Memory Clear To clear the cartridge's saved memory, while on the Title Screen hold down *, Option, and #. ******************************************************************************* III. How to Play ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A. Object of the Game The object of the game is to match the colored tiles with the pattern on the floor. The trick is that there is one more tile than space, so you must perform a juggling act. If the extra tile lands before you finish the puzzle, then you lose! There is NO time limit and you have unlimited chances to solve each puzzle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Flipping You flip a tile by selecting it with your cursor using the joypad, then pressing one of the fire buttons (A, B, or C). It will land in the space under the next tile you flip. For example, if you flip tiles A, B, and C, tile A will land where tile B was and tile B will land where tile C was. If you don't flip anymore tiles, tile C will then crash and you'll lose the puzzle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. Controls Joypad Move the cursor A Button Flip current tile B Button Flip current tile C Button Flip current tile Option Bring up Options Screen Pause Pause the game ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D. Options ............................................................................... 1. Master Volume Choose this to adjust the volume level by pressing left/right on the joypad. Press the fire button when you are done. ............................................................................... 2. Music Volume Choose this to adjust the music volume by pressing left/right on the joypad. Use the joypad to input your initials, then press the fire button when you are done. ............................................................................... 4. Load Game Choose this to load a previously saved game. After selecting the game you want, you'll be asked to choose a difficulty level. ............................................................................... 5. Exit Options Select Exit Options to return to the puzzle. ............................................................................... 6. Exit to Map Choose Exit to Map to go to the Map Screen. While on the Map Screen, press up/down on the joypad to choose a location then press the fire button to select. You can only go to locations that have been unlocked. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E. Difficulty Levels Note: The ending is the exact same for all four difficulty levels! ............................................................................... 1. Normal This is the default difficulty. ............................................................................... 2. Hard In Hard, the tiles on the ground will all be the same color. You'll only be able to see their true colors will they are in the air. Note: Mt. Rushmore will play exactly as it did in Normal. ............................................................................... 3. Insane In Insane, the tiles will ALWAYS be the same color. When a tile lands in the proper place, it will continuously flash. The only way to figure out which tile goes where is by trial and error. Note: Mt. Rushmore will play exactly as it did in Normal. ............................................................................... 4. Psychotic In Psychotic, the tiles will always be the same color just like the Insane difficulty. The difference is that after they land in the correct spot, they will only flash for about a second then STOP. You'll have to remember where the correctly placed tiles are, this becomes next to impossible when the other characters start to mess with your tiles! Note: This is the only difficulty level that affects Mt. Rushmore! ******************************************************************************* IV. Characters ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A. Spectators Spectators have green skin and will wander onto the playing field on certain levels. They will never interfere with your tiles, so you really don't have to pay any attention to them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. The Rodeo Rider The Rodeo Rider has red skin and is easily identified by his cowboy hat and his yelling "Yee Haw!" when he grabs a tile. Once he grabs onto a tile, you'll be unable to flip it. In order to buck him off the tile, select his tile with the cursor and press the fire button repeatedly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. The Red Baron The Red Baron is actually purple and wears a scarf. When in the air he will make a noise like an airplane propeller. The Red Baron will hop onto the playing field and act as one of the tiles. This forces you to keep TWO tiles in the air instead of the usual one. This messes up the gameplay mechanics somewhat. For example, if you flip tiles A, B, and C, tile A will land in tile C's place instead of tile B's. You can flip the Red Baron in the air just like a tile, after a few flips, he'll get bored and return to the sidelines. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- D. The Tile Eater The Tile Eater is red and shaped like a tile. He'll wander onto the playing field and gobble up a tile. He can be flipped just like a regular tile, after a few flips, he'll spit out his tile and return to the sidelines. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E. The Cursor Decoy The Cursor Decoy looks just like your cursor. He will move around the playing field, flipping tiles. You can flip him off the board by moving your cursor to the same tile he's on and pressing the fire button. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- F. The Tile Flipper The Tile Flipper is red and acts like the Cursor Decoy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- G. Gooey Gooey looks like his name. He will jump on the board and act in a manner similar to the Red Baron, the only difference is that you CANNOT flip him with your cursor. All you can do is wait for him to get bored and return to the sideline. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- H. Corky Corky will only appear in Yellowstone National Park. He likes to wander around the playing field, stuffing his head into the geysers. To get him out, select his geyser with your cursor and repeatedly press the fire button. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I. Graffiti Master and The Janitor Graffiti Master and the Janitor only appear at Mt. Rushmore. The Graffiti Master will fly around spray painting the face pieces. Once a piece has been painted, you'll have to wait for the Janitor to clean it before you can flip it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- J. Sluggy Sluggy looks like, well a slug. He only appears in the Sphorkle Diner. He'll jump onto the tables, preventing you from flipping that table's food. If you attempt to flip him off, he'll only stay longer, so it's best just to ignore him and wait for him to hop off the table on his own. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- K. The Wizard The Wizard only appears on Easter Island. He has two different types of magic. First he can cast a spell that freezes some tiles. While a tile is frozen, it cannot be flipped. To unfreeze a tile, select it with your cursor and press the fire button repeatedly. His other trick is to change all the tiles to the same color. You'll only be able to see their true color while they are being flipped. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- L. Space Slime Space Slime will only appear in the Zero Gravity Arena. He is second only to King Fluffy in sheer annoyance. Space Slime will descend onto the playing field, then move around, flipping tiles as he goes. If you don't dispatch him quickly, he will completely undo all of your hard work! To get rid of him, move your cursor to the tile he's on and press the fire button. He usually descends down the middle of the screen and lands on the middle tile on the bottom. As soon as you see him, make your way there and flip him off as soon as possible! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- M. King Fluffy King Fluffy is the ruler of the Cheese Planet and the final boss in the game. He's the guy standing in the background of every stage and uses his magic to flip the tiles to start each puzzle. King Fluffy has three magical attacks. He can freeze tiles and change their colors just like the wizard. He can also flip tiles as well. The best way to deal with him is to work fast! ******************************************************************************* V. Locations Note: All puzzle "solutions" listed here are the same for all four difficulty levels. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A. Cheese Planet ............................................................................... 1. Overview You begin your game by competing in the Great Tile Flipping Festival on the Cheese Planet. This is basically a tutorial level to help ease you into the gameplay. The object is to match the colored tiles with the pattern on the floor. About the fifth puzzle on, spectators will wander onto the playing field. They won't actually interfere with gameplay so you can just ignore them. It's also interesting to note that the Cheese Planet is the only location where the solution configuration is different for each puzzle. ............................................................................... 2. Yellowstone National Park ............................................................................... 1. Overview While it may look different at first glance, gameplay is the exact same as before, just match the alien with the geyser of the same color. The geyser configuration is the same for all five puzzles. You'll notice that there are two yellow aliens, if you look closely you'll notice that the "extra" one is wearing red water wings. You'll have to deal with Corky here, he'll stick his head in a geyser, hampering your progress. To get him out of a geyser, select him with your cursor and press the fire button repeatedly. ............................................................................... 2. Mt. Rushmore ............................................................................... 1. Overview Here the goal is to unscramble the faces on Mt. Rushmore. The Graffiti Master and Janitor will appear here. The Graffiti Master will fly around and spray paint pieces, once they've been painted, you can't flip them until they are cleaned by the Janitor. It's important to note that this level is not affected by the Hard and Insane difficulty levels! On Psychotic, the pieces will still look normal, but now only flash for a second once they are properly placed. ............................................................................... 2. Sphorkle Diner ............................................................................... 1. Overview Sphorkle Diner is very similar to Yellowstone, except instead of matching aliens and geysers, it's aliens and food. Sluggy is the adversary here, he will climb onto a table and you won't be able to flip the food there until he hops off. If you try to flip Sluggy off the table, it just makes him sit there longer, so it's best just to ignore him and move on until he moves. ............................................................................... 2. Puzzles 1-5 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | | | | | | | Orange| | Yellow| | White | | | | | | | |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | | | | | Purple| | Red | | | | | |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | | | | | Green | | Blue | | | | | |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- E. Easter Island ............................................................................... 1. Overview Finally, back to flipping tiles! Easter Island is pretty much the same as the Cheese Planet, with the statues adding a new wrinkle to the gameplay. The top row of tiles is inside the mouths of the statues. You CANNOT move your cursor from statue to statue and you can only enter/exit a statue when its mouth is open. If you get trapped inside, don't panic! Just keep flipping the tiles until the mouth opens and you can escape. I strongly recommend matching the tiles in the statues first, then moving on to the rest of the grid. The Wizard will appear here to cause trouble. He has two magical attacks. He can freeze some tiles, while they are frozen, they cannot be flipped. To unfreeze a tile, select it with your cursor and repeatedly press the fire button. He can also change the tile colors, you will only be able to see a tiles true color while it is in the air. ............................................................................... 2. Puzzles 1-4 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | | | | | | | | | Dark | | Pink | | Purple| | White | | Blue | | | | | | | |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | | | | | | | Light | | Yellow| | Red | | Blue | | | | | |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | | | | | | | Dark | | Orange| | Light | | Green | | | | Green | |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- F. Hoopla World ............................................................................... 1. Overview Hoopla World is just like the Cheese Planet, the only difference is the advent of competitors. The Red Baron, Tile Eater, and others will appear to prevent you from solving the puzzles. Be sure to check the Characters section to learn how to deal with them effectively. ............................................................................... 2. Puzzles 1-10 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | | | | | | | | | Dark | | Dark | | Pink | | White | | Green | | Blue | | | | | |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | | | | | | | Light | | Yellow| | Red | | Blue | | | | | |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | | | | | | | Purple| | Orange| | Light | | | | | | Green | |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- G. Planet Pigskin ............................................................................... 1. Overview Planet Pigskin is just like Hoopla World (even has the same tile layout!), the competitors will just be more aggressive than before. ............................................................................... 2. Puzzles 1-10 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | | | | | | | | | Dark | | Dark | | Pink | | White | | Green | | Blue | | | | | |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | | | | | | | Light | | Yellow| | Red | | Blue | | | | | |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | | | | | | | Purple| | Orange| | Light | | | | | | Green | |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| |_ _ _ _| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- H. Zero Gravity Arena ............................................................................... 1. Overview Now it's getting complicated! You will have THREE grids to solve here, on top of that, the dreaded Space Slime haunts this area. The Space Slime will appear and quickly move across the grids, flipping tiles as it goes. To get rid of the Space Slime, move your cursor to the tile he's on and press the fire button. Be sure to take care of him quickly, he can do a LOT of damage in a hurry. He will usually land on the center square of the bottom grid, so as soon as you see him, head there right away! ............................................................................... 2. King Fluffy Encounter ............................................................................... 1. Overview Note: Be sure to save your game BEFORE the battle with King Fluffy. This is it, the final battle. King Fluffy is a very tough competitor, not only can he freeze and color tiles like the Wizard, he can affect more of them at once. He is also capable of flipping your tiles, undoing a lot of your hard work! There's no trick to beating him, you just have to work hard and fast! Once you beat King Fluffy, you'll see a brief ending and then be asked to input your initials for the high score. You'll then be taken to the high score table, you'll be stuck here, the only thing you can do is turn off the power (your score will already be saved). ............................................................................... 2. Secrets and Cheats I got the following cheats from www.ataritimes.com: Note: These cheats are VERY fickle, you have to time them just right for them to work! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A. Skip Puzzle To skip the current puzzle press 7, 7, 9, 8, 8, 9, # on the number pad BEFORE King Fluffy flips the tiles. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Unlock All Locations To unlock all the locations on the Map Screen input 7, 7, 9, 8, 8, 9, 9 on the number pad while you're on the Map Screen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C. See Programmers' Heads Press 1, 4, 2, 8, 3, 7, 2, 2 BEFORE King Fluffy flips the tiles on any puzzle with the three alien cheerleaders to see the game programmers' heads. Note: I've never gotten this one to work, but since I had so much trouble getting the first two codes to work, I have no idea if this code is real or a hoax. ******************************************************************************* VII. Game Review Flip Out! has a reputation of being one of the worst games for the Atari Jaguar, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that I actually ENJOY playing it! It's a very simple puzzle game, the object is to match colored tiles with the pattern on the floor. The trick is that there is one more tile than available spaces, so you must perform a juggling act while solving. The main gripe that I have with this game is that it is WAY too easy. There are four difficulty levels, these operate by concealing the colors of the tiles to various degrees. The second and third levels aren't really that much more challenging than the first, just a bit more trial and error involved. The fourth level is completely unplayable, there's no skill involved, just pure luck! Overall, Flip Out! is a fun, albeit short game that every Jaguar fan should give a chance. Pros + Very easy for anyone to pick up and play. + While the graphics are 16-bit caliber, they still look great. + Four difficulty levels to choose from. + Game saves your progress and high scores. Cons - You'll finish this one in a single afternoon. - No multiplayer. ******************************************************************************* VIII.
