After reading this, a player should have fundemental understanding on how Blitz works and how to use it with little or no problem at all. A secondary goal of this guide was to originally put an end to (or at least lower the amount of) "HELP! I can't use Blitz!" type posts at the "Final Fantasy III" message board at GameFAQs. People SERIOUSLY NEEDED HELP and they had a hard time finding it. This goal has now re-arisen as people request help on the "Final Fantasy VI Advance" boards and this guide is the key to salvation. Oh, one last thing I'd like to say is a clairification if people need it: Final Fantasy 6(j) - Final Fantasy 6 released in Japan on the Super Famicom Final Fantasy 3(us) - Final Fantasy 6 released in North America on the SNES Final Fantasy 6(GBA) - Final Fantasy 6 on the Gameboy Advance ############################################################################### - Blitz Background ------------------------------------------------------------ ############################################################################### Around the time of this game's production, fighting games like "Street Fighter II" were all the rage with various directional commands that pulled off cool special moves and such. Squaresoft incorporated this aspect into a skill dubbed "Blitz", where key combinations can unleash powerful attacks that can deal some nice amounts of damage to enemies. Eventually, this skill was given to the musclebound character known in English as Sabin and in Japanese as Mash, twin brother to Edgar, the king of Figaro. ############################################################################### - Blitz Mechanics ------------------------------------------------------------- ############################################################################### 2a - In general... 2b - Common Mistakes. 2c - Button Accuracy 2d - Timing 2e - Increasing power 2f - Targetting the Blitz 2g - The Back Row 2h - Checking what Blitzes you have ------------------------------------------------------------------- In general... ------------------------------------------------------------------- Let me start off by saying my basic reply to all that try to rush the combinations, thinking that using Blitz is just like doing a special move in any kind of fighting game... On both Emulator *coughillegalcough* or Game System, Blitz depends on accuracy of the key combinations. You don't have to punch buttons at the speed of Street Fighter to get the stuff right. Just take your time. Now I can get on with the details. Blitz works in a very simple fashion. 1. Wait for Sabin's turn. 2. Move the pointer in his command menu down to "Blitz". 3. Press the A button. 4. After that, the pointer will then move to point at Sabin. 5. Enter the button/direction combination of the Blitz you want to use. 6. Finish off the command entry by pressing the A button once again. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Common Mistakes ------------------------------------------------------------------- Even with the simple to follow steps above, beginning players often make simple mistakes. These are two of the more common ones: The first of these has to do with waiting for a sign to start. Normally players expect some big signification to enter the button combination for the Blitz. Since there is nothing except for the hand pointing at Sabin, beginners can end up pressing the A button a second time, skipping step 5 of the list just above. To add to this comfusion, there is a yellow "flash" that appears around Sabin before the attack whether the entry is correct or not. Seeing this flash, the beginning player thinks that it is the time to enter the command, not knowing that he or she just skipped the entry step. The second of these relates to confusion with a standard in standard fighting games. If a character is facing the opposite direction in standard fighting games, the combination changes to fit, left and right values swapping. In cases where Sabin is facing the opposite direction (Back, Pincer, and Side attacks), players that are experienced in fighting games may get the impulse to swap left and right directions. In reality however, the game does not change directions when Sabin is turned around. For example, the Blitz known as "Pummel/Raging Fist" is "Left, Right, Left, Press A to enter command" when Sabin is facing left and it is still "Left, Right, Left, Press A to enter command" if Sabin is facing right. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Button Accuracy ------------------------------------------------------------------- The first thing to take note of is the topic of button accuracy. You know, the aspect that goes to hell as a player tries to do stuff faster and faster? Ideally, all a player has to do is watch what he or she is doing with a bit more care, just to get it correct. It doesn't matter if you can do 100 combinations per second if none of them are done right. Luckily, there is an aspect that makes things a bit easier... There are no simultaneous button combinations at all in any Blitz. That includes the pressing of A to end the combo. For example, the first blitz that Sabin uses, "Pummel/Raging Fist" is "Left, Right, Left, Press A to enter command" not "Left, Right, Left and A at the same time to enter command" The second combination may work, but if the A button is detected just a fraction of a second before the second Left, you'll get an "Incorrect Blitz input" message a instead of "Pummel/Raging Fist". ------------------------------------------------------------------- Timing ------------------------------------------------------------------- Now to get into the intricate details of timing the key combinations just like any standard fighting game. In a majority of fighting games, the whole button combination for a special move must be done within a second or two in order for it to work. The timing for Blitz, however, is much more lenient than any fighting game and it is as follows: - When you initially press A to select Blitz and the hand points at Sabin, there is no timer yet. You can come back in an hour (as long as Sabin is still alive by the time you get back if you have Active Time set instead of Wait Time) and still be able to do the Blitz. - As soon as you begin pressing button/directions, a timer starts. After each button/direction entered, there is a one second time limit to press the next button/direction. If the timer runs out, the result of the Blitz will be an "Incorrect Blitz Input" no matter what. - Once the last button/direction is entered, there is also a one second time limit to pressing A to finalize the Blitz input. If the timer runs out here, the result of the Blitz will also be an "Incorrect Blitz Input" no matter what. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Increasing power ------------------------------------------------------------------- Finally, there is the job of increasing the strength of Blitz attacks. Since it depends on the type (magic/physical) of the attack, I'll deal with each type seperately. To raise the strength of physical damage Blitzes, just raise the Vigor/Strength and stat as high as you can for best results. For magic based Blitzes, you have to raise Magic Power as high as you can for best results. Sabin's level also plays an important role in the damage calculations for both types, so it would be advised to raise that too. Rasing Vigor/Strength and Magic Power is best done once you have Espers available. An equipped Esper provides additional boosts to the stats you get when you level a character up. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Targetting the Blitz ------------------------------------------------------------------- Random Person: "No! The target pointer points at Sabin! TARGET THE ENEMIES!" This is why you should never assume things. When the hand points at Sabin, it basically means "This guy here is going to do a Blitz." Now enter the combination of the Blitz you want to use. Unless you're running some special patch on a ROM, Blitz will have automatic targetting that will come into effect after the combination has been correctly entered. No manual targetting is ever needed. ------------------------------------------------------------------- The Back Row ------------------------------------------------------------------- As you will see in detail later on, Blitzes can be based off of Physical Attack and Magical Attack properties. Because of the relation to Physical Attack of some Blitzes, the question comes up: "Does the damage from a Blitz get cut in half if Sabin is in the Back Row?" The answer is no. The half damage cut from being in the back row does not affect the Blitz command. Therefore, if you felt like it, you can go ahead and put Sabin in the back row and use his Blitzes instead of the Fight/Attack command. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Checking what Blitzes you have ------------------------------------------------------------------- Go to the Skills/Abilities Menu fur Sabin. In both the SNES and GBA versions of the game, there is a fairly similar menu on the side that starts with a pointer on "Magic". You can move the pointer to point at any of the button commands to see a short description in the "Blitz Description" part of the display. ############################################################################### - Basic "How To" (Controller) ------------------------------------------------- ############################################################################### If you're good at fighting games, this should be easy. But for the less experienced, Blitz may cause some problems. As mentioned in the mechanics section, all you have to do is take your time. Just memorize a Blitz combination that you are comfortable with, practise it, and make use of it. Circular motion, on the other hand, may be the biggest bother of all. For example, it is quite difficult to just go "Down -PAUSE- Down-Left -PAUSE- Left". In this case, the fighting game method must be used. To do "Down, Down-Left, Left", start by pressing the first non-diagonal direction on the game pad and then slide your thumb or finger to the second non-diagonal direction. Sliding from Down to Left will create the "Down, Down-Left, Left" combination of the example, the thumb or finger entering the direction Down-Left as it slides from Down to Left. The slide can be continued to the next adjacent direction and the next, completing half and full circles. With more practise, more complicated commands like that of Bum Rush can be achieved with this ability. Just incase you didn't get it the first time, here it is once again in a more simplified manner. Circular Motion, Quarter Circle 1. Press the first non-diagonal direction on the game pad. 2. Slide your thumb or finger to the second non-diagonal direction. 3. If the circular motion needs to be continued, just slide to the next non-diagonal and so on. Note: There is also an easier way to do all Blitzes that require circular motion without using the method above (but you can at least make use of what you learned in the circular motion tutorial in other games... so you don't get nothing out of reading it). The alternate commanmd method still works in the GBA version. Listed in section 5. ############################################################################### - Basic "How To" (Keyboard) --------------------------------------------------- ############################################################################### Just like with the controller, it is possible to take your time for general Blitz commands. But circular motion becomes a problem once again. For Emulators *coughillegalcough* (or if you somehow managed to connect a keyboard to your SNES or GBA), the situation is much different. There is no pad to slide a finger across, only arrow keys. In this case, a different approach must be taken. To do a "quarter circle" the player has to press the first non-diagonal direction to start. Then the player must press the second non-diagonal direction while holding the first non-diagonal direction to enter the diagonal. Finally, the player has to release of the first non-diagonal direction to enter the second non-diagonal direction. This method can also be continued on and on, direction to direction, allowing half and full circles. This will effectively do a "First Direction, Diagonal, Second Direction, Diagonal... And so on." in any situation. Just incase you didn't get it the first time, here it is once again in a more simplified manner. Circular Motion, Quarter Circle 1. Press the first non-diagonal direction on the game pad. 2. Press the second non-diagonal direction while holding the first non-diagonal direction. 3. Release the first non-diagonal direction. 4. If the circular motion needs to be continued, just press a third non-diagonal direction while holding the second to begin a second quarter circle. Note: There is also an easier way to do all Blitzes that require circular motion without using the method above (but you can at least make use of what you learned in the circular motion tutorial in other games... so you don't get nothing out of reading it). The alternate commanmd method still works in the GBA version. Listed in section 5. ############################################################################### - Component Diagonals --------------------------------------------------------- ############################################################################### Some people, no matter how hard they try can't get circular motion on a directional pad working, even if their life depended on it. Well, luckily for these people, the programmers at Square are lazy. In reality, when a player presses a diagonal direction, the game will only register one component of it and just count it as a diagonal. For example, Down-Left is registered as Down or Left and counted as if it was really Down-Left. Because of this, a player can just press one part of a diagonal direction and still have it counted as a diagonal. For example, let's look at the command for Aura Bolt/Aura Cannon. The command is listed as "Down, Down-Left, Left". However instead of pressing Down-Left, Down or Left can be pressed. This creates two alternate commands for Aura Bold/Aura Cannon: "Down, Left, Left" and "Down, Down, Left". The Blitz Breakdown section contains one variation of each Blitz with the Component Diagonal method. Many people prefer to make use of these over actually trying to do circular motion on a directional pad and often encourage others to use it as well. Personally, I believe that as long as a method works it's good. ############################################################################### - How to get Sabin's Blitzes -------------------------------------------------- ############################################################################### Except for "Bum Rush/Phantom Rush", all Blitz techniques have to be learned as Sabin gains levels. These levels and techniques are as follows: FF3(us) Name/FF6(GBA) Name Pummel/Raging Fist - Level 1 AuraBolt/Aura Cannon - Level 6 Suplex/Meteor Strike - Level 10 Fire Dance/Rising Phoenix - Level 15 Mantra/Chakra - Level 23 Air Blade/Razor Gale - Level 30 Spiraler/Soul Spiral - Level 42 Bum Rush/Phantom Rush - Level 70 or Duncan's House "Bum Rush/Phantom Rush" can be found in the World of Ruin (Second half of the game) by bringing Sabin to the house of his teacher, Duncan. The house is a hidden location, marked by five trees positioned in the shape of a plus sign(+). Stepping into the middle tree will enter the house location. Getting to the house for the first time may be difficult, especially since five trees standing alone can be difficult to see from the airship. On foot however, things are a bit easier to see. Fly the airship to the town of Narshe (at the top middle continent on the world map) and land in front of it. Then land, enter Narshe, and leave Narshe. From the exit/entrance of Narshe follow these directions: 3 steps down 7 steps right 2 steps up 10 steps right 10 steps up 8 steps right 5 steps up If followed correctly, on the 5th step up, you should have entered the house location. ############################################################################### - Blitz Breakdown. Additional Info: Sabin leaps at a random enemy and spirals around it, dealing flashy hit after flashy hit ############################################################################### - Who is Gogo and how he/she/it ties into all of this ------------------------- ############################################################################### Gogo is a character in the classification area known as Mimic. That means that it is possible for him/her/it to mimic the abilities of other characters, including Sabin. That means that if Sabin has learned a Blitz, Gogo can use it, if Blitz has been set to be in Gogo's command menu. To do this set up, all you have to do is go into the main menu (press X/Start somewhere out of battle or cinematic), scroll down to Status and select Gogo. In the next section that pops up, point the hand at any of the blank spots under "Mimic" and press A to bring up a selection menu of all abilities that can go in the slot. Select Blitz and you'll be all set. To use Blitz with Gogo, all you have to do is the same thing you would do with Sabin. Except for stat differences, command menu differences(you may have Blitz set up in the second, third, or fourth slot), and the fact that Gogo is now using the skills, there are no differences. ############################################################################### - Closing Comments ------------------------------------------------------------ ############################################################################### Well, that should be it. All you need to know about Blitz. Well, at least the most important stuff. If I am missing something in any way, or made some kind of mistake, drop me a line through email and I'll see if I can make some fixups... ############################################################################### - Special Thanks -------------------------------------------------------------- ############################################################################### Master ZED - for allowing me to use the Blitz Attack statistics from his Attack Guide and the info about Blitzes learned at certain levels. Terii Senshi - for making that ever useful Algorithm FAQ. Team Rocket Elite - for his "alignment bar" idea that helped with proofreading, editing, and cleaning up the format of this guide. Shark, Mnrogar, and Grand Lord of Chaos - for inspiring me to write this guide. Sapphire Yoshi - for her everlasting support through all of my projects. Atom Edge - for suggesting the addition of a "Common Mistakes" section, info about what levels Sabin learns each Blitz at, and more detailed directions to Duncan's house. assassin17 - for pointing two tyops that were missed and pointing out that MasterZED had info about the levels that Sabin learns each Blitz at. FFXI_Laude, Omniviet - for providing some info on name changes. HitokiriFyre - for asking a question about using Blitz from the Back Row. I never even thought of putting info about it and from what I can tell from seeing other people's FAQs (Besides the FF3(us) Algorithm FAQ which implies that only the Fight/Attack command is affected by being in the Back Row), nobody else did either. Quattro - for for asking where to find available Blitz info in the game. This prompted me to add in some quick directions on how to check what Blitzes you have in the Blitz Mechanics section. capefeather - for casually mentioning the small timer on Blitz in a messageboard topic at GameFAQs. Initially, I believed it was a mistake and made a reply claiming my idea that it was an unlimited timer, which led to... Novalia_Spirit - for giving a second confirmation about the small timer and giving a description on when it occured. This led me to testing it meself and confirming it. Imzogelmo - for stumbling upon the the timer between key entries in the first place when playing around with a hex editor. ############################################################################### - Update List ----------------------------------------------------------------- ############################################################################### v2.0 - May 2, 2007 Well, something I've always believed to be true was just proven wrong today. Apparantly there is a timer on Blitz that I missed when I originally tested it. The info's in there now. Also, I decided to add a section about "Component Diagonals", which prives an origin for the alternate commands for some Blitzes. v1.9 - February 15, 2007 Added another small section on how to check the Blitzes you have available in the game itself. Also, fixed the romanization of the Japanese Blitz nmes a bit. v1.8 - February 9, 2007 Added Japanese names of each Blitz. They're all easy to translate except for one... Phantom/Bum Rush is "Mugentoubu". "Mugen" definately means "Infinite" but "Toubu", from what I can tell, means "Head" or "East". If someone has a better idea of what it means, email me. v1.7 - February 8, 2007 Fixed spelling mistakes. >_< Also, added a small bit about using Blitz from the Back Row. v1.6 - February 7, 2007 Wow, its been 3 years since my last update. Well, Final Fantasy 6 was released on the GBA and piles of people need to learn or re-learn how to use blitz. Also, the flood of blitz questions on the Final Fantasy 6(GBA) easily reflects that PEOPLE NEED HELP. I've updated some information to reflect changes in naming conventions and a few button commands (due to the lack of an X and a Y button on the GBA) between Final Fantasy 3(us) and Final Fantasy 6(GBA). v1.5 - January 21, 2004 Submitted it to GameFAQs again... Not accepted. Seeing that blitz questions are still rampant across the Final Fantasy III board and the regulars still support my guide, I've gone back to work to refine this guide even more. More description has been added to the Basic "How To" areas and I've tried to make each section more "independant" so that a person who needs help doesn't have to jump from reference to reference to get one piece of info. v1.4 - March 1, 2003 Changed the "newbie questions" to things that are less demeaning v1.3 - March 1, 2003 Added a Common Mistakes section to Blitz Mechanics, info about levels that Blitzes are learned at, fixed some typos, and added more detailed directions on how to get to Duncan's house in the World of Ruin. v1.0 - February 24, 2003 First release. It should cover practically everything that is needed to know about Sabin's Blitz. ############################################################################### - Legal Info ------------------------------------------------------------------ ############################################################################### Places where this guide is currently okay to be posted: GameFAQs http://www.gamefaqs.com -Yoshi6400's Web Zone- http://members.shaw.ca/yoshi6400 SharkGaming http://sharkgaming.web1000.com/sg3/ Zed's Unoriginal White Sheet http://masterzed.cavesofnarshe.com/ Final Fantasy 3(us)/Final Fantasy 6(j) copyright 1994 Squaresoft.
