Welcome to my FAQ about the classic game, B-Wings for the NES. If you recall correctly, I said something about this in my Prince Of Persia FAQ... As the game consists of 30 levels, and all of them look alike somehow, I'm not going to explain each and every level. Instead, I'm going to tell you about everything you will meet along the way. (I'll guide you through a level wherever possible.) I have had this game for more than 13 years (I got my NES when I was 4), and this has grown to be one of my all-time favourites. This was my first ever shoot-em'-up game, in fact! On the other hand, this game is just plain weird. I mean, whoever heard of frying pans and toy aeroplanes as enemies, and a frog (among other things) for a boss? Really strange. The background music is great; it's also one of the best BGMs in a NES game in my opinion - it brings back fond memories of me growing up alongside my cousins... I love this game. Before I finish this section up, I'd like to say that Data East has gone bankrupt. A few months after I started on this, I heard of the bad news - I will miss your games severely; you'll always have a loyal fan in me, and I will always support you guys. Goodbye, DECO... I'll miss you. As usual, if you have any comments, anything about the game or FAQ, do contact me at ztwc2@doramail.com +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ GAME INTRODUCTION +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ In the year 1984, a game called B-Wings was out in the local arcades. Perhaps the predecessor to the 19XX series, (1942, 1943, etc) this was one of the first solo aeroplane games ever. As far as I know, there was no storyline whatsoever available. (For the record, I was born in 1986.) Very detailed for its time, it consisted of a wide array of weapons, power-ups, and secrets. The game itself was tough; There were, simply put, just too many levels (30, to be accurate) and heaven knows how many credits you had to force down the machine to actually finish the game. In 1986, the NES version came out, saving many gamers from bankruptcy, and which I own. It brought the same amount of weapons, power-ups and graphics right into your home! Of course, the graphics of the NES version were lame, when compared to the arcade version, but the gameplay remained the same... It also had a primitive logic engine, which didn't work particularly well, and you could see your plane blown up in pieces when an enemy projectile came close, but didn't touch you, and which probably contributed to the lag effect, on which I will explain more later. Still, it remains a classic, and is very rare nowadays. So here's what: Take out your NES, blow the dust off it, and give this game a shot. Move a step back in time, and feel how it was like to be a gamer of yester-decade. +=+=+=+=+=+ LEGAL INFO +=+=+=+=+=+ As with all FAQs, this section must be included to avoid any legal complications. ___________________________________________________________________ This FAQ is written by Eizaz and is copyright ©Eizaz Azhar, 2003. Sorry, but it had to be said. BTW, does anyone actually read this crap? +=+=+=+=+=+ THE STORY! +=+=+=+=+=+ Remember about what I said being there not being a story? Exactly. I am making this up from start to finish. If anyone has the TRUE story, please, please contact me and I will give credits to you. I'll keep on searching for the original story (if there is one), and if I find it, I'll put it here. Ready? Okay.. Here goes. You are the pilot of an experimental plane called the FX-1. Something terribly wrong has happened in cyberspace, caused by a single virus. Your mission: Enter cyberspace, and terminate the virus as soon as possible, via the FX-1. The future of technology now lies in your hands... +=+=+=+=+=+=+ THE CONTROLS! +=+=+=+=+=+=+ Here are the controls for the game. Note that you can move diagonally! Up button on the D-Pad........... Moves the FX-1 up Down button on the D-Pad......... Moves the FX-1 down Left button on the D-Pad......... Moves the FX-1 left Right button on the D-Pad........ Moves the FX-1 right. A button........... Fires a shot. Press rapidly for rapid fire B button........... Releases your wings. Use this to change your current weapon. Start button....... Pauses the game/Starts the game Select button...... Morph Wing (I'll explain later.) Unlike your ordinary shooter, you can move infinitely to the side. Move sideways for a certain distance and the entire surrounding will come back to you again, like a boomerang - everything goes in a loop here; i.e. you see a certain power-up, move to the side far enough and you'll encounter the power-up again. +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= SELECTABLE WEAPONS/WINGS +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= When you first play the game, you will be able to select a number of weapons. I will explain them in detail, their pros and cons, and where they will be required to complete the level. Weapons come in wings, hence the name B-Wings. -------------- WING ONE: FX-1 -------------- This, my friend, is your plane. It looks like a tiny needle, and is nothing without its wings. The FX-1 fires a tiny shot that looks like an arrow. Very weak, needless to say and you can only have 2 shots on screen. Long-range shot. Projectiles: FX-1 Arrow Pros: Hey, you can't play the game without this. Cons: Weak as crap ----------------- WING TWO: CANNON ----------------- Your all-rounder weapon. Long range, and fast-moving bullets that go straight. With every shot you fire, 3 projectiles come out. You can only have a maximum of 2 shots on screen. Each bullet eliminates one enemy. Projectiles: 2 squares and 1 heart in the middle Pros: Straight-moving bullets, very fast Cons: Can only shoot straight ---------------- WING THREE: WIDE ---------------- Like its name, shots fired from this wing are narrow and compact at first, but as they travel across the screen, they get wider apart. You can only have a maximum of 1 shot on screen. When a bullet hits an enemy, all other bullets automatically dissapear and are fired again. Long-range weapon. Projectiles: Thin oblongs Pros: Wide, sweeps throughout the enitre screen Cons: Shots are too slow ---------------- WING FOUR: MULTI ---------------- Multi-purpose, multi-shots... This wing fires 4 kinds of shots: The first batch of bullets travels perfectly straight, the 2nd batch a slightly at an angle (45') , the 3rd batch at a sharper angle (75') and the last batch horizontally across the screen. (90') One batch consists of 6 shots. Long-range weapon. Projectiles: 4 squares and 2 FX-1 shots Pros: Versatile, multi... As the name states Cons: You can't focus at one target -------------- WING FIVE: VAN -------------- Beats me why the programmers called it this. Its projectiles travel for an extremely short distance, forming a kind of protective barrier around you. Fires 6 shots, and is a short-range weapon. Projectiles: Thin oblongs Pros: Very defensive Cons: Non-offensive -------------- WING SIX: SIDE -------------- Fires 7 shots; 3 fired to the left, 3 fire to the right, and one small heart fired forwards. Very weak forward offense, but destroys everything to the side. Long-range weapon. You will need this to complete some stages, so learn to like it! Projectiles: 7 hearts (3 left, 3 right, 1 forwards) Pros: Eliminates everything from the side Cons: You're toast if you have to move forward ---------------- WING SEVEN: ANTI ---------------- These wings fire shots in 2 directions, forwards and backwards. Pretty weak, but useful against enemies that sneak up from behind you. Long-range weapon. Projectiles: 8 hearts (4 front, in pairs of 2 and 4 back, also in pairs of 2) Pros: I can fire backwards Cons: Unfortunately, I fire forward as weak as I fire backwards ------------------ WING EIGHT: HAMMER ------------------ What the heck... This wing looks like 2 black bowling balls stuck together. When you first fire them, 2 bowling balls orbit around you, forming a protective barrier. wThey may not be effective, but still a shield. This shield lasts as long as you keep the wing. When the wing goes, so does the shield. Hammer fires a stream of 6 black bowling balls forward, in pairs of 2-by-2. Long-range. Mom used to play this game with me ages ago, and this was her favourite weapon. Projectiles: 6 "Hammer" bowling balls Pros: A protective shield is always welcome Cons: Lacks firepower --------------- WING NINE: JUMP --------------- Hmm... Tell me, does this look like a radio? Well, this weapon is appropriately named. Jump fires 2 shots that jump over everything, and explodes after it has traveled a certain distance. You will need Jump to complete a certain stage, as I will explain later. Projectiles: 4 diamonds, and 2 "Jump" shots Pros: "Jump" shots go through anything, and explode within their target Cons: When "Jump" shots jump over an enemy, the enemy is left unharmed -------------- WING TEN: DYNA -------------- I told you this game was weird! This wing looks like a bikini! Anyway, Dyna fires a concentrated shot that goes through enemies, so if they are 20 of 'em in a row, they'll all get destroyed. Its shot is in the shape of a cresent, with a diamond-shaped laser in the middle. Note that this diamond does all the damage, not the sides of the cresent. Projectiles: Diamond Cresent Pros: Projectile goes through all "one hit" enemies Cons: Limited range, limited radius +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ ENEMIES/STRUCTURES/POWER-UPS/SECRETS/BOSSES +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Along the game, you will encounter various enemies, obstacles and structures to make your life miserable. I'm listing all of them below... Enjoy. ---------- STRUCTURES ---------- Structures in this game come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. All of them have one thing in common; the DoomSpot, as I like to call it. One shot to this spot will eliminate the structure instantly, giving you space to go through. Most structures have other weak spots, which will only destroy a certain sector of it. Here they are. -= "H" Structure This structure is shaped like the letter H. Its DoomSpot is located in the middle of the two supporting pillars, and both pillars have a weak spot. -= Octagon Structures These structures look like an octagon. It has only one weak spot, which is located in the middle - a small multi-colored thingy. -= "Tap" Structures These structures look like taps, connected by a pipe. Its DoomSpot is located in the middle og the structure itself. -= Cable Structures These structures are laid out in long lines. Most of the time, between the folds of these structures, are some power-ups. Look for them! -= Side Structures Structures only vulnerable from the side, there are no other ways to destroy them. -= Neon Structures These look like neon lights, and consist of only one weak spot. Usually appear in numbers, connected together by a solid structure. -= "Sputnik" Structures I named these after the Russian satellite Sputnik One, which looked like a ball riddled with antennas. Anyway, these aren't much of a problem; weak spots are abundant. -= Land Mine Structures These look like land mines, hence the name, The whole structure is a weak spot, so there isn't much of a problem there. -= Solid Structures These structures have no weaknesses; the only way to destroy them is from the inside out, using Jump. Nothing else gets through. -= Delta Delta structures are shaped like triangles, with a barricade protecting the DoomSpot. Only make their appearance in the later levels of the game. -= Mix & Match Structures Now, this kind of structures are a combination of one or more basic structures above, looking like a bit of both. --------------------- ENEMIES & PROJECTILES --------------------- Here, I list down all the various enemies you will meet along the game - and variety there is! From frying pans to toy planes to cabbages (!) you'll encounter very quaint enemies never seen before in a shoot-em-up game. All projectiles come in the form of a small pink ball, with a (+) sign on it, and can be shot down (except the boss projectiles, those look different.) NOTE: All projectiles can be shot down. -= Bombs Green, strange and weak. These bombs come in groups of 5 each, and 2 groups at a time. Very weak, and fire no projectiles. -= Bats Bats look like... Well, bats with green wings. They sneak up from above, go halfway down the screen, rebound back up, lock on to your coordinates, and try to ram you to death. -= Sirens Sirens come from above, and fire a single projectile at you. If it misses, after a while they attempt to go kamikaze on you, so watch out. -= Octopi (Plural; singular octopus) Little green, round thingys with a face drawn on them. Moves forward like a sidewinder, and releases little projectiles while doing so. -= Diamonds Purple diamonds that fire projectiles at you. Before firing, its texture will turn rough, at which point it will start firing up to 3 shots. -= Syringes Syringes only appear before the boss, and come in numbers. Evasion shouldn't be tough, but don't hit them! -= Cabbages Don't ask. These look like cabbages, and will come close to you from above. Once in range, they start shooting, until they run out of projectiles (3). After that, they fly away. -= Barrels Barrels fly in a straight line at high speed, and release projectiles while doing so. No threat here, but be careful. -= Homing Drills These guys come in a pack, with no drills in the middle. Sounds easy? Well, not really. The slightest movement sideways will send all of them hurtling towards you simultaneously, and are tough to evade. Note that moving up and down won't activate them. -= Darts Darts come in a straight line, and come 6 in a pack. 2 packs will come at once. Fire no projectiles, but are fast and home in slightly. -= Spiked Cymbals These come from the side, and attempt to crush you between them. Side is reccommended here, as these are quite fast and tough to evade. -= Cupcakes Strange, right? Anyway, cupcakes come from the side, usually from above. They come in a row of 6, and fire a single projectile each. Once done, they attempt to ram you one by one, rushing forward. -= Toy Aeroplanes ... Go see for yourself. Little green planes that come in huge numbers, these fly around the screen trying to hit you. Quite tough to evade, but move in a fixed pattern. Once you're used to them, they aren't so tough. -= Frying Pans Okay, this is getting strange. Frying pans really look like frying pans, and consist of 2 sections - the pan, and the handle. These will try to fling the pan at you, while the handle runs away. If you hit the handle, the pan will automatically be released, flying towards you at high speed. Hit the pan first and the whole ship gets destroyed. -= Retractors These look like old-fashioned balusters (ala my grandpa's house.) They surface from nowhere, at which point they are invulnerable, and after a while, they expand to full size. They can only be attacked during this time, at maximum size. -= Stern Bats Unlike the green bats that I explained above, Stern Bats come from behind you, and try to hit you from behind. If it fails, they return from the front for another try. -= Space Shuttles Like the Stern Bats, the shuttles come from behind, but in a straight line instead of homing onto you. Come in groups of 10, and accelerate with distance. -= Caterpillars Remember the Stern Bats? These behave the same way, but are much quicker. These fly from behind, up to the end of the screen, and attempt to ram you. -= Carrots Here are another from-your-rear type of enemies. Carrots fly up past you slowly, and try to ram you (don't they all?) These are rather slow, but have excellent homing capibility. -= Y-Flyers Yet another from-your-rear kind of enemy, Y-Flyers fly towards you at high speed. Very tough to avoid. ----------------- POWER-UPS & ITEMS ----------------- There are a number of power-ups and items in the game, each with unique abilities. These are normally found lying underneath a strtcture, so they only appear after you destroy it. Some power-ups/items cannot be shot; if you happen to shoot it, it turns into a pink umbrella - at which point it dissappears. On the other hand, some items and power-ups need to be shot in order to change its effect... Here they are. -= Morph This item is normally found floating down towards you, shaped like a green, glowing upside-down umbrella. Anyway, pick this up and you can morph into any wing you want, at any time you want. This can only be used once, so if you want to morph again, you'll have to pick up another one. There is no limit to how much you can store. Use by pausing the game, and pressing SELECT to change your wing. Once you get the wing you want, press START to unpause the game, and the wing should be there. Can be shot down. -= Skip This item can only be found under certain structures. Pretty easy to spot, since it looks like a shooting star, complete with tail. Take this and you'll skip ahead the current stage by 4 stages, bosses and all. Can be shot down. -= Medal: Heart/Diamond/Spade/Club Another item normally found underneath a structure, this will flicker on and off, changing the current symbol at random. Fire and it will stop at a certain symbol, for you to take, (you can also take it at random, no harm there.) Here's what the symbols mean: Heart......... Adds one extra life to your FX-1 Spade......... Allows you to morph 3 times (i.e. pick up 3 morph items) Club.......... Adds a sheet of armor to your FX-1 chassis Diamond....... Adds a sheet of armor to your FX-1 chassis The more armor you collect, the higher the protection of the FX-1. Don't worry about shooting the Medal down; it's invulnerable. NOTE: The armor upgrades need to be taken on and off - if you take 2 Diamonds in a row, nothing happens. You need to go like Diamond, Club, Diamond, Club etc for the armor to upgrade. -= Knight Medal Something like the power-up above, the Knight adds an extra life to your FX-1. Cannot be shot down. -= Knight The symbol of a knight, ala in chess. Beats me what this one does. Will try to find out. -= Shot Wing The Shot Wing is a green, glowing triangle floating above you; shoot it to change the current letter, which in turn changes the wing. This will override your current wing if you pick it up, so be warned. One shot will shift the letter by one; the more you fire, the faster it changes. Here are all the letters, and what they stand for: S.......... Side F.......... Fire H.......... Hammer V.......... Van J.......... Jump D.......... Dyna M.......... Multi A.......... Anti C.......... Cannon This cannot be shot down. -= Abandoned Wings Floating Wings are abandoned wings by other planes. These are wings flying about at random, flown by two "arms" attached on each side. Shoot the arms down to release the wing, press B to eject your current wing, and reattach to the abandoned wing by picking it up, where it snaps on instantly. If you see this kind of wing floating around, it's normally the reccommended wing for a certain area. ------------ SECRET WINGS ------------ There are 3 secret wings in the game, found underneath structures. These cannot be shot down, and if you pick it up, your wings will instantly be changed to the secret wing, regardless whether or not you release your wings. -= Multi-Hammer This wing fires a large amount of Hammer shots, spreading in every direction - but it has no shield. Hits everything at the side, back and front, making your life a bit easier, and it certainly doesn't hurt your score either! Pros: Hammers travel everywhere; hitting everything Cons: Weak, weak. -= Ring Lasers Fires 2 Ring Lasers to the front that go through all opponents and beyond, destroying everything in its way, and even has a Hammer-style shield to go with it. Great for mowing down legions of enemies, but aren't powerful against bosses. Pros: The enemy-mower Cons: The bosses own it -= X-Ray Like the Ring Lasers, the X-Ray cuts through all enemies, except that it fires 4 rays in 4 different directions simultaneously. Front, back, left and right are all covered. Oh, like the Ring Lasers, the X-Ray also isn't great for taking out bosses. Pros: Mows enemies in 4 directions Cons: Limited radius; weak against bosses ------------ STAGE BOSSES ------------ At the end of every stage, lies a boss, which looks like a space station of some kind (there are exceptions, though.) Defeat the boss to get on with the game, and proceed to the next level. Some bosses can be defeated with the FX-1, and some require specific weapons or you'll lose. Here are a list of all bosses... -= Boss 1: Nebula The Nebula boss constists of 5 sectors; the 2 barricades, 2 external tanks and the Doom Spot. Use Fire to make mince meat out of this - no sweat. -= Boss 2: Andromeda Andromeda has 8 sectors, including the Doom Spot. Fire'll make mince meat out of this too. -= Boss 3: Spydra A giant spider that shoots a huge amount of sparks at you. It is invulnerable, except during the spark-spraying period, where it opens its eyes. The only way to attack it is to destroy bothy sparks and hit the spider, all in one shot. Dyna can do the job here, but as usual, Fire makes it look easy. -= Boss 4: Scorpio Scorpio has 4 barricades, all in a line. Only straight projectiles can make their way into the protected sides, so a wing like Cannon or Hammer would do well. Alternately, take Fire, and if you're brave, enter the corridor and wipe out the DoomSpot. It'll be over in a matter of moments. -= Boss 5: Scorpio 2 Like Scorpio, you have to fly into the solid parts to do any real damage - but this is a bit tougher this time. Take out the 4 barricades, shoot from range and hope that a shot hits. This may take a while, but you'll suceed eventually. Either that, or you rush in gung-ho and fire at will, which is much riskier, but it'll save you time. -= Boss 6: Frogger Like its name, this boss looks like a green frog, and lays eggs about the screen. When they hatch, they turn into tiny bombs, which soon flood the arena. As usual, Fire works best. -= Boss 7: Solid Style Okay, we have a problem now. This boss looks like a huge solid structure, and the only way to hit the DoomSpot is by using Jump. No other ways (you can use Hammer's shield and kamikaze yourself, and in the next stage you'll have no wing.) It's pretty weak though, so keep at it and it'll go bust. -= Boss 8: Draco Remember Frogger? Meet Draco. A snake-like boss, Draco squirts little bombs in a straight libe, in your direction. Once again, Fire will make short work of Draco here - less than 2 seconds, to be exact! -= Boss 9: Saidos This boss can only be attacked from the side, hence the name "Saidos". Use Side here, or you're doomed! Hammer's shield can do this too, but it's very risky and not worth taking. -= FINAL BOSS: HYPER FINALE The HF can has 8 barricades, and a permanent one - its mouth. The boss only takes damage if its mouth is open, providing an entrance to its DoomSpot. Alas, for a final boss - Fire makes short work of this one. Go get 'em! Only located in the final level of the game. +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= LEVEL LIST/GENERAL WALKTHROUGH +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Okay people, there are 30 stages, ya hear me, 30!!! I won't explain them in detail, so I'll only tell you what you're up against, what kind of enemies there are, structures, power-ups, the bosses and the reccommended weapon. Here's what they mean. Enemies............... The type of enemies in a certain level. Structures............ All types structures in a level. Background color...... The background color of a stage. Wing Select........... In some stages, you can select a wing, like in stage 1. Mostly, this will be NO, but YES in certain stages. Items................. What type of items are available in a stage Power-Ups............. As above, for power-ups. Secret Wings.......... Again, as above but for secret wings. Boss.................. The type of boss you'll meet. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Allrighty now! You've completed 30 boring, dull stages - to come to an even duller ending. All the bosses that you've defeated come out in a cinematic sequence, and are displayed to you - inclding the Hyper Finale. A really strange song accompanies it; I can't imagine it took me this long to complete such a simple game. Once all the bosses are shown, some strange Japanese words come out; OMEDETO! KMIMNO SHIMEIWA OWATA. KOREKARANO KIMINO SHIMEI WA BENKYO DA. GANBATTE KURE. IJIME WA DAMEDAYO! STAFF H.YOSHIDA Y.SUGAHARA N.NAKAZAWA A.HARA T.YAMAGUCHI Y.KITAHARA THE END So, not much of an ending there... No storyline to begin with, and no storyline to end it. Not much of a workforce, either - 6 people? Anyway, you've completed one of the dullest, most boring game ever created - so be proud of it. If anyone can translate the words above, do contact me; I'll put it in the FAQ and give you full credit for it. Believe it or not, this FAQ has been delayed for nearly 6 months now... A tribute to DECO! +=+=+=+ CREDITS +=+=+=+ - Hi Mom! Heh. I can't believe we used to play this together... Ah, the joy of childhood. Love ya, mom! - Auntie Julie, thanks for the cartridge you got for me in 1990! If it wasn't for you, I'd never have got a NES - you bought me my first. - Eddie. Hello, cousin. You've changed so much over the years, we don't seem to think like we used to when we were kids, eh... Anyway, I hope you remember the fond memories we had playing this game... I will. - CJayC... Yo CJay. This is my first FAQ on the NES. Rather small, wait till I get a bigger game soon enough. - Myself! Hey, I wrote this, didn't I? I've verifyied, tested and painstakingly looked at every detail to write a good FAQ. - My computer, for putting up with all the crap I've done. - Finally, to whom this game wouldn't be here without, Data East Corporation. I've never really known other games that you've produced, but this particular game has a huge amount of sentimental value to me. Thank you for the memories. +=+=+=+=+= LEGAL INFO +=+=+=+=+= And just in case... ___________________________________________________________________ This FAQ is written by Eizaz and is copyright ©Eizaz Azhar, 2003.
