Sulpher E-mail: briansulpher@hotmail.com Version 1.0 Dates Written: September 13th, 2005 I dedicate this to the NES fans out there, as this one is part of the NES FAQ completion Project of 2004-2005, courtesy of the FAQ Contributor Board. We honour the most truly awesome and great system... the Nintendo Entertainment System! Never mind about Atari, Commodore 64, Colecovision, Sega Master System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, or any of the newer systems, we all know that the good old NES is where true gaming is at! Also, for Cougar, Howler, and Koonce. I miss you, and I hope you are living it up in the afterlife as you did in this world. You will always be in my memories, and you will never be forgotten. ----------- Version 1.0 ----------- -Submitted guide on September 13th, 2005 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------Table Of Contents------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Introduction 2) Controls 3) Castle Building 4) Enemy Forces 5) Strategies 6) Final Word ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------Introduction--------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) READY! AIM! FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRE! Yes, in the wonderful world of Rampart, the point is not to kill and maim with all of your ability, but to outhink a numerically superior foe and survive the vicious onslaught wrought by the Galleons and Man-Of-Wars that populate the bays around the fortresses held by your country. It is up to you on which ships to destroy first, which castles to start defending from, what walls to repair and which ones to abandon, and which approach will best serve your needs. You better make split decisions, aim true, and sink enough ships to make the enemy capitulate from their attacks! CEASE FIRE! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------Controls---------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) This section will look at the basic controls for winning all that lovely, lovely green from the dealer. D-Pad...: Moves the cursor around on the screen. SELECT..: Moves between Battleground areas. START...: Pauses/unpauses the game. B Button: When held down, the cursor will move far faster than normal. A Button: Press this to fire off a cannon, repeatedly pressing it to fire all of the cannons that are in your posession. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------Castle Building------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3) This section will look at the rules of Castle Building, including the various pieces of walls that can be used in the construction. o--------------o | Starting Off | o--------------o At the beginning of the map, all castles lie available for use. Pick one and get ready to fight! o------------------o | Build And Repair | o------------------o This portion occurs after the enemy and yourself have traded rounds, with the sinking of enemy ships and holes being punched in the ramparts of your fortresses. Now is the time to rebuild by covering up holes or by filling them. This pattern will continue till you lose or the enemy gives up the fight. o----------------------o | Wall Building Pieces | o----------------------o _ |_| The single wall piece (1X1) is the greatest piece to have appear while repairing your walls. It is so useful for filling holes that are hard/impossible to fill with any other piece. Make use of these by filling single holes that will allow for saving the current fortress that was under attack by the enemy. _ | | |_| The next most useful wall piece (1X2) to have appear, they can also fill narrow holes, stopped only by 1X1 holes. They are also somewhat useful for extending walls towards a new fortress, though they are better used in old wall repairs. _ | | | | |_| Fairly similar to the above two pieces (1X3), this one is more suited for building outside the original wall, instead used to span large gaps along an older wall to close off the hole there. It also makes an excellent wall extender to reach new castles quickly. _ | | | |_ |___| The L Block is very similar to the 1X3 piece, but it is more suited to the wall extension use than the outside wall patch, as the extra piece sticking out is a great part to start a new wall shoot for said extension of the walls. ___ | _| | |_ |___| The C Block is designed as a wall extender piece, but it can be used for patching walls if the enemy tries to knocks a bunch of small holes in a wall while keeping them alternating (wall, no wall, wall, no wall, etc.), as it can be slipped into the wall seamlessly, plugging two small holes for the price of one piece. _ ____| | | ____| |_| The Z Block is really only useful as a wall extender, as it is too large and mishpaen to be recommended for any other purpose. It also makes a good throwaway piece, put along a shoreline to help delay/foil landing attempts. _ _| |_ |_ _| |_| The Plus Block is not really useful for ANY purpose, so it is mostly used as a throwaway piece for blocking landing enemies. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------Enemy Forces-------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) This section will look at all of the enemy forces that will attempt to bring down the walls of your fortresses, ruining your campaign. o-------------------o | Single Mast Ships | o-------------------o The basic unit ofthe enemy forces, they will fal to a single volley of your fire. They rarely move at a speed above "sloth", but they can still fire off rounds, making thema dangerous enemy to ignore in the battle. They also have a second method of attack, where they land enemy foot soldiers on the embankments of the water, which can move during the battle and during the building phase, destroying unprotected fortresses as well as blocking the building of castle walls. o-------------------o | Double Mast Ships | o-------------------o The stronger cousin of the Single Mast Ship, they move faster, fire more frequently, and take a couple rounds of to sink to the bottom of the sea. They begin to replace the Single Mast SHip as the most numerous ship after the first battle has ended. o-------------------o | Golden Sail Ships | o-------------------o These flowers of the enemy flotilla also take multiple shots to destroy (like the Double Mast Ships, but even more durable), boast the highest speed with the ability to change direction immediately, and they have the nasty ability that makes any piece of wall that they hit flare up into an unquenchable, unbuildable upon fire, which last for three full turns of the battle before extiguishing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------Strategies-------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) This section will give some general tips to follow, but it is up to you to know when to apply them in your play. o----------------o | Castle Repairs | o----------------o When repairing the walls of the castle, it is often too tough to get the exact pieces of the randomly generated wall pieces to fit into the holes that the CPU has knocked into the walls, so they best approach is to build around the existing walls, surrounding the castle inside while ignoring the broken wall, making for new areas to store the new artillery inside. However, if a castle is too badly situated to build around the existing walls, or if the Golden Sail Ships have caused a conflagration or two, it might be best to just abandon the attempt at saving the current castle. Instead, start building the wall pieces around another castle, enabling it to hold the new Cannons won from the previous battle. However, this is a risky move, as the firepower of your forces will be diminished due to the loss (hopefully temporary) of the previously used weapons. Another way to approach any Castle Repairs is sometimes best served by blasting your own walls in areas where enemy fire has knocked the walls full of holes, this way you can repair the walls with ease instead of trying to build around the sad sack leftovers of what was once beautiful ramparts. o------------------o | Castle Selection | o------------------o The choice of a starting castle can make or break the chances of success on any particular map. Castles that are located near water or screen borders are the poorest options, as they leave little area to build, meaning that repairs are rather tough to complete successfully. In contrast, if a castle that is in the wide open is picked, it leaves lots of room for building out the walls around the existing ones, enclosing the current weaponry, leaving time to try and extend the walls to other castles. o------------------o | Waterfront Walls | o------------------o These walls serve two main purposes, both of which are of great use. The first purpose is to block out enemy landing parties, keeping them being able to advance towards the ramparts of the castles held by your side. The second purpose is to draw enemy fire, keeping them from blasting too many holes in the vaulable wall protecting the cannons and fortresses that are necessary to victory. o----------------------o | Enemy Ship Selection | o----------------------o Enemy ships come in the three types outlined in the Enemy Forces section, so learn about their abilities before reading up on the strategies for knocking them into the depths. i) To start off, the closest ships should be targetted, sinking them quickly with minimal shots allowed to be fired at your walls. ii) Next off, try to hit each Double Mast Ship at least once, as that will disable them from sending their landers onto the beaches, making life far easier in the Castle Repairs portion of the fight. iii) Finally, go after the remaining ships, trying to remove whichever type you deem as the most crucial to destroy. Golden Sail Ships are the most popular choice however, as their flare-up shots are annoying. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------Final Word--------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) As is the usual, this walkthrough is copyright property of Brian P.
