This is a guide to breeding pokemon. Why breed pokemon? Well, there are several reasons 1) Allows you to have more of a pokemon. Even some rare pokemon (such as the starters or the pokemon from fossils) can be bred, so these can be traded for other pokemon. 2) Some abilities are harder to find on certain monsters. Once you find one, you can make more of the monster with that ability. 3) A monsters stats are controlable to an extent. Certain moves, such as Hidden Power will vary based on stats, and by breeding, you have a better chance of getting the results you want than continuously catching wild pokemon. 4) Some pokemon, such as Cleffa and Pichu, can only be found by using breeding. Also, they will know moves it's parents could never learn. 5) Moves can be passed from one species to another. For example, a Skarmory can never learn Drill Peck through level or TMs, but it can learn it through breeding (see section VI for details) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- II) Breeding Requirements and Child Species ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So you want to breed pokemon, huh? Let's start with the basics. First off, you will need a male and a female. They must have at least one egg group in common, see section VIII for compatible mates. The child will always be the same family as the FEMALE, in the lowest evolutionary stage (exception: Wobbufet and Marill, see below). Finally, you must put the male and female pokemon together in the daycare center on route 117. The child will always be level 5 coming out of its egg. It's OT will match the trainer holding the egg when it hatches. It's nature will be random, or at least I haven't found a pattern yet. If it says they prefere to play with other pokemon, there is no chance of getting an egg. The more friendly the two are, the faster they will produce an egg (usually, it's all based on chance). Even if it says "A doesn't seem to like B", this will still produce an egg, it will simply take longer. As for Merill and Wobbufet. In order to get their lowest forms, you must make one parent hold a Sea Incense for a Azurill, or else you will get a Merill. Likewise, one parent must hold a Lax Incense to get a Wynaut, otherwise you will get a Wobbufet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- III) Abilities ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are 3 basic catagories of pokemon as far as Abilities go. 1) The pokemon will always have a set ability. This one is easy. The child will have the set ability of that pokemon. An example of this is Skitty. Skitty and Delcatty will always have Cute Charm. 2) The pokemon will have one of two abilities, and it will remain the same in all evolutionary states. The child will have the same ability as it's mother. The Seedot family is an example of this, all 3 forms will have either Chlorophyll or Early Bird, and will keep the same ability as it evolves. 3) The pokemon changes it's ability as it evolves. An example of this is Slakoth family. Slakoth will have Truant, then Vigoroth will have Vital Spirit, and finally Slaking will have Truant again. I haven't experimented with this catagory yet, but I suspect the child will always have the ability of it's evolutionary level, so a Slakoth will have Truant even if it's mother was a Vigoroth (with Vital Spirit). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IV) Attitude, Stats, and Contests ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Every pokemon has an attitude. When it's egg is produced, the pokemon has an attitude, selected at random. These attitudes affect stats. They also affect what flavors they like, in turn, how well they can build their stats for a contest. There is a direct link between which stats are affected, and how much it likes a flavor, and each flavor is linked to a contest trait. The stat with a bonus will be related to the flavor it likes, and the stat with a penalty will be related in the same way to the flavor it dislikes. Attack - Spicy - Cool Defense - Sour - Tough Sp. Att - Dry - Beauty Sp. Def - Bitter - Smart Speed - Sweet - Cute If it eats a flavor it likes, the results for the pokeblock will increase. Likewise, if it eats a flavor it dislikes, the pokeblock will be less effective than normal. If it has both/neither flavor, it will raise the pokemon's attributes normaly. Neutral attitudes (no preference in stats/flavor) Bashful Docile Hardy Quirky Serious Attack Up Lonely - Defense down Adamant - Sp. Att down Naughty - Sp. Def down Brave - Speed down Defense Up Bold - Attack down Impish - Sp. Att Down Lax - Sp. Def down Relaxed - Speed down Sp. Att Up Modest - Attack down Mild - Defense down Rash - Sp. Def down Quiet - Speed down Sp. Def Up Calm - Attack down Gentle - Defense down Careful - Sp. Att down Sassy - Speed down Speed Up Timid - Attack down Hasty - Defense down Jolly - Sp. Att down Naive - Sp. Def down So how do you get a pokemon with the attitude you want? Well, all you can do is keep breeding it until you get the attiude you like. If you are only aiming for one specific contest, you'll get the best results with any of the 4 with the bonus you want. If you want to raise all the stats, you'll want to use a neutral attitude or make sure you always mix bad with good in terms of flavor. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- V) Stats and Hidden Power ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stats are based on the stats of the parent pokemon, as well as it's attitude. Hidden Power is based on stats and varies in attack type and power based on stats. To find the stats of a specific monster, please feel free to use my stat program at http://www.isaent.com/ivcalc.htm When two pokemon breed, the resulting child will inherit the IV's of three of its six stats from its parents. Which stats and which parent these IV's come from appears to be random. For example, a child may take it's Father's Attack IV, its mother's Speed and special defense IVs. It may take all 3 from a parent, but will most likely have a mix from both. As for how much control this gives you over stats... Well, in terms of only IVs, there are over a billion possible values total, not considering nature, gender, shinyness, ect. With breeding, you limit the possibilies for the child's stats to about 3% of that. I have not yet experimented with Ditto as far as IV passing. What does this mean for breeding for a specific Hidden Power? quite a lot. There are 12 bits that affect Hidden Power: The low bit of each IV affects type, the next bit affects power. So that means you can control 6 of the 12 bits every time! That means rather than having a 3/4096-4/4096 chance of getting the exact HP you want, your odds increase to 1/64 more or less if you choose the right parents. So how do IVs affect the hidden power? Let's start with type. The low bits are used to create a binary number, with HP at the low bit, followed by attack, defense, speed, special attack, and special defense at the high bit. For those that don't know binary, start with zero, add 1 if the EV for HP is odd, 2 if the EV for Attack is odd, 4 for Defence, 8 for Speed, 16 for Special Attack, and 32 for Special Defense. Then look at the chart below with the resulting number. 0-4 Fighting 5-8 Flying 9-12 Poison 13-16 Ground 17-20 Rock 21-25 Bug 26-29 Ghost 30-33 Steel 34-37 Fire 38-41 Water 42-46 Grass 47-50 Electric 51-54 Psychic 55-58 Ice 59-62 Dragon 63 Dark If you need another approach, follow the flow chart below: If the named IV is ODD, go up the chart, go down if the IV is even. When two IVs are listed seperated by a "+", go up only if BOTH are odd, if either or both are even, go down. When two IVs are listed seperated by a "/", go up if either or both are odd, if both are even, go down. Start by dividing all your IVs by 2, and drop any fraction. So half of 31 would be 15, half of 13 would be 6. We'll call this the Halved-IV after here. (Approximate Version) Start with a base power of 30. If the Halved-IV for Special Defense is odd, add 20 to the base power. If the Halved-IV for Special Attack is odd, add another 10. Speed, 5, Defense, 2, Attack, 2, and HP, 1. (Exact Version) Start with 0. If the Halved-IV for Special Defense is odd, add 32. If the Halved-IV for Special Attack is odd, add 16. Speed, 8, Defense, 4, and HP, 1. Now, Take this number, multiply it by 40 and divide by 63. Drop any fraction and add 30. This is the base power. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VI) Moves ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All pokemon can learn moves in one of 3 ways. 1) Level moves. These are moves that a monster learns by gaining levels. 2) Machine moves. These are moves that a pokemon learns through the use of a TM or an HM. 3) Egg moves. These are moves that can only be learned through breeding. Every monster has a set of moves it will learn at birth. However, depending on its parents, it may learn more moves, and perhaps differnt ones. Here's how moves are passed from parents to their children. 1) All moves the pokemon would learn from levels 1 to 5. 2) If both parents know a move they can learn by leveling and the child can learn the move by leveling (not evolving), the child will be born knowing the move. 3) If the father knows a move that the child can learn through a TM, the child will know the move. For example, if a Torchic knows flame thrower (TM 35), whether he learned it by level or by TM, he can pass this move onto a Rhyhorn, since Rhyhorn can use TM 35. 4) If the father knows one of its child's egg moves, the child will know the move. For example, a Doduo can pass it's Drill Peck onto a Skarmory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VII) Other Breeding Tips ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Always aim to get female monsters. When you have to choose one of several monsters, save before you get the monster and make sure it's female. If you will only get one of a monster, save before you get the monster and make sure it's female. If you want a male, then take the female and breed it, at least then you have the option of breeding. When you teach a TM to a pokemon, especially a TM you can only get one of, use it on a male. From there you can pass the move on to other pokemon. Some TMs such at Hidden Power and Rest can be used by virtually all pokemon. No matter who you use those TMs on, as long as they are male and breedable, there is a way to get the technique to any other species. Want an example? Let's get Hidden Power from a Nosepass to a Bagon. One chain is Nosepass (Stone) -> Snorunt (Stone/Fairy) -> Skitty (Fairy/Field) -> Seviper (Field/Dragon) -> Bagon (Dragon). Now that's an extreme example, but you see my point. If they are, the child will be a Wynaut, otherwise, the child will be a Wobbuffet. *** These are rare monster which you can only get one of in a game *SO Only one, Saphire only *RO Only one, Ruby only ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IX) Breeder Items ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are a few items which are critical to the evolution of your monsters. Well some of these are not directly linked to breeding, most are critical for evolution. So here's the list: Fire Stone - found on Fiery Path (you need strength to get to it). You can also trade a Red Shard on route 124 to get another one. Leaf Stone - found on route 119, surf down from the weather institute, it's on the right side near the waterfall. You can also trade a Green Shard on route 124 to get one. Thunderstone - You can find it in New Mauville near the power plant. You can also trade a Yellow Shard on route 124 for one. Water Stone - This is behind one of the locked doors on the abandoned ship. You can trade a Blue Shard on route 124 for another one. Sun Stone - The man at the Mossdeep Space Center will give you one. Wild Solrocks, found at Meteor Falls, will occasionally be holding one. Solrocks can only be found in Ruby. Moon Stone - This item can be found in the north-west corner on the entrance floor of Meteor Falls. Also, Lunatones will ocasionally be carrying one. This pokemon is found in Meteor Falls, also only in Saphire. Dragon Scale - Evolves Seadra into Kingdra if it is held during a trade. This item is held by wild horsea and wild bagon. The easist method is to find horsea and use thief to take their scale if they are holding one. Deepseascale - After you give the Scanner to Capt. Stern in SLateport, he will give you the Deepseascale or the Deepseatooth. The scale will evolve Clamperl into Gorebyss Deepseatooth - After you give the Scanner to Capt. Stern in SLateport, he will give you the Deepseascale or the Deepseatooth. The tooth will evolve Clamperl into Huntail. Lax Incense - Found in Mt. Pyre, this will encourage a Wobbufet to breed a Wynaut instead of a Wobbufet. Sea Incense - Found in Mt. Pyre, let a Merill hold this so its egg will be an Azuril instead of a Merill. Heart Scale - Give this to the move tutor to make a pokemon learn a move it once knew. A wild Luvdisc may hold this. I included this because I feel the moves a pokemon has is important to breeding. You can find at least one on the ocean floor. Trade items... Blue Shard - You can find one on route 124 (you'll need surf and dive). Also wild Clamperl holds this. Also, there is at least on on the ocean floor. Green Shard - You can find this on route 126. Also, a wild Relicanth may hold this item. Also check the ocean floor. Red Shard - Found on route 124. Also, a wild Corsola may hold this. Don't forget to check the ocean floor. Yellow Shard - Found on route 124. Also, a wild Chinchou may hold this. Also, there is at least one on the ocean floor. Scanner - Found on the abandoned ship, trade for Deepseatooth or Deepseascale. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- X) Rare Monsters and Breeding ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- According to my definition, a rare monster is one in which you can only obtain one of through the process of the game. Remeber, you can only get more of a monster if you got a female, so save before you pick up any rare monsters. I will also list all of the pokemon who can serve to be the father to provide that egg move. If the father has a * by his number, that means he can only learn that move as an egg move as well, and must be bred in a chain. Here's an example of several breeding chains. To do this, the father must be able to learn all the egg moves you want the child to have, either through breeding or level. The following example is to show how to get Counter and Crush Claw onto Rhydon (both egg moves). Keep in mind that some breeding can get even more complex, and this isn't even taking TMs into consideration. Q) What do I need to breed to get a *insert name here* egg A) You need a female of that monster, or one of its evolutions. Also, you need a compatable male. Q) What monster is compatable with *pokemon* A) Any monster that has at least one egg group in common is compatable. So, a Feebas (Dragon, Water A) can breed with a Corphish (Water A, Water C) since they both are members of Water A. Q) Can I get an egg if I want a baby from my male *rare monster* A) No. Q) Where do I get *pokemon*? A) Check you pokedex, this is a breeding guide, not a location FAQ Q) How do I get a female of *pokemon*? A) Some monsters are more male than female, and vice versa. Just keep trying. The exception is Volbeat. He is male only, Illumise is the female version. Q) The man says my monsters don't like eachother, but they're in the same egg group A) They will still breed, it will just take longer. The only time there will be no egg is if he says "They seem to prefere to play with other pokemon" Q) How do I get the Sea Incense/Lax Incense A) They are in Mt. Pyre. Climb to the top of the tower, then drop down the holes. You'll find a couple of items on your way down the tower. Those items are the Sea Incense and the Lax Incense.
