Bass Rush: ECOGEAR Power Worm Championship Contents 1.Introduction 2.Manual Translation 1.Introduction This game was released in Japan only in the year 2000, and was created by the Visco Corporation. Since 1982 they have created games for many systems including arcades, NES, N64 and Neo Geo. They have worked with Taito Sammy and Seta corporations. Since 2008 they have ceased video game production and now make slot machines for casinos. ECOGEAR is a sub brand of the Japanese fishing bait company Marukyu based in Saitama Prefecture. The company originally opened in 1910 selling silk reels in Nagano Prefecture. They began making fishing baits in 1967 and in the 70's they became the top bait brand in both the fresh and salt water fishing industry. In 2003 they began to make rods, slowly turning the company into a complete tackle business. In 2010 they expanded the business to the UK and from there, to the rest of Europe. The game has recreated 6 famous and well known fishing lakes in Japan including Lake Kawaguchi 河口湖 Lake Biwa 琵琶湖 Lake Kasumigaura 霞ヶ浦 Lake Kitaura 北浦 Ikehara Dam 池原ダーム Lake Nojiri 野尻湖 The game also includes many types of fish, and was praised for its realism at the time of release. Now it is a somewhat rare game and it is difficult to find a complete copy. It is also compatible with the Tsurikon 64, a Fishing Controller. According to the manual, the game contains 36 lures and 9 types of fish. The fish and lure introductions at the end of the manual are worth reading as they give you an idea of how to use the lures correctly, and where the fish will be hiding. I honestly don’t know much about fishing, but my father in law is an avid trout fisherman. When he gets time off from work he often goes up to the mountains to fish, even during the winter. According to him, the bass fishing boom of the 90s may or may not have been caused by the fishing tackle company Shima. They introduced bass into certain Japanese lakes in order to sell new types of lures. Since bass are not native to Japan, it was a sport that could only be done abroad. Bass were imported and offered up in restaurants, but it was thought that they did not compliment traditional Japanese recipes. The bass population has continued to thrive, eating small native Japanese fish. Although that boom has subsided, there are still a few bass fishermen continuing to catch and release these bass even today. I would like to thank Ozidual. Without his hard work, this guide would not have been possible. He has been tirelessly scanning and uploading Japanese N64 game manuals at extremely high quality. He is also assisting in many N64 translation projects and fixed the trophy glitch in Space Station Silicon Valley. I am very grateful for your efforts towards preserving video game history. Back of the box The reality of those fishing spots has been completely recreated! A real bass fishing game in collaboration with ECOGEAR! It is possible to combine hard and soft lures in up to 102 ways. Additionally the soft lures are complied from the ECOGEAR worm types that you are used to. More than 9 species of fish have been recreated in polygons including bass, gill, rainbow trout, and koi carp. Over 90 fishing spots at 6 places; Lake Kawaguchi, Lake Biwa, Lake Kasumigaura, Lake Kitaura, Ikehara Dam and Lake Nojiri have been faithfully recreated down to the underwater topography. You can not only enjoy lakeside fishing, but boat fishing too. You can choose from 2 modes, above water and underwater, the methods of playing are doubled!! Infinite enjoyment!! You can use various camera angles with the press of a single button. Don't miss the decisive moments you would never be able to see in real life! Furthermore, using the Tsurikon 64 you can experience the subtle sensations of catching a fish. 2.Manual Translation Controls Menu Controls 3D Stick – Move the cursor A Button – Confirm B Button – Cancel R Button – Show the lure explanation screen Before Casting 3D Stick left and Right – Move A Button – Decide where to cast B Button – Open the sub menu START Button – Pause On the preparing to cast screen 3D Stick left and Right – Move the casting cursor A Button – Decide the casting direction B Button – Stop preparing to cast START Button – Pause After Casting, Reeling, and Fighting 3D Stick – Control the rod A Button – Reel the line in slowly B Button – Reel the line in to stop casting C Down – Reel the line in at normal speed C Right – Reel the line in at high speed R Button – Turn the camera lens on or off (underwater camera only) START Button – Pause Z Trigger – Change the camera position (Underwater camera only) Depending on how you reel the line and how you move the rod at the same time, various types of lure action/movement are possible. When this modes starts you can choose between the records from Free Fishing mode or Tournament Mode. If you select a fish and press the A Button information about where and how you caught the fish will be displayed. Options (For some reason the options menu is in English. So all the old Japanese men who bought the manual had to refer to the translation that is given in the instruction manual. Why on earth did they do this? Maybe they thought it looks cooler? If you set the View Volume to Wide it is much easier to find fish, although the fighting part of the game will look less impressive.) Tension Gage – Turn the line tension gauge on or off. Vibration – Turn the rumble pak on or off. View Volume – Change the angle of the underwater camera from. Sound – Choose between Mono and Stereo Clear Record Data – Clear all your in game records. About the game screen Before Casting Your current lure is shown in the top right, the time is shown in the top left. Preparing to Cast The casting cursor will be shown on the lake, and the lure throwing distance power gauge will be displayed on the right. After Casting The line tension gauge will be displayed at the top of the screen. The line distance will be displayed at the bottom right along with the lure depth. In the bottom left the camera lens type will be displayed. How to Cast First choose a casting location by moving the 3D Stick left and right and pressing the A Button. Then choose a casting direction using the cursor. The method of throwing the lure changes depending on what controller you are using. With the normal N64 controller Once you have chosen the casting direction the power gauge will be displayed and it's cursor will begin moving. Match the amount of power you wish to use with the timing of your A Button press. Press the B Button if you wish to stop casting. With the Tsurikon 64 controller Once you have chosen a direction, the words CAST will be displayed. Shake the controller forward in order to cast the lure. You can adjust the flight of the lure based on how strongly you shake the controller. Press the B Button if you wish to stop casting. Casting Methods By pressing the A Button and using the 3D stick at the same time it is possible to cast in 3 different ways. When using the Tsurikon 64 hold it flat before casting. Depending on how strongly you shake it, the distance the lure flies will change. Overhand Casting – Just press the A Button This is the basic casting method, it throws the lure as far and as straight as possible. With the Tsurikon 64, shake it directly forward and down from a flat position. Sidehand Casting – Push the 3D stick right and press the A Button at the same time. Used when you want to throw the lure a short distance. It is effective when you want to sink the lure under an underwater obstruction. With the Tsurikon 64, shake it parallel to the waters surface (left or right) and down. Underhand Casting – Push the 3D stick down and press the A Button at the same time. Used when you want to throw the lure accurately to a place very close to your fishing position. With the Tsurikon 64, whilst holding the A Button, shake the Tsurikon 64 down. Thumbing – Adjusting the distance of the lure throw After casting but before the lure hits the water, press the A Button to adjust the lure's distance. It is an effective thing to do when you throw the lure too far. How to hook fish Depending on how you move the lure it will be easier or harder to hook fish. The faster you hook the fish to the lure, the harder it is for them to escape. Depending on which camera you use, the timing will be different Underwater Camera As soon as the fish takes the lure into their mouth immediately pull the rod up. Above water Camera In response to the changes of the tension gauge pull immediately pull the rod up at the right time. You can also turn the tension gauge off in the options, in this case you should pull the rod up when the lure icon at the top left of the screen shakes. You can also judge the timing using the vibrations of the rumble pak if you are using it. How to hook fish with the Tsurikon 64 When a fish bites the lure the Tsurikon 64 will vibrate. (The direction of the vibration does not indicate anything). Then if you successfully hook the fish, “Fish!!” will be displayed on the screen. The colour of the text indicates the success of the hook. Red – Your timing was perfect. It is hard for the first to escape. Yellow – Your timing was a bit slow. Blue – Your timing was slow. It is easy for the fish to escape. The large the fish is, the less time you will have to hook them after they bite the lure. It is also harder to make them bite the lure in the first place. Bass Fighting After you have hooked the fish, Fish!! will be displayed on screen and the fight to land them will start. How to reel in a fish during a fight You must reel in the first whilst looking at the tension gauge and be careful that the line does not break. When the tension gauge reaches the max level a warning will be displayed (ラインが切れそう!!) and a warning sound will play. The Drag function will automatically release the fish in order to prevent the line from braking. If the tension gauge reaches max the reeling in will stop. If you try to keep reeling in the fish whilst the drag function is working the line will brake. If the tension gauge gets too low a warning will be displayed (ラインを巻いて!) and a sound will play. If the line tension is too low the fish will be able to unhook itself from the lure. How to use the rod during a fight Obey the onscreen instructions on how to move the rod. If you do not, then it will be easy for the fish to unhook itself from the lure. The instructions are show with an arrow so push the 3D Stick in the indicated direction as fast as possible. After fighting with the fish for some time you will eventually be able to land it, and a cut scene will play. The cutscene will show the type of fish, it's weight and length. During a tournament you will be given the option to keep the fish in your fishing tank. You can only keep up to 5 fish and they must be longer than 30cm. If you have too many fish in your fishing tank you can choose to exchange the fish you just caught for one in the tank using the 3D Stick and the A Button. Lure Techniques and Effectiveness Table Depending on how you move the rod when you reel the line in the lure will be more or less appealing to fish. Technique 1 Reeling Done by reeling in the line at normal speed. Deepening on the lure, its normal reeling in movement may be effective. Technique 2 Pausing Done by pausing the reeling in occasionally. It is effective because stopping the movement of the lure will make it easier for fish to aim for it. Also, sinking type lures are effective when used with a falling like movement around places such as piers and pontoons. Technique 3 Rod Action This is done by moving the 3D Stick in different directions to make the lure move. This trick is done whilst reeling the line in, but try not to let the line get too slack. Technique 4 Slapping This is done by making the lure hit underwater structures such as boulders. Hitting structures with some lures make them look more appealing to fish. It is effective with sinking and pulling type lures. The above techniques will not be effective with every lure type. Look at the lure technique table below to check the effectiveness of each lure type. Enjoy trying out each of the techniques and lures to find the one that suits you the most. This table displays how effective each lure is at attracting fish based on the type of reeling. I have left the names of the lures in Japanese so that they are easier to choose in game. I have separated them by type. To save you time here are the best combinations for each lure. Of course, depending on what fish you want to catch you should use different lures. Game Advice Pay attention to splashes on the waters surface! Sometimes splashes of water will appear on the waters surface. This is caused by fish trying to escape from bass coming close to the waters surface and is called “Bait flash”. When this phenomenon occurs, try casting you line to that location. Bass will certainly be near that location. Pay attention to the on screen instructions! When a fight starts, on screen instructions to the player will appear on screen. Obey those instructions. If you do not, your line may break or the fish may escape from your hook. Aim for obstructions! Black bass have a habit of living near underwater obstructions, such as the edges of piers, pontoons, and stakes. Aim to thoroughly investigate these places if you can see them from the top of the water. When you can't find fish... If you can't find any fish at a certain point even after trying countless times, move to a different point. Bass will certainly appear if you cast at many different points. Be careful of changes in seasons and times of day! Depending on the time of day and season, the places the bass in inhabit will change. Normally in Spring and Autumn, from morning to night, bass will be shallow places. At moon hey will briefly move to deep waters. In Summer from morning to night they be in comparatively shallow places. At noon they will move to deep waters. Then in winter they will often stay in deep places. Of course their behavior will change, but remember these habits when choosing your lures. How to win the Tournaments... You cannot win the tournaments without thinking about how to play. First, in free fishing mode investigate each fishing point many times. Work out which lure is effective at which point. It is necessary to research what the fish will do at each location depending on the time of day and season. Also if you catch many fish from the same point then the other fish will become scared of that location, this is especially true of big fish. After catching many fish at one location, move to another. Lake Introductions Lake Kawaguchi 河口湖 A dark lake where the solitary outlines of Bass and Rainbow Trout which are periodically released here can be seen.
