The in-game graphics are simplistic and colourful, while the cutscenes are plenty and lush. Very impressive full vocal intro song "Progress! Driller!" sung by voice actor Horie Mitsuko. The most unique feature of this incarnation of the game is the Wonderful Pacteria Mode. Here there is no timer counting the air down, but the air runs out as you destroy blocks. This makes for a slower paced, more puzzle than action, style of playing. There are a few menus and items in Japanese but it's very possible to play and finish the game without knowing any Japanese, although maybe you won't finish it 100%. The Mission Driller and Grand Prix race modes contain very little text, while the exploring Pacteria mode contains text descriptions on the items, although these are also distinguished by colour. ======================================================================== | Gameplay | ============ - Drill Drill Drill The main game-play is drilling puzzle. The general idea is to drill your way through colourful blocks down to the bottom. As you drill, the blocks above you become dislodged and fall down, watch out, or you will be crushed and lose a life. Blocks falling down onto blocks of the same colour forming a cluster of four or more will disappear. Gather air capsules to not run out of air. When you only have 30% air left your character's face will turn blue and an air icon will appear next to him. When there's 5% left an alarm will start to sound and the icon is replaced by a countdown. - Save up miles and get items Save up Driller Miles by digging, the more you dig the more miles you get. Whenever you dig 1m you get one unit that you can use to buy items in the shops. Miles are collected and saved in all playing modes. Dig a lot and save up heaps of miles to buy great items. You can check the number of miles you got in Records and buy things at the Mission Driller shop. - Raise a mysterious Pacteria creature In the Wonderful Pacteria Mode you breed a lovely and wonderful creature called Pacteria. It changes colour and appearance depending on what you feed it. While it grows up you collect Pakute Breeding Cards which has info and pictures of the more than 100 different kinds of Pacteria. While conquering the ruins of Doridorado you will get items to make the Pacteria evolve. ======================================================================== | Story | ========= Where did the debris of the blocks that Mr Driller and others have broken really disappear to? So far it has been a great mystery. However, Dr. Z and his group recently discovered creatures called Pacteria who's favourite food are blocks. Their bodies are only 3cm around and their camouflage colouring has kept them hidden from the eyes of people as they ate the blocks. The ecology of the Pacteria are still shrouded in mystery. The ruins of Doridorado suddenly appeared from the depths of the earth. The ruins are filled with blocks, but it seems the key to solve the mystery of the Pacteria is hidden inside. For exploring these ruins Susumu got a new medieval fighter suit. Susumu takes on this challenge under the name Knight Susumu Hori, wearing his armour Dorikyariba and his sword is Doriama. - Opening Videos These are so cool that I had to give them a special mention. The first one is the full vocal song. This features a presentation of all the game characters. If you leave the start screen on after that one you will get another video that tells the story of Susumu and his friends, the Pacteria and the Doridorado ruins. ======================================================================== | Playing Modes | ================= - Wonderful Pacteria Search your way down the mysterious ruins of Doridorado. Collect items to make your Pacteria creature grow. Collect Pacteria cards as it grows. The major new thing in this mode is that there is no timer, instead you lose air every time you slash at a block. So you have unlimited time to get to the bottom, but once you run out of air, that's it, you only get one life. The drill has been replaced by the sword Doriama. Every time you slash a block you lose 1% of air, even on the brown x-blocks, and even if you only slash them once without breaking them. You need to 5 slashes to break them completely so you'll lose 5% air. When you get crushed you lose 20% air, but you don't die. Grab Doristones on the way down, green ones hold extra air, yellow various power-ups, red can destroy huge amounts of blocks at once, and blue can change the colour of the blocks. Drop into the shops to buy items for the Pacteria, or take the Home Way airline for a shortcut home. Coloured, brown and beige blocks appear along with Doristones and treasure chests with Pacteria items. - Mission Driller Classic Mr Driller mode. Save countries from the dastardly blocks. From Japan to France, the jungles of the Amazon and even the entire Universe in the endless space mode, Mr Driller and friends has to go everywhere with their trusty drillers. You get three lives and every time you run out of air or get crushed you lose one of them. Collect a lot of air capsules and earn extra lives. Each capsules gives you 100 points more, so the first capsule is 100 points, 2nd 200, 3rd 300, etc. Free the sleeping blue people creatures in the blocks for extra points. In this mode coloured, brown and beige blocks appear. - Driller Grand Prix Compete against the other driller characters in this race mode. Speed is everything. If you get crushed or die by running out of air, all you lose is the time it takes to get resurrected. Your air will be reset to 100% every time. All kinds of blocks appear in this mode, often in maze-like or peculiar patterns. ======================================================================== | Items | ========= - Blocks Coloured, yellow, green, red, blue - These are the main blocks you drill your way through. If four blocks get together they disappear. X-marked five blocks - Can be drilled through with five hacks, and usually a loss of air. Sticks together and disappears the same way as normal coloured blocks. White blocks - These you can drill through but they don't stick together. They appear both as single blocks and bigger blocks the size of four blocks. Crystal blocks - Dissipates slowly as they come into view creating major instability Metal blocks - Indestructible, often immobile and in big clusters. - Air Capsules Each capsule holds 20% of air. You also get bonus points for them. ======================================================================== | Wonderful Pacteria Mode Guide | ================================= ===== Intro The first time you try to enter the Pacteria Room you will see an intro video. This video will not be saved in the Record section, so this is the only time you see it. Dr Z tells Susumu about the Pacteria and gives him the Dorikyariba medieval suit and the Doriama sword. You will then be passed into the Pacteria Room where an egg awaits. Just wait for the egg to hatch and you have your very own Pakubaby. The first (and only) item you have is an Wind Myu Stone. Feed this to the Pakubaby and it will transform into a Pacteria. After this you will see another short video and then you need to explore the ruins for a bit to gather more items before you can make the Pacteria evolve further. See the Pacteria Breeding section for info on how to breed your Pacteria successfully. The first time you start a new stage you get a to see a little cutscene video. At the end of every stage you get to see a similar video, and this one is saved in the Records section. - General Strategy Don't hurry, take your time and plan ahead. Always try to slash long vertical blocks if possible. On levels with few colours or big block you should wait for the blocks to settle down before starting to slash again. Often they will collide and destroy themselves so you don't have to waste air slashing them. On the more mixed levels with many different colours and blocks you are often better off playing a more classic style, slashing blocks and running before they fall on you. In these areas if you let the blocks settle you will often find yourself caught above brown blocks. - Houses Most of the time a blue Chiteijin appears. I think he's telling you some useful hints. Other times a fighter appears with this menu: Choice? 1. Fight 2. Escape Depending on what you are fighting you can win or lose air, make sure you have enough to survive if you lose. Pooka [red ball] Air 5% Fygar [green dragon] Air 10% Meiji Pooka [blue ball] Air 20% King Fygar [red dragon] Air 20% - Home Way Airlines Total miles on top right Price for travel is mentioned in the text with yes/no Don't have enough miles, can't travel Left - Yes, Right No You only get to keep a few of your items if you escape this way, sometimes as many as 5 but usually 1 or 2. - Shops I recommend you not sell your doristones or other items, it's much easier to earn more miles by playing instead. I usually buy all the items they have. If you played a bit to rack up the miles they're cheap enough, and should your inventory become full they're easy to toss out later. The Sell Menu, on the right in the Shops is always the same, as follows: ドリストーン Doristone 25 Miles/each 地底トマト Earth Tomato 50 Miles/each 地底ナス Earth Eggplant 50 Miles/each 地底ピーマン Earth Pimento 50 Miles/each 地底レモン Earth Lemon 50 Miles/each 元気の素 Extra Energy 50 Miles/each - Doristones These are the shiny little crystals that appear among the blocks, and sometimes when you destroy a block. Each colour got a specific usage. Use the Doristone screen to keep track of your stones and power-ups. It's the first option on the pause menu. You will see a list of your stones to the left, and the status of power-ups to the right. Each yellow power-up has a particular number of uses before it runs out. If you have several of the same power-up you can always up the count by activating more stones. - Green Doristones Very easy to see what these are. They are each marked with a certain % of air they hold. Save this air until you really need it, usually in the later levels. Make sure you always have at least 20% air though so you can survive even if you get crushed. エア1% Air 1% - 1 Extra Air Unit エア5% Air 5% - 5 Extra Air Units エア10% Air 10% - 10 Extra Air Units エア20% Air 20% - 20 Extra Air Units - Yellow Doristones These are all very useful power-ups. Although their names are all Japanese, they are all good so no need to worry about going wrong if you don't know which yellow stone is which. Barrier is by far the most useful as it allows you to survive being crushed, the others all increase your abilities a bit, for a limited number of uses. バリア Barrier - Protective bubble, get crushed without losing air (1 use) スピード Speed - Increase speed of slashing and falling (50 uses) ジャンプ Jump - Jump two blocks up (30 uses) ミニドリ Mini Dori - Susumu turns tiny (30 uses) スリー ウェイ Three Way - Slash blocks at the sides as well as down (20 uses) ストーンサーチ Stone Search - Allows you to see where the Doristones are hidden (50 uses) スーパ バリア Super Barrier - Protective bubble, get crushed without losing air uses up 20 air units when activated (3 uses) マックスアップ Max Up - Increases max level of air by 10% (40 uses) - Red Doristones Destroyers, eradicates all 12 blocks up and down. Very useful if you get stuck in a messy area, or need to get to a crowded air capsule. It's a good idea to save these until you really need them, but don't be too skimpy, the red stones tend to be plentiful. V Destroy V - Vertical line you're on disappears デストロイH Destroy H - Horizontal line you're on disappears デストロイA Destroy A - All blocks disappear, uses up 10% air デストロイ1 Destroy 1 - 1 Blocks out on all sides around you disappears デストロイ2 Destroy 2 - 2 Blocks out on all sides around you disappears デストロイ3 Destroy 3 - 3 Blocks out on all sides around you disappears - Blue Doristones Changes the colour of blocks, similar to the pink stones they work 12 blocks up and down. Very useful on the two coloured areas, just turn all blocks to one colour and eradicate them all with one blow! Another good trick is to turn blocks into one colour before using pink to destroy that colour. The blue warp stone is a bit special, and even if you don't know Japanese you can spot it because it doesn't have a roman letter in its name. Only use this in absolutely desperate and hopeless circumstances as it will put you right back at the start of the stage. Unlike Home Way though you get to keep all your items, and your air is filled right back up. チェンジB Change B - Random colour turns Blue チェンジG Change G - Random colour turns Green チェンジR Change R - Random colour turns Red チェンジY Change Y - Random colour turns Yellow チェンジC Change C - Random colour turns to Crystal Blocks チェンジF Change F - Random colour turns to Five Blocks ワープ Warp - Warps you back to the start of the stage with 100% air - Myu Stones and Earth Items These don't affect the playing of the puzzle directly, but make sure to gather them up to feed to the Pacteria later. A chest appears at the start of each 100m with either an Earth Item or a Myu Stone. Wait for this chest to fall and grab the item before you start digging your way down. Earth Items and Myu Stones can also be bought in the shops sometimes. The Item list is the second on the pause menu. When your inventory gets full you will be asked if you want to throw away some item to make place for the next. Top: Yes, Bottom, No Choose item to throw. Try to keep the Myu Stones as they are most important for evolving the Pacteria. These are always on the bottom of the list. See more details on Pacteria breeding after the walkthrough. - Myu Stones 風のミューストーン Wind Myu Stone [light blue wavy] 火のミューストーン Fire Myu Stone [red wavy] 水のミューストーン Water Myu Stone [dark blue wavy] 大地のミューストーン Earth Myu Stone [green wavy] 力のミューストーン Power Myu Stone [red star] 闇のミューストーン Dark Myu Stone [black star] 光のミューストーン Light Myu Stone [yellow star] - Earth Items 地底トマト Earth Tomato - Turns Pacteria Red 地底レモン Earth Lemon - Turns Pacteria Yellow 地底ナス Earth Eggplant - Turns Pacteria Blue 地底ピーマン Earth Pimento - Turns Pacteria Green 元気の素 Extra Energy - Makes Pacteria Happy ================= Stage Walkthrough Once you finish Ice Cave of Valkyrie the game will be cleared. The final endless "A Big Pacteria Shrine" stage will open up, and all the other stages you cleared previously will be accessible. Bonus items change after you clear the game, for example: "Earth item - 80% Earth item/20% Wind Myu Stone" should be read as: Before clearing you will get an Earth Item. After clearing you have an 80% chance of getting an Earth Item and a 20% chance of getting a Wind Myu Stone. - Navel of Sandra Depth 300m Clear Bonus 200 Miles 56m House 100m Earth Item 126m House 156m Shop 181m Home Way 200m Earth item - 80% Earth item/20% Wind Myu Stone 231m House 271m House 300m Wind Myu Stone Shop 156m レッドドリストーン Red Doristone 50 Miles 元気の素 Extra Energy 100 Miles 地底ピーマン Earth Pimento 100 Miles 地底レモン Earth Lemon 100 Miles After clearing: 10% Wind Myu Stone 500 Miles - Den of Quox Depth 500m Clear Bonus 400 Miles 51m House 100m Earth Item 131m House 176m Shop 200m Earth Item 251m House 300m Earth Item - 80% Earth item/20% Wind Myu Stone 35 Wind Myu Stone -> Hanepaku2 (wind lvl 2) Hanepaku2 (wind lvl 2) -> Wind Myu Stone -> Pakudakku (wind lvl 3) etc. So if you continue to give it Wind Myu Stones it will evolve according to the chart: Hanepaku > Hanepaku2 > Pakudakku > Hanepaku3 > Mimipaku > Watapaku > Pakususumu If you feed it a stone of a different element it will change to that element, without rising a level. Examples: Hanepaku (wind lvl 1) -> Fire Myu Stone -> Tsunopaku (fire lvl 1) Mohipaku (fire lvl 3) -> Water Myu Stone -> Takopaku (water lvl 3) and so on. Level 7 is different. First of all it's the same form for all elements, Pakususumu. If you give Pakususumu an ordinary Myu Stone it will revert back to level 5. Example: Pakususumu -> Wind Myu Stone -> Mimipaku (wind lvl 5) But if you give it a Light Myu Stone it will transform into Chiteipaku, level S. Pakususumu -> Light Myu Stone -> Chiteipaku (level S) Level S and SS are special levels. When you use a Light Myu Stone on a level 6 Pacteria it will jump to level S. Example: Watapaku (wind lvl 6) -> Light Myu Stone -> Chiteipaku (lvl S) Moepaku (fire lvl 6) -> Light Myu Stone -> Girupaku (lvl S) and so on. If you give level S a Light Myu Stone they go up one number. Example: Chiteipaku (lvl S No151) -> Light Myu Stone -> Mapipaku (lvl S No152) Dorapaku (lvl S No154) -> Light Myu Stone -> Pakyura (lvl S No154) and so on. If you continue to give Light Myu Stones to level S it will reach level SS: Kozupaku (lvl S No156 -> Light Myu Stone -> Pagekiyo (lvl SS No157) Pagekiyo (lvl SS No157) -> Light Myu Stone -> Hepaku (lvl SS No158) etc Full transformation chart for levels S and SS: Pakususumu (lvl 7 150) -> Chiteipakupaku (lvl S 151) -> Mapipaku (lvl S 152) -> Girupaku (lvl S 153) -> Dorapaku (lvl S 154) -> Pakyura (lvl S 155) -> Kozupaku (lvl S 156) -> Pagekiyo (lvl SS 157) -> Hepaku (lvl SS 158) -> Kaze No Pakunoa (lvl SS 159) -> Dompaku (lvl SS 160) -> Katsupaku (lvl SS 161) However, if you go the long route above the Pacteria might leave before you reach the final number 161. The shortest possible route below should give you a chance to reach the end form: Pacteria (lvl 0) -> Earth -> Hakopaku (lvl 1) -> Light -> Wampaku (lvl 4) -> Light -> Pakusuta (lvl 6) -> Light -> Kozupaku (lvl S No156) -> Light -> Pagekiyo (lvl SS No157) -> Light -> Hepaku (lvl SS No158) -> Light -> Kaze No Pakunoa (lvl SS No159) -> Light -> Dompaku (lvl SS No160) -> Light -> Katsupaku (lvl SS No161) You need 8 Light Myu Stones and 1 Earth Myu Stone to complete these transformations. Choose a character that suits your skill level. If you drill skilfully enough (be very fast, get a lot of air capsules, don't die once) you can earn awards. These will be marked by a "MR." in the high score list. Gather up a lot of miles to buy new drills and extra lives in the shop. If you get stuck or slowed down, look at the other players and follow their lead. They usually take a few different but clever paths down among the blocks. But don't look at them too much, you can usually find an even better path yourself. Remember that it takes longer time to drill away a block than to run or fall, so try to take out long vertical blocks and fall down the space where they were. It is highly recommended that you use one of the fast characters for this mode, either Taizou Hori or Ataru Hori. You see the other characters on the screen as semi-transparent figures. Note that what you do with the blocks don't affect their playing field and vice versa. Each player plays on their own field. Try not to rush too much, when the race starts the other characters will seem to get a massive head start but you will catch up rather easily further along. Look ahead and try to take a strategic path. If you played the same stage a few times try to remember what's ahead and which direction to go. Try to not jump up for air capsules, it takes too much time, just grab the air capsules that come in your path. In some situations it's actually faster to die of asphyxiation than to run a long way for more air. You can win the Driller Award, the Pickaxe Award and the Shovel Award if you're a master digger. You have to win each race before the next one opens.
