Boss Level: The Scourge 04. Outro / Legal --------- 01. Intro --------- Foreword: I wrote this guide a few years back while attempting to single handedly run a GBC site. The site is long gone and this guide wasn't posted anywhere at all, so I'm knocking the dust off it and posting it to GameFAQS, where it will never be read by anyone. But it makes me feel a tiny bit better about having written it. About the guide: This is not a walkthrough of Pitfall. It only details the secrets in the game, and points out the pros and cons of each split path. There is also a section better explaining the control, which the manual doesn't cover in enough detail. Not all levels contain secrets, so only the levels which apply are listed. Each environment has four levels in it, except The Prison which has two. If you find anything this guide has missed, please mail me at the address found at the top of this guide and it will be added, along with your name as a contributor. ----------- 02. Control ----------- Knowing what jump to use when is crucial in Pitfall, least you fall in a pit. Unfortunately, the manual doesn't explain the control very well, so here are all the moves you could use, if you wanted to. Personally I just like to run and jump, and yell at the little animals. Jump: grab things above you. Jump + Forward: goes a short distance but high in the air. Use it to get to ledges that are close but high above you. Jump + Up: grab things high in the air and directly above you. Forward + Jump: your all important running jump, used to jump large gaps. You might even call them...pits. Wa ha. Duck + Attack: used to attack while avoiding something above you, I guess. Kinda useless. Duck + Walk: Crawl. On all fours. ----------- 03. Secrets ----------- _____________________________ environment a: The Wilderness ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ •Level one To get the extra life partway through the stage, jump to the next platform and jump back. •Level two If you go as far right as possible in the beginning of the level you come to a vertically moving platform. If you jump off the right side you land on an extra life, but the fall kills you, so you break even. To get it the right way, very near the end of the level you come to a long down sloping ramp. On the next platform over you will see a palm tree. Stop at the end of the ramp and step off the edge. Go to the left to get the extra life, then to the right to exit the level. •Level three Halfway through the stage you will see a gold bar high above you after jumping off a vine. Go a little further up the ramp and jump back to get it. __________________________________ environment b: Underground Caverns ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ •Level one To get the extra health, do a high jump. At the place with the short section of icy floor and a gas vent at the end, instead of trying to get the timing right just long jump over the ice. This works for lots of the shorter spots of icy floor, and saves time and health. •Level two You will eventually come to a ring that drifts downwards when you grab onto it. If you take the lower path you get a single crystal, a gold bar and swing over to the exit. This path is much easier than the upper one, both to get to and to navigate. If you think fast you can jump onto the upper path, where you will jump across a dozen or so of those disappearing black platforms. Up here you get absolutely nothing, and unless you figure out that the last platform is on the left, not the right, you will probably fall to your death at the end of it all. However, for you true adventurers, it is much more challenging, and you can go backwards through the bottom path to get the gold bar. •Level three Towards the beginning of the level you come to a ring that rises when you grab onto it. The only way not to get hit by the demon bat when you land is to jump before you reach the end of your swing. __________________________ environment c: The Volcano ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ •Level one There is an obvious split at the beginning of this level. If you take the upper path you get seven crystals and a gold bar, along with the fine company of a rolling ape enemy. If you take the lower path you get to dance across some fire spitting pillars, and all you get is a x5 crystal at the end. After you jump across the disappearing black squares to solid ground, jump over to the left to find an extra life. Then you come to a vertically moving platform that marks the beginning of another split. Lower path has two crystals, top has ten and a rolling ape, and they are about equally difficult. •Level two At the very beginning of this level there is a hard to see split. Right past the first scorpion you can jump to the gray rock platform to take the upper path, or walk off the ledge before to take the lower path. The top path is more difficult but hides a gold bar and an extra life, if you play your cards right. The bottom path has only a few crystals, and is much easier. To get it all, start on the upper path. After the gold bar there are two short treadmills, and a rock ledge after those. Step off the left side of the ledge and scale down the side of the cliff to the extra life. Then fall to the left directly between the crystals to land on the lower path and finish the level. •Level three >From the platform where you see the level's first demon bat, walk left to get a few crystals and a gold bar. A little further into the level you come to one of those fire birds that darts back and forth. Continue on until you see the rolling ape on the platform ahead of you. Step off of the ledge before the ape. From there you have access to all the level's lower walkways. Go left for an extra life, a platform will then take you back to the upper level. When you get back to that point, go right for a few crystals and an easier exit. •Level four Right after the guy that is lit on fire at the beginning of this level there is a split. Go down for the boring normal path, with a bunch of crystals and fire jumping. Go up for one of the coolest hidden paths in the game. Unlike the others, the path keeps going up- there are multiple ways to go within it. Go all the way to the right for an extra life. Another path up and to the last doesn't get you anything, but is fun to navigate. However, once you're up there, you're so high above the level that the only way to get down is back the way you came. Still fun and worth the trip. _________________________ environment d: The Prison ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ •Level two Near the beginning of the stage there is a hard to see gold bar right after the drop off. You will land on a ramp sloping upwards, the bar is at the lowest point of the ramp. A little while later an extra life is hidden in this exact same way. _______________________ Boss Level: The Scourge ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ The battle against the Scourge takes place on four hovering platforms. Each platform has a black section on each end and a white section in the middle. Get on the platform on either side of this when he lands. Stand on the black end furthest from him. Wait for him to throw a ball, which should shatter at your feet without hurting you. Then do a long jump to his platform and swing with your pickaxe. If he is flashing when he flies back up into the air, you got him. Do this eight times to kill him. ----------------- 04. Outro / Legal ----------------- This guide is copyright 1999-2001 D.
