - POW block IBBBBBoBB I B I B IBBBBBBBB Stand on the top of the right most ladder and blast your way straight through, otherwise from the bottom go to the second block from the end, go left up and right to the other side. Leap over the columns to avoid the enemies, and go right to a body of water. Jump up and climb the vine, then go right across the upper wire. Keep going and at the end hold right to bounce off the lower wire and to the ground. Kill the landed fish under the rocks, and continue to the end. Deadly Cloud (Time to Complete - 2:30) -------------------------------------- Go right and leap over an enemy, two projectile enemies (you may want to kill them however if you want to avoid the chance of getting projectile'd) and another standard enemy. Continue right to face the same boss from the end of the last world. Boss - Blue Dragon Head Part One Run to the far left of the screen and remain here. Jump and dodge his initial projectiles and throw coins down so they bounce off the cloud and up. Keep doing this and a few should connect. Leap if you need to dodge, and throw coins down so they will hit his head also. Keep going until he is done for. Go right, over the gap and up the slope. Boss - Blue Dragon Head Part Two There is a very safe way to take this boss down. There are two flat ledges either side of the gap. Stay on the left side of the left gap and fire coins down. The head will follow the same pattern of rubbing against the left wall, rearing up slowly, then backing away, then rubbing against the left wall again. Stand on the left side and fire coins down as he cannot hit you. When he rears up and starts to back away you are in shooting range of him, so drop down the left and wait for him to start rubbing again. Takes a short while, but you can do it without taking any health using this method. ------------- 3.06. World 6 ------------- Time Race (Time to Complete - 2:00) ----------------------------------- Leap the enemy then make your way through the rock formation with the enemy inside. Continue right and leap the first of the two wheels, and go under the second, then quickly over the wheel on the rock stairs. Drop down onto the solid grey blocks and snipe the bat through the blocks ahead, then go through and drop down to the second single block. Jump back up (jump out left then back in right) and across to the wire. Go across, drop down to the bottom one then drop down onto the block at the end of the body of water. Jump across the gap and over the enemy to the next set of rock stairs. At the top, drop down and go left to get 9 heart blocks; there also move above and in the rock formation to the right. Use the shell of the right formation to get back on top, then high jump (A and B) over to the single block over to the right. Go across the others, shooting the bats as you go then across the ground through the sand. Jump when you need to, kill the enemy on the right then continue to the end. Dim Base (Time to Complete - 2:00) ---------------------------------- Shoot the blocks over the gap, then jump over and down the passage. Leap the car and the slow rolling rock until you come out to an open area. Leap across the water and shoot the enemy quickly before he gets you, and head across to the body of water. Take the vines across, go through the heart blocks and land on the single block above the water. Now jump across right and run across the blocks quickly as they disappear. On dry ground, leap the enemies in-between the columns, then through a few more and drop down to the lower level. Approach the enemies as you go right and projectile down at them to kill them. Head up the rock steps then across the wire, drop down onto the platform and leap and hang on the vine, then drop down to the ground right. Now just continue right to the end. Deadly Cloud (Time to Complete - 2:30) -------------------------------------- Jump the enemy, past the birds, another normal enemy and a projectiler to the gap where the first boss is. Boss - Blue Dragon Head Part One Same as the past two worlds - stand on the far left side and fire projectiles down at the cloud to they bounce him and hit the head, or jump up and shoot down to hit him directly. You'll have more than enough time to dodge projectiles. Leap the gap and pass more enemies to the next part of the boss. Boss - Blue Dragon Head Part Two Stand on the lower of the left ridges, where you'll be covered from the bosses' projectiles. Leap up and let rip to get at him, then cover and repeat. Darkness Cave (Time to Complete - 3:00) --------------------------------------- Head through the columns and leap out left and up that backwards E formation in the rock. Drop down, go right and grap the chain and go up, and shoot the enemy floating around on the right. Drop down and jump up the columns then drop down into the area. Boss - Green Dragon Head Like the other bosses previously, stand on the far left and rain projectiles down, either standing or jumping until he's a goner. Head through the columns to the pit where the two Zombies are. High jump (A and B together) and hold right to avoid going down there and continue along the columns, to another boss pit. Boss - Green Dragon Head Like the other bosses previously, stand on the far left and rain projectiles down, either standing or jumping until he's a goner. You'll face the exact same formation of columns once more, except with bats. Try and hit them with projectiles if you can, otherwise just try and avoid them and reach the next boss pit. Boss - Green Dragon Head Like the other bosses previously, stand on the far left and rain projectiles down, either standing or jumping until he's a goner. Head right now to finish... or will you? Boss - Final Boss This is a guy twice your size and width, and fires projectiles at you. Use the same tactics as always - stay on the left and fire away. He is a bit closer than the standard dragon heads however his projectiles are pretty slow and thus easy to avoid. Hammer away at him until he dies then go right to finish the game. Congratulations and enjoy the ending! =============================================================================== ------------------------------------ 4.
