The main reason I wrote this was the Super Combo Challenge #5 which was very frustrating, so it gets its own part. However, I'll also go into challenges that are more difficult to get the gold award in than others, to my mind. Uhm, now it's almost year 2011, this might be a little late. I recently started to seriously play this game and I just got the 100%. When I bought this game many years ago I only played it rarely because it was too hard for me at that time. However, I think that there are still some people playing this game. Or they've just started to play it again like I did. I hope that this guide will help you to cope with some challenges. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =================== 02 - General Tips =================== =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= I assume that you actually own this game and that you know that there are 3 (actually 4) different types of challenges: Race ------ To get the gold award in this type of challenge you just need to finish first place. Weapons can help you at achieving it, especially if you're chasing the 1st vehicle most likely being a Piranha II, but apart from that they aren't that necessary. Memorize the locations of the boost pads. You might want to practice the course in Time Trial Mode before you try the actual challenge. Some challenges still allow you to get the gold award if you bump into some walls but you should try to avoid doing so, of course. On higher speed levels, you might need to use the air brakes. Time Trial ------------ Here, you just have to finish one lap in a specific time. This type only requires skill and memorization, no luck. Usually, they are pretty hard and you have to try many times until you get the gold award. Stay close to the turns, only use air brakes if necessary and don't bump into walls. If you're approaching a sharp curve you should stay at the outer part of the curve so that you get through the curve more easily. Press up or down depending on the situation to decrease the speed loss if you're ascending or descending. Sometimes it might be useful if you "fly" intentionally (maybe with the turbo boost) to skip small parts of the course. A mistake is most likely enough to make you restart. And you should try around to see whether it's possible to get through (seemingly) sharp turns without using the air brake. Weapon -------- I think this mode is the easiest one. You only need to kill a certain number of vehicles and you can still win if you just finish last place. Don't go too slow or you will run out of time. Memorize the locations of all weapon pads and prefer them over boost pads if you can choose. Try to aim for AG Systems and FEISAR (maybe Auricom, too) as their shield isn't very good and ignore Piranha II and Qirex but a gold award mostly requires you to destroy some ships of these types. Don't do the boost start. A "meh"-start (~50% of the speed meter) is enough. Super Combo ------------- (Unlocked by finishing all Race, Time Trial and Weapon Challenges with a bronze award, at least) These Challenges are a combination of Race and Weapon Challenges and pretty fun as some only contain your special weapons or have Cyclone enabled so that you can easily mow down your enemies as you're driving. However, the harder thing here is to finish 1st place so it's recommended to prefer the boost pads. If you're lucky you can kill the 1st Piranha II before the Race ends. (Unfortunately,) this mode depends on luck the most, I'd say. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ========================== 03 - Challenges ========================== =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Here is a list showing all the challenges in this game. I'll only give tips and hints for challenges being much harder than other ones. Most of them just require lots of practice. Race =-=-=-= Race Challenge 1 ---------------- Track: Klies Bridge Class: Venom Team: Feisar Weapons: Autopilot, Electrobolt, Energy, Mines, Missile, Rocket, Quake, Shield, Thunder Bomb, Turbo, Minigun (All+Special Weapon) Bronze: 3rd Silver: 2nd Gold: 1st As this applies to all Race Challenges, I'll leave it out then. Race Challenge 2 ---------------- Track: Dyroness Class: Venom Team: AG Systems Weapons: No weapons Race Challenge 3 ---------------- Track: Qoron IV Class: Rapier Team: Qirex Weapons: All+Power Snare Comment: Althrough I didn't do any big mistake I still ended up being the 2nd and not seeing the 1st one made me wonder whether it was just a glitch that prevented the Piranha II from spawning, haha. However, there is a 1st Piranha II, it's just very fast. You really have to do pretty much everything perfect and use your weapons wisely (e.g. using the Turbo Boost at the end without bumping into another vehicle or using it to fly) and you'll need lots of luck. Race Challenge 4 ---------------- Track: Terafumos Class: Rapier Team: Feisar Weapons: No weapons Race Challenge 5 ---------------- Track: Sokana Class: Phantom Team: AG Systems Weapons: All+Shield Raider Race Challenge 6 ---------------- Track: Machaon II Class: Phantom Team: Auricom Weapons: No weapons Race Gold Challenge ------------------- Track: Velocitar Class: Phantom Team: Qirex Weapons: All+Power Snare You unlock the Gold Challenge by getting gold awards at every challenge of the respective type. Comment: This one is pretty hard and also needs lots of luck. You need to use air brakes really often. Use the Feisar at the beginning to accelerate better by making it bump into you. If you position yourself properly you can drive through the tunnel without steering. Then gather speed with the boost pads and "fly" to the right. Try to land without bumping into the walls (maybe you'll have to practice that). If you have an Autopilot use it before you land because the part afterwards is apparently unfair as the CPU vehicles suddenly get a speed boost without any reason. Using the autopilot allows you to use it, too. Use weapons like Thunder Bomb or Quake when you have lots of enemies around you. Stay close to the walls when you use a turbo at the end of the track and prepare yourself to use the air brakes early to get through the first curve. Time Trial =-=-=-=-=-=-= (If you haven't already noticed that: the classes for every challenge type are: 1 and 2: Venom 3 and 4: Rapier 5 and 6 (and Gold): Phantom) Time Trial Challenge 1 ---------------------- Track: Dyroness Team: AG Systems Bronze: 0:37.0 Silver: 0:35.5 Gold: 0:33.5 Time Trial Challenge 2 ---------------------- Track: Terafumos Team: Feisar Bronze: 0:47.0 Silver: 0:45.5 Gold: 0:43.5 Comment: I used the turbo before the "bridge" (the second "DANGER" sign). I somehow didn't trust the auto-acceleration here and drove back to the boost pad to start the lap with (apparently) higher speed. Time Trial Challenge 3 ---------------------- Track: Sokana Team: Qirex Bronze: 0:42.0 Silver: 0:40.0 Gold: 0:37.5 Comment: I don't know a real hint here. Keep trying and don't bump into the walls. You can use the turbo before the last tunnel if you use the air brake then. The first curve doesn't need the air brake. Press down after the jump to lower the speed loss but be careful then because it's pretty easy to bump into a wall because of the higher speed. Time Trial Challenge 4 ---------------------- Track: Machaon II Team: Auricom Bronze: 0:44.0 Silver: 0:42.5 Gold: 0:40.5 Time Trial Challenge 5 ---------------------- Track: Qoron IV Team: AG Systems Bronze: 0:33.0 Silver: 0:32.0 Gold: 0:30.5 Comment: Use the turbo boost after the S-curve (after the 1st checkpoint) to fly to the left. This saves lots of time. Time Trial Challenge 6 ---------------------- Track: Klies Bridge Team: Qirex Bronze: 0:23.0 Silver: 0:22.0 Gold: 0:20.5 Time Trial Gold Challenge ------------------------- Track: Sokana Team: Piranha Gold: 0:31.5 Comment: No comment...Although this is a gold challenge, it's pretty easy because you can use a Piranha II which is really good. You can still get the gold award if you miss a boost pad. Weapon =-=-=-=-= Weapon Challenge 1 ------------------ Track: Machaon II Team: Feisar Weapons: Electrobolt, Mines, Missile, Quake, Rocket, Thunder Bomb, Minigun Bronze: Destroy 5 Silver: Destroy 3 Gold: Destroy 1 Weapon Challenge 2 ------------------ Track: Qoron IV Team: Auricom Weapons: Energy, Missile, Quake Bronze: Destroy 3 Silver: Destroy 5 Gold: Destroy 7 Comment: This one is weird. The biggest problem here is the time. One way of getting gold here is to overtake some enemies and then park your vehicle on a weapon pad (this might need some practice... or BRAKING SKILLZ! You might want to steer into a wall...), then press the Weapon Button like mad. The missile needs some time to lock on, be careful. Another way is to race until you are 1st and then park the vehicle. Have fun playing the bouncer! Weapon Challenge 3 ------------------ Track: Terafumos Team: AG Systems Weapons: Electrobolt, Mines, Missile, Quake, Rocket, Thunder Bomb, Shield Raider Bronze: Destroy 1 Silver: Destroy 3 Gold: Destroy 5 Comment: Getting the kills is easy. The hard thing here is to survive, so be careful and refill your energy after every lap. Weapon Challenge 4 ------------------ Track: Klies Bridge Team: Auricom Weapons: Rocket, Thunder Bomb, Energy Sphere Bronze: Destroy 1 Silver: Destroy 2 Gold: Destroy 4 Comment: Don't rely too much on the Energy Sphere because it rarely hits. The Thunder Bomb deals a lot of damage, too. Weapon Challenge 5 ------------------ Track: Sokana Team: Qirex Weapons: Electrobolt, Mines, Missile, Quake, Rocket, Thunder Bomb, Power Snare Bronze: Destroy 1 Silver: Destroy 2 Gold: Destroy 4 Weapon Challenge 6 ------------------ Track: Dyroness Team: Feisar Weapons: Missile, Quake, Rocket, Thunder Bomb Bronze: Destroy 1 Silver: Destroy 2 Gold: Destroy 4 Comment: On Phantom Class, homing weapons rarely hit so don't rely too much on them. Weapon Gold Challenge --------------------- Track: Klies Bridge Team: AG Systems Weapons: Cyclone activated Electrobolt, Mines, Missile, Quake, Rocket, Thunder Bomb, Shield Raider Gold: Destroy 6 Super Combo =-=-=-=-=-=-= (By the way, I've got the "bug" that you have to wait a while after finishing a challenge of this type. If you have this problem, too try holding down START and/or A for a while or spam these buttons. I don't know whether this actually works or whether this is just a placebo but it might help.) Super Combo Challenge 1 ----------------------- Track: Dyroness Team: AG Systems Weapons: Cyclone activated Electrobolt, Mines, Missile, Quake, Rocket, Thunder Bomb, Shield Raider Bronze: Finish 3rd, Destroy 1 Silver: Finish 2nd, Destroy 3 Gold: Finish 1st, Destroy 5 It's always 3rd/2nd/1st, so I'll leave it out then. Super Combo Challenge 2 ----------------------- Track: Sokana Team: Auricom Weapons: Cyclone activated Energy Sphere Bronze: Destroy 2 Silver: Destroy 3 Gold: Destroy 5 Super Combo Challenge 3 ----------------------- Track: Terafumos Team: AG Systems Weapons: Cyclone activated Shield Raider Bronze: Destroy 3 Silver: Destroy 5 Gold: Destroy 8 Comment: Does a Shield Raider really need Cyclone? However, this one is pretty difficult. Get every boost pad and use the Shield Raider when you are sure that it won't hit a wall. Use air brakes carefully at the last part. Super Combo Challenge 4 ----------------------- Track: Qoron IV Team: Feisar Weapons: Cyclone activated Electrobolt, Mines, Missile, Quake, Rocket, Thunder Bolt, Minigun Bronze: Destroy 2 Silver: Destroy 3 Gold: Destroy 5 Super Combo Challenge 5 ----------------------- Track: Machaon II Team: Qirex Weapons: Cyclone activated Power Snare Bronze: Destroy 3 Silver: Destroy 5 Gold: Destroy 8 Comment: *Insert lots of cursing words here* I'll cover this challenge in its own part. Super Combo Challenge 6 ----------------------- Track: Klies Bridge Team: Auricom Weapons: Cyclone activated Electrobolt, Missile, Quake, Rocket, Thunder Bomb Bronze: Destroy 2 Silver: Destroy 4 Gold: Destroy 6 Super Combo Gold Challenge -------------------------- Track: Velocitar Team: Piranha II Weapons: Cyclone activated Mines, Quake, Thunder Bomb, Stealth Gold: Destroy 4 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =============================== 04 - Super Combo Challenge #5 =============================== =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= "Psygnosis must have been in a psychotic mood when they designed this challenge." -Scorch "Win a race on the hardest track in the game on the highest speed at the controls of a flying brick, and kill 7 opponents with your only weapon being your superweapon which is great at slowing down opponents but does almost no damage" -Quoted from http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Wipeout Personally, I think that Psygnosis really messed this challenge up. tvtropes.org summarized it pretty well (although you have to kill 8 opponents, actually). I'll try to go into this challenge as detailed as possible. The really bad thing here is that the challenge is completely dependent on luck. You'll only need skill to get 1st but killing the 8 enemies is the big problem here. Everytime you shoot the Power Snare you have to hope that the victim is almost destroyed to get the kill. After reading this, you most likely won't do this at your first attempt. It's possible that you'll still need many, many attempts, maybe some days (like I needed) because it's so luck dependent. I really hope that this will save you some time and raise your chances at getting the gold award there. General Tips: =-=-=-=-=-=-= Learn to restart: ------------------ There are some situations where your chances at winning this challenge drop to almost zero, so you should know when it's not worth playing anymore and just restart. This will save lots of time. Such situations could be (in my view): -You're at the end of the 3rd lap and still 10th or worse -You're at the end of the 2nd lap and you haven't killed any opponents yet. -The enemy has already destroyed 4 other vehicles and you have only destroyed a few ones. -The difference between your kills and the enemy's is at least 4 (or maybe 3) -...(decide for yourself) Stay focused and keep calm: --------------------------- This could be said of every challenge but I just wanted to mention this here. If you see that you might win this challenge don't become careless or else you'll find yourself bumping into every wall possible and driving like a drunken monkey. This can be very frustrating. And as a matter of course: Drive over as many weapon and boost pads as you can. Practice a lot. You can do this in Time Trial Mode or in the countless attempts you'll need for this. PS: Power Snares do not stack and they delete each other. If you fire one where another one already is (it's not important on which side) the old one will be deleted. The strategies here are the ones I used. There might be better ones out there, be aware of that. ---------------------------------- Of course, you should use a fast start. (You can do this by holding the speedometer to almost maximum, try around to find out where the right spot is) Right after the start go to the right (it's okay if you bump into the AG Systems there, I managed to bump it to death once, but forget about that, it only happened once and I needed lots of attempts) and try to get the Weapon Pad. Fire the Power Snare (PS) immediately after you've driven over the pad. It should appear on the right side of the track (actually, you should immediately hear the typical sound). You need air brakes for this curve, of course. The enemy tends to drive on certain halves of the track. I'll show you how you should fire the PS as it only covers one half of the track: (but they don't ALWAYS drive on this half, be careful) The weapon pad (WP) after the first WP: Don't fire it immediately. Go to the left and fire it then. WP shortly after the ascent(on the left side): Fire it immediately. Shortly after the WP you'll find another WP (right side): Use the air brakes to get this sharp turn, fire it on the left side. WP in the "tunnel": Use air brakes to get these pretty sharp curves. You can fire it immediately or wait until you get out of the tunnel and then fire it. The CPU doesn't prefer any half here, as far as I know. WP after the tunnel (before the s-curve): Fire it immediately. Mostly, it's unavoidable if you do it correctly. Get the WP after that (left side) and fire the PS to the left side. It's almost a guaranteed hit. Use air brakes and get the next WP (right side). You can fire it immediately. (It should appear on the right side) Take the next WP (right after the checkpoint) and fire it to the left side. Don't forget to use the air brake. The next WP (before the 2nd tunnel) should be fired to the right side but it often happens that the enemy is too fast to get hit by the PS. Another way is to wait until you use the air brakes. You should use them very early. If you do it right the PS appears on the right side (right on the boost pads) and you get through the sharp curve without hearing the friction sound. I use the next WPs to fire PS alternately to the left and right side because the enemy doesn't prefer any half here, I think. Press down while you're flying to lower the speed loss and fire the last PS to the other side (depending on where you've fired the PS before). Well, that's pretty much it. Now you have to do this for 5 laps. Try not to bump into walls. If you're chasing the 1st Piranha II almost every PS will have to hit it if you want to overtake it. Sometimes you don't get any kills, sometimes you get 4 kills in 1 lap. It's completely luck dependent. Keep trying. Take a break if you feel that you have problems focusing on the game. If you see that sweat is making everything more difficult, well, you know what to do. Good luck. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ============== 05 - Credits ============== =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Thanks to: -You for reading this! -Scorch for helping me with his FAQ and the quote -tvtrope for the quote -GameFAQs for providing this great service! -Psygnosis and Midway for developing and publishing this great game! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ================= 06 - Conclusion ================= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= I hope you liked it.
