OVERVIEW G0300 =============================================================================== ESPN International Track & Field is a simple yet sometimes challenging game. You'll need to be good at hitting those buttons fast. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TECHNIQUE G0310 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- T&F is all about speed and button bashing. Best way to get good speeds up is to place the GameBoy on a hard surface where it doesn't move around. You need to have both hands available and cannot hold the device in your palms as you might want to. The power/speed button are A and B. With the other hand you need to keep on the D-pad to control whichever action is required for the specific event. Quite often it is possible to let go of the A & B button to press it, but not recommended for top results. Some people prefer to concentrate on the running/powering up first and quickly switch over to the other buttons, however this will surely result in a loss of power/speed. =============================================================================== 04.) MAIN MENU G0400 =============================================================================== The Main Menu is simple: 3 Options to choose from. Single Player has three more options: - First we have Trial Mode, where on can choose from any event in any order and compete a single time. - Second there is Championship. One is required to go through ten events at random order and gather points for an overall score. - Lastly you can see all the records listed. Versus mode is for playing against another real life person instead of just the CPU. Requires the Link Cable! OPTIONS: * Sound BGM Test Cycle through the music. * Data All Clear Clear all existing records, scores and medals. Only do this if you have a specific reason!! =============================================================================== 05.) EVENTS G0500 =============================================================================== The fun part of the guide: the events. There are 12 events in total. Not all are part of Track & Field or Athletics but are part of the Olympics. You need to unlock some of them before playing them in Trial Mode, and some are not available in Challenge Mode. In each event you can gain points, they are only useful in Arcade mode. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- High Jump G0501 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- High Jump: `````````` Default World Record: 2.45m Controls: A & B to run. D-Pad Up to jump. D-Pad Down to recover. You get three attempts to get the highest jump possible. First set the bar to the height, you cannot go lower than the previous jump. Start running as fast as you can and then push Up in front of the mat, as close as possible but not actually running through it. The gauge on the lower display will start going right in the air, press Down on the D-Pad as close to the red bar as possible to get over the bar. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 110m Hurdle G0502 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 110m Hurdle: ```````````` Default World Record: 12.91 sec Controls: A & B to run. D-Pad Up to jump. Start running when the GO! appears and keep it up. When the hurdles are close jump over them with the Up direction. You should be fairly close, but not too close. This is hard to describe and you will unfortunately need to get a feel for the distance yourself. Remember, 2 false starts and you are disqualified! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Javeling Throw G0503 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Javeling Throw: ``````````````` Default World Record: 98.48m Controls: A & B to run. D-Pad Up to set the throw angle. You have three attempts to throw as far as you can. Start by running as fast as you can, and then when the angle display shows up, wait a second longer and press Up until the mark hits 45-degrees or as close as you can to that number. Your athlete should only throw it at the end of the runway, but don't forget he will be forced forward a few more meters due to the velocity of the run. Therefore leave enough room for that, and don't set the angle too early. If you run at a very high speed then this would mean you should start just after the camera man at the top appears in view. For other speeds you will have to adjust accordingly. Either way, if you throw it too late the athlete will step over the line, resulting in a foul. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 100m Freestyle G0504 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 100m Freestyle: ``````````````` Default World Record: 53.01 sec Controls: A & B to swim. D-Pad Down to turn. Wait for the signal and press a button to dive. Then you need to time the A and B button hits with the blue bars that mean a perfect stroke. Hitting it too early or late means slowing down. At the end of the lane, press Down to turn as soon as the arrow appears. Remember, 2 fault starts and you are disqualified! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vault G0505 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vault: `````` Controls: A & B to build up power, land. D-Pad to input command. There are two attemps and the average will count as the final score. First start running as fast as you can, as the bar with the letters will determine the difficulty of the jump. Higher difficulty means higher score, because you do not want to end up with a 7+ score because you were too slow, do you? Try to get into the E area before she reachers the block. Then when the difficulty is set, wait for the command to appear and enter it as quickly as possible. C is a 3, D a 4 and E a 5 directional input. The speed you enter the command is also important for the final score. Finally, press the A/B button at the red bar to get top marks for the landing as well. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Long Jump G0506 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Long Jump: `````````` Default World Record: 8.95m Controls: A & B to run. D-Pad up to angle the jump. You get 3 attempts to get the longest jump. Run as fast as possible up to the jump block, press Up on the D-Pad until the angle is as close to 45-degrees as possible and let go so the athlete jumps. The closer to the line the further he will jump as well, but crossing the line during a jump is a foul. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pole Vault G0507 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pole Vault: ``````````` Default World Record: 6.14m Controls: A & B to run. D-Pad Up to jump and release. You have three attempts for the highest possible jump. First set the bar at your desired height. The start running as fast as possible. When the pole is planted, the red gauge starts going right, push Up to at the rightmost position on the bar possible to get a high jump, but not too late. Then the blue gauge will go left, hit the Up button as close to the left as possible to release. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Weight Lifting G0508 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Weight Lifting: ``````````````` Default World Record: 260kg Controls: A & B to build up power. D-Pad Up to lift. You have three attempts to life the heaviest amount you can. There is a 60 second time limit to perform a lift. First select the barbell weight as desired and then start powering up. When the power bar has cleared the first level, press Up to lift the weights on the shoulders. Do the same again to stand up with the weights, only this time the level is higher. Finally, reach the new level and keep over it for three seconds to succesfully raise the weights over your head. The three red lights signal if you are done. You cannot go under the level once you start lifting, and the maximum amount of weights require you to keep it at maximum for the entire time! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trap Shooting G0509 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trap Shooting: `````````````` Default World Record: 1350pts Controls: D-Pad: Aim to cursor. A-Button: Shoot. You have 60 seconds to shoot as many traps as possible. They start coming out as two, hit them both and there will be an additional one in the next turn. This means if you always hit them there will be a maximum of 6 traps flying through in a turn, and you have exactly six shots. Miss one trap and next turn will reduce the traps by that number, but there will always be 2 at minimum. There are two kind of color traps, pink color give 10 points where as blue ones 50. If you hit all discs during a round, you also get a special rating: 2/2 Good: 10 points 3/3 Great: 15 points 4/4 Fantastic: 25 points 5/5 Awesome: 50 points 6/6 Excellent: 100 points ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 100m Dash G0510 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 100m Dash: `````````` Default World Record: 9sec79 Controls: A & B to run. The easiest event of all, simply wait for the GO and start hitting those buttons. That is it. The competition is pretty good, especially when it comes to the start. Remember not to make more than one false start or you will be disqualified! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fencing G0511 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fencing: ```````` Controls: A to Attack. D-Pad Right / Left to Move D-Pad Up / Down to Defend. A bout lasts 99 seconds. The person with the highest score at the end wins. If anyone hits 10 points before that they automatically win as well. Move the fighter right and left on the podium. The figher will automatically defend the middle if no button is pressed, and up and down with the D-Pad. Use these buttons with the A button to attack higher or lower. A cheap tactic to use, when ahead in points you can simply hold back and walk into the red area to reset the bout in the middle. This wastes time and the other fighter usually does not reach you in time, but no not take this for granted. Why this works most of time is because the CPU fighter will often just wait on her side doing pretty much doing as well. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Table Tennis G0512 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Table Tennis: ````````````` Controls: Use A to swing the racket. The bar on the left controls the swing power. In the blue parts you will miss the ball completely or maybe just the net Not pressing A at all or too late obviously does not do any good either. The green bars make a solid return, usually resulting in a long exchange between the other player. Yellow is a weak return, giving the other person a chance to smash easily. The red bar is the smash itself. During play the bars change slightly, depending on what kind of return the player makes. Green returns do not change the bars, yellow returns, however, increase the other player's smash bar (red) whereas a smash return simply makes the bar and of course the ball go faster, meaning you need to be quicker to return that ball. The faster reaction time makes it harder to hit a good return ball. You need to win three matches for a gold medal. The first to get to 10 points in a match wins, regardless of how many points different. In other words, forget the 2 point difference you are used to playing in reality, as the 10 point goal is all you need to think about. =============================================================================== 06.) TRIAL MODE G0600 =============================================================================== Select one of the eleven events and compete in it once. Afterwards you will get the choice to continue playing it, select another event or return to the main title. During an event, press START to pause. Use continue or restart if you want to begin all over. =============================================================================== 07.) CHAMPIONSHIP MODE G0700 =============================================================================== Championship mode takes you through ten events in random order. Each event's points will be accumulated for a final overall score you compete with against the CPU. Therefore if you are very good in one event you can get an advantage, and balance out an event you are less good at. Fencing and Table Tennis are not part of the Championship mode. Qualifying score: ````````````````` Vault: 9.25pts Long Jump: 6.50m High Jump: 1.85m Weight Lifting: 170kg Trap Shooting: 800pts Pole Vault: 4.50m 100m Freestyle: 1:05.00sec 110m Hurdle 16.00sec Javelin Throw: 70.00m 100m Dash: 12.50sec =============================================================================== 08.) VERSUS MODE G0800 =============================================================================== Versus mode makes use of the Gameboy's Link Cable. Connect the two Gameboys together and select "Versus" from the main menu. You can now compete against another person and it is a lot more fun than just the CPU. =============================================================================== 09.) POINT FORMULAE G0900 =============================================================================== All events give you points. Below are some of the higest and lowest points to achieve, as well as the formula to calculate the rest of the results. ¬ denotes the highest and lowest end of the scores have been reached. Faster, longer / slower, shorter results than those will simply result in the same amount of points before/after the ¬. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- High Jump G0901 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Score: Points: ----------------------------- ¬ 2.80 1830 2.75 1760 2.70 1690 2.65 1620 2.60 1550 ... ... 2.05 780 2.00 710 1.95 640 1.90 570 1.85 500 ¬ ((Score - 185) * 14) + 500 = Points ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 110m Hurdle G0902 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Score: Points: ----------------------------- ¬ 11.60 1820 11.70 1790 11.80 1760 <-highest possible score 11.90 1730 12.00 1700 ... ... 15.60 620 15.70 590 15.80 560 15.90 530 16.00 500 ¬ ((Score - 1600) * -3) + 500 = Points ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Javelin Throw G0903 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Score: Points: ----------------------------- ¬ 105.00 1550 104.00 1520 103.00 1490 102.00 1460 101.00 1430 ... ... 74.00 620 73.00 590 72.00 560 71.00 530 70.00 500 ¬ ((Score - 7000) * 0.3) + 500 = Points ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 100m Freestyle G0904 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Score: Points: ----------------------------- ¬ ? 52.00 1540 52.50 1500 53.00 1460 53.50 1420 54.00 1380 ... ... 1:03.00 660 1:03.50 620 1:04.00 580 1:04.50 540 1:05.00 500 ¬ Over 1 minute: ((Score - 10500) * -0.8) + 500 = Points Below 1 minute: ((Score - 6000) * -0.8) + 900 = Points ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vault G0905 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Score: Points: ----------------------------- ¬ 10.00 1750 9.97 1700 9.94 1650 9.91 1600 9.88 1550 ... ... 9.37 700 9.34 650 9.31 600 9.28 550 9.25 500 ¬ ((Score - 925) * (50/3) + 500 = Points ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Long Jump G0906 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Score: Points: ----------------------------- ¬ 9.25 1600 9.20 1580 9.15 1560 9.10 1540 9.05 1520 ... ... 6.70 580 6.65 560 6.60 540 6.55 520 6.50 500 ¬ ((Score - 650) * 4) + 500 = Points ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pole Vault G0907 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Score: Points: ----------------------------- ¬ 6.50 1700 6.45 1670 6.40 1640 6.35 1610 6.30 1580 ... ... 4.70 620 4.65 590 4.60 560 4.55 530 4.50 500 ¬ ((Score - 450) * 6) + 500 = Points ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Weight Lifting G0908 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Score: Points: ----------------------------- ¬ 300 1800 295 1750 290 1700 285 1650 280 1600 ... ... 190 700 185 650 180 600 175 550 170 500 ¬ ((Score - 170) * 10) + 500 = Points ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trap Shooting G0909 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Score: Points: ----------------------------- ¬ 1520 1580 1500 1550 1480 1520 1460 1490 1440 1460 ... ... 880 620 860 590 840 560 820 530 800 500 ¬ ((Score - 800) * 1.5) + 500 = Points ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 100m Dash G0910 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Score: Points: ----------------------------- ¬ 9.00 1550 9.10 1520 9.20 1490 9.30 1460 9.40 1430 9.50 1400 ... ... 12.10 620 12.20 590 12.30 560 12.40 530 12.50 500 ¬ ((Score - 1250) * -3) + 500 = Points =============================================================================== 10.) No, these are only for Trial and Versus. =============================================================================== YY.) MINI-REVIEW GYY00 =============================================================================== Gameplay: 8/10 Still the same old technique, and it is a little tiring that most events require maximum power. Even the older games have some "best level" to run at instead of just bashing the best possible way. The vault and swimming events make for a nice change, and the unlockable events are fun if not a little long. Sound: 9/10 Great great great. Music and sound effects both feature well and never get boring. Sounds might not seem important but the small shouts here, gun shots, error noises and what-not all make it come alive. The intro music might not be the best and the overall package a little boring after a long time, but spending most time on the events reduces this slight annoyance. Graphics: 9/10 The graphics are gorgeous, and superb for the Gameboy Color. Compared to the previous Track and Field this looks like from a different console. The color, 3D graphics and improved designs make for a huge difference. Overall: 8/10 A little dated gameplay with great graphics and sound makes this one a superb addition to the series. Unfortunately gameplay is the most important part of the game. =============================================================================== ZZ.)
