I frequent the Pokemon R/S, Golden Sun Social, Dragonball, Anime & Manga, Cartoons & Animation, Metroid Prime, Super Smash Brothers Melee, and Pokemon boards, among others on GameFAQs. I'm a humanities buff, and I've extended a bit of that to the pokemon world. Now, you're probably wondering why the HELL make this guide, right? Well, you'd be surprised, the depth of the mythology behind this game series. There are an unexpected number of questions about "what the **** is this supposed to be?!" As well as false assumptions. This is to clear it all up. =================== 03. The Legal Stuff =================== While Pokemon is trademark and copyright 1995-2003 The Pokemon Company... Version History =================== v0.90 - Mar 22, 2003 - Deoxys, Regirock, Registeel, Regiice, Dragonite, Dragonair, Dratini, Salamence, Lapras, Charizard Data added. Yet more minor errors corrected... v0.85 - Mar 21, 2003 - Four more silly errors corrected, some added info on the legendary trios, Ninetales and Golduck have been added. First team has been added. v0.81 - Mar 20, 2003 - I correct a bunch of silly, stupid errors, and get a new format! v0.80 - Mar 19, 2003 - I finally got around to working on this again, now that I can actually make progress. Arcanine, Rayquaza, Kyogre, and Groudon have been added. v0.70 - Dec 23, 2002 - Yeah, yeah, I started at a random number. That's because this guide contains data relevant to legendaries up till the end of Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal, or really, 2/3 of the way through all the games released so far. Eventually, as more data pours in, I can write a pantheon on the Ruby & Sapphire critters. ===================== 05. Meet The Legends ==================== Ho-oh ----- Japanese Name: Houou Translation: Phoenix Classification: Sacred Species: Rainbow Rarity: Unique Real-World Counterpart: Chinese Phoenix (Mythological) Types: Fire/Flying Trademark Technique: Sacred Fire Game Stats: Tier 1 First Appearance [Games]: Pocket Monsters Gold & Silver [Japan] Pokemon Gold & Silver [US] Obtainable in: Pocket Monsters Gold, Silver & Crystal [Japan] Pokemon Gold, Silver & Crystal [US] Anime Strength: Unknown. First Appearance [Anime]: Episode 1 [US] Episode 1 [Japan] Special Abilities: Immortality, Ressurect others, Create Life Notes: Ho-oh is, in my estimation, tied with Lugia and Mewtwo in the show as well. Only appears to the pure of heart to bestow hope. Ho-Oo is the japanese version of the Feng-Huang, or chinese phoenix. Ho and Feng are the males, and Oo and Huang are the females. It is supposed to represent the sun, justice, fidelity and obedience. They appear only at the start of a new era, and usually to those who will start the era. Did You Know?: Ho-oh is the only pokemon to appear unnamed in the show before its corresponding game set. It is the creator of the Legendary Beasts, and is their master. It is also the only Legendary before Ruby & Sapphire to not have actually been a central figure in an episode, special, or movie. Ho-oh's last appearance was known only to Ash and Pikachu - see the notes section for more on that. Ho-oh and Lugia may be considered Dragons in the traditional asian sense; that is, simply an extremely powerful creature. The reptilian creatures associated with the term dragon is more of a western thing, although it was mostly creatures of those dimensions who were called dragons. Notes: The show and the movie conflict on data about Lugia. The movie hints at there only being one, while the show seems to relate it more to its Halcyon roots, giving it a child born on a clear day. Did You Know?: Lugia is the peacemaker of the Legendary Birds. Ho-oh and Lugia may be considered Dragons in the traditional asian sense; that is, simply an extremely powerful creature. The reptilian creatures associated with the term dragon is more of a western thing, although it was mostly creatures of those dimensions who were called dragons. Notes: Many claim Mewtwo to be the strongest pokemon, but it is unknown how powerful he is compared to Ho-oh and Lugia in the show. It is not an actually legendary or mythically based pokemon, but he is so often referred to as one, that I placed him into the guide. Did You Know?: The creator of Mewtwo is Mr. Fuji. Yep, the Pokemon House guy from Lavender Town. The game claims that Mew was induced to pregnancy and they tampered with the embryo. The result was Mewtwo. Also, Mew is said to have the DNA of all pokemon. Is he able to Time Travel? Did You Know? The game claims that Mew was induced to pregnancy and they tampered with the embryo. The result was Mewtwo. The anime claims that Mewtwo was a tampered clone from a hair of a Mew. Also, Mew is the only pokemon who did not appear in the Pokerap. Did You Know?: Ash & Company meet the young Prof. Samuel Oak in this movie. Perhaps this finally explains why Oak likes Ash more than Gary... Celebi is the only pokemon not shown in the GS Pokerap. Deoxys ------ Japanese Name: Deokishisu Translation: Deoxys Classification: Freak Species: DNA Rarity: Unique Real-World Counterpart: Really, REALLY bad Sci-fi movies. Type: Psychic Trademark Technique: Psycho Blast Game Stats: Tier 3 First Appearance [Games]: Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire Obtainable in: Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire Anime Strength: N/A First Appearance [Anime]: N/A Special Abilities: ...Shoot lasers... High intelligence, psychokinetic powers. Notes: This guy makes Mewtwo look pretty damn tame. It is not an actually legendary or mythically based pokemon, but he is so often referred to as one, that I placed him into the guide. He is the result of an alien space virus being bombarded with Cosmic Radiation and a laser from a satellite. Did You Know?: The name Deoxys is from the term Deoxyribonucleic Acid - better known as D.N.A. Dragonite --------- Japanese Name: Kairyuu Translation: Unknown to me. Notes: Dragonite uses the general body structure of the European Dragons, but it seems to be a bit more of a compromise between the European and Asian Dragon; it is primarily water based, and can be gentle or vengeful, depending on the situation. Did You Know?: Lance, leader of the Elite Four in Series 1 and the Pokemon League Champ in Series 2, consistently has Dragonites that are lower level than Dragonairs are supposed to be in order to evolve. Notes: Salamence, like Charizard, was inspired by the typical medieval dragon, but with less of a focus on fire. From its pokedex data, it would not be surprising if it was based on a rare noble dragon. Did You Know?: Salamence starts out as a Bagon, which strongly resembles a baby dinosaur, but then turns into a dragon-like egg before reaching its final stage as Salamence. The name comes from Salamander and menance; Salamanders were believed to be fire-elemental lizards. Articuno -------- Japanese Name: Freezer Translation: ...Let's think about this, hmm? Can resurrect itself like the phoenix. Eats children and appears to doomed humans in the mountains. Did You Know?: The Japanese name of the first episode Articuno appears in is "Freezer vs. Purin!" or "Articuno vs. Jigglypuff!" (!!!) Freezer is the name of a major villain in the Anime Dragonball Z. Articuno is a amalgation of the English word "Arctic," and the Spanish word "Uno," as it is the first of the bird trio. Did You Know?: I'm a little teapot, short and stout... Suicune ------- Japanese Name: Suikun Translation: King of the Waters Classification: Elemental Species: Aurora Rarity: Unique Real World Counterpart: Unknown to Me Type: Water Trademark Technique: Mirror Coat Game Stats: Tier 4 First Appearance [Games]: Pocket Monsters Gold & Silver [Japan] Pokemon Gold & Silver [US] Obtainable in: Pocket Monsters Gold, Silver & Crystal [Japan] Pokemon Gold, Silver & Crystal [US] Anime Strength: I have not watched the Episodes/Movie showcasing Suicune. Regirock -------- Japanese Name: Rejirock Translation: Rock King Classification: Elemental Species: Rock Peak Rarity: Unique Real World Counterpart: Jewish Golem (Mythological) Type: Rock Trademark Technique: Rock Throw, Curse Game Stats: Tier 4 First Appearance [Games]: Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire Obtainable in: Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire Anime Strength: N/A First Appearance [Anime]: N/A Special Abilities: Unaffected by debilitating techniques Notes: The word Golem originally meant "unformed substance." It took its present meaning in the middle ages, when stories of enchanters who could give life to creatures of inorganic materials by use of charms arose. These roughly humanoid creatures would often protect Jews or guard treasure. Did You Know?: Golems generally have a humanoid shape similar to the Legendary Golem Trio's bodies. The well-known Golem of the Geodude evolution line is not a creation, but actual living rock, which is why its name isn't fully appropriate. RegiIce -------- Japanese Name: Rejiice Translation: Ice King Classification: Elemental Species: Iceberg Rarity: Unique Real World Counterpart: Jewish Golem (Mythological) Type: Ice Trademark Technique: Icy Wind, Curse Game Stats: Tier 4 First Appearance [Games]: Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire Obtainable in: Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire Anime Strength: N/A First Appearance [Anime]: N/A Special Abilities: Unaffected by debilitating techniques Notes: The word Golem originally meant "unformed substance." It took its present meaning in the middle ages, when stories of enchanters who could give life to creatures of inorganic materials by use of charms arose. These roughly humanoid creatures would often protect Jews or guard treasure. Did You Know?: Golems may be made out of any uniform material, not simply rock. RegiSteel -------- Japanese Name: Rejisteel Translation: Steel King Classification: Elemental Species: Iceberg Rarity: Unique Real World Counterpart: Jewish Golem (Mythological) Type: Steel Trademark Technique: Metal Claw, Curse Game Stats: Tier 4 First Appearance [Games]: Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire Obtainable in: Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire Anime Strength: N/A First Appearance [Anime]: N/A Special Abilities: Unaffected by debilitating techniques Notes: The word Golem originally meant "unformed substance." It took its present meaning in the middle ages, when stories of enchanters who could give life to creatures of inorganic materials by use of charms arose. These roughly humanoid creatures would often protect Jews or guard treasure. Did You Know?: Some Golems have been associated with robots; this pokemon's association with aliens and otherworldly things is therefore, unsurprising. Arcanine -------- Japanese Name: Uindii Translation: "Windy" Classification: Legendary Species: Legendary Rarity: Rare Real-World Counterpart: Japanese Shishi (Or Jishi) (Mythological) Type: Fire Trademark Technique: Extreme Speed Evolves from: Growlithe, with use of the Fire Stone Game Stats: Above Average First Appearance [Games]: Pocket Monsters Red & Green [Japan] Pokemon Red & Blue [US] Obtainable in: Pocket Monsters Red, Yellow, Gold & Crystal [Japan] Pokemon Red, Yellow, Gold & Crystal [US] Anime Strength: Above average. First Appearance [Anime]: Episode 78 [Japan] Episode 76 [US] Special Abilities: Chases off dark spirits and demons. Notes: Arcanine is neither a dragon, lion, tiger, nor dog, but something rather close to a mix of the four. The Japanese Shishi is a mix of the Korean Koma-inu (or Korean Guardian Dog), the Chinese Kara-shishi (Or Chinese Guardian Lion) with some dragon tossed in for good mix. This is why it can learn Dragon type TMs and is given a legendary status. Did You Know?: The Arcanine is not a true Shishi, as it lacks the important horn on its head. This is probably why it is not in the same class of Legendary as even Dragonite or the trios. Arcanine has the highest stats of any pokemon below Tier 4 status. Lapras ------ Japanese Name: Rapurasu Translation: Lapras Classification: Mystical Species: Transport Rarity: Ultra-rare Real-World Counterpart: Loch Ness Monster (Mythological) Types: Water/Ice Trademark Techniques: Ice Beam, Haze, Surf Game Stats: Above Average First Appearance [Games]: Pocket Monsters Red & Green [Japan] Pokemon Red & Blue [US] Obtainable in: Series 1 & 2 Games Anime Strength: Average. First Appearance [Anime]: Episode 87 [Japan] Episode 85 [US] Special Abilities: Shrouds itself in mist. Notes: Lapras appears to have been somewhat combined with the great sea turtle, Not only does it have a characteristic shell, but it has been hunted into near extinction and lives an extremely long time. They live both in underwater lakes and open seas, so Lapras must either be capable of adapting to both fresh water and salt water, or, more likely, two different types of Lapras have gradually evolved over the years. Did You Know?: Lapras was the Surf sprite in GSC with a pallet swap. Charizard -------- Japanese Name: Lizardon Translation: Lizard King Classification: Dragon Species: Flame Rarity: Rare Real-World Counterpart: European Dragon (Mythological) Types: Fire/Flying Trademark Techniques: Slash, Flamethrower Evolves from: Charmeleon, at level 36 Game Stats: Above Average First Appearance [Games]: Pocket Monsters Red & Green [Japan] Pokemon Red & Blue [US] Obtainable in: Pocket Monsters Red, Green, Blue & Yellow [Japan] Pokemon Red, Blue & Yellow [US] Anime Strength: Greatly above average. First Appearance [Anime]: Episode 46 [Japan] Episode 44 [US] Special Abilities: None. Notes: Charizard was inspired by the typical medieval dragon, which was tempermental, red, and fire-breathing. As indicated by his Charmeleon data, Charizard is certainly quite vicious. It doesn't have a dragon- typing, which is important; it only takes normal damage from dragon attacks, and is neutral to Ice, very important in Dragon styled teams. Did You Know?: Charizard was only the second pokemon that evolved to its final form while it was in Ash Ketchum's possession on the TV Show. Ninetales --------- Japanese Name: Kyuukon Translation: Nine Tails Classification: Paranormal Species: Fox Rarity: Rare Real-World Counterpart: Japanese Kitsune (Mythological) Type: Fire Trademark Technique: Fire Spin Evolves from: Vulpix, with use of the Fire Stone Game Stats: Average First Appearance [Games]: Pocket Monsters Red & Green [Japan] Pokemon Red & Blue [US] Obtainable in: Pocket Monsters Green, Yellow, Gold & Crystal [Japan] Pokemon Blue, Yellow, Gold & Crystal [US] Anime Strength: Greatly above average. First Appearance [Anime]: Episode 63 [Japan] Episode 61 [US] Special Abilities: Change shape, seduce, long-life, cast curses, possession of bodies, cast illusions, enter dreams, hypnotize. Notes: The Kitsune is a very vengeful creature with a strong sense of justice. Its ability to shape-shift is used to either reward or punish someone, generally. They prefer to shape-shift into the forms of beautiful women. Kitsune are foxes who have lived 1,000 years or more; upon hitting the grand old age, their fur turns Silver, White, or Gold. Did You Know?: The Shishi (Arcanine) is a natural enemy of the Nine-tailed fox. Those who feared the wrath of Kitsunes could afford no better protection than a dog or Shishi. (Not that this was very good protection if the fox could trick the dog's owner into killing it....) Ninetales is fire-element due to the fact that a "Foxfire" is said to appear whenever one of its illusions is dispelled. Golduck ------- Japanese Name: Gorudaku Translation: Golduck Classification: Paranormal Species: Duck Rarity: Uncommon Real-World Counterpart: Japanese Kappa (Mythological) Type: Water Trademark Technique: Confusion Evolves from: Psyduck, at Level 33. Game Stats: Average First Appearance [Games]: Pocket Monsters Red & Green [Japan] Pokemon Red & Blue [US] Obtainable in: Series 1, 2, and 3 Games Anime Strength: Greatly above average. First Appearance [Anime]: Episode 70 [Japan] Episode 68 [US] Special Abilities: Life Drain, great strength Notes: The Kappa is a river-creature that has the ability to either suck a victim's blood out through their anus, or psychically drain an opponent of its lifeforce, which is likely the origin of Golduck's psychic powers. They are very vicious and powerful, but not always evil. However, they cannot last long outside of water for fear of losing the water they store in an indentation in their head. Did You Know?: Golduck, like many other mythologically inspired pokemon, does not exactly correspond to the myth it is based upon. Obviously, Golduck has no cranial indentation, but it is not at its best outside of water regardless. Unown ----- Japanese Name: Annon Translation: "Unknown," literally. Classification: Paranormal Rarity: Uncommon Real World Counterpart: Celtic Runes (Mythological) Type: Psychic Trademark Technique: Hidden Power Game Stats: Poor First Appearance [Games]: Pocket Monsters Gold & Silver [Japan] Pokemon Gold & Silver [US] Obtainable in: Pocket Monsters Gold, Silver & Crystal [Japan] Pokemon Gold, Silver & Crystal [US] Anime Strength: Weak alone; phenomenal in clusters. First Appearance [Anime]: Legend of the Crystal Tower [Japan Movie] Legend of the Unown Tower [US Movie] Special Abilities: Physically manifest desires. Notes: None Did You Know?: Ruby & Sapphire add a ! and a ? Unown, but you still can't GET Unown in those versions without a Gameshark/Codebreaker. ====================================== 06. Item: Leftovers Moveset 1: Baton Pass Calm Mind Double Team Psychic Alternate Moveset: Baton Pass Calm Mind Sunny Day Psychic Notes: A possible party opener, surprisingly; I normally lead with a FIRE-type pokémon. While Espeon was useless as a Baton Passer before, I think he works well now. Calm Mind and Double Team make for a good combination, and can virtually remove the threat of most WATER-type pokémon. I'd Baton-pass to Ho-oh if you have Sunny Day. Ho-oh ----- Pressure trait. Cheeky, Cowardly, Gentle, or Humble personality. Item: Leppa Berry Moveset 1: Recover Solarbeam Thunderbolt Sacred Fire Alternate Moveset: Recover Giga Drain Thunderbolt Sacred Fire Notes: Ahh, a variation on the standard Ho-oh. He should immediately follow the Espeon, as he is the team's strongest point. If you don't have Sunny Day Espeon, I'd highly suggest using Giga Drain instead. Groudon ------- Drought trait. Obstinate, Naughty, Cheerful, or Cautious personality. Item: Mint Berry Moveset: Earthquake Rest Build Up Brick Break Notes: AstralGroudon. ^_^ I opt for Brick Break because it still gives him a super effective on Ice, adds a super effective to Dark, and will help break down a psuedo passer. Flying pokemon are not much of a threat, generally, and Brick Break has normal effectiveness on most flying types anyway. Blaziken -------- Raging Fire trait. Tenacious, Obedient, Earnest, Shy, or Fickle personality. Item: Bright Powder Moveset: Sky Upper Rock Slide Aerial Ace Build Up Notes: Aerial Ace is there more for its ability to never miss than anything else. It may come in handy, or maybe not. Because only three types resist flying, and Blaziken has a Super-Effective on all of those, it's a better choice than swift, which won't hit a ghost - and since Ghosts like to use Double Team, that wouldn't help much. Rock Slide will just hurt, frankly. Other Notes: I like to call this the Aerial'Ken.... Moltres ------- Pressure trait. Humble personality. Item: Charcoal or Leppa Berry Moveset: Fire Blast Sunny Day Safeguard Whirlwind Notes: Variation on the Standard GSC 'Tres. He Pseudo-passes and pseudo-hazes, so try to keep him alive. Solrock ------- Floating trait. Obstinate personality. Item: Focus Band or Scope Lens Moveset: Cosmic Power Explosion Rock Slide Double Team Notes: The V Solrock. It's a hazer-killer; draw out the opponent, and BAM! If the opponent happens to decide to wait, then use your attack. If you Baton Pass from an Espeon to this, I feel sorry for your opponent. ============================== 09. Frequently Asked Questions ============================== Q. Why do you list Red & Green as the first appearance for Japanese? A. Red & Green were the original versions. Blue came out later, Yellow came even later. Q. Ok then, so why did the US get Red & Blue? A. We didn't. We got Red & Green. Green got Blue's Super Gameboy Border and Red & Green BOTH got Blue's picture library. You don't want to see the original library. Believe me. They all look like roadkill. Q. You suddenly stopped calling them "Pocket Monsters," when you got to Ruby and Sapphire! Why? A. Because the official name in Japan became "Pokemon," shortly after the release of Crystal Version. Q. What does ______ mean? A. Look in the Glossary. If it's not there, THEN ask me about it. Q. Can you rate my team? A. So far, yes, but only if they're a mythically-based team, in part or in whole. To be mythically based, in my book, you have to have at least one pokemon made from old myths on your team, and your team has to have a theme that was often present in old religions, such as sun worship, cat worship, use of music... Q. You forgot _____ pokemon from Ruby/Sapphire!! Why?! A. This guide is stated to be incomplete. Don't be a ninny like some and ask me why I left out Jirachi, Deoxys, Latios, Latias, the Regi-trio, or anything else exclusively from Ruby/Sapphire until I hit version 1.00. Feel free to point out mythical pokemon in the previous versions, however. Q. My friend told me ______ was a cheap pokemon! He is right? A. If your friend is talking about in a Series 1 game or Kyogre, he's right. Otherwise, your friend is a senseless ninny, particularly if it's a Tier 3 or below pokemon. Dragonite, Tyranitar, Metagross, Salamence, and Slaking all are breedable pokemon which may be obtained more than once, are very popular, and have equal or better stats than most legendaries. Tier 1 pokemon tend to be the subject of most debate, but their best uses are as sweepers, and some of them don't have the best type matching, making them fairly equal over all. Q. Why is Kyogre cheap?! A. Because it can OHKO more than 70% of all final form pokemon on the opening blow with its attack Spout, which is NOT inaccurate, and lacks a Flying type to make it an easy kill for electric pokemon. ============ 10. How You Can Help ==================== I need a lot more data, especially on the Legendary Beasts, Non-Legendaries with Mythical Backgrounds, and the Legendaries of Series 3 (Ruby/Sapphire!) More mythical teams would be great, as I'm trying to encourage the use of legendary pokemon in original ways; God knows originality is often missed in the meta-game, and bypassed for "easy win." E-Mail me, AIM me, or post information at http://cgi.gamefaqs.com/boards/gentopic.asp?board=32745 You WILL be credited! ========================= 12.
