Introduction; 2. Items; 3. Boss Tactics; ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 1. INTRODUCTION This may seem like a strange sort of guide, since Abadox is a horizontal-scroll shooter, and shooters usually have no need for a complex guide. That's why I'm presenting mainly the best tactics for beating each mid-boss and boss of the game. In most shooters the best tactics would be quick reflexes and resistent thumbs, but in Abadox this isn't necessarily true, since most bosses have a weakness that can be used to turn you pratically invincible. That's why this guide may be necessary, for those who don't have the patience to memorize shooting patterns. I hope it's helpful enough. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 2. ITEMS DEFENSIVE: ++++++++++++++++++++++ Super Speed-Up: allows you to maneuver faster. Essential for surviving on any level. It's usually given near the beginning of the level; if you miss it, kill yourself and save time. Orbiting Barrier: the orbiting barriers will move around you to protect you from all sorts of enemy shots. If any shot hits the barrier, it will be absorbed. Notice the barriers have limited energy, so after some damage they'll be destroyed. However you can get up to 4 barriers (making you virtually invincible), and everytime you get a new one the enrgy of all of them will be replenished. You can adjust the orbiting radius of the barriers by holding down the A button; keep it pressed and they'll keep changing radius. Release the button when they're on the desired position. Keeping them too close isn't always the best option, unless you have 4 barriers. Power Protector: gives you extra-resistant armor, capable of absorbing one enemy shot. After one shot is absorbed the protector will be destroyed, but you can accumulate up to three protectors at once. Notice the protector is represented by the glow of your armor. It can only absorb shots, not hitting against walls or enemies. OFFENSIVE: ++++++++++++++++++++++ Tresbeam: a 3-way shot that compensates its slowness with power. Don't use this to shoot aimlessly due to its lack of speed. Precise shots can be deadly. Starbeam: weak but wide shot. It pratically covers all the screen, perfect for during the levels (killing multiple enemies) but too weak for bosses. Paradora Gun: releases a big ring of energy. It's the laser equivalent of the horizontal-scroll levels (if you haven't noticed, the Laser is never available on the horizontal levels: it's too slow for such). It's actually a Tresbeam condensed in a single shot. Laser Gun: the strongest weapon. Slow and narrow, but can take any enemy down quickly. Essential on the combat against Parasitis. Twin Missiles: the missiles are extra weapons that can be held along with any of the other listed above. After you press the shoot button, they'll be charged; when you release the button, they'll be fired. You can just press the button rapidly for constant shooting though. You can upgrade the missiles to Homing Missiles too, if you get two of the same power-up. The Homing Missiles are deadly in combination with any other weapon. It's hard to lose after you've got those. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 3. BOSS TACTICS NOTE: Not all bosses have official names, so when one isn't available, I'll leave it blank. ******************** Stage 1: Surface ******************** MID-BOSS: BAU There's a safe place for hiding from Bau: he won't shoot you there for sure. As soon as he enters the screen, position yourself EXACTLY below the second digit from left to right of your score, on the top-left part of the screen. If you have the Tresbeam (3-way shot), you don't even need to move yourself to hit him; but in case you're counting only on your normal gun, when he turns the back to you go down for a short time and shoot him, going back quickly up to the safe spot, where his shots won't get you. BOSS: DEATHFACE You can also hide safely from Deathface: when the boss music begins, stay a little above the center of the screen, and on the back. If you manage to stay between the eyes' shots, you're protected from everything else. Just keep shooting, even with the normal gun you don't need to move in order to hit him. ******************** Stage 2: Throat ******************** MID-BOSS: To be completely protected from all of this boss' shots, you can do the same trick used to defeat Bau: position yourself near the second digit (left to right) of your score display. But this time don't stay slightly below it, keep yourself slightly _over_ the digit (just slightly). You may be able to position yourself better once you see where his shots go through (if you are on the right spot you should be between them). Shoot him when he passes through the left side of the screen. However this boss' shots have a very easy-to-dodge pattern, so if you want to deal with him faster you may prefer following his head from the bottom to the left (don't shoot when he's on top/right), shooting and dodging. BOSS: Once again you can find a spot that makes you invincible. Stay on the top of the screen, slightly to the right (on the left it won't work) and you'll notice the central eye shoots waves of three shots in each direction. Stay the closest you can to the _central_ shot coming from the eye, approaching it from the right side. That's the safe spot, you won't be hit for sure. However you may need to move a bit to the left (over the central shot) to hit his eye and kill it. If that's the cause, wait for the short pause he does after firing two waves, move a bit left, shoot, then go back right and wait for the next pause. ******************** Stage 3: Nerves ******************** MID-BOSS: SHARK GUARDIAN Since his bullet waves are wide and constant, you're never safe enough on the left side of the screen. You should fly over the right side, where the shark "rests" (doesn't shoot); there he can just smash you with his body, but is very easy to dodge. Your problem will be hitting him. If you have upgraded up to the Homing Missiles, you can just go a little way left, shoot and go back right: the missiles will have enough space to make a 180ยบ turn and hit the shark. If you don't have the H-Missiles, but have the Tresbeam (3-way shot), you can attract the shark to the top or bottom edge of the screen, and when he's coming back from his right-to-left attack, you can position yourself safely below or above him, hitting with one of the beams. You can get the Tresbeam near the end of the level, but if you missed it, your best choice will be hiding and attacking when he's going to the left, in a more risky way: when he's going left, near the end of his movement he goes straight instead of diagonally. That is time when you can best hit him with the normal shot, then quickly dodge to the right border of the screen to avoid the shoots he releases when he's going back right. Always attract him to the top/bottom borders of the screen so it's easier to move back to the right. BOSS: This is very easy: he only shoots a wide wave of five crystals. Stay slightly above his middle shot (he'll only start shooting when his chest eye appears) and keep shooting to hit him. If the enemies that come from his head and chest get near you, you may need to move slightly in order to hit them, but not a difficult task. You won't need to move at all if you got the Homing-Missiles or any wider weapon than the normal shot (like the Tresbeam or the Paradora). ******************** Stage 4: Stomach ******************** MID-BOSS: KING CRAB You can't hide from his shots but you shouldn't need to. He'll fire waves of beams to the top, and eventually move upwards to fire closely. While he shoots, try shooting him but priorize dodging. After he goes up, he will make a pause on his shooting while going down, so that's the best moment to kill him fast. BOSS: CILIA When you have the choice to go either right or left, go left, avoiding the "teeth" and destroying all the small enemies. When you get to the bottom of Cilia, its eye should appear, shooting lasers at you. There's a small enemy on the left of the screen, so if you don't have a gun capable of aiming diagonally leave him alone. You must position yourself exactly above the place where that little enemy is, obviously a little to the right to avoid hitting the wall. If you find this spot you can't be hit neither by Cilia or that little pest. Killing Cilia is easy, as it opens its eye twice but only shoots once. When the turn where it doesn't shoot comes, go right and attack quickly, then move back left. ******************** Stage 5: Intestines ******************** MID-BOSS: THREE GUARDIANS There's no easy way to do this one. Just don't concentrate on hitting them, but dodging instead. Keep close to the left wall and avoid their shots at all costs. Never go close to the ceiling/floor or they may trap you. While you dodge, keep pressing the shoot button without aiming and eventually you'll destroy them. Note they all die at once, not one by one like you would expect. BOSS: GUARDIAN COMMANDER The Guardian Commander may be hard but fortunately there's a safe hiding spot for this one too. If you got the Tresbeam (3-way) or Star Beam (5-way) it'll be even easier. Position yourself exactly on the center of the screen, horizontal-wise, but vertically keep a bit near the bottom, right under the twin lasers he shoots from his arms. Adjust your position to make the lasers go above you and the crystal shots don't get you. You may think staying on the back would be easier but stay on the center so you're prepared to face his second pattern as well. From where you are you'll probably not be able to hit his vulnerable spot, the head, but don't worry. Soon enough his head will de-attach and will come shooting towards you in a half-moon pattern. Keep your position. It'll shoot from the back (on the spot mentioned above you should be safe from those shots too), and then it will fly in front of you shooting close. When it flies close, go backwards to be safe from his front shots as well, and keep shooting him. When he moves back to the left, return to the safe spot. May be boring but he'll be dead quickly and you won't have to worry about all the other dozens of shots on the screen. Just move horizontally, always keep the vertical position. ******************** Stage 6: The Core ******************** NOTE: My intention here isn't giving level advice, since this is a simple shooter, but there's one thing you should be aware about on this level or you'll likely perish. Sometimes waves of 6 green firey ghosts will come from each corner of the screen, trying to gather on the center. When they gather, they'll form a Phoenix sort of bird and leave the screen. If you destroy any of those fires, however, the rest will follow you until you manage to kill them all (very unlikely). So memorize the parts where the fires appear and stop shooting for a moment to let them pass safely. MID-BOSS: Here you'll be obligated to face the homing green fires. The five eye-monsters on the bottom of the screen will keep releasing those, making your job harder. You can destroy the smaller eyes before the big central one, but if you keep shooting the central one alone you'll destroy it all at once. I recommend going for the small ones first in order to make it easier (less ghosts on the screen). In order to avoid the ghosts, keep flying in a circualr pattern around the center of the screen, and shooting aimlessly. Concentrate more on protecting yourself than shooting. If you keep your constant pattern you'll notice it's not hard at all. BOSS: PARASITIS CORE OK this is the last boss, and the only really hard one on the game. It seems they decided to put all the hardness of the game on a single boss. Near the end of the level you'll come across a Power-Up Scorpion with the Laser beam, don't waste that chance to get the stronger weapon, you'll need it. This boss would be easy weren't for the homing ghosts coming from the sides of the screen. His shots leave some good safe spots to be used, but the ghosts will be always following you. Honestly, the easier way to do this is not missing the Laser and any Power Protector power-ups that you find through the level. With the Laser, you can get near the target (the green crystal on the left) and shoot as fast as you can. It should be killed before any ghosts get the chance to come near you. If you're not fast enough, hopefully your Power Protector shield will take the damage for you and you get another chance. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ I'd like to once again thank GameFAQs for hosting this guide, and on the old fashioned Capcom way, THANK YOU FOR PLAYING (reading?) ;) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) "Abadox: The Deadly Inner War" Boss Tactics Guide Version 1.0 Made by the "Last Cetra", which owns exclusive CopyRight E-mail: lastcetra@rpgclassics.com Any question/advice regarding this game may be sent to me.
