I think I've played all of the Disney games on Genesis and Pocahontas was the last I played. It also was the best one, in both graphics/music and gameplay. It was a pretty good surprise. Story Pocahontas and her tribe lived peacefully in the forest of North America until the men from England came to "steal" their land. The chief of the tribe, Pocahontas' father, send her to spy on the newcomers to see what they are up to. Pocahontas is helped by her friends; Meeko the raccoon and Flit the hummingbird. She leaves her village and go through the forest with her animal friends. On her way she meets one of the English men, John Smith and they fall in love with each other. Sadly, it's a forbidden love. The story line then expands after each levels and follow the story of the Disney movie. Graphics 10/10 The word that comes to my mind when I think about Pocahontas' graphics is the word pretty. The graphics were pretty and beautiful at the same time. The whole game may be in the forest of North America, but each level is different in a way or the other despite always in the same forest. What gave me this nice feeling while playing the game was the way I really felt like in a real forest. You know, leaves floating around in the air, swirling around you as you advance through the forest. Ducks swimming peacefully over the water and suddenly leaving the water and flying away. Rabbits running around on the ground as you pass next to them. Squirrels climbing around on tree branches. Birds chirping and flying around in the sky. Water quietly falling from a waterfall and sliding onto the rocks to the lake. Yes, there's all that in the game. You feel like in a real forest, lush and full of little details. All the animals move exactly like real animals and everything look beautiful -the trees, the grass, the rocks, the water, the sky-, really everything. It's hard to describe exactly how good the game looks, you'll have to see it for yourselves, and I really recommend you to do so. It's really worth it. The levels aren't very varied though, it's always in the forest but in some levels it's night, in others it's day, or before the sun rises, when the sky is orange. Some of the backgrounds are a little plain but considering how good the overall levels are, you won't even notice it. You can even see the shadows of the trees reflecting themselves into the lake's water. Very pretty and nice. The underwater was a little plain too, like there could have been a little more like seaweeds and more different fishes (though there's already some fishes and otters). The characters and animals were nice, from Meeko to John Smith and others but somehow, Pocahontas was very well animated, but looked a little like a man and that annoyed me a bit. I still think this game is one of the best looking on Genesis. Music/Sounds 9/10 The music and sounds were yet another aspect of the game I really liked. I'll start with the sounds, as they complete the nice visuals of the game. Here again, the sounds add to the feel of being in a real forest. You hear the birds chirping, the splash of the otters jumping in the water, the small animals moving in the bushes and the animals' cries. In fact, there were so many different sounds that I couldn't pay attention to all of them at the same time. The animals' sounds sounded like real animals' calls, you could hear Pocahontas running in the grass and the water falling from the waterfalls. Very nice sound effects. The music was awesome too, for the most part. The first level had music from the movie and it really fitted well the nice and peaceful look of the forest. It was catchy and added to the feel of the game. It sounded exactly like in the movie and that was great, considering there were tons of animals sounds at the same time, all that went in great harmony. The music on later levels didn't really caught into my mind, I was hearing it without really realizing it was playing so it wasn't special but fitted well the levels, I guess, seeing how I didn't really paid attention to it. The music is lower at night time and more catchy at day time, things like that. So all that seems to sound great, doesn't it ? Gameplay 9/10 Sweet. The gameplay is absolutely sweet. There're many reasons for it to be sweet and I'll tell you all about that. You play as Pocahontas, obviously, but you can also play as Meeko (the raccoon) and this adds a lot to the gameplay and is one of the best aspect of it. You can switch characters at any time through a level simply by pressing the C button. Meeko is the character that controls the best and that you'll like the most to play as. Meeko isn't one of these slow and blocky animal characters from other games, Meeko moves like a real raccoon. He runs fast, jump high and controls perfectly. You'll really feel like a raccoon running around in the forest... Meeko can climb up trees, pick up berries, enter small passageways, moves boulder and more. Pocahontas can do most of the things Meeko can do but she doesn't run and jump as well. In fact, switching characters isn't just an add to the gameplay. No, it's used to solve puzzles. The game is a kind of platfomer but filled with puzzles and you need the 2 characters to solve the puzzles and make your way to the end of a level. Pocahontas can't reach the ledge above ? Switch to Meeko and climb up the tree to get on the ledge. Push the boulder below so Pocahontas can climb. This is an example of how the 2 characters help each other. You always have to find a way to help each other get over some obstacles. Meeko can't swim so sometimes you have to find a way to make Meeko cross to the other side of the river. Are you gonna use that tree trunk floating over the water there ? The puzzles in this game are very clever for the most. Through the levels, Pocahontas has to find and rescue animals and receive their spirits. When she's awarded a spirit, she'll earn the animal's power. With the deer spirit, she can run. With the otter spirit, she can dive and swim. With the squirrel spirit, she can climb up trees. There are 9 animal spirits to get in total (deer, otter, bird, squirrel, fish, wolf, bear, owl and eagle) and 9 different powers to obtain through the levels. There are no real enemies in the game, all the animals are your friends but you can hurt yourself if you fall from tall cliffs and fall into gasps. The only enemies in the game are the English men but they kill you in one hit. There are 4 levels in total, but the game can be long because all the levels are long and some puzzles can take you quite some time to figure out. The last level has no puzzles, it's pretty linear, you run and jump over pits, using the animals powers you got from the spirits. Sometimes you have to pass tests to earn the spirits, like racing against the wolf or following the owl in the dark. There are a lot of hidden things in the levels, things you're not forced to get to complete the levels, but it's really nice to try and get them all by solving the puzzles. Meeko can find these 60 berries scattered through the levels and there's always a clever way to get them, it was really fun for me to explore all the levels and find all the secret passageways as Meeko. I couldn't say the game is easy, it's quite hard and you always have think about what to do but nothing is really difficult either. The game is entertaining and you won't stay stuck on any puzzle. It's not a game I'll replay before long, but it was a really enjoyable experience through the nature and I hope you'll give it a try someday. Overall 9/10 This game isn't kiddy in any way, even if it's starring Pocahontas. If you like nature and puzzles, this is definitively for you. I'm sure if the game was longer and didn't feature Pocahontas, more people would have been interested in it. She's from the Amerindian tribe. Meeko : He's Pocahontas' friend, a joyful raccoon. You can play as him too by pressing C on the controller. John Smith : One of the English men. He and Pocahontas are in love. Ratcliffe : The leader of the English men. He's the bad guy. Kocoum : He was choosen to marry Pocahontas but she doesn't like him. ______ Items Animal Spirits : There are 9 animal spirits to collect and each gives you a different power. Berries : Only Meeko can get them. There are 60 to collect in total. Feathers : With these, Pocahontas can use the Bird's spirit power, she can have 4 at a time. Leaves : You start the game with a certain number of leaves. If you get hurt, you loose 1 leaf. If you loose them all, the game's over. Pile of leaves : If you step in a pile of leaves, the next time you die, you will start back at this point of the game. Necklaces : There are 5 necklaces to collect in total. ___________ Mouvements Switching characters : You can switch characters from Pocahontas to Meeko by pressing the C button. Running/Sprinting : After you got the Deer Spirit, press A while walking to start running. Press A again to start sprinting. Diving/Swimming : After you got the Otter Spirit, jump from a high cliff to dive. You can then swim too. Swimming faster : After you got the Fish Spirit, press A while swimming to start swimming faster. Climbing : After you got the Squirrel Spirit, jump toward a tree branch to grab it. You can now climb up trees like that. Gliding : After you got the Bird Spirit, collect a feather and jump from a high cliff. Press A while falling to start floating in the air and land safely on the ground. Sneaking : After you got the Wolf Spirit, press DOWN and LEFT or RIGHT on the controller to sneak under/behind bushes. _______________ Animal Spirits Deer : Allow you to run/sprint. Otter : Allow you to dive/swim. Bird : Allow you to fall from heights. Squirrel : Allow you to climb. Fish : Allow you to swim faster. Wolf : Allow you to sneak. Bear : Allow you to afraid settlers. Stand below it and press C to switch to Meeko. As Meeko, jump on the tree trunk next to the cliff and climb it up. If you climb to the top and jump to the left of the first trunk, you'll get a berry (1). Go on the cliff and push the boulder below, to the left where Pocahontas is standing. Switch back to Pocahontas and push the boulder against the rock face. Get on the boulder and jump to grab the edge of the cliff above. Stand next to the next cliff and switch back to Meeko. Jump on Pocahontas' arms to reach the cliff above. Jump to the left to get another berry (2). Still as Meeko, return on the cliff and go on the wooden footbridge. Jump on it and you'll fall below. Go to the left in the small opening in the wall to get a berry (3). Now go up and run to the very right, past the rabbit, at the cliff's edge. There'll be a berry above you but you can't reach it. Wait there. Switch back to Pocahontas and go to where Meeko is waiting for you. Stand below the berry and switch to Meeko. As Meeko, jump on Pocahontas' arms to reach the berry (4). Still as Meeko, use Pocahontas' arms to reach to high cliff to the left. Don't go in the passageway, jump on the rock above. Go at the left edge and jump to the left to reach a berry (5) behind a tree trunk. Switch back to Pocahontas and jump to grab to cliff to the left. Jump on the rock above the passageway and continue to the left until you come to a deer. Press A next to him to free him from the bush. You'll receive the Spirit of the Deer. You can now run faster (by pressing A while walking) and jump further. Go back down where the rabbit is. At one place, there are two cliffs one over the other. You can jump down from the cliff above. Stay there. Switch to Meeko and go to where Pocahontas is. Go to the very right inside the opening in the rock face. You'll find another berry (6). Still as Meeko, go back up and now go to the very left. Drop down and follow the way down the river to the very right. You'll come to 2 otters and a boulder. Above the water in a berry (7), jump to reach it. Meeko will swim back to the edge. Now switch back to Pocahontas. As Pocahontas, go to the very left. You'll come to another wooden footbridge. If you walk on it, you'll fall so you have to run on it if you want to cross it. Run by pressing A using the power of the spirit of the deer. Go to where Meeko is and push the boulder in the water. You'll receive the Spirit of the Otter. You can now dive and swim in the water. Now go on the cliff above the one you are now on. Jump from this cliff into the water and Pocahontas will dive into the water. You're now underwater. Go down and then left to find a necklace. Now go back to the very top of the mountain where you got berry 4 (see above). Jump from the cliff to your right to dive into the water. Go back to the water's surface. Swim to the right and you'll find a tree trunk floating over the water. Grab it and bring it back to the left where Meeko is waiting for you. Switch to Meeko and jump on the trunk. Switch back to Pocahontas and dive underwater to resurface at the other side of the trunk. Grab the trunk with Meeko on it and swim to the very right until you come to another edge. Switch to Meeko and jump on the edge. Push the boulder off the tree to reveal a small opening in the trunk. Go inside and you'll end up on a branch with a bird nest. Wait there. Switch back to Pocahontas and dive to the very bottom of the lake. Go to the right in the path and resurface of the water. You'll be at the other side of the island on which Meeko is on. Go on the island and the bird that was blocking the way of Meeko will now be at your side. Switch back to Meeko and go on the branch to pick up the berry (8). Still as Meeko, drop down of the branch to the right to where Pocahontas is. Switch back to Pocahontas and cross the lake to the right. The frog on the lily pad will move off and jump in the water. Switch back to Meeko and cross the lake by jumping on the lily pads. On your way you'll get another berry (9). Continue to the right until you come to two white tree trunks you can climb up. Climb to the very top of the tree and you'll find 3 berries (10, 11, 12). Jump to reach them all. Continue your way to the very right again until you com to more water and a small waterfall. Jump to reach the berry (13) over the water. Switch to Pocahontas. Go the right where the two trees Meeko climbed on are. Find a way to climb up the mountain. Once on top of the mountain, stand on the left edge and start running in direction of the right edge. At the edge, jump to the right, the farther you can. You should reach another cliff to your right. Climb on top of that mountain and you'll find a nest with a bird to the left. Kneel and press A to pick up the small bird. Take him to his nest to receive the Spirit of the Bird. You can now take long falls without being hurt by collecting feathers. Grab the two feathers on your right. You can test your new power and jump from the cliff to your right. You'll fall back safely on the ground below. Go to the left and push the dead trunk into the water. Switch back to Meeko and use the trunk to cross the water to where Pocahontas is. Still as Meeko, run to the very right and enter the opening in the rock face. You'll find another berry (14) there. Go up the other hole in the rock face and you'll end up on a cliff with a boulder. Push the boulder down to your left. Now go to the right, over the passageway, and to the end of the cliff, jump to reach the berry (15). Down the mountain, you can find another berry (16) behind a tree trunk. Switch back to Pocahontas and go to the right where the boulder is. Push it against the rock face and climb on it. Jump to grab the ledge above and climb on top of the mountain. Go down the mountain and to the very right. You'll come across Pocahontas' father. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Episode 2 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Now you play as Meeko in Pocahontas' village. Climb up the trunk to the left and get the berry (17). Climb some more to get 3 other berries (18, 19, 20) on the hut's roof. Jump in the hole in the roof and inside you'll find 3 other berries (21, 22, 23) if you push down the jars. For the last berry, you have to push the jar on the small cloth to reach the bottom of the hut. Exit the hut and switch to Pocahontas. Go to the right until you come to a lake. Push the wooden block into the water. Swim to the other side of the lake and push the other wooden block into the water. Switch to Meeko and cross the river using the trunks onto the water. Go to the other side of the lake and climb up the third tree trunk you see. Jump to the trunk to the left and then on the first tree trunk. There's a berry (24) on this one. Still as Meeko, climb on the last tree trunk again but this time jump to the right on the mountain cliff. In the rock face is a small opening so go in and at the end, push the boulder out of the hole to free a squirrel from the passageway. You'll receive the Spirit of the Squirrel. Now Pocahontas can climb up trees too. Switch back to Pocahontas and push the boulder in front of the middle tree and climb on it. Jump to grab the tree branch above you. Jump to the left to grab the next branch and then up to grab another one. Continue this way until you get at the top of the mountain. Switch to Meeko and use Pocahontas' arms to get on top of the mountain. At the right in a berry (25) you can get if you jump. Below, cross the river using the tree trunk and you'll get another berry (26). Go in the passageway and you'll be inside the mountain. Drop down and enter the passageway there. You'll end up above the place you were before. Push the tree trunk below. Switch back to Pocahontas and dive in the water of the lake in front of the passageway leading to the inside of the mountain. Go to a path at your left and push the boulder to free the fishes. You'll receive the Spirit of the Fish. You can now swim faster by pressing A. Now go back to the right and swim to the very bottom of the lake. Press A to use the spirit of the fish so you can dive deeper. At the very bottom, go to the left and make way to the surface of the water. You'll end up in the cavern where Meeko is. Climb above and get on the tree trunk. Use it to climb on the cliff above you. Stand there and switch back to Meeko. Get on Pocahontas' arms and jump on the ledge above. You'll get a feather and 3 berries (26, 27, 28). Exit the cavern as Meeko and then as Pocahontas too. Get the two characters on the island with the wooden catapult on. Put Meeko on the left edge of it and Pocahontas on the right side. Once the two characters are placed well, switch to Pocahontas and jump on her side of the trunk. Meeko will be launch in the air, to the right, in the lake. As Meeko, go on the rock over the water, to your left. Stay there and switch to Pocahontas. Go on the rock where Meeko is and switch back to Meeko. Jump on Pocahontas' arms and get the berry (29) above. Switch to Pocahontas and go to the right. Talk with the Tree Spirit and she'll tell you to climb on top of her. Go to the right and jump on the root. Then, jump on the branch above and again until you reach the top branch. There you'll find a feather and a second necklace. Jump to get to the very top of the tree. You'll a big ship pass through in front of you. Now, still as Pocahontas, get down the tree and go to your left, past the tree. Stand in the water, between the tree's root and the rock Meeko is on. Switch to Meeko and jump on Pocahontas' arms and then on the tree's roof to cross the water. Go to where Pocahontas climbed on the tree's branches and start jumping on the branches. You can get 3 berries (30, 31, 32) on the branches. Sometimes you'll need Pocahontas' help to jump higher. Switch to Pocahontas and go down the tree. This time, go to the right until you come to a small lake. Stand in the middle of it and switch back to Meeko. Go to the lake where Pocahontas is and cross it by jumping on Pocahontas. Continue to the right, still as Meeko, and go down some cliffs below the mountain. In one of the rock faces is a small opening. Enter it and push the boulder below at the end. Then, jump to the left to get a berry (33). Switch back to Pocahontas and use the boulder to jump above and reach the cliff. Use Pocahontas to help Meeko climb at the top of the mountain. As Meeko, go on the rock over the water and climb up the tree trunk. At the top you can get two berries (34, 35). Switch back to Pocahontas and get on the rock over the water at the top of the mountain. Jump to grab the tree branch above. Jump to the next one and then on the cliff above, to your right. Switch to Meeko and go the right where the waterfalls are. Jump from rock to rock to reach the other side. Continue to the right and go down the mountain to get a berry (36). If you go down a little more to turn left, you can get another berry (37). Return to the right until you come to a small mountain with a wolf's shadow on the rock face. Enter the small passageway there and you'll get a berry (38) at the end. There's also another berry (39) there you can get if you go right in one of the holes. You'll end up on top of the mountain. Push the boulder below and switch back to Pocahontas. Get past the waterfall by jumping from a rock to the other. At the end, go to the right and use the boulder to reach the cliff above. Go to the top of the mountain and push the boulder below. Go down the mountain where the rock fell. Push it against the rock face and climb on it. Switch back to Meeko and go where Pocahontas is. Jump on Pocahontas to reach the ledge above and get a berry (40). Switch back to Pocahontas and climb up the cliff. Now you'll have to race against the wolf. Press A 2 times while walking to run faster. You'll have to jump over 2 pits to win. If you win, you'll receive the Spirit of the Wolf. You can now sneak. Switch back to Meeko and go to the right, where Pocahontas is with the wolf. To cross over the pits, you have to jump on the tree trunks in the middle and grip yourself on them. At the end, get the third necklace in the small hole in the rock face. Now switch to Pocahontas and go back to the very left, below the mountain. You can't continue because a bush is blocking your way. Sneak (kneel and go left) to pass under the bush. Continue to the left below the waterfall and you'll come across John Smith. Continue to the left again and a rock will be blocking your way. Push it and John will come help you to push it out of your way. Behind the bush to your left, you can get an hidden berry (41). There's another berry (42) down the mountain if you drop below and a feather. You'll then see a small bear climb on top of a tree to get the bees' honey. There are 4 berries (42, 43, 44, 45) scattered around the trees near the bear. Climb to get them all. Now go to the right on the last tree trunk (right of the guard). Climb up and get on the cliff to your right. Jump on the first tree with honey on and then on the one to your left. There's a berry (46) at the top. Now climb on top and jump from tree to tree on your right. You'll slide down because of honey on the trunk so jump quickly and reach the last tree with the bee hive on. Jump on the hive to make it fall on the guard below. The guard will run away. Drop down below and climb to the mountain to your right (there's a feather here). Jump down and go in the opening in the wall to your right. You'll get another berry (47). Go back in the hole to your left and push the boulder below. Push the boulder against the wall to the right and jump on to reach the berry above (48). Go in the opening at the right and you'll end back near the wooden catapult. Now switch back to Pocahontas. Sneak behind the bush to escape from Kocoum. Go down the mountain. Go past the bear, to the right until you com to a low tree branch you can get on. Follow the squirrel and jump from branch to branch until you come to the top of the second tree where the bee hive is. Make it fall and the small bear will climb down the tree to his mother. You'll receive the Spirit of the Bear. You can now afraid the settlers. Go to the right and walk on the leaves on the ground. Stand there and press A to summon the spirit of the bear. The skinny guard will run away. Go to the very right until you come to the wooden catapult. Put Pocahontas on the left edge of it and Meeko on the right side. Switch to Pocahontas and jump. Meeko will be launch through the air and will get a berry (49). Drop down. Now, put Pocahontas on the right edge and Meeko on the left side. Switch to Pocahontas and jump. Meeko will be launch to a ledge high above. Push the tree trunk down and switch back to Pocahontas. Go to the left until you come to two trees. Use the tree branches to climb up on the mountain above. Go to the right and go up the rocks. Go on the trunk and jump to grab to ledge above where Meeko is. Go to the right and you'll be surrounded by darkness. The only thing you should see is the owl. He'll go on a tree branch and you have to follow him around. Make your way to the top cliff, following him, climbing up the tree branches. At the end, you'll receive the Spirit of the Owl. You can now see better in the dark. Climb the rocks and go down the mountain. A guard is sleeping below. To not wake him up, you'll have to use the tree branches above him to make your way past him. After that, you'll see another skinny guard. Press A to summon the spirit of the bear and make him run away. Continue to the right and you'll come to another sleeping guard. Push the crate next to him. Jump on it to reach the tree branch above him. Get the fourth necklace and jump to the right. Drop down the crates and go to the right. There's a guard there and you'll have to sneak behind the bushes to get past him. Switch back to Meeko now. You can get 2 berries (50, 51) near the first sleeping guard. Another berry (52) near the second sleeping guard. 2 other berries (53, 54) in a tree after the guard behind the bushes. Now, jump on the second tree trunk to the very right and jump on the bee hive to make it fall on the guard below. He'll run away. Get in the guards' camp and there's another berry (55) there. Switch back to Pocahontas and enter the camp. Summon the bear to afraid the guard inside. Get past the tent. Go to where the ship is and push the crate on one on the wooden plank. Make Pocahontas stand on the other one. Switch back to Meeko and get on the plank with the wooden crate. Jump to get on the ship and take get the 4 berries (56, 57, 58, 59) on your right. There's another berry (60) on your left too. Still as Meeko, enter the ship by a door you can't see, on the right side where you got the 4 berries. Ratcliffe's dog will run after Meeko and Meeko will make the cannon fire a cannon ball. Now you're Pocahontas and hurry to the left until you come to two guards. Climb up on the mountain's edges until you reach the top. You'll have to cross pits and climb on tree branches. Remember that you have to run before jumping from a high pit to reach the other side. At the end you'll get the fifth necklace and you'll come across two eagles. You'll receive the Spirit of the Eagle. Pocahontas will jump down and come across John. You have to get past all the obstacles using your animal powers before the sun rise. If you see a deer, run. If you see a squirrel, climb trees. If you see the bird, fall down cliffs. If you see the wolf, sneak under bushes. At one place you'll come across Meeko. Jump on the other side of the catapult he is on and he'll be launch into another catapult. Ratcliffe's dog will jump across a beehive and the guard below will run away. Then, dive and follow the otter underwater. Go down the tree branches and summon the bear to afraid the guard. After that, go to the right and drop down the pit. Jump over to the other side and afraid the other guard. Run to the right by pressing A 2 times and jump over the gasp as you see the eagle. You should come on time to save John. Pocahontas and John will then kiss each other and all the men will then leave aboard their ships, including John.
