Blocks =============================================================================== There are 7 types of blocks that will fall: _ _ _ _ |_|_|_|_| Your basic 4-space block. These are not only the only blocks that Can get you a tetris but the ones that appear only when you DON'T need them. _ _ |_|_| Well this one doesn't rotate, as you can plainly see. These are good for |_|_| Setting up a Tetris or multi-line combo. _ _ _ |_|_|_| The 'gumby' block. This can be rotated to make 4 different ways to |_| place it. Use this to fill in those nasty spots. _ _ _ |_|_|_| I find this piece very conveineint when you can find a long piece. |_| Of course, the extra piece on the end can be a pain in butt. _ _ _ |_|_|_| Just as conveineint (and just as annoying) as the other piece. What |_| more can i say? _ _ |_|_|_ This block is the most common, and probably the most annoying. Only |_|_| useful for filling in single, or sometimes double spaces. This can be a hard block to use when you have a flat surface. _ _ _|_|_| Well, probably 1% less common then the above piece, and just as bad. |_|_| Just hope you don't get this junker of a piece. =============================================================================== V. Game Screen =============================================================================== ______________________________ | | Mode | (Marathon, Ultra, 40 Lines, or VS. Com. | |_______ | | |One Of | (Next piece) | |7 Blocks| | |________| | | Next | | | Piece | | |________| | | | | | Lines: | | | ### | (Number of lines currently destroyed) | |________| | | | | | Score: | (Current score) | | ###### | | | Level | (Current level) |_____________________|________| Note: If you are playing VS. Computer, a meter to the far left of the screen will appear vertically. It is the current height they are at. =============================================================================== VI. Modes of Play =============================================================================== There are 4 basic modes of play - each offers it's own objective, skill level, and depth. They are: Marathon: --------- The original tetris game we all know and love (or hate). You know the rules, you play and play and play until you get the big score and\or a eventual pile up at the top. If only this mode had a way you could WIN. Oh well, at least it's in color! Ultra: ------ This is the same as marathon, with a few new rules: 1) You have only 3 minutes 2) Highest score is the object Uh ok, only 2, 1 really. This is fun as it forces you to make the blocks drop faster to get a better score. Tetris' are key in this mode! The good thing about this is that you can win! Well...sorta! 40 Lines: --------- Probably the least exciting. Your goal here is to finish in the LEAST amount of time possible. Obviously, you need to accumulate 40 lines to win. Takes 5 minutes to learn, and hours to master! VS. Computer: ------------- My personal favorite new mode. Here you battle the computer until either you, or the computer loses. The catch is, when you get 2-4 lines destroyed, the computer gets 2-4 lines stacked automatically on his screen. Likewise goes for you. For those who have to know everything, there is a meter on the left of the screen that shows the current height of your opponent. You need to win one time to get one star, first to three stars wins! =============================================================================== VII. Tips and secrets =============================================================================== Chalkboard Screen Saver: ------------------------ 1. On the first demo press SELECT. A fish screen saver will apper instead of the demo. 2. Close the screen saver by pressing A. 3. On the next demo press A. A confetti screen saver will appear. Close the screen saver by pressing B. 4. On the last demo press B. This code can take a while. Confetti Screen Saver: ---------------------- Press Start after the demo begins and you will get the Confetti/Nintendo Logo Screen Saver. Nice graphics demonstration of the GameBoy Color's capabilities. Continue a One-Player Game: --------------------------- If you ever get tired while playing a game,Press "START" to pause the game, then switch off the power. Now when you turn the system on, you will get a "CONTINUE?" screen, and you will start off from where you left off. Fish Screen Saver: ------------------ When the main screen appears, wait until the demo starts then press A to cancel it. After that the demo will be replaced by some fishies swimming around on the screen. Move the Blocks Up: ------------------- In Tetris DX, there's a bug. When any piece but a straight bar or a block is falling, hold LEFT (even after it's against the wall keep holding left) and keep pressing A really fast and the piece will actually start moving back up! You can do the same thing on the right side wall, but you have to hold RIGHT and keep pressing B instead. It's strange but it works. No Preview: ----------- To play a harder game where the next piece is not shown, press SELECT while playing. To show the pieces again, repeat this process. Quick Restart: -------------- To get back to the beginning screen at any time simply hold START, SELECT, A and B all at once. =============================================================================== VIII. High Scores =============================================================================== Author's High Scores: --------------------- Marathon - 137,486 40 Lines - 2:57 Ultra - 5,036 Reader's High Scores: --------------------- N\A =============================================================================== IX. Block Placement =============================================================================== Before you know where to PUT the blocks, i guess you should know HOW to move the blocks. Controls: --------- D-Pad Down: Speed block up\get points D-Pad Left\Right: Move Piece\block in the corresponding direction. A: Rotate block clockwise B: Rotate block counter-what-i-just-said-above Where to put those @!#% blocks: ------------------------------- Allright, now that you know that, let's get down to business. I'll take this section piece by piece at a time, with tips on where to generally place each one. _ _ _ _ |_|_|_|_| This is a no-brainer. Always switch this piece vertically, and put it either along one of the sides of the screen, or, hopefully in an area to get a tetris! The only time you SHOULD leave this piece horizontal is when you can't put it the other way (and when would that be?). _ _ |_|_| Again, this piece should probably be place on the sides of the screen, |_|_| or used to fill in a wide gap. When you can't put this piece in evenly, it's best to put it somewhere in the middle. _ |_|_ This piece is the kindest in the game. You can fill in anything if you |_|_| have open spaces with 3 sides, and if you want to place this on a flat |_| surface just flip it to that side! Not much advice on this one... _ |_|_ _ This piece i like to flip into a "r" shaped figure as i usually have |_|_|_| crevices of that shape. Otherwise, put it in the left corner as it is shown, or flip it into a "J" and put it in the right corner. _ _ _|_| This piece i like to flip into a "7" shaped figure as i usually have |_|_|_| crevices of that shape. Otherwise, put it in the right corner as it is shown, or flip it into a "L" and put it in the left corner. _ _ _|_|_| This piece is a pain in the ass. When you have a jagged surface, this |_|_| piece is easy to deal with, but even i have problems dealing with it on a flat surface. I found the best way to handle it is to let it fall as shown, and hope for a "T" block (see 3 above) to place under it, filling in the emptpy space - like this: _ _ _ _|_|_| + _|_|_ |_|_| |_|_|_| _ _ _ _|_|_|_|_ |_|_|_|_|_| _ _ |_|_|_ See above paragraph\art for more information. Simply reverse the image |_|_| and\or text in your mind and there you have it. =============================================================================== X.
