Closing/Legal Notes =============================================================================== 1 - INTRODUCTION - 1 This FAQ/Strategy Guide, made by myself (Bass0r), was designed to help with understanding basics of Aussie Rules Footy for the Nintendo Entertainment System. This is the first full FAQ/Walkthrough I have made, so hopefully I have covered enough information to give you, the reader, an in-depth understanding of how this game works, and will enable you to play with ease. Happy reading. =============================================================================== 2 - VERSION HISTORY - 2 V 1.0 - Completed FAQ/Walkthrough on Thursday, 3 June 2004, 3.54 PM (Australian time) v 1.1 - Fixed a stupid error that I never picked up on (thanks, kurrupt). v 1.2 - Finally added strategies, allowing it to actually by a strategy guide. v 1.3 - Ran it through a spellchecker, found some errors, and fixed them. =============================================================================== 3 - BASIC RULES - 3 The rules for Aussie Rules Footy are much like those for a standard game of Australian football, only much more simple. For those who don't know the rules, or are completely new to Australian football, the aim of this game is to basically kick the ball into your point-scoring area, and finish with more points than the opposing team. Each game has four quarters, and each quarter lasts 25 minutes. The game field is an oval, and either side are the teams' scoring areas (known as posts, but more about this is covered in the "Scoring" section of the Walkthrough). Here is a "easy-to-follow" guide of how the game is played. BEGINNING The umpire (man in white uniform) will bounce the ball from the ground. The two players from either side run towards the ball and jump up to try and tap it to one of their own team members. When the ball is caught, the real gameplay starts. GAMEPLAY The player with the ball must run towards their points area (which is located on the opposite side from which you started), and kick the ball accordingly (the "Scoring" section covers this). The opposing team can try to get the ball from you (trying to tackle the ball away from you by running into you), and in this case, you can kick the ball away, or handball it to another player. A handball is where the player punts the ball with the side of his fist, launching it from his hands to another player. Players without the ball can jump in the air to either block a kick, or catch a falling ball for what is called a "mark." When a mark is obtained, the player who caught the ball is able to kick the ball freely to another area, without any opponents interfering, or can "play on" by continuing to run. A play on is announced by the referee's whistle (a beeping noise). OUT OF BOUNDS Around the gameplay area is a white line, in which if the ball passes this line (even if a player has the ball in their possession), the umpire will throw it backwards from behind the line, for two players from the two teams to try and obtain possession of the ball once again. After the ball is obtained by a player, the game resumes. OUT OF BOUNDS ON THE FULL If the ball is kicked by a player, and goes out of bounds before bouncing on the ground, an out of bounds on the full is played. When this occurs, the opposing team (opposing to whoever kicked the ball). Gains possession of the ball and plays it as a mark (can either kick the ball freely or play on) from outside the boundary lines. =============================================================================== 4 - CONTROLS - 4 Menu Controls .________________________. | Button | Function | |------------------------| | Start | Select option | | Select | Scroll down | | A | Select | | B | N/A | .------------------------. There are two different scores, also; a goal and a point. Goals, scored when the ball is kicked in between the two large posts, is worth 6 points. A point is scored when the ball goes between one of the large posts and one of the smaller ones, and is worth one point each. Below is a diagram example if the above explanation did not make sense. | | | 6 | | | | | | 1 | | 1 | | | | | Point Goal Point On the scoreboard, when a player scores a goal or point, a goal umpire appears, determining what score it was by waving a white point flag. One white flag is a point, both white flags mean a goal. =============================================================================== 6 - GAME MODES - 6 i) SINGLE PLAY Single play will allow you to choose your team, team colours, opponent, opponents' colours, and how if you want to play in one or two-player mode. The game will play for the whole four quarters, and uses all standard rules. ii) SEASON Season is like a tournament mode. You will choose how many human players will take part (one, four or six), and choose the amount of teams and their colours, corresponding to however many teams you chose at the start. After selecting, it will begin with a random selection of CPU teams and colours, and the game will be played in a knock-out fashion (winning team of a match will move up the ladder until they beat the last team). The amount of CPU teams will vary, depending on the amount of human players. There can be up to six teams in total, meaning the more human characters are playing, the less computer teams will be selected. For example, One player = Five computer teams Four players = Two computer teams Six players = No computer teams iii) KICK TO KICK Kick to kick is a practice mode, where you can learn to perfect the controls and get to know how the CPU acts. First, you will need to select if this is a one or two player practice, and then how many players will be on either side (up to three-a-side). To exit this mode, you will need to press the Start button. =============================================================================== 7 - ABOUT TEAMS - 7 Selecting a certain team will not affect your playing style or performance, it is just a feature for people who favour a certain team rather than another. There are 18 teams, all based on the cities that had Aussie Rules football teams in the '80s. These teams are Adelaide, Brisbane, Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Footscray, Geelong, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Perth, Richmond, St Kilda, Sydney, Hobart, Canberra, Darwin and North Melbourne. After selecting your team, you will then be prompted to select a team colour. This is only to recognise your players from the other teams', and include 8-10 colours in total (unconfirmed). When playing Season or Single Play modes, it will not matter which team you or your opponent choose, because they are all equally the same, and tactics are not different throughout the game. Each match is played differently, but no teams have a specific style of gameplay, and all will vary. =============================================================================== 8 - SIMPLE STRATEGIES - 8 KEEPAWAY This will probably sound like one of the most obvious strategies, but it is not often thought about. Keeping the ball away from your opponents. Obvious? Yes. Sure, you may think "Well, of course I should keep the ball away," but when playing the game, you will usually consider the main objective to get the ball through your goals. That isn't necessarily the case. The easiest thing to do is keep the opponents away from the ball; this will allow you to have a better chance of winning, especially when you've already scored some points. One good way to do this is by constantly kicking to your teammates. Handballs can be useful, but don't use them too often, as opponents can easily block them. TACKLE, TACKLE, TACKLE Tackling is the easiest way to get the ball away from your opponents. To do this, simply run into your opponent, and keep them covered (basically attempting to run through them). This will cause them to drop the ball, allowing you to retrieve it, and hopefully keep control of it. =============================================================================== 9 - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - 9 Q: What is Aussie Rules Footy? A: "Aussie Rules Footy" is short for "Australian Rules Football," a sport played in Australia. The sport has been an Australian pastime for over 50 years, and is still played today, by both professional sportsmen and people out to have fun. =============================================================================== 10 - CLOSING/LEGAL NOTES - 10 Copyright 2004 Ryan "Bass0r" Steele.
