This game features three on three basketball that can be played in a quick game, a season, or in a playoff format. You can edit and change the rosters to your liking or play a friend through a link cable. It's a game that is almost as sensational as Kobe himself, even in his fourth season. This game takes place during the 99-00 season, Kobe's fourth, in which might I add (spoilers) the Lakers won the finals. When reading this guide, I expect you to know the basic rules of basketball. Chances are, you probably already know(or can figure out) what a block or rebound is and things like that. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx {2.0} Basics xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx +----------+ | Controls | +----------+ Basic Controls: --------------- A: Pass(offense), Confirm, Attempt Steal(defense) B: Shoot(offense), Cancel, Jump(defense) D-Pad: Move Player Start: Post up Select: Open menu, see more stats in Roster Mode Advanced Controls: ------------------ Tap B: Pump fake D-Pad + B: Fadeaway If you're running the court and there's NOBODY near you, then the game will sometimes shift to a cutscene that shows your player dunking. +-----------------+ | The Game Screen | +-----------------+ When playing the game, you'll see a few things on the screen. On the bottom of the screen you'll see the player's name. The bar at the top shows the shot clock(20 in this game) and a green bar. To be honest, I have no idea what the bar does. If you do, please E-mail me. I think it has to do with a player in the passing lane or opponent trying to steal the ball. The middle shows your players and is the actual game screen. The player you are controlling will have an arrow over his head. The goal of the game is to score more buckets than the opponents. You set the winning score. Each basket is worth one point, or two points from behind the arc. If there are fouls in the game, then you'll shoot free throws for each foul over the limit(five). To shoot a free throw, press B when the line is in the dark grey area in the center of the bar. The longer you wait, the more the bar shrinks, so be sure to get your free throw off early! +--------------+ | Pause Screen | +--------------+ While playing, you can press select to bring up a menu. Here, you can set some ingame preferences, substitute players, set strategies, and more. Here's a rundown of what each one does. Bench ----- If stamina is on, you'll see your player's stamina to the left of their picture. Once it's low, it's time to bring in someone off the bench. In order to make a substitution however, you must call a timeout. Another thing you can do in this menu is "lock" on a player by pressing left or right on his portrait. This will make you play that player only. The other two on your team will be out of your control. Strategy -------- Here, you can set an offensive and defensive strategy for the CPU controlled players. It doesn't seem to work however. Whenever I select inside post, everyone stands out near the perimeter. Hmm. Anyway, for offense, there's normal, inside post, outside post, and perimeter. For defense, there's normal, loose, tight, and full court. Inside post means that the player with the highest strength will be in the paint near the basket. Outside post means that a player will be around the free throw line. Perimeter means that your players will be around the three point line. For defense, loose defense means that your players will not foul very much, but the opponent will more easily get to the basket. Tight defense will prevent opponents from getting pst you, but you will be called for much more fouls. Full court is when your players play defense down the length of the court. This will give them much more fatigue, however. If fouls are off, play tight defense. If they're in, keep it at normal. Scoreboard ---------- This is self-explanatory. This menu shows the score, any time left on the shot clock, and team fouls. Game Stats ---------- Similar to the scoreboard. This shows the team stats such as FGs and assists, and also shows each individual player's stats in the game. You can scroll through the two competing teams and players by pressing left/right or up/down. Preferences ----------- These will be described in section 4. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx {3.0} Modes xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx After the title screen, you will immediately be taken to the main menu where you can select a bunch of modes to play. Here's all of them and the difference between them. Pickup ------ A pickup game is essentially an exhibition game, or a practice game. They don't for anything except fun. No stats are kept and you can choose you and your opponent's teams. This is also the mode to choose to link up. Just go to link after picking Pickup and you can play your friend. Season ------ This allows you to play through one season. It's a little restricted, though. Nobody can make any trades during the season and you don't do anything except play the games. The game goes by the actual NBA season schedule. You can choose to simulate games that you don't want to play. You can also choose the rules, such as fouls, shot clock, and points to win. You're basically playing a bunch of pickup games with competitive stats. The game automatically saves after every game, whether you played or simulated it. Playoffs -------- This mode chooses random teams(or the top teams after completing Season Mode) that are placed in playoff format. Choose your team, then play through several rounds to be crowned the NBA champions. You can set the rules here too, such as the number of wins needed to advance to the next round. Like in Season Mode, the game saves automatically after every game. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx {4.0} Preferences xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx You can set your preferences in the options menu or during the pause screen if you are playing a game. Here's the definition of each one. *These preferences can only be changed in the options menu, not the pause menu. **Difficulty ------------ This sets the difficulty of the game. There are three settings: Rookie, Pro, and All-Star which translates to easy, medium, and hard respectively. **Games Per Match ----------------- This is the number of wins it takes to win the "match". If it's only set to 1, then you win after winning one game. If it's set to two out of three, that mean you must beat the team twice in order to advance or win the match. Usually, this is kept at one to shorten game time. **Game Length ------------- This is how many points it takes to win a game. This game is decided by points, not time. The standard is seven. Defensive/Offensive Fouls ------------------------- The default setting is off, but you can turn on fouls. They can be called at a low or high ratio. This also means that there will be free throws in the game. Out-Of-Bounds ------------- With this off, your players can step out of bounds and nothing will happen. I usually keep this off. The camera is at an angle so that it's hard to see whether you're going base line or nearly stepping out. It just expands the court a little bit. Backcourt --------- Turns on backcourt violation. After you get the ball over to your side of the court, you can't bring it back. However, there's no ten second violation in this game. Goaltending ----------- Players with high block and jump rating can block shots when they're near the basket. It's a pretty cheap thing to do, so I would turn this on. With it on, you'll get an extra point if they block the shot near the basket. Or technically, on the falling point of its arc. 5-Second Inbound ---------------- You must inbound the ball within five seconds if this is turned on. Pretty easy to do since your opponents never play pressure defense. Shot Clock ---------- The shot clock in this game is only 20 seconds. Since the winner is decided by points and not game clock, there's really no point to have this on. If you don't take a shot within 20 seconds, you'll have a turnover. Fatigue ------- A big part of the game. If you turn this on, your bench players will have a role. If not, then you can continue to play your starters throughout the game. Many teams with weak benches suffer much when Fatigue is turned on. Players will gradually get tired as the play. You can check their fatigue meter on the bench menu. Indicator --------- This puts a little triangle above your player's head to show which player you are. If it's off, you'll have to rely on the gray bar on the bottom. Control Direction ----------------- You can choose between screen and court...OK, I have no idea what this does. I tried playing in both modes, they're both the same. Again, if you know what this is, be sure to E-mail me. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx {5.0} Tips xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 1. Don't get too deep in the post with your back turned, especially when there's a bunch of guys there within arm's distance. You will easily get the ball stolen or blocked. 2. Most big men don't have good handles. Please, oh please don't let them hold the ball anywhere besides the post or they'll get the ball stolen. 3. Stealing the ball is the most important thing in the game, besides scoring or course. The more possessions you have, the better. If fouls are turned off, just tap A near the player like crazy. If it's turned on, don't be reckless but still play tight defense. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx {6.0} Stats xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Each player has different stats, but do all of them really matter? Here's what each stat does. Spd --- This is the speed of the player. This affects how fast they can run up and down the court. Necessary for a guard. A fast player provides easy opportunities near the basket by blowing by others. FT -- Shows the chances of your player making in free throws. The higher the rating, the longer the gray bar when shooting the free throw. Not really necessary, even with fouls turned on. It's pretty rare that you get fouled that often. Drb --- This stands for dribble. An important stat, since the higher your dribble the less chance of the opponent picking your pocket. FG -- Basically the shooting ability of the player. The higher, the better. Pas --- This is the passing ability of your player. If it's low, your passes will get picked off easily by the opposing players. Jmp --- Jump? I have no idea what this stat does. I'm guessing it has to do with the jump ball at the beginning of the game, but I can't be sure. I don't know if it affects any other stats. Maybe dunking? End --- Endurance. The higher the endurance is, the more your player can play without getting tired. Of course, if fatigue is off, it doesn't matter. Stl --- A very important stat. The higher your steal rating is, the higher the chance of stealing the ball. Blk --- The higher this stat is, the more of a chance you'll block a shot. Of course, this also relies on your timing. If you're really late, then you're obviously going to block nothing but thin air. Def --- You've probably noticed while playing the game that some players won't really let you get through them as easily as some others. That's what the Defense stat does. Reb --- The computer will pretty much do all the rebounding for you, depending on the rebound stat. The higher it is, the more likely you grab rebounds in the air. Str --- Players with higher strength can bang around in the paint more easily. You'll be able to push past other players and get an easy bucket. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx {7.0} Roster xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Here are the rosters that are in the game. Can I find them? A: Nope. The best you can do is create a player that resembles that player's stats. Q: Does the position in Create-A-Player matter? A: No, not really. Q: Is there any way to make the bottom bar not flash "Steal" or "Rejected" for so long? A: Not as far as I know. Q: Can players get injured during the season mode? A: Nope. Q: So is there any point in having a bench? A: Not unless you turn on fatigue. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx {9.0} Conclusion xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Thanks for reading my FAQ.
