Not only that, but I have also slightly reformatted the guide and added in a better legal section. AKA one with no typos. :P All Ace Coins and Yoshi Eggs are next update. After that I’ll be wrapping up this guide. Wooray! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Saturday, July 28th, 2001 - Version 0.5 Well this update is quite a substantial one. I finished the walkthrough for all of world 5. Along with that, I have also added in three other sections to this document. One is how to post this FAQ on your website, the second shows signs on whether or not your a certified Mario Advance Maniac, and I have finally got around to including the credits. :P The walkthrough will be completely finished next update, which is in a few days. Then it’s on to finishing the other sections. I’m slowly closing in on finishing this FAQ, but having fun none the less. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Monday, July 23, 2001 - Version 0.4 I’m back from vacation everyone! I have saltwater shoved in my lungs, sand rammed up my ears and the South Carolina girls in sky blue bikinis are but a glean in my eye. Can you guess where I’ve been? :P Well anyway, enough about me. I finished the walkthrough for all of world 4. The walkthrough should be finished in the next update or two. I’ve been playing too much Castevania: Circle of the Moon. My bad. 92.5% clearance rate however! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Friday, July 13, 2001 - Version 0.3 Thank god I finished the entire walkthrough for world 3. That world was so long and boring. I’m off to my vacation now, so I wouldn’t be answering my email or updating this document for a week. If I told you where I was going, I’d have to kill you. :P See you sometime next week! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Wednesday, July 10, 2001 - Version 0.2 I’ve been playing Super Mario Advance so much I actually ran through a pair of batteries in only two days! I love this game! :P Well the entire FAQ part of the document is finished and the walkthrough is done for world 1 and 2. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Monday, July 8, 2001 - Version 0.1 Woohoo! I’m back baby yea! I’ve decided to make fewer updates, but more “meat” in each one, so don’t expect a update everyday. :P Thank god I chose a Gameboy Advance game this time, since my PC is an another room then my game consoles. Getting the framework of a document is the hardest part. The run through of basic gameplay is almost finished. Walkthrough for all of World 1 and the first course of World 2 is finished... I need to add in Ace coins and the 1-UP mushroom locations. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - You say ta-ma-to, I say tah-mah-to. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TABLE OF CONTENTS * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * 1. Typical Mario Story ============================================================================ This comes directly from the manual. Why bother writing a better story when someone else has said it best? :P Subcon’s Story One night, Mario had a mysterious dream. He dreamed he was climbing a long stairway that led up and up to a closed door. When he reached the top and opened the door, he found himself gazing out at a world he had never seen, stretching out to the horizon. Then he heard a voice say, “This is Subcon, the land of dreams. The evil toad, Wart, has used his magic to lay a curse upon the land. Please defeat Wart and free us from his spell. Oh - and remember that Wart hates vegetables. Hurry! We need your help!” And then a bolt of lightning suddenly split the sky, and Mario woke up to find himself on the floor. He had fallen out of bed! A few days later, Mario and his friends hiked to some nearby mountains for a picnic. Upon reaching their picnic spot, they looked around and found a small cave. When they entered the cave, they were amazed to discover the land Mario had seen in his dream stretching out before them. How catchy! :P ============================================================================ 3. Game Controls ============================================================================ Here are the controls for Super Mario Advance. There pretty basic, that is considering the Game Boy Advance only has 6 buttons and a control-pad. A Button -- The most used button in the game. Press the A button to make your character jump, or confirm something on a menu. B Button -- Use the B button to grab enemies or uproot plants. With the object in hand, press B again to chuck it away. Also a cancel button on menus in the game. Start Button -- This button pauses your game. Also can be used as a confirm button on many menus. Select Button -- Almost as useless as the R button but not quite. On any menu, pressing the select button moves the pointer down only. Why not use the control pad? Control Pad -- Well this one’s a big duh. Use the control pad to move your character throughout all of Super Mario Advance. Also moves the pointer on menus. L Button -- This button controls a really nice feature added into the Super Mario Bros. 2 portion of Super Mario Advance. Press the L button to make the screen scroll slightly up or down to get a better view. Your character has to be stationary for it to work though. R Button -- After shifting through fifty billion emails, I’ve come to the conclusion the R button has a purpose. While walking with the control pad, press the R button to run. Perfect when you have an object in your hand, that way you may run without chucking it away. Now, stop emailing me. ============================================================================ 4. Learn the Basic Gameplay ============================================================================ Discussed below are the skills you will need to master in order to beat the Super Mario Bros. 2 portion of Super Mario Advance. All are pretty simple to learn. I mean, this is a basic Mario platformer after all. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- JUMPING SKILLS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jump ~ Use the A button to jump over obstacles like pits, hills, (A) and enemies. Also jump to reach higher places like ledges and secret areas. Super Jump ~ Sometimes certain ledges and places can only be accessed (-v + A) with a jump higher then normal -- a super jump. Hold down on the control pad and your character will get into a crouching position. Wait for your character to flash like a light bulb then press A. Your character will jump much higher in the air then normal. Running Jump ~ Catch some big air. If you make your character run (-> + A) forward, and jump while running, it will make him/her cover much more ground. Good for large pits. Glide Jump ~ If you happen to be smart enough to pick Peach as your (PEACH ONLY) character, (hint :P ) then you can platform the game much easier with this special glide jump. Press A to jump like normal, but instead of letting go of the button, hold it down. Peach will float in the air. Press the control pad to steer in the direction you want her to float. Floating lasts about two seconds, tops. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- LIFTING, CHUCKING, AND DIGGING ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Grab ~ The B button allows you to grab a hold of plants or (B) enemies. Simply stand above the red tuff of the plant sticking out the ground to uproot something. Or you can jump on top of enemies and scoop them up. Chuck ~ When your character has and object in its grasp, just (B) press B to chuck it aside when you want too. Digging ~ In some places of worlds 2 and 6 you will be required to (B) dig down through the soft sand. Stand on top of the sand and press B to dig down through one layer. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- IF I ONLY HAD A HEART ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Keep your character alive! Sounds simple right? Well there are a few ways to get health. Whenever you start a course you have two hits. These are symbolized by the health meter of two hearts on the left side of the screen. You can find growth hearts to replenish your health if you get hit by these following methods: 1.) Sometimes growth hearts are found floating in the air. This usually occurs in tricky areas of a level or right before a Birdo/world boss. 2.) When pulling up plants, sometimes a plant will release a growth heart when it is uprooted allowing you to collect the health. 3.) If you grab a giant-sized enemy, chuck it at the ground and it will roll over releasing a growth heart into the air. You can repeat this process until the enemy dies or you accidentally throw the giant enemy at something. 4.) If you chuck some type vegetable, a key, a mushroom block, a red shell, or another enemy, and it hits at least two other enemies in a chain reaction, it will release a growth heart into the air. 5.) If you hit any enemy in the game with a red shell and it kills it, you get a growth heart. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CLIMBING ALONG ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learn to climb up silver chains or vines in levels. Press up or down on the control pad to accomplish this. Hoping between chains takes a bit more practice, but just make sure to press a hard right or left when doing so. Also, watch out for Hoopsters who like to glide along vines and cause damage to your character. They pop out of no where I tell you. Like Jehovah’s Witnesses or Mormons on bicycles. But that’s another story. :P ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- EXPLORING THOSE JARS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes jars, but not like the type your old grandma pickles things in. These red and white painted jars dot the landscape. Jump on top of them and press down to enter. Most of them contain a 1-UP mushroom or at least a growth heart. Try to enter any jars you see, doing so might get you health when your feeling a bit parched. Some jars wouldn’t let you enter them. Suspicious? You bet. See the subspace section below about those. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TWINKLE TWINKLE LITTLE STAR ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- In every course there will red cherries floating around in the air. Collect five of these and an yellow invincibility star will float into the screen. Collect and you will flash and become invincible for about 15 seconds. Use the star wisely as it can make a part of the level extremely easy. Also know the right time to collect that fifth cherry. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUBSPACE SHENANIGANS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sometimes in your plant-grabbing fury, you might uncover a glass flask of red potion. Don’t waste these, as there quite valuable, since there’s only three max in each course. Chucking down the red potion causes a door to appear, leading into subspace. Subspace is basically the same as the level, except very shadowy and the objects are mirror images of the fathers. When entering subspace, everything on screen will be locked into place. Grabbing any plants on screen with give you coins to use in the slot machines. If you chose the right place to throw down the potion, a Subspace Mushroom will be in view. Grab it to increase your health total by one heart. Oh yea, if there’s a jar you couldn’t enter normally on screen, it is access into a warp zone. To enter the warp zone, make sure the jar is on screen then throw down a red potion. Enter subspace, then enter the jar. Ta Dah! But you wouldn’t be needing these, correct? Because your an honest player. Although my moneys’ on the warp zones winning. What? :P ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLAY SOME SLOTS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- When you finally finish a course in the game, you will have a chance to play the slot machine before moving on with the adventure. What your gambling is any coins you found in subspace in the course you have just beaten. The prizes you win are various quantities of 1-UPs. Winnings Chart +=========================================+ | One Red Cherry ---> 1-UP | | At least two Red Cherries ---> 2-UP | | Three Red Cherries ---> 3-UP | | Three Lucky 7’s ---> 5-UP | | Picture of Any Three ---> 2-UP | +=========================================+ *Note* Cherries have to appear in sequential order. So if one red cherry appeared, but was in the second slot, you get nothing. :P *Note2* Also, a new feature has been added into the game that wasn’t in the original. You may wage more then one coin at a time each time you spin. The max per spin being your coin total of course. The amount of coins wagered is multiplied by your winning. -- So if you wagered 5 coins, and won a 5-UP, you’d get a whopping 25-UP. Did you know that in 1988 Nintendo was sued by a parent group claiming quote “The slot machine in Super Mario Bros. 2 is a flagrant attempt to try and get our children addicted to gambling.” God… they need to take a pill. :P ============================================================================ 5. Collectable Items ============================================================================ You mean when grabbing, pulling up plants, along with exploring, you actually find stuff? Yeah indeed you do. Here’s a list of the stuff you can find in your journeys. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- HEALTH TYPES ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Growth Heart - Red colored heart. Restores one hit to your health. Subspace Mushroom - Spotted toadstool mushroom. Only found in subspace. Collect it to add another hit to your health meter. 1-UP Mushroom - Red and white mushroom with 1-UP insignia on it. Always found off the beaten path. Usually in bubbles or in plants. Can also be found by striking five or more enemies with one projectile. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- PROJECTILES ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sprout - Uprooted from a plant. Mini-sized vegetable that’s harder to hit anything with when thrown. Vegetables - Uprooted from a plant. Full and plump sized turnip that can easily be thrown to take out an enemy or two from a distance. Giant Vegetables - Uprooted from a plant. Huge sized turnip that takes longer to be plucked from the ground. Can take out rows of enemies if skillfully used. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- BLOCKS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- POW Block - Black block with red trim and the insignia POW on it. Chuck be chucked to hit the ground and kill all enemies on screen. Super POW Block - Just like a normal POW block except four times its size. When chucked to the ground, it bounces a few times killing enemies in several screens. Mushroom Block - Red and white colored block shaped like a mushroom. Chuck them at enemies, stack them to make barriers and steps. Very versatile. Dirt Block - Dirt blocks are brown in color and always stacked to form walls that block your way. Use bombs to clear them out. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- WEAPONS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bomb - Uprooted from plants or chucked by Mouser the world 1 boss. They have a five second fuse so grab them and chuck them away quickly. The explosion has a two inch radius. Red Shell - Uprooted from plants. Chuck it on the ground and watch it skate along. Takes out any enemies in its path, but bounces off of walls. Invincibility Star - Yellow flashing star. Floats onto screen when five cherries are collected. Grants short invincibility. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPECIALTY ITEMS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Golden Key - Gold colored key that allows you to enter locked doors only when its in your characters hands. Beware, with the key in hand the guardian mask, Phanto, will chase you from screen to screen. Ace Coins - Five of these coins are hidden in every course. Trying to get one with test your Mario skills. Collect all five in every course to rechieve a 100% game clearance on the select screen. Does nothing, but gives bragging rights. Check the section below to see all the Ace Coin locations. Yoshi Eggs - Two Yoshi eggs are hidden in every level only when you do a certain thing… Want details? Check out the Yoshi’s Challenge section below in this document. ============================================================================ 6. Know Your Foes ============================================================================ When Nintendo updated Super Mario Bros. 2, they were also nice enough to include some new baddies. Including one of my favorites, the giant Ninji. I really love that guy. :P Listed below are all the enemies you will find in the game. This list doesn’t include bosses, since they’re written right into the walkthrough for you to read. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SHY GUY This guy is the easiest enemy of them all. (Varieties: Red and blue.) Wearing a coat and mask, toss them aside if they get in your way. GIANT SHY GUY Like there smaller cousins, these guys are a (Varieties: Red and blue.) pushover. Though they take longer to pick up, use there size to your advantage. Throw them to take out multiple enemies. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- NINJI Think of a Shy Guy but in a black Ninja suit. These guys are more annoying as the hop and run about. Put them out of there kung-fu ways. GIANT NINJI Oh! My favorite enemy in the game and a new addition as well. Just like a Ninji but larger in size. The good part about these guys is they only hop, not run. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SNIFIT Looks like a Shy Guy’s evil brother, except (Varieties: Black and blue.) this guy is kind enough to shoot a stream of BBs from its mouth. Dodge the BBs and chuck something at this stupid pest. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- BEEZO In certain levels Beezos are abundant. They are like yellow Shy Guys that fly straight at you attempting to injure your character. Just get out of their way and you’ll be fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TWEETER A flightless bird that hops along the ground. Pretty harmless unless you bump into them. Take them out with a simple chuck. PORCUPO Porcupos are porcupines with lots of purple spines on there back. Slow moving across the ground, jump over them or chuck an item at them. Look, but don’t touch or you’ll take damage. They like to hang out in groups. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- TROUTER Trouter is a fish that likes to hang out in waterfalls and streams. Hoping up and down from the water below, dodge them or jump on there heads as a bridge across. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ALBATOSS Yes Al-ba-toss. Do you get the pun? These red birds fly though the air at you the Beezos, except dropping off Bob-Ombs on the ground near you. Dodging the Bob-Ombs is the only thing you can do. BOB-OMB Large black bomb with a face and legs. Will run after you and explode when it touches your character’s body. Just dodge them like you do an IRS agent. Dropped by Albatoss, but you can sometimes find them when uprooting plants. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- PIDGIT Also known as the Flying Rat. Basically a bird sitting on top of a flying carpet. As the carpet hovers, wait for it to swoop down, then jump on top and chuck away the Pidgit. Catch a free ride. Better then the city bus. All those old people with bags of cans always clicking. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- COBRAT Red colored cobras that inhabit the sand worlds of 2 and 6. They like to hide in jars and below the ground, but you can still see their eyes sticking up. They shoot BBs from their mouths. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- PANSER This is one hot-headed flower. It shoots a stream of fireballs from its head. The more dangerous ones walk along the ground while sending off the projectiles. Run or jump past when you can, and get far away. POKEY The other plant enemy in the game. Pokey is a slow-move green cactus. It takes a vegetable to take out each of the five sections. You’re better off jumping over it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- OSTRO This guy is a sad excuse for a cowboy. It’s just a red Shy Guy riding on the back of a pink Ostrich. Jump on top and pluck the red Shy Guy off, then chuck it to hit the pink Ostrich killing them both. AUTOBOMB Like the Ostro, but slightly different. A red Shy Guy riding on the back of what looks like the Super-Duper Death Star Stupomitron 2000 Laser Cannon. Just jump on top and toss aside the red Shy Guy then ride along on the cannon. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- FLURRY A funny creature made of snow. Only found in world 4, it skates along the ice trying to bump into you causing damage. SPARK Made of electricity, this orb floats across any surface it touches at a slow of fast speed. Just jump over them and move on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- PHANTO What look like reject opera masks. They remain asleep guarding a golden key until the key is moved by your character. Then in their rampage they follow you from screen to screen, as long as the key is in your hands. ============================================================================ 7. Choose Your Character ============================================================================ Before you enter start playing a course in Super Mario Bros. 2 you must choose which of the four characters you wish to play. Every character has its strong points, but some characters are better at certain skills then others. Factoring in your Mario-playing experience is also another aspect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mario Yawn I guess… pretty average. Fairly good at everything +-------------+ and poor at nothing. Most versatile of all the characters | POWER ****. | but I don’t like how he plays. That’s just my opinion | SPEED ****. | though, whatever floats your boat. | JUMP ****. | +-------------+ Rating: Good for intermediate players. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Luigi Though his power and speed may be lacking, he more then +-------------+ makes up for it with his potent jump. It’s the strongest | POWER ***.. | jump of all the characters. In a skilled players hands | SPEED ***.. | he’s unmatched, but sloppy in someone inexperienced. | JUMP ***** | +-------------+ Rating: THE choose for advanced players. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Toad Toads jump is absolutely pathetic and the weakest of all +-------------+ the characters. However, he handles great in experienced | POWER ***** | hands. Advanced players should choose this character if | SPEED ***** | they prefer using his unmatched item-chucking skills. | JUMP **... | +-------------+ Rating: Great for advanced players. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Peach Wow, at first glance Peach looks the worst, right? Wrong. +-------------+ Though her stats are the weakest, her glide jump is just | POWER **... | perfect for beginners to easily dodge most obstacles. Use | SPEED **... | Peach if your a lazy person too. | JUMP ***.. | +-------------+ Rating: Great for beginners or lazy people like me. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- *IMPORTANT Note* Oh yea, I almost forgot one thing. I have to warn you very carefully about using Toad. Only use Toad if you can take his annoying, screechy, what the heck was Nintendo thinking when they added this voice. There, I said it. Now I want no angry emails about how I didn’t warn you. :P ============================================================================ 8. Walkthrough of the Courses ============================================================================ Welcome to the walkthrough part of this document! This will guide you step by step through the courses of the Super Mario Bros. 2 potion of the game. The other 10% of the game is simply the Super Mario Bros. Battle Room which isn’t really “levels” per say. That is covered in another section of the document. This walkthrough includes how to beat bosses, and finding those pesky Subspace Mushrooms to add more hearts to your health meter. This in turn makes beating the levels much easier. It wouldn’t cover all the mushrooms, only ones that can be found as you go along. The location of every subspace mushroom can be found in another section of the document. All hidden items and extras of the Super Mario Bros. 2 portion of the game can be found in other sections as well. Enjoy! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- WORLD 1 GRASS PLAINS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - - - - - - - - - - Course 1 - - - - - - - - - - -- Area 1, Your First Decent -- Fall out of a magical red door in the sky to the cloud platform below. (Let’s hope not… please…) Travel right and hop off the clouds onto the dirt. Jump up to the blue blocks. Birdo screeches in her(his?) “intimidating” little voice: “This is as far as you go!” When Birdo shoots an egg at you, jump on top of and pick it up. Chuck it back at Birdo to hit her/him. Birdo will die after three shots from the egg. Grab the crystal orb Birdo spits out after it dies. Exit out of the open eagle mouth. COURSE CLEAR ! A Pidgit will fly into view. Wait for it to dive bomb then jump on it’s head. Grab the head and chuck it off. Using the carpet, quickly fly across the pit to the right, dodging all the Beezos that zoom at your head. Land on the ground and grab the first plant you see. <><> Subspace Mushroom #1 <><> Picking up the red potion, chuck it onto the ground the two jars. Proper Way to Display This Guide on Your Site ============================================================================ This FAQ that you are currently reading may only appear on: - GameFAQs The reason being, is that I DIRECTLY send my FAQs there. Not only that, but the webmaster CJayC does a good job of getting the FAQs up and keeping them updated. Along with, rejecting crappy work from the site and checking for plagiarists constantly. HOWEVER, if you want to use my guide, but are not that site listed above, here’s exactly what you do. **** WEBMASTERS PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- What NOT to do: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- <<<<<< DO NOT >>>>>> ...copy and paste this FAQ on your website. I repeat, NOTHING that ends with a “.txt” or “.doc” Don’t make me repeat a third time. In other words, link to the page on GameFAQs where it shows a COMPLETE list of ALL the guides for this game. That way, not only do you get my guide, but access to other peoples as well.
