INTRODUCTION This is a FAQ/Walkthrough for the GBA game Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3. Like previous games in the Narikiri series, this game features not so much a serious storyline but a way for fans of the Tales series to see their favorite characters all in one game. The player takes the role of two lead protagonists, Frio and Kyaro, who have the ability to put on different costumes to gain different abilities. Along the way they'll be joined by the characters from all of the major previous Tales games (Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Destiny, Tales of Eternia, Tales of Destiny 2, and Tales of Symphonia). Narikiri Dungeon 3, like other GBA games, is pretty limited in its text display capacity. Thus instead of displaying complicated kanji, the game restricts itself to only the most simple and well-used kanji, and most of the menu items and move names and such are in hiragana and katakana. Thus, even players with only a rudimentary knowledge of Japanese can get by in the game, making it an attractive game in some respects. However, the game is most enjoyable with a full understanding of the storyline as well as a familiarity with all of the previous games, including ToD2 (which has not seen a US release and might never). I will assume that if you're playing this game, you've played at least some of the previous Tales games. This FAQ makes use of SJIS encoding in order to display Japanese characters. I included this feature so that if you do not know Japanese, you can easily match up the characters on your screen to the characters in this guide. You will need to have support for viewing Japanese characters on your computer, however. Certain versions of Windows should have it built in; otherwise, you'll either need to get a program like NJStar Communicator, or you'll need to get Japanese character support for Internet Explorer and open this file in IE instead of Notepad/Wordpad. The only website authorized to post this FAQ is www.gamefaqs.com. If you see this document elsewhere, not only are they posting without my permission, but they likely do not have the most current version of this FAQ. Emails to me asking questions already answered in the FAQ, even if the answers are not in the version you are reading, will be deleted without response. 2. CONTROLS The basic controls used in the game are as follows: A - Confirm (Menus) Select Character (Map) Normal Attack (Battle) B - Cancel (Menus) General Menu (Map) Techniques (Battle) L - Change Display (Menus) Change Character (Map) Block (Battle) R - Change Display (Menus) Change Character (Map) Select Target (Battle) Select - Battle Menu (Battle) Start - Pause 3. GAMEPLAY BASICS There are three basic phases to the game, which will be discussed in turn: Town, Dungeon, and Battle. In Town, as Frio and Kyaro, you will go around talking to NPCs, buying equipment, making costumes, learning accessories, and talking to Tales heroes who have joined you. In Dungeon, you will proceed through dungeons in a turn-based fashion, gathering treasure, encountering monsters, and fulfilling missions. In the Battle portion, of course, you will be actually fighting monsters you will encounter during the Dungeon portions of the game. ---------- TOWN ---------- Here you'll be presented with a map of Frio and Kyaro's town, Minakur. You simply use the directional buttons to scroll between possible destinations and press A to enter them. Most destinations are just miscellaneous places where you'll be able to talk to NPC and/or Tales Hero companions that have joined you, but some have more specific purposes. Here's a list of destinations in town: 町立図書館 Town Library 古代史研究所 Ancient History Research Lab Professor Brown is here. This is where you'll select missions or previously visited dungeons. 森の集会所 Forest Meeting Place Later in the game Nancy will show up here. You'll be able to buy some new Roots from her, as well as some food and accessories that Maho doesn't sell. Sometimes she randomly disappears, however. うさぎ小路 Rabbit Trail 夕焼け橋 Dusk Bridge 日の出橋 Sunrise Bridge なりきりショップ Costume Shop Mel and Dio, from the first Narikiri game, are running shop here. They'll be able to make costumes for you, upgrade your characters, and sell you Roots for costumes, all for a price. 保安官事務所 Sheriff's Office マホの雑貨屋 Maho's General Goods This is the general store of the game, where you'll buy items, accessories, food, and roots. ミナクル広場 Minakur Plaza さくら食堂 Cherry Blossom Dining Hall Judy is here. By bringing her food items she'll teach you new recipes. 来夢来人ホテル Dream Visitor Hotel ミナミの大橋 South Big Bridge レミ遺跡入り口 Remy Ruins Entrance Professor White is usually hanging out here. あすなろ園 Cypress Garden This is where you usually start in town. After finishing the first mission, every time you go to the Ancient History Research Lab you'll be given a list of potential destinations. The newest one that corresponds with your current mission is usually at the top. However, you can go back to most dungeons to accumulate experience and Gald or get items you missed the first time through. Once you've selected a dungeon, you'll get the following options: しゅつどう - Head to the dungeon. ミニマップ - Minimap of the dungeon. しょうりじょうけん - Victory conditions. てきリスト - List of enemies. へんせい - Party formation. ふく - Costumes. Minimap, Victory Conditions, and Enemy List are identical to the commands found in the Dungeon menu and are described in the Dungeon section. Party Formation and Costumes are identical to the commands in the game menu and are described below. In Mel and Dio's Costume Shop, you can do the following: つくる - Here you'll make new costumes for your characters. After selecting this a list of the costumes you can currently make based on what Roots you have in your inventory as well as the cost to make them shows up. Simply select one (which of course will take your gold and use up the Root). Be aware that some costumes not only require specific Roots but also require that you've created some other costume first as well. For instance, even though you get the "World of One" root required to make Genius's costume right after the first mission, you cannot make the Genius costume because another prerequisite is having the Magician costume first. See the Costumes/Techniques section for details. きょうか - This option lets you select an accessory or Root with which to imbue either Frio or Kyaro. This consumes the selected item to permanently increase the character's stats. The cost to imbue goes up every time you do it; also, since it does consume the item, you should not use rare Roots or accessories to do this (they don't even give better effects than regular ones) unless you already have enough. かう - Lets you buy new roots. うる - Lets you sell roots. In Maho's General Store, you can buy かう or sell うる: どうぐ - Tools たべもの - Food アクセサリー - Accessories ルーツほか - Roots etc. Pressing B or Select will bring up the game menu. Here you'll be able to see your currently formed parties, the amount of Gald you have, and several options. The game menu has the following options: へんせい: This option lets you form your parties. Upon picking this option you'll be prompted to select a party. Once you do you'll be given more options. いれる - Add a member to the party from your total party member reserve. はずす - Remove a member from the party. かいさん - Dissolve the party (same as removing all members). たいれつ - Edit the party formation and designate the party leader. The leader, selected by moving the yellow leader icon over a particular member, is the character you actually control in battle. Also, some characters give special bonuses to the party when designated as the leader. ステータス - Select a party member to view his or her status. Explained in more detail below. じゅつ・わざ - View and set a character's techniques. Explained in more detail below. さくせん - Set the party's tactics. Explained in more detail below. じょうほう: This option gives you various information on stuff you've already seen in the game. The Narikiri Catalog なりきりキャタログ allows you to check how many of the game's 89 costumes you already have. The Monster Collection モンスターずかん lets you keep track of how many of the game's 154 monsters you've encountered; by using Spectacles or Inspect Eye, you can also add detailed info about each monster to the Collection. The Character Book キャラクターめいかん lets you keep track of what Tales Heroes you've already encountered. せきばん is stone tablets and is a record of the contents of any of the stone tablets you've read. The Hero Legends えいゆうでん is sort of a compiled Tales history; it lets you review what went on in previous Tales games, how the game's villains have changed Tales history, and after fulfilling missions, how Frio and Kyaro have set history straight. Finally, Cooking りょうり shows you a list of recipes you've learned. じゅつ・わざ: This option lets you select a character's techniques. Upon selecting a character you can set your techniques to the B button and a directional push. As is familiar from the other Tales games, a move may be set to B button (neutral), up+B, left/right+B, and d+B. There are no shortcuts in Narikiri Dungeon 3. If you select a non-leader character you will instead see a list of that character's techniques. You can forbid the AI from using a technique by pressing select over it, graying it out. ステータス: Here you can select a character and see their Status. On the left side of the screen is, in order from top to bottom, their level, attack, defense, intelligence, speed, experience, and up to two accessories they may have equipped. On the right is the character's name, what costume they have on (for Frio and Kyaro only), a graphical view of the character, and their current HP/TP and max HP/TP. Pressing left/right will switch the left display to a list of the techniques the character has. Pressing the L/R buttons allows you to scroll through the characters in your parties. さくせん: This option determines the tactics for a character. Note that tactics only apply to non-leader (i.e. computer-controlled) characters. The options are じゆうにたたかえ Fight freely, ぜんりょくでたたかえ Fight with al your strength, まもりをかためろ Focus on defense, おさえてたたかえ Suppress the enemy, and とくぎはつかうな Don't use any techniques. アイテム: Shows you the items you have. The options on the left or sorting options. あたらしい shows newly obtained items, ぜんぶ shows all items, どうぐ shows tools (consumable items), たべもの shows food items, and ルーツほか shows roots and miscellaneous items. つける allows you to equip accessories (accessories are the only equippable items in this game) while はずす allows you to remove them. ふく: Manages your clothes. The first option, きがえ Change, lets you change Frio and Kyaro's outfits. かくにん Confirm lets you see a list of all outfits in your collection. Note that of course Frio can only equip male costumes while Kyaro can only equip female costumes. カスタム: Allows you to set various options for the game. The first option is for battle mode and allows you to pick between Manual, Semi-Auto, and Auto. Just like other Tales games, in Manual you do everything yourself; in Semi-Auto you automatically run up to your targetted opponent when you press an attack button; and in Auto the AI fights for you. The second option is Message Speed (fast, normal, slow); the third is Camera Mode, which applies to the Dungeon Maps. Mode 1 lets you move the camera and does not move it automatically; Mode 2 follows whatever team you selected last; and Mode 3 automatically follows whatever team is closest to an enemy. The final option lets you change the button settings for battle only. セーブ: Save. You only have one save file at a time. If you save in town, the save is normal; if you save during a dungeon, you get a special save which must be loaded next time you start the game and is deleted once you load it - in other words it's more like a placeholder than a real saved game. ---------- DUNGEON ---------- Once you've entered a dungeon, the game switches to this mode. When a dungeon starts, you'll be given a victory condition. This is usually something like "Reach a certain point" or "Defeat a certain enemy". You'll also be given conditions under which your mission will fail. For the most part, if the party with Frio and Kyaro are defeated in battle, you'll fail. Also, several maps will require you to keep at least a certain number of parties. The game is somewhat turn-based. As each turn begins, you'll see the party leaders on the map. You can have up to 4 parties of 3 characters for any given dungeon. When you select a party with the A button, the party menu pops up. The party menu has the following options: いどう: Movement. After selecting this, move the cursor to the desired location and press A again to set the destination. Once you end the turn, that party will move to the designation location. Note the color of the dots when you pick a destination. White dots means nothing is in the way. Yellow dots means that something is in the way. Note that the tracking in this game is pretty bad, and if you try to make your character go around more than one corner in one turn, they'll probably end up getting stuck and ending the turn in the corner instead of where you want them to end up. Red dots means that the designated location is beyond the movement range of that party, whether because there are impassable barriers in the way or because it's simply too far. Some characters have special movement properties if set as the leader of the party; ninjas and thieves and the like can walk further than normal, while Arche and witches can fly over gaps and some barriers. If an exclamation mark pops up over a destination, it means that there is something there (such as a door, switch, or treasure chest) that your party can check once they get there. じゅつ・わざ: Lets you set techniques just like in the game menu. アイテム: Lets you check and use items just like in the game menu. りょうり: Lets you cook food. Select a recipe from the menu. The chance of success is shown with each recipe, and the required ingredients are shown to the right. Each party can cook one recipe per turn. Obviously more beneficial recipes are harder to make. As recipes are made, the chances of success go up. If a recipe fails, the ingredients are still consumed and the party cannot make another recipe this turn. ステータス: Lets you check status just like in the game menu. たいれつ: Lets you set the party formation just like in the game menu. さくせん: Lets you set tactics just like in the game menu. きがえ: Lets you change and confirm clothes just like in the game menu. Pressing Select will bring up the minimap. You can see the location of your parties and all the enemy parties on the map. Pressing B will bring up the dungeon menu. Again, there are several options here: ターン終了: This ends the turn. Upon ending, all of your parties will move to their designated destination, while enemies will move as well. If one of your parties bumps into an enemy party while moving, you'll be taken to the Battle portion of the game. Upon the battle concluding, you'll be brought back to the Dungeon map. Once everybody has reached their destination, the next turn begins. Incidentally you can hold down B while people are moving to speed their animation up. ミニマップ: Minimap. Same as Select button. 勝利条件: Check the victory and failure conditions. てきリスト: Brings up a list of enemies present on the map. Enemies you have not used a Spectacles or Inspect Eye on will simply have ??? in their description. てったい: Withdraw from the map. This will cancel the dungeon and let you return to town. You still keep all the Experience, Gald, and Items you've picked up. Actually, even if you fail a mission you keep all of those things and you get to retry, so this option should only be used if you're in a hurry. カスタム: Set game options, just like the game menu. ちゅうだん: Lets you save the game. As mentioned before, saving in a dungeon makes you load the save the next time you start, and the save is deleted once you load it, making it more of a placeholder than a real saved game. Treasure chests will automatically open if a party stops near it (make sure the exclamation mark pops up when selecting the destination). Locked doors require a key set カギあけセット available in the General Store; some special locked doors require a special item called Ancient Keys いにしえのカギ that are only available as random drops from certain monsters. Alternatively, doors that do not need Ancient Keys can be lockpicked if there is a thief in the party. When approaching a door, you'll be asked if you want to use the thief's ability or use a key set to open the door. Simply choose yes (green balloon) or no (red balloon). The game keeps track of what turn number you are on. Usually this serves little purpose; however, some dungeons actually have a maximum number of turns, and you'll instead see how many turns you have left. If you run out of turns, you fail the mission. Narikiri Dungeon 3 is not a terribly strict game, as failing a mission, whether by running out of turns, dying in battle, or any other failure condition, will simply send your party back to town where you can try again. You'll even keep all of the experience, Gald, and items you've earned. Thus, you should never worry too much about battles. ---------- BATTLE ---------- This will be the most familiar portion of the game for those of you who've played previous Tales games. The basic mechanics are almost exactly the same as the earlier Tales games (surely you didn't expect Symphonia's pseudo -3D on the GBA?) Battles take place in real-time on a 'linear motion battle' system. In this game each party can have up to three characters, of which you'll control one at a given moment while the computer AI controls the other two. Left and right move your character along the line. Double tapping will make you dash. Up will make you jump. Down has no purpose by itself but is used in conjunction with other buttons. A is the regular attack button. Some characters will be able to chain two regular attacks together while others can only perform one. Generally this reflects the original game the character came from. Characters from ToD2 and ToS can do two attacks, for instance (even though in the original game they could do three) whereas some ToD characters can only do one attack (just like the original game). B is the technique button. Depending on what techniques you've set via the techniques option in the menus, pressing B alone, up+B, left/right+B, and down+B will produce different special techniques. Magic spells are also included; magic spells require some casting time and will fail if the caster is hit during the casting time. Of course, using techniques consumes TP. L is block. Your character will take reduced damage while blocking. This doesn't nullify damage totally, and generally magic cannot be blocked. R is the target change button. Hold down R and use the directional keys to select your current target. This is more important in Semi-Auto mode than the other modes, because Semi-Auto makes you automatically close to the proper distance to a target before attacking. Pressing Start will pause the battle. Pressing Select brings up the battle menu. The options in this menu are: とくぎ Technique Setup さくせん Tactics どうぐ Item たいれつ Formation In general all of these choices give you menus similar to the ones described before. You can bind a technique to any B-button combination you want and prohibit the AI from using certain techniques just as in the standard menu; you can change tactics and formation as described earlier; and you can use items on your characters in battle. After the battle you'll gain some TP back for everybody. You'll also see the Gald, EXP, and items you got. High count combos give you a bonus to the EXP you earn. Finally, you'll see if any characters gained a level, and the associated techniques they learned, if any. 4. WALKTHROUGH There are 25 missions in the game. Each one will be presented here as its own section. Although I've numbered each section for easy reference, there's no numbering within the game itself. Each section will provide a general overview of the dungeon, victory and failure conditions, and a list of treasure chests. Remember that in most cases you can come back to a dungeon to get more experience and Gald and to collect treasures you might have missed. Indeed, many dungeons have treasure chests that you cannot get the first time through; you have to come back later for them. Exceptions to this rule (dungeons that you can only visit once, in other words) will be noted. This game is not terribly tough, so there is rather little in the way of special strategies listed here; rather I've just listed the general goals of each section, including the things that those of you who can't read Japanese might miss out on. ---------- MISSION 1 ---------- Dungeon: Ruins of the Meeting (ToD2) Victory: Defeat Elraine. Defeat: Frio and Kyaro's team is defeated. Treasures: 300 Gald Apple Gummy Orange Gummy Mixed Gummy Life Bottle This is your first dungeon. You'll get some guest parties right off the bat; the ToD party of Stan, Mary, and Kongman, the ToE party of Rid, Farah, and Keel, and the ToS party of Lloyd, Colette, and Genius. Also, Refill (Raine) of ToS will join Frio and Kyaro to round out the team. Refill will begin by giving you a quick tutorial of the dungeon movement system. Your end goal is to reach Elraine, that nasty ol' villain from ToD2, and defeat her. The doors that lead to the treasure chest are locked. Since you are taken to this dungeon straight away, you won't have had the opportunity to buy any key sets at the store yet. Luckily you are given some costumes straight off; the Knight (male) and Thief (male) costumes for Frio, and the Martial Artist (female) and Scholar (female) costumes for Kyaro. With the Thief costume, you can use their special ability to open the locked doors with Frio's party. The 3 guest parties are all relatively high level compared to Frio and Kyaro, who start at 1. Thus, it would be a good idea to try and let Frio and Kyaro fight most of the generic enemies for experience. Incidentally, if you put Kyaro in the Scholar, she can use Inspect Eye to add detailed information about each monster to the Monster Collection. You'll also need to use her Scholar outfit to undo the switch that makes the bridge that leads to Elraine herself. Once you've made the bridge, chances are you'll want to fight Elraine with one of the guest parties. Not only do you lose entirely if Frio and Kyaro are defeated, but the guest parties are a good deal stronger. In this and other battles, even if a party is defeated, the enemies will not heal back to full HP, so if you can chisel down a boss's HP to half with one party and finish them off with another, that's a valid strategy. Probably the best party to use is the ToD party, as Mary can be downright broken with her first technique, Moushuuken. Even though bosses do not always stagger when hit, if you set Mary to the party leader and simply go up to Elraine and use Moushuuken over and over again, Elraine won't get to do much at all. Upon defeating Elraine your guest parties will attempt to go off and stop the Dream (or whatever you decided to call the time/space contraption) and disappear. This leaves you with just Frio and Kyaro, and Refill. Next you'll get to witness the first meeting between Kyle and Riara from ToD2; afterwards, Kyle and Roni will join you. ---------- MISSION 2 ---------- Dungeon: Remy Ruins B1 Victory: Save Professor White. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Treasure: Empty Empty You can rearrange parties as you wish from here. So you could put Frio in one party and Kyaro in another. Keep in mind, however, that for the most part, if the team Frio or Kyaro is in is defeated, you fail the mission. So you might not want to split them up just yet. Before this mission starts, in town, Refill will give you some gifts: the Deck Brush and World of One roots for Frio, and the Rashuan Dye and Chosen's Clothes for Kyaro. Using these you'll eventually be able to make the Stan, Genius, Farah, and Colette costumes, though for now you probably won't have enough Gald, or the prereqs for some. None of the doors in the Remy Ruins can be opened yet (they all require the Ancient Key). The two treasure chests that you CAN access are empty. Your only goal is to reach Professor White and save him. There's no boss here, so this should be pretty straightforward. There IS an ominous warning claiming everyone who enters will be turned to stone, and a suspicious looking Medusa panel. However, nothing really happens with it. Once you reach Professor White you'll have to defeat the generic enemies surrounding him, and that's that. You'll read the stone tablet for a clue on how to get deeper into the dungeon, but that's all for now. ---------- MISSION 3 ---------- Dungeon: "God's Eye" Shrine (ToD) Victory: Defeat Barbatos. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Less than 2 teams remain. Treasure: Leather Mantle 222 Gald 333 Gald The big doors in this dungeon require that 2 teams stand in front of them before they can be opened. As a result, if you ever are reduced to one team only, you automatically fail, even if Frio and Kyaro are still intact. Just after you get petrified, Filia will come to save the day. Mary and Filia will then join you as a third team. You'll have to take on Barbatos, from ToD2, now. Using Mary and Moushuuken again works great. If you use Kyle/Roni's team or a team with Refill, be warned that, just like in ToD2, Barbatos counters all magic with Evil Sphere. So turn off spells in the Techniques menu before fighting him. ---------- MISSION 4 ---------- Dungeon: Trial Shrine (ToS) Victory: Defeat the enemies in the shrine. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Treasure: 300 Gald Key Set Talisman Life Bottle Emerald Ring* Hide Coat* Nothing too tricky here, just beat enemies as you go along. There are two treasure chests on an island surrounded by gaps on all sides here. You might be wondering how to get them. The answer is that you can't, for now. However, soon you will get Arche from ToP, who can fly; if you set her as the leader of a party, you'll be able to make the whole party fly to the island and thus you can retrieve those treasures. In this and future maps, such isolated treasures are marked by an asterisk. For now, just head up to the north. Once there you'll run into Thanatos from the previous Narikiri game. He's apparently got Lloyd and Colette under mind control, which is bad news for you. Since there's two of them, it's much harder to interrupt all of their attacks. Still, they're not all that hard; carry a supply of Gummies with you just in case. Afterwards you'll fight with Thanatos himself. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Infinite Moushuuken combo? Yeah, I thought so. You can also try to steal the "Dragon Scale" item from Thanatos, which is the Root necessary to create the Thanatos costume. After finishing this mission, Lloyd and Colette will join you. ---------- MISSION 5 ---------- Dungeon: Dhaos Castle Dungeon (ToP) Victory: Defeat Dhaos. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Arche's team is defeated. Treasure: 500 Gald 600 Gald Poison Check Life Bottle There are a bunch of switches scattered across the map here. By pulling the switches, you'll be able to make bridges across the water. This will allow you to access most parts of the map. Your first goal is to head to the southeast corner and free Arche. Not only is she a character, you need her to finish this map. The reason is there are some switches that cannot be reached by your party. Arche, however, thanks to her flying abilities, can fly over the water easily and trigger the switches for you. Unlike the rest of the locked doors in the dungeon, you need to use Frio's or Kyaro's Thief costume to unlock her door. Afterwards it's just a matter of ganging up on Dhaos. Again, he isn't too tough by himself, just sandwich him from both sides and Moushuuken him or whatever else you want until he's gone. After defeating him, Klarth will join your party. ---------- MISSION 6 ---------- Dungeon: Remy Ruins B2 Victory: Reach the end of the map. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Treasure: None Back to the Remy Ruins for this one. For this and subsequent visits, you'll have to start from floor B1 and proceed downwards. As soon as you reach the stairs with one team, you'll be transported to the next floor; there's no need to move ALL of your parties to the stairs. Again, none of the treasure chests are accessible at this point in the game. Your goal is simply to reach the area leading up to the stairs to B3. When you get there, however, you'll have to take on both Dhaos and Elraine at the same time. Lucky you, eh? Elraine's Delta Ray and other spells get very annoying very quickly, so focus on her first. Once she's gone, Dhaos will once again be relatively easy. During this battle, if you feel daring, you CAN attempt to steal from Dhaos and Elraine. Doing so successfully (which is not too likely) will give you the Roots needed to create their costumes. Since you can't normally get the boss costume Roots until after finishing the game, this is well worth it, if you're patient enough. (You won't be able to create the costumes right away, however, as you need Cless's costume to make Dhaos and Riara's costume to make Elraine.) After this dungeon, the shops will have new stuff for you to buy, so be sure to check them out. ---------- MISSION 7 ---------- Dungeon: Time Drift Victory: Save 2 Heroes in 30 Turns. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. No turns remain. Treasure: Magic Mist Hourglass Thief Dagger Your goal here is to save Riara and Rutee. In order to do so, you have to approach Riara with a party that has Kyle in it and Rutee with a party that has Mary in it. If you approach the heroes with an unrelated party, you'll end up fighting them instead! Incidentally this can be worth it, as you can steal the Roots needed to create their costumes from them. Getting Roots for the non-boss characters is pretty simple, however (just a matter of using them a few times and talking to them while they're in town) so this isn't as important as stealing from Dhaos or Elraine or Thanatos earlier. After completing the mission, you should come back here. Inexplicably, Chester will now be here. Simply approach him with a party with Arche in it to recruit him. After getting him, you're done with the Time Drift... for now, at least. ---------- MISSION 8 ---------- Dungeon: Palace of Despair (ToE) Victory: Save Farah and Keel. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Treasure: Miracle Gummy Life Bottle 1400 Gald* Black Robe* Paralyze Check* Frypan* Once you begin this mission, Rid will join your team. The elevators can only be used by one team at a time, so send your stronger teams first. Also be sure to put Arche as the leader of a party so you can grab the treasure chests sitting on the island north of your starting position. Chase Farah and Keel as you go along; you'll end up fighting them. Upon defeating them, they'll wait in front of the big door. Upon approaching them again, you'll have to defeat them both at the same time. Keel's spells are annoying so take him out first (he doesn't have much in the way of HP so if you focus on him he'll be gone quick). Afterwards, both you'll see a fishy event. Looks like you're not the only ones with costuming powers. Farah and Keel (the real ones) will join you now. ---------- MISSION 9 ---------- Dungeon: Gate of Reincarnation (East/West) (ToD2) Victory: Save the 3 Captives. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Judas or Lion's team is defeated. Less than 4 teams remain. Treasure: 4000 Gald Elixir Life Bottle Here you'll actually have a choice. If you choose the east gate, you'll get Lion, whereas if you choose the west gate, you get Judas. It is not possible to get both Lion and Judas in the same playthrough, so make sure you choose your favorite. (You WILL be able to make the costume for whoever you didn't get, so don't worry about it too much). At the beginning of this map, whichever party member you WON'T get afterwards joins your team. You need to keep at least four of your parties alive because you need to step on all four switches on this map. Make sure you grab the items first. Next just defeat the generic enemies that attack to complete the mission. You'll be using a team of Lion and Judas for this last battle - surreal, eh? ---------- MISSION 10 ---------- Dungeon: Remy Ruins B3 Victory: Capture Pony and Clyte. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Treasure: 1500 Gald 4000 Gald Mental Ring Silk Hat Krona Symbol Emerald Ring As before, you'll have to go through B1 and B2 first to get here. Your end goal is to capture Pony and get to the end of the map. They'll use their trickery to make every enemy team look like them, so you'll have to look for the real one. They also run away from you. Once you've defeated all of the regular monsters, the real Pony and Clyte will show up and try to escape. Looks like their masked proteges are a step ahead of them, however... The real Pony and Clyte have traps laid out before them; if your party has a Thief in it, though, you can avoid the trap. Even if you do get caught, you can simply attack Pony and Clyte with a different party. They're not too strong in battle, so just use the same tactics as usual. You'll be able to pick from Missions 11-13 in whichever order. The shops will once again have new things for you to buy (including new Roots) so check them out. ---------- MISSION 11 ---------- Dungeon: Forest of the Elves (ToP) Victory: Defeat all enemies. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Treasure: 2000 Gald Emerald Ring Elven Boots 2000 Gald Elven Lore Krona Symbol Annoyingly on this map, you cannot use magic. Also, you will not be able to bring Refill or Arche along, as they are half-elves (not that you'd want to since no magic makes them worthless). Stan, Cless, and Nanaly will show up as this battle starts. Mint is also here and she'll heal you for free if you approach her. All you have to do is defeat the enemies; none of them are particularly strong so you shouldn't run into too much trouble. The last three items on the treasure list are gained after clearing the mission. ---------- MISSION 12 ---------- Dungeon: Nekonin Village Victory: Defeat all enemies. Failure: Enemies reach Elder's house. Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Treasure: None No treasures here, just a bunch of enemies. You can't let any of the enemies reach the Elder's house. When the stage starts, you'll be able to set 4 traps around the map. Just set them up near the chokepoints leading to the village. The first enemies will come from the southwest, so be prepared. You should always leave one team in front of the Elder's house just in case. Eventually, some monsters will appear right next to the Elder's house. When this happens, Fog from ToE will show up to help you out. Use him to take out the enemies near the house. Finally take care of the enemies that show up from the southeast. Simply stop those and you'll have finished the mission. ---------- MISSION 13 ---------- Dungeon: Governor's House (ToE) Victory: Stop 2 Copy Machines. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Harold's team is defeated. Treasure: 2000 Gald 3000 Gald Elixir Miracle Gummy Emerald Ring Blue Talisman Misty Symbol Mental Ring Once you begin, you'll immediately be forced to fight with HRX-2. Those of you who've played ToD2 will know what's next... upon defeating HRX-2, you'll be joined by Harold. You need to keep her alive, as she can stop the Copy machines (the blue columns) on this map. Most of the Copy machines are fake, however. When you do find a real one, Harold will need a few turns to disable the device. Surprise enemies will attack her, so make sure you have another party escorting her. Have your other teams go around grabbing the treasure chests and take out the enemies in advance. The real machines (at least for me) were the upper left one in the upper left room, and the upper right one in the lower right room. Afterwards, Shizel, from ToE, is all that's left, in the middle. Her spells hurt, but since they require casting time, if you can get her in a pincer attack and constantly attack her, she won't be able to get too many spells off. Meredy will join your party here. ---------- MISSION 14 ---------- Dungeon: Human Ranch (ToS) Victory: Stop the Copy Machine. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Zelos/Shiina's team is defeated. Treasure: 2000 Gald 2500 Gald Elixir Fox Mask Black Costume Thunder Mantle Fairy Ring Miracle Gummy After finishing all three of the previous missions, Nancy and a new shop will show up in town now in the northeast. Aside from some food ingredients that you couldn't get before, you'll also be able to get quite a few new Roots, so be sure to visit. Harold won't be able to go with you for this mission, but she'll teach you how to disable the copy machines. For me, the real one was in the upper right. Watch out for the fake Zelos/Shiina teams here. Not all of the Zelos or Shiina icons on the map are Zelos/Shiina teams, but some are. You should probably focus on Zelos first since his moves can be quite annoying. The doors, like usual, can be opened with either the Thief special ability or the key sets. With the real Zelos and Shiina vs. the fake Zelos and Shiina, focus on Shiina first, since she has low HP. Also remember that Zelos can heal. After this mission, the real Zelos and Shiina will join you. ---------- MISSION 15 ---------- Dungeon: Traitor Fortress Victory: Defeat 7 Heroes in 30 turns. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. No turns remain. Treasure: None You won't be able to put Klarth, Filia, Keel, Harold, or Refill in any of your teams, and Genius and Kratos will show up as well. Within 30 turns, you'll have to defeat all 7 of those heroes. To make things worse, you can't use any magic, like in the Forest of the Elves, so the mages you DO have left won't be too useful. The generic enemies too are a little stronger than usual; if you run into problems, go back to an earlier map and level up your characters. The map is small and you really shouldn't have any problems chasing the heroes down. Defeating them is another matter. They seem to cast ridiculously fast here, and each one comes with a rather suspicious looking Costumer. You'll definitely want to take out the mage first, as their spells will quickly annihilate your party if you don't. Afterwards, Genius and Kratos will join you. ---------- MISSION 16 ---------- Dungeon: Remy Ruins B4 Victory: Reach the end of the map. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Treasure: None Hope you've been levelling up Frio and Kyaro well, as this time you'll have to reach the bottom of the Remy Ruins with those two alone. Make sure you disband your other teams, or the game won't let you start the mission. Obviously, you should pick a good balance of costumes for the pair. There's not much in the way of real strategy; if you find things hard, simply go back to other maps, level the pair up, buy new Costumes, and so on. By this point you may have been lucky enough to get some Ancient Key drops from enemies you've fought, meaning you can open some of the doors and get the treasures. See the Mission 25 list for a list of the treasures. Especially rare is the "Ether" Root which will let you make the KOS-MOS costume. This is found on the fourth floor, in the room on the bottom row, second from the left. ---------- MISSION 17 ---------- Dungeon: Magitechnology Research Lab (ToP) Victory: Obtain the "Key of Light". Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Treasure: 2500 Gald Frypan Mental Ring 2500 Gald Jet Boots Blue Talisman You'll meet Suzu as this mission begins. The cannons on this map fire in a specific pattern, so once you know the pattern, it'll be easy to avoid them. They hurt if you get hit, so watch out. Enemies will disappear if they get hit, so use this to your advantage. Suzu will join your party afterwards. All you have to do is reach the top of the map to clear this mission. After this mission, you must pick either the Cave of Ice or the Labyrinth of Fire. The major difference is that if you go to the Cave of Ice, you'll get Chelsea in a few missions, whereas if you go to the Labyrinth of Fire, you'll get Woodrow. You can still recruit whichever one you didn't pick up later, so it's really your choice. Once you do pick one, you won't be able to return to town for the next three missions, so stock up on any items you need. ---------- MISSION 18 ---------- Dungeon: Cave of Ice Victory: Find the exit and leave the cave. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Treasure: Gungnir* Freeze Check* Protect Ring* Persha Boots* 4000 Gald Aqua Mantle Elixir Krona Symbol Flare Mantle Miracle Gummy The tough part about this map is that every turn, your party will take 10% HP worth of damage. However, if you equip a Freeze Check or Aqua Mantle on your characters, you can avoid this damage. Make sure everyone is equipped as such. There are rocks lying around that you can only break if you have a Martial Artist, or a Driller, in your party. Celsius is the boss of this dungeon. You can steal from her to get the Celsius's Tear Root; also, the Gungnir you pick up in this dungeon is the Root for the Valkyrie, who is the boss of the Labyrinth of Fire. So you can get both of their costumes even if you don't fight them both. ---------- MISSION 19 ---------- Dungeon: Labyrinth of Fire Victory: Find the exit and leave the labyrinth. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Treasure: Aqua Mantle* Flare Mantle* Protect Ring* Resist Ring* 3 Gald 30 Gald 300 Gald 3000 Gald Elixir Celsius's Tear Paralyze Check Poison Check On this map if you step on the fiery tiles, you'll take damage. Like the Cave of Ice, however, this damage can be avoided, in this case by equipping Flare Mantles on your characters. The boss of this dungeon is the Valkyrie. Like the other dungeon, you can pick up the Celsius's Tear here, and you can steal from the Valkyrie to get the Gungnir to create her costume. ---------- MISSION 20 ---------- Dungeon: Battle Coliseum Victory: Defeat Kongman Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Treasure: Jet Boots Life Bottle 100 Gald Elixir You cannot get the treasures in the rooms on the east or west sides until you defeat Kongman. So defeat him first. This will trigger an event that starts the next mission. Note that you cannot come back to this map later, so make sure you grab the four treasures that you can before you defeat Kongman. Two of the treasure chests are Pandoras, so be careful. ---------- MISSION 21 ---------- Dungeon: Battle Coliseum Victory: Obtain the Traveller's Key. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. A treasure is stolen. Treasure: (Red Chests) Thunder Mantle Misty Symbol Fairy Ring Traveller's Key (Blue Chests) 5555 Gald 800 Gald Krona Symbol Guitar New enemies will have shown up, and they'll try to steal the treasures from you. The first thing you'll want to do is set two tiger traps とらばさみ in front of the steps leading to the treasure rooms. You'll also want to make thief/ninja-type characters the leaders of your parties, so you can move further with each turn. In other worse, Suzu, Shiina, and the Thief/Ninja outfits will really help you out here. Partway through, either Woodrow or Chelsea (depending on what dungeon you picked earlier) and Johnny will show up to assist you. Again, you cannot return to this map later, so make sure you grab all of the treasures now. Upon defeating all the enemies, all of the red chests will automatically open and you'll get the key you need; make sure you grab the blue chests before you do so, because they won't open automatically. ---------- MISSION 22 ---------- Dungeon: Time Drift Victory: Obtain the "Future Key" in 30 turns. Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. The "Future Key" is stolen. No turns remain. Treasure: 6000 Gald Emerald Ring Gold Abacus Krona Symbol Magic Mist Misty Symbol Your goal is to get the Future Key before your evil twins do. Unfortunately it seems like pure luck as to what treasure/enemy has the key. Here is also a great opportunity to get more party members. Woodrow or Chelsea will be here (depending on who you didn't get earlier); approach them with the other member of the pair to recruit them. Approach Presea with Genius to recruit her. Afterwards, come back and approach Regal with Presea, approach Reis with Farah, and Chat with Meredy to get them. ---------- MISSION 23 ---------- Dungeon: Ancient City Victory: Arrive at the far switch. Failure: Frio's team is defeated. Treasure: 5000 Gald 6000 Gald Elixir Persha Boots Before this mission you'll have to split up into two teams. Frio's team will head to the Ancient City, while Kyaro's team will go to the Floating Fortress. I definitely suggest you send Arche with Kyaro so you can get the treasures there. You'll also want to put Suzu with Frio for her fast movement skills. Every turn you spend here, more enemies will appear, and barriers will block your way. You'll want to get to the upper left, where Yggdrasil is, as fast as possible. Defeat him and finish the mission; you'll then be taken over to Kyaro's team. ---------- MISSION 24 ---------- Dungeon: Floating Fortress Victory: Arrive at the far switch. Failure: Kyaro's team is defeated. Treasure: 5000 Gald 6000 Gald Elixir Blue Talisman Hitting the red switches here will make bridges for you to proceed on. As before, you can send Arche on ahead to hit switches otherwise inaccessible to you. Upon reaching the end, Barbatos lies in wait for you. Again, use the standard pincer attacks and keep on him. ---------- MISSION 25 ---------- Dungeon: Remy Ruins B4 Victory: Defeat Evil Frio and Evil Kyaro Failure: Frio/Kyaro's team is defeated. Treasure: (B1) 3000 Gald Black Belt (B2) 6000 Gald Hunter Bow Feet Symbol Elixir 5000 Gald Piyohan (B3) 10000 Gald Drill (B4) 10000 Gald 15000 Gald Ether Jet Boots 20000 Gald Elixir Excalibur (Afterwards) Miracle Pendant Dragon Scale Dark Orb Bloody Axe Derris Emblem Crucis Crystal Like before, you'll have to pass through the first three floors first. Every time you descend a floor, you'll have to leave behind a party; the enemies here are also tougher than before so be careful. To open the doors here that lead to the treasures, you need to get Ancient Keys. These are rare drops (3%) on a number of enemies throughout the game, such as the Dark Swords in the Governor's House and Magitechnology Research Lab, and the Bandersnatches in the Ancient City. Stock up on a good number of them, earn Technical Smashes to up your chances of getting them, and use Lloyd/Colette's Rare Getter combination title to make your day easier. At the bottom, you'll have to defeat Evil Frio and Evil Kyaro. There will be a total of three battles with them. The first battle they'll be dressed as a generic Knight and Martial Artist, so they should be no problem. The second battle is with Lion and Mint. Mint's healing is what makes it tough, so take her out first. Finally, they'll come at you as Yggdrasil and Shizel. Again, Shizel's magic is what makes it tough, so try and take her out first. If you're about Level 50 you should be fine. Upon defeating them you'll get a whole bunch of Roots (needed to create the boss Costumes). Head back to town and enjoy the ending. 5. SIDE QUESTS ARENA After the Arena missions, you can come back and fight each of the Tales main heroes (Cless, Stan, Rid, Kyle, and Lloyd). You can't change clothes between battles, but you can use items, so just carry a good stock. Afterwards you'll fight good ol' Lilith. Beat her and she'll give you the Golden Ladle, which you can use to make Lilith's costume. DEMON KING JABABA After beating the game, if you head down to the Remy Ruins B4 again, this time the Demon King Jababa will be waiting for you. He's just an extra boss, and you can actually come back and fight him as many times as you want, even if you beat him. TOWER OF DRUAGA After beating the game, buy the Excalibur in town. This will allow you to make Gil (the hero of Tower of Druaga)'s costume. Now with Frio dressed as Gil, talk to Paula over at the Cypress Garden. You'll now be able to access the Tower of Druaga. There are ten floors here. Just like the original Tower of Druaga, if you do a specific thing on each floor, you can get a treasure: Floor 1: Defeat three slimes (Apple Gummy) Floor 2: Touch the upper wall (Life Bottle) Floor 3: Encounter the Phantom Knight and run away (Miracle Gummy) Floor 4: Press the Start button (Elixir) Floor 5: Encounter the Wizard and run away (1000 Gald) Floor 6: Defeat the Red Roper (Jet Boots) Floor 7: Touch the upper left corner and proceed down the wall to the lower left, then touch the upper right corner and proceed down the wall to the lower right (Fairy Ring) Floor 8: Open the bottom treasure chest first, then the top, then the middle (10000 Gald) Floor 9: Defeat the blue enemies (Druaga apears, boss fight) Floor 10: Open the second from the bottom, second from the top, center treasure chests. (RC Rod, BC Rod, Apple Gummy) 6. COSTUMES/TECHNIQUES LIST The costumes are listed here in order of their number in the costume checklist. Each costume will describe what root is needed to make that costume, prerequisite costumes to make that costume if any, how to get the root, and then a list of the techniques available to that costume. Note that for the Tales characters, the way you get each of their roots is simply by making them like you, then talking to them in town. To get characters to like you, simply deploy them on a few missions and talk to them in town whenever possible. You'll eventually get their Root. なりきりし Costumer Default Costume けんし Knight Needs Swordsmanship Book けんじゅつしょ まじんけん Majinken (Lvl 1, 4 TP) Creates a shockwave that travels along the ground. らいじんけん Raijinken (Lvl 3, 6 TP) Thrust with a lightning strike. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q. Why can't I perform some of my moves? A. Powerful moves (usually described as 'can only be done in a pinch') cannot be performed just by setting them to a button. You must also fulfill two conditions in order to perform them. First, the character must have had full HP at some point during the current battle. Second, the character's HP must currently be very low (in the red). Only then can the move be performed, and only once per battle. Q. What's up with Taiko no Tatsujin? A. It's basically a mini-version of Namco's musical rhythm game, Taiko no Tatsujin. Press B on the blue faces and A on the red faces with the proper timing. The better you do, the more damage you do. Q. Can I get both Lion and Judas? A. No. You can get both of their costumes, but you cannot get both of the actual characters. 10.
