It was developed by Graphic Research and released by Asmik Ace Entertainment, Inc at the December 1991. It isn't very surprising, that it wasn't released outside Japan, because it is not a very good game. It controls are quite bad and despite some colorful levels, they are quite repetitive and badly designed. Music on the other hand is pretty good for a NES-game, though. There are total of three Asmik-Kun Land games; one for NES and two for Gameboy. Only first one of the Gameboy games got released in United States. It never reached Europe. In USA, it was called "Boomer's Adventure in Asmik World". =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= TABLE OF CONTENTS ================= - 01 - Storyline - 02 - Gameplay 02A............... Left and right - Moves Boomer around A-button - From this, Boomer jumps B-button - Performs a tail-whip, turns monsters into collectable eggs Start - Does nothing Select - Opens a sub-menu, where you can select abilities or enter the shop ======================== - 02B - Playing the game ======================== It takes only one hit for you to lose a life, so be careful. Boomer's controls are not very flexible, so it can be easy to die. Your main currency in this game are eggs. You will get these by performing tail whip on monsters. When you enter a shop, you can trade these eggs in exchange items with different abilities or even extra lives. Try saving eggs as much as possible, since if you lose a boss battle, you will lose some items in stock as well. Also, there is no time limit in levels, so take your time completing them. Do note that the scrolling system is similar to Super Mario Bros; screen only scrolls forward. Remember to kill as many enemies as possible! =================== - 02C - Shop System =================== Whenever you press a Select-button in game, a submenu opens with whatever items you currently have in stock. By pressing a button in lower-right corner, you can access the shop in game. Here's what each command does: Item - Buy/sell different abilities here. Just choose the amount of abilities you want to buy. Score - Raise your score using eggs as currency. Higher the point amount, more eggs you will use. ?UP - A lottery of getting extra lives. It spends all your current eggs and you can get from 1 to as much as 10 extra lives. Exit - Simply leaves the shop ============= - 02D - Items ============= From the shop, you can purchase different items for different price. I will explain how much different items cost and what do they do. Note, all names are unnofficial, since I haven't found an official list from them anywhere yet. Roll - Cost: 3 eggs - Roll onto enemies for a brief amount of time, turning them to eggs Bird Form - Cost: 7 eggs - You can fly around for a brief amount of time by holding A-button Star Shot - Cost: 7 eggs - Instantly kills all enemies on your screen Haste - Cost: 3 eggs - Makes you much faster for a brief amount of time Time Stop - Cost: 12 eggs - Immediately stops every enemy activity for a brief amount of time Immortal - Cost: 7 eggs - Makes you invulnerable to every enemy for a brief amount of time Bubble - Cost: 5 eggs - Lets you stay underwater without air meter filling up One OK! - Cost: 5 eggs - Let's you withstand two hits before dying Fan Shot - Cost: 5 eggs - Shoots fan-like projectiles diagonally upwards Bowling - Cost: 5 eggs - Drops a bowling ball, killing enemies, until it hits a solid wall Fireball - Cost: 5 eggs - Spits a fireball moving in zigzag pattern; shoots only one at time =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= - 03 - Walkthrough =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= You start off in an island. A various signs (in japanese) indicate different levels. Your first level will be right below where you start; a basin. ==================================== - 03A - Karuka Basin (Karuka Bonchi) ==================================== Karuka Basin 1 -------------- Stage starts off as simple. There are flowers in ground and in blocks and... some forks and knives too. These are some enemies you will face: Green Snails - they move slow and are easy to kill Face Monster - whenever you approach them, they shoot a mushroom; they are immobile, so they are simple to kill Orange Cross - undestroyable, if whole cross is visible, touching it will kill; if only upper part is visible, you can walk through it Black Ball - they float slowly in the air, then turn into a small spike and fall down; not hard to kill Rabbits - moves faster than snails but they shouldn't pose a threat Keep going and you meet again some new enemies. Red Frog - basically same as Green Snails, only a different sprite Dark Cloud - assuming that they seem to "drop" small amounts of rain, they are quite predictable, just move under them accordingly Pink Tulip - they are like green snails, but whenever they stop for a small while, they release some a small amount of powder around them And at the end of the level, you'll meet another new enemy: Fat Bird - they fly upwards very slowly so they shouldn't pose any threat; they have no other attacks Eventually, you will reach to the end of part 1. Karuka Basin 2 -------------- Things are much more colorful now... it doesn't even feel like basin at all. Every enemy in this level are same as in the previous part, so there shouldn't be any need to explain again. If you need to proceed quickly, you can use those balls as platforms. Another new feature in this level is a Boomer getting weird "hiccup"-effect, where he jumps once a while into air without any warning. These can occur even in mid-air and Boomer always falls straight down. If you get this effect, be very careful if you need to jump over pits and monsters. It's very straightforward to the end, where you will get to boss battle next. NOTE: This "hiccup"-effect only occurs whenever you land on yellow balls. Avoid them at all costs, small or large! Karuka Basin Boss - Green Bird ------------------------------ After a brief discussion about fragment, the green bird brags about, how he is not easy to beat. And thus begins the game of rock-paper-scissors! Despite all japanese and stuff, it's very simple to win this fight. Basically choose "scissors" every time, since computer will always choose "hand". When you get a chance, hold A and move Boomer along the path in bottom side of the screen. Repeat this until you get to very end of path. You will get your first fragment and enter the shop. Do your purchases and leave. Upon exiting the shop, you have three different levels to choose from. At the left is island (shima), at the right is mountain (yama) and the level below you is a lake (numa). For now, let's go to left to the island. ====================================== - 03B - Yum Yum Island (Yamu Yamu-tou) ====================================== Yum Yum Island 1 ---------------- You might want to use an extra life lottery at the shop, since you may run on low of lives at here. This level is more difficult than the previous one. At the below is a surfboard you can use as travelling while killing new monsters. Even if you fall, you can still move in a water, although your moving speed is greatly reduced. This is because the water is going upstream - walk left and you move twice as fast. The path is straightforward but enemies are all new. Not much solid platform to move in as well so be careful. Bird Head - very slow moving monsters, similar to Green Snails and Red Frogs Minor Witch - these small creatures fly forward with broom and drop some green facelike monsters occasionally; they hop once and explode You will face only two of these quite long, when eventually you'll meet up with another new face: Lizard - these can be pain, if you are in their line of sight; they charge at you pretty fast, so you have hard time avoiding them. There are also some conveyor belts in mid-air too. You can't move on them, so just hop forward. Along the way, you meet again new enemies. Snake - their movement style is exactly like Bird Head, so treat them as you would treat Bird Heads Onigiri - Yes, onigiri; as you approach them, they hop upwards and when they land, they move towards you. They're not that hard. As you defeat two Onigiris, you are at the end of level. Yum Yum Island 2 ---------------- Allrighty, from a level full of ice creams to an underwater level without any actual water for you to see. Nice. Controls are simple. Just keep holding an A-button to swim upwards and you'll be fine. Bird Heads now move twice as fast on the ground when they approach at you, so watch out. Not too far into a level, you will meet up with new type of enemies: Green Apples - these are fairly numerous, but they only float from bottom of screen all way to the up; they don't pose much threat. Thundercloud - exactly same as Dark Clouds in the first level, except these are only stationary; they won't pose much threat This level is mostly swimming a simple path while avoiding floating apples. Towards the end path gets more zigzagging and tougher. Minor Witches also get much more numerous near the end. At the end, you'll reach a boss. Yum Yum Island Boss - Blue Hippo -------------------------------- Before the fight, the boss about if you came for a fragment and if you want it. This boss fight is similar to first one, but it has some twists. First of all, you start from left side and the boss starts from right side. Winner of this battle is whoever gets to the other side. Whenever you meet up with the boss along the path, a duel of rock-paper-scissors starts. Whoever loses it, gets thrown a small distance backwards. To win this fight easily with just six duels, choose the following order: rock x3, paper, scissors and paper. When you win, you won't get a fragment, but you do get again to the shop. Buy whatever you want and leave the shop. Upon returning to island map, you will get access to the sea (umi). =================================== - 03C - Yum Yum Sea (Yamu Yamu-kai) =================================== Yum Yum Sea 1 ------------- Now you are in an actual water. There is an air meter at the lower-right side of the screen. If it fills up, you die. Do not worry though, since it takes long time to get meter full. If you ever feel like to get fresh air, just jump out of water and the air meter goes back to zero. Therefore, getting enough air isn't really an issue. We are once again introduced into some new enemies. Fish - these small enemies swim slowly towards you, until you get near them, which makes them swim much faster towards you Boulder - exactly like Green Apples from the previous level Squid - they move like Green Snails and Red Frogs from the first level and they do not have any attacks Egg Crab - they move like crabs, yet no head is visible; they do not have any attacks at all Big Fish - another weird enemy; as you swim to near them, they suddenly shoot their own fish-bone at you Whirlpool - these don't kill you; they only toss you to random direction This level is once again very straightforward. Keep going while enjoying those fun-looking cat faces at the background scenery. After you see whirlpools for the first time, you see some familiar Bird Heads from the last level too. After swimming some more, you meet up with more new enemies; Fake Rock - they are immobile at the sea floor; when you approach them, a small monster suddenly jumps out of it Starfish - first they try to hide from you, then hop at you, then again hide; they do not have any other attacks Eventually, you'll reach the end. If your air meter is close to being filled, quickly jump out of water to get some air; the meter keeps filling up as you get to the next stage. Yum Yum Sea 2 ------------- Again, you are greeted by three fishes. These smaller fishes are much more numerous at the beginning, same with Fake Rocks. Keep going, avoiding boulders and whirlpools as well, until you can finally get out of water to the dry land. In here, you meet much more of those Egg Crabs than before, so approach them in caution without rushing. You also meet up with many Bird Heads and Onigiris, so treat them as before. You don't get to enjoy turtle-wallpaper for too long, until you reach the exit leading to another boss fight. Yum Yum Sea Boss - Sea Snake ---------------------------- This fight is based on a famous Japanese game, "Darumasan ga Koronda", meaning "Daruma Doll fell down". In other regions of the world, it is known under the name "Red Light, Green Light". Basically, hold A while the boss says "darumasan ga koronda". He will alternate saying it either slowly or very fast. If he catches you moving, you are penalized by 3 eggs. Upon reaching first dot on the path, another enemy starts off as well from the beginning. Do not let him catch you! If your egg amount reaches 0 and he still catches you, it's back to beginning of previous stage you just were on. Upon beating him, you'll get your second fragment! Once again, do your shopping and exit to the island map. Our next destination would be a lake (numa). =================================== - 03D - Tsu Tsu Lake (Tsu Tsu Numa) =================================== Tsu Tsu Lake 1 -------------- In a way this stage has some similar monsters to basin level. Red Snails and Green Frogs are only palette swaps from their basin counterparts. This time the background theme are pencils, which you can use as platforms. Keep going and you will meet even more new enemies. Legged Ballface - these green monsters aren't very tough, but they do move at decent speeds, when they approach you Sunglassed Seal - immobile enemies, which exhale slow-moving killing powder at you; avoid them with caution Keep going, killing many Green Frogs and other monsters, until you see yet again another new enemy. Ostrich - or at least these look like ones; they don't have any attacks, so you should have no problem killing them Eventually, after having your fill of pencils and tulips on the background, you will reach the end of first level. Tsu Tsu Lake 2 -------------- Now here are some oversized tomatoes on the background. And with the green chess-like background, it makes some enemies harder to spot, so proceed with caution. As you walk on, you'll see some new type of environments. One of them is a plank, which you can use to jump ever higher than before. Right next to it is some mud, which is very slippery; you don't have any control, so it's kind of like ice. Also be aware that rabbits jump higher than their basin level counterparts. Other than tat they are the same. Use planks later on to reach higher enemies, in case you are in need of any eggs. It's pretty easy and straightforward to the end of the level. Again, it's boss time next. Tsu Tsu Lake Boss - Work-out Monster ------------------------------------ In the dialogue, the boss laughts and brags about his every day exercising. Well it doesn't matter this boss fight, since it's once again about rock, paper and scissors. Basically hold A, until the two characters in the path meet. Whenever this happens, a duel in rock-paper-scissors occur. Keep winning, so the boss gets thrown back to the beginning of his path. When you reach to very end of this path, you will win. You receive yet another fragment. Three more! After doing your usual business in the shop, enter the forest (mori). ======================================= - 03E - Forest of Forest (Mori no Mori) ======================================= Forest of Forest 1 ------------------ What kind of name is this to a level? Aside from that small thing, this level is easily prettiest one so far plus the music is pretty good too. Those Grey Snails are still exactly same as other snails. Soon, you'll see a new enemy. Pink Squirrel - or something like that; they are like rabbits; they do nothing but hop around, so they should be easy targets Oversized Fly - these things fly slowly, until they approach you, in which case they fly much faster towards you Bomb - don't get near these things; if you do, they'll ignite and explode soon afterwards Metal Blade - these large things move on by themselves, then suddenly stop for a brief amount of times; they are invulnerable Keep killing/avoiding these monsters/obstacles, until you reach an area with many pits and pillars. Yet another new enemy appears; Monkey - approach them enough and they'll hop towards you once; just let them fall down and don't bother killing them It won't be too long after this, until you get to the exit of level. Forest of Forest 2 ------------------ Another pretty level. You can use those oversized nuts as platforms as you make any progress. Remember the weird hiccup-effect from part 2 of Karuka Basin? That effect occurs here too, in case you jump on top of these nuts. Yellow part is a safe spot, though. You will find plenty more of those monsters than on the last stage, so move with caution. Path itself is very straightforward and there are no new obstacles. At the end, you will get to the boss stage again. Forest of Forest Boss - Owl --------------------------- Owl gets surprised for you to get this far and does the usual "loser is going to hell"-remark. Soon after, the fight begins. It's yet another minigame with using rock-paper-scissors as basis. It's exactly same as the boss fight on the Tsu Tsu Lake, but whoever loses the duel, gets thrown back into beginning of their respective paths. Keep winning, until you get to end of your own path. After getting the fourth fragment and doing your usual shopping, you'll be back on the island map. There's only one choice, so choose the mountain (yama). ===================================== - 03F - Nickel Mountain (Nikkeruyama) ===================================== Nickel Mountain 1 ----------------- What's with the all bandages on the background? Anyway, first monsters you will see are Grey Snails, which are no problem. You will see Blue Frogs too, but they are no different to other colored frogs. But like other levels, this one has its share of new enemies too. Big Grey Beast - they are like rabbits, but much bigger and faster; they can be pretty hard to avoid, so be careful Mini White Toy - very small enemies with faces; they move faster than snails, but shouldn't pose much of a threat Purple Leaf - these purple things just float slowly downwards; invulnerable, but you can stand on them safely Face-Top - yellowish monsters, which move pretty fast along the ground; be careful with them Spikes - black thin spikes; kills you instantly upon touching them Keep moving along the straightforward path, killing all enemies you'll see and collecting eggs. Eventually you'll reach to end of path; it's not level exit yet, because you have to go downwards now. Be careful as you descend, as few Big Grey Beasts and Face-Tops can take you buy surprise. Also, at the bottom, there are two sets of spikes, which are not visible to you beforehand. Fall normally to right without any extra jumping and you should land safe. When you get to the right side, you'll reach exit. Nickel Mountain 2 ----------------- Keep descending the logs, until you see a weird platform on the left. Stepping on it will break the platform and the below is a spike pit. However, you have to break it, because the frog on the right will block your path. The path is very straightforwad, alternating between going up and down. There's another breaking platform ahead, but there's nothing beneath it. All enemies and obstacles are pretty much same from the previous stage otherwise. You might want to buy "One OK!"-item, in case enemies get too numerous. Other useful item for this level is a fireball, so you can shoot enemies safely from a good distance. After proceeding for so long, you'll reach the exit, which leads to the boss. Nickel Mountain Boss - Silver Guy --------------------------------- It's time for yet another duel for "Darumasan ga Koronda", just like the boss of the Yum Yum Sea. Each time he catches you for moving, you'll lose 3 eggs. It's otherwise the same thing, so keep going until you reach the end of path. Do remember that, when you reach pink dot on the middle, another enemy appears behind you. Do not let him catch you. You don't get a fragment piece for winning, but you get to do some shopping again. Purchase whatever you need and leave the shop. There's only one level, where you can go, and that is a mountain road (yamamichi). ================================================== - 03G - Sum Sum Mountain Road (Samusamu yamamichi) ================================================== Sum Sum Mountain Road 1 ----------------------- A combination of cakes and tomatoes on the background. At the start, there are familiar enemies, such as Egg Crab and Bird Heards from the Yum Yum-levels. After a first breaking green bridge, you'll meet new enemies. Hopping Boulder - a green boulder, which literally hops around; they are little fast, but shouldn't be hard to kill Sheep - a sheep, which shoots its own eyeballs at you; they are semi-homing, so kill them carefully Along meeting with some lizards and onigirs, you'll meet again some new faces, some less dangerous than others. Red Mushroom - these are immobile and doesn't have any attacks; easy to kill Mini Dragon - completely harmless; just like planks, they bounce you up Not too long after meeting with Mini Dragon and killing some enemies, you will get to the end of the stage rather quickly. Sum Sum Mountain Road 2 ----------------------- Upon entering the stage, you are greeted by two Hopping Boulders. This time, the background contains hills with flags and some vegetables. You can use those vegetables as platforms safely. Monsters are same from the previous level with bunch of Lizards added in. Mini Dragons aren't exactly necessary to use as bounces either. You have no option, but to keep going right, so you won't have trouble locating your way through the level. At the end, you'll exit to the boss stage. Sum Sum Mountain Road Boss - Pack of Ghosts ------------------------------------------- In the dialogue, the boss will do his usual provocation and challenge you to yet another duel. It's yet another round of "Green Light, Red Light", so you should know the rules already. A penalty for each time getting caught is 3 eggs and if the enemy running behind catches you, it's back to beginning of path. When you win this, the boss congratulates you and hands over fifth fragment! One more to go, so do your shopping and exit to the island map. Again, there is only one choice to choose from and that is the temple (dou). ====================================== - 03H - Shou Nyuu Temple (Shounyuudou) ====================================== Shou Nyuu Temple 1 ------------------ When you enter, you'll meet bunch of Egg Crabs, which should be very familiar by now. Some ways ahead you'll meet with a faster version of snake. Viper - smaller version of the snake from Yum Yum Island, except it moves much faster Pink Spike - approach them with caution, as they fall from the ceiling Black Bat - dark, flying creatures, who swoop pretty quick downwards, but rather slow upwards; pretty easy to kill Keep going, while enjoying the music and the style of this temple. Avoid many Pink Spikes and kill numerous Black Bats, when you eventually see a new enemy. Ceiling Spiral - small reddish things, which move around the ceiling; if they are near you and you go below them, they try to whip at you While going right, you need to hop over numerous pits and avoiding Pink Spikes. It's not very hard, but since there are some Egg Crabs to worry about too, it can get little tricky. Use a distance attack on them for safety. It won't be too long, until you reach the end of this stage. Shou Nyuu Temple 2 ------------------ You are greeted by very big lightbulb on the ceiling. Nice light effects, which bring good variety to otherwise simple looking temple. As you proceed forward, you will meet a new obstacle. Red Rock - these things randomly appear from the floor, then disappear; try to avoid them, since they are lethal and indestructible There isn't much to say about rest of the level, as it's very straightforward. Enemies get much more numerous later on, so use a distance attack, such as fireballs to take them out early. When you reach end, you'll get to the boss. Shou Nyuu Temple Boss - Blue Kobold ----------------------------------- Blue Kobold will begin his conversation by asking, if you're the one who has been collecting those fragments. After some more chit-chatting, an another rock-paper-scissors type fight occurs. It should be obvious by now. Hold A, until it prompts you to choose. If you happen to win, you can proceed forward. If not, you'll stay where you are and lose 1 egg. When you reach a pink dot in the middle of path, an enemy appears behind you. Now the bets are higher. If you lose, the enemy moves instead of you. If you let enemy catch you at any time, you'll be sent back to the very beginning of the path. Upon defeating this boss, you'll receive sixth and final fragment. Do your usual shopping and exit. When you enter an island map, screen flashes for few seconds. Cave of the sleeping dragon king appears on the Yum Yum Island, so head there. ================================================= - 03I - Dragon King's Grounds (Ryuujin no Daichi) ================================================= Dragon King's Grounds --------------------- It's time for a final challenge. As soon as you enter, you'll see a moon on the background along with plenty of puzzle pieces. You will also see many new enemies as well. Overall, this level has a very beautiful background. Lower Body - although different by looks, they behave exactly like any color of Snails you have seen before Upper Body - although different by looks, they behave exactly like Rabbits Toy Plane - small airplane, which drop some kind of small bombs, when you approach them Red Worm - they behave exactly like Snails Angry Face - they behave exactly like Face Monsters from Karuka Basin, but the projectile they shoot goes higher Minor Robot - these small enemies behave exactly like Monkeys from the Forest of Forest-level Ground Robot - they behave like Sheeps from Mountain Road level, but are little more mobile Charge Robot - remember the fast-moving Lizards from earlier levels; these robots have exactly same behavior This level is very long, but it's also the only one before boss battle. There are also many more enemies to fight in addition to small movement area, so be very careful and use your items accordingly. Feel free to use up all your items in this level. After you reach an end, you will get to the boss. Dragon King's Grounds Boss - Dragon King ---------------------------------------- After a lengthy dialogue about island and stuff, it's time for a final battle. And it will be about... "Red Light, Green Light!". Despite a bad choice for a final boss fight, don't take this battle lightly. Path, which you move on, is very long and the monster appears behind you quite early. Each time he catches you, you will lose 3 eggs. If you lose all eggs, it's back to beginning of the stage. If the monster catches you, it's back to beginning of path. Dragon King will alternate between slow to very fast, so you need to be quick on reflexes. Luckily there's not any movement penalization in getting caught; otherwise it would be a harsh fight. When you reach to end of the path, Dragon King will congratulate you and you'll get to see the ending.
