To do that you have to capture the other pieces and use many stategies. ***** Board ***** The board is an 8X8 grid that is labeled on each side. Going vertical is 1-8 and going horizontal is A-H. This is the setup for the start of the game: A B C D E F G H _________________________________________________ | | | | | | | | | 8 | R | Kn | B | Q | K | B | Kn | R | |_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____| Computer | | | | | | | | | 7 | P | P | P | P | P | P | P | P | |_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____| | | | | | | | | | 6 | | | | | | | | | |_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____| | | | | | | | | | 5 | | | | | | | | | Legend |_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____| ---------- | | | | | | | | | R = Rook 4 | | | | | | | | | Kn = Knight |_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____| B = Bishop | | | | | | | | | Q = Queen 3 | | | | | | | | | K = King |_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____| P = Pawn | | | | | | | | | 2 | P | P | P | P | P | P | P | P | |_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____| | | | | | | | | | Player 1 (you) 1 | R | Kn | B | Q | K | B | Kn | R | |_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____|_____| Each piece moves differently and has different strengths. Below are how each piece moves. **** Pawn **** There are 8 pawns in this game. Usually if it is the most common piece, it is the least valuable, exactly how the pawns are. The pawn looks like a little stick with a ball on the top. The pawn can only move one square straight at a time except for a few exceptions. When the pawn is still on its starting spot, it can move two spaces straight. The pawn can NOT attack by moving forward, it can only attack by going diagonally. When attacking the pawn can only go forward diagonally one space. When there is a piece directly in front of a pawn and there is no one to attack, then the pawn can't move. _____ _____ _____ | | | | | Atk | Reg | Atk | |____\|__|__|/____| |\ | /| | P | |_____| ****** Knight ****** The knights have the most interesting move in the game. They move over two spaces and up one. During their move they jump over any piece, and that piece is not captured. The only piece that can be captured is one on the landing space. The way they move looks a little like a L. A knight is shaped like the head of a horse. _____________________________ | | | | | | | | End-|--|--|-End | | |_____|_____|__|__|_____|_____| | | | | | | | | End | | | | | End | |__|__|_____|__|__|_____|__|__| | | | | | | | | | | ---|-----|-Kn--|-----|--- | |__|__|_____|__|__|_____|__|__| | | | | | | | | | | End | | | | | End | |_____|_____|__|__|_____|_____| | | | | | | | | | End-|-----|-End | | |_____|_____|_____|_____|_____| **** Rook **** A rook is the piece on the two ends of the board. The rook is pretty useful, but can be limited sometimes. The rook can move as far as it can vertically and horizontally. It captures a piece when it lands on it. A rook can not move diagonally. The rook looks like a castle tower. _________________ | | /|\ | | | | | | | |_____|__|__|_____| | | | | | |<----|--R--|---->| |_____|__|__|_____| | | | | | | | | | | |_____|_\|/_|_____| ****** Bishop ****** The bishop is the piece on the inside of the knights. Kind of like the rook but completely opposite. The bishop can move any direction diagonally as far as it can. The bishop captures by landing on another piece. The bishop can't move horizontally or vertically. The bishop looks like a pawn except instead of a ball on the end, it turns into a point. The top also has a slight crack. _________________ | \ | | / | | \ | | / | |____\|_____|/____| | |\ /| | | | B | | |_____|/___\|_____| | /| |\ | | / | | \ | |__/__|_____|__\__| ***** Queen ***** The best piece in the game is definitely the queen. The queen is the ultimate weapon and you don't want to lose her fast. She can move any direction, (vertically, horizontally, diagonally) as far as she can. The queen looks like a crown with sharp points. _________________ | \ | /|\ | / | | \ | | | / | |____\|__|__|/____| | |\ | /| | |<----|--Q--|---->| |_____|/_|_\|_____| | /| | |\ | | / | | | \ | |__/__|_\|/_|__\__| **** King **** Maybe not the best piece in the game, but for sure the most important. If you lose your king, you lose. The king can move in any direction just like the queen, but is limited to one space per move. The main reason to move your king is to get him out of harms way. The king looks like a bishop with an over-inflated top and no crack. _________________ | | | | | End | End | End | |____\|__|__|/____| | |\ | /| | | End-|--K--|-End | |_____|/_|_\|_____| | /| | |\ | | End | End | End | |_____|_____|_____| ******************* Check and Checkmate ******************* What are they? These are two terms used to say whether the king is in danger. Check: When another piece can attack the king, the game will say CHECK. Check is when the king is in danger and has to move. A king can't move into check, the game won't allow it. If you hear check it means that your king is in danger, but he can move to get safe. When the king can't move to be safe, that is called a... Checkmate: When your king is in danger and you can't get out of the way to get safe, it is called checkmate. If the game says checkmate then you lose. ********* Stalemate ********* A stalemate is pretty much a tie. A stalemate occurs when the king is not in check but can't move anywhere due to the fact that enemy pieces won't let it move. Because you can never move into check, and you can't skip your turn, the result is a tie, or stalemate. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>< ============= Special Moves ============= There are a few special things you can do that go a little outside a pieces moves. Pawn Promotion: When a pawn gets to the defending sides end, the pawn is turned into a queen. Castling: The technique allows the king to be defended by the castle early in the game. It can only be performed if neither the king nor the right rook has moved. The path between them must also be clear. To castle, select the king and move him 2 spaces to the right. He will move over, and the rook will move to the other side of the king. En Passant: Say a red pawn is on b2. A blue pawn lies on a4. If the red pawn moved to b4, the a4 blue pawn could capture it as if it had only moved one space (to b3). This rule must be done on the turn immediately following the two space pawn move. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>< ================ Options/Settings ================ *********** Start Menu: *********** Piece Color: There are five different piece colors. 1.Black/White 2.Maroon/Grey 3.Birght Blue/White 4.Magenta/Turquoise 5.Dark Blue/Magenta Board Color: There are five different board colors. 1.Dark Blue/Light Blue 2.Dark Green/White 3.Black/White 4.Looks the same as 3 5.Looks same as 3 and 4 Piece Type: There are four piece types.
