Introduction -- [INTROD] ----------------------- "bit Generations" is a new series of games for the Gameboy Advance from Nintendo. Each games features minimalist graphics and sound, with simple but innovative gameplay. These games are targeted at older gamers that may be put off by complex gameplay. One of the games of this series (and my personal favorite) is the game "Dotstream" (originally called "dotliner"). The game sounds pretty simple: You're a colored line. Get to the right side of the screen before the other five colors to win. But, in typical Nintendo style, the game proves to be more complex than meets the eye. There are power-ups to acquire, enemies to avoid, turbo boosts, and line meters. Plus, there are lots of things to unlock and lots of replayablity. As of now, this game is unfortunately only available in Japan. But, thankfully, the game is completely in English. Ironically, though, the entire instruction booklet (and game box) is in Japanese. Since the game is a "budget" title, it's pretty affordable. You can purchase it online for a mere $25 (which is a steal for an import). =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- --------------------- -- 4. Game Modes -- [GAMEMO] --------------------- The following modes are presented at gameplay startup: Campaign - A set of five races to complete. Compare this to the various "cups" found in Mario Kart. Initially, you only have the option to play "Sonic Gp" (Red). As you complete GP's, you will unlock more colors. There are a total of 6 different campaigns. Learn more about strategies for each of these levels in the "Tracks/Campaign" section. Spot Race - Here you can play all the courses you have already completed in "Campaign" mode. It lists your best time for each course. Any course with an additional square in the upper-right hand corner are those in which you placed 1st. Any grey-colored squares are levels which you have not completed, yet. Formation - Unlocked after your complete Sonic GP and finish 1st. This mode is one continuous course in which you collect "energy tanks" to stay alive. As you place 1st in other GP's, you will unlock more "formation controls" that can be used to control additional lines. One of these is the line you are controlling. [E] - Your total number of speed boosts. This number will drop if you hit an object. If you hit an object and have no more boosts left, you are forced to retire. [F] - Your current speed. [G] - Your line speed. This line increases as you stay close to other opponent lines. If this line goes past your current speed [F], your speed will increase. [H] - Your current item. It will only be shown if you have an item in your possession. Items/Power-Ups -- [ITEMSP] -------------------------- During the race you will be able to pick up certain items. These are flashing little symbols inside a square box. You can only have one item at a time and you can press the "A" button to use it. When you've collected it, it will show up in the bottom-right corner of your screen. You must activate it for it to work. Enemies/Obstacles -- [ENEMYO] ---------------------------- During many races, you will encounter a variety of different enemies and obstacles. Some can be helpful and/or hurtful, and others are just plain frustrating. Here's an overview of the names of the objects you will encounter (to my best knowledge), a cute ASCII picture, their description, and how to best avoid them while racing. --------------------- Dot-filled Shapes / . . . . . . . . . . \ ================= \ . . . . . . . . . / --------------------- Description: ------------ These are the first obstacles you encounter, and they are pretty harmless. They come in all different shapes and sizes, but you can distinguish them by the alternating dots inside of a solid-lined shape. Running into them will simply slow you down. You can tell when you're passing through one, because a riff of music will play that differs based on which campaign you are on. You can still move about freely if you get caught in them, but you will be moving a bit slower. You can use still use a turbo-boost while caught in one, but is not recommended. Your opponents will rarely run into this obstacle. You will continue to build your line gauge (provided you are adjacent to a line) if you go through one of these shapes. How to avoid: ------------ The best way to avoid them is to go around them. For the later races, it is sometimes easier to just go through them. Unlike other obstacles, they will not alter your direction when you run into them. You can also make them transparent (and thus ineffective) if you use a star item. By doing so, however, this will make them transparent for your opponents as well. ______________________ Hollow Rectangles | | ================= | | |______________________| Description: ------------ Unlike the dot-filled shapes, these shapes are not so pleasant. They come in either rectangle or square shape and have absolutely nothing inside (hence the name "hollow"). Running into them will stop you momentarily, change your direction, and cause you to lose a turbo boost. If you run into one of these when you have no more turbo boosts left, you will be forced to retire early. Running into this object is the only time your line will move completely vertical. Your opponents will rarely run into this object, if at all. Your line will either move up or down vertically, based on which half of the square you run into (assuming you are moving in a straight line). If you run into the top half of the square, your line will move up vertically and continue right over the top of the square. If you run into the bottom half of the square, your line will move down vertically and continue right under the bottom of the square. If you hold up while crashing, or approach at an upward slope, your line will move up and around no matter where on the square you hit. If you hold down while crashing, or approach at a download slope, your line will move down and around no matter where on the square you hit. To illustrate the last paragraph, I've drawn an ASCII diagram. Hooray for ASCII! I've made the enemy square out of I's so it stands out better. The ----'s in the middle represent the middle of the square. The ___'s and /\'s represent the lines. The line numbers are next to each in ()'s. (1)______ \ IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII \I I (2)____________I I I I I----------------I (3)____________I I I I /I I (4)________/ IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII Line (1) is approaching the square at a downward slope, so it will move down vertically and around the square. Line (2) is approaching the top half of the square as a straight line, so it will move up vertically and around the square. Line (3) is approaching the bottom half of the square as a straight line, so it will move down vertically and around the square. Line (4) is approaching the square at an upward slope, so it will move up vertically and around the square. Of course, no matter which direction you are coming from, or which half of the square you hit, you can override these game physics by holding the up or down arrow as you crash, moving you vertically up or down, respectively. If the rectangle you hit borders the top or the bottom of the screen, you will bounce back in the opposite direction. For instance, if you hit a square while holding down, you will begin to move down vertically, but you will bounce off the bottom wall and move up vertically and over the square. This will cause you to lose even more time than before! And then, certain rectangles will disappear all together when your line crashes into it. Which means that all of the above mentioned physics do not apply to these objects. It is difficult to distinguish these rectangles, though, as both look the same to me. If you know how to tell the difference, please let me know. Otherwise, I think it's a random game of guessing. Hopefully, I've explained all this well enough. Who knew you could talk so much about rectangles and some lines, huh? Much of this stuff becomes second nature when you play the game regularly, but is important to consider in the beginning. How to avoid: ------------- As you can tell by the above paragraphs, rectangles stink! For some squares, as long as your line does not crash into the left edge, you will not be hit. However, it is difficult to tell which squares allow you to do this and which do not. Your best bet is to go over or under the object, if possible. You can also use the star item to make the rectangles transparent. By doing so, however, this will make them transparent for your opponents as well. --------------- \ \ \\ \\ \\\ \ Speed Bursts \ \ \\ \\ \\\ \ ============ / / // // /// / / / // // /// / --------------- Description: ------------ This is one of those obstacles that can either be helpful or hurtful, the choice is yours. These objects have a green border with white arrows on the inside. Passing over this object, even just a little bit, will temporarily maximize your speed and allow you to go faster. You do not need to pass your line over the entire object to fill up your speed. However, do pay attention to your line angle when approaching the speed bursts. If you approach the object diagonally, you will not go as far as if you approach the object as a straight line. So, why isn't this classified as a power-up? Because it's not always a good thing. You will find that speed bursts aren't always placed in the best of positions. Sometimes, they will be placed right before a hollow rectangle. Those cruel level designers! Your opponents may or may not go through this object. The AI only seems to go through it when it's convenient for them. How to avoid: ------------- An even better question to ask is, should you avoid it? There are some speed bursts that are harmless and you can pass over without any difficulty. Some however, are right before an obstacle and aren't worth the trouble. Always be aware of the objects directly after the speed burst. Also, consider how much out of your way you'll have to move to reach this object. Sometimes, it's just better to continue in a straight line. You can not destroy speed bursts with any item, however this can be a good thing. If a speed burst is directly in front of a hollow rectangle, using a star will turn the rectangle transparent, thus allowing you to use the speed burst without worrying about crashing. This "obstacles" section is a work is progress. I will add more objects when I get the time. Below is a list of objects I plan to add. Strategy/ Tips -- [STRATG] -------------------------- Technique and skill both play a big part in this game. If you master some basic and advanced techniques, you can do very well in this game. Here are some general tips that apply to levels within the game. They're grouped into categories, for your browsing convenience. For more specific breakdown of strategies for each track, check the "Tracks/Campaign" section. Note: The majority of these tips only apply to the "Campaign" and "Spot Race" modes. Basic Rules ================================ - The goal in this game is to be the first line to make it to the right side of the screen first. Line Movement/Control ================================ - Unlike other racing games, there is no button to hold down to continue accelerating. Your line will continue to move right. - You can not change your direction or back-track. You can only speed up or brake. - Stay as close to other lines as possible. Doing so, after a bit of time, will increase your overall speed. - You can only increase your line speed by being adjacent to a line that is ahead of you. If you are in first place, you will not be able to increase your line speed. - Use your speed boosts wisely. If you use them up too early, when you crash into things, you will be forced to retire. It is best to use them only where there is a clear stretch of land. - Moving up or down will cause you to lose a little bit of speed. Try to stay straight as much as you can. - Your line's slope when moving up or down will be the same no matter how fast you are going. Always consider your diagonal direction when encountering obstacles. - There is no way to start at any speed higher than what you begin the race with. - You can not build up your speed gauge while traveling diagonally, even if you adjacent to a line. Your gauge only build ups when horizontal. Opponents ================================ - All of the colors you can pick are essentially the same. There is no speed or technique difference. I recommend picking the color that you can see the easiest. For me, that is usually the brightest color (like a neon green, yellow, or pink). - You can not stay on top of any one line. Doing so will push you above or below the line, depending on your last movement. For example, if your last motion was up, you'll be bumped upwards. Use this to your advantage. When you are pushed, you do not lose any speed, unlike when you move up or down yourself. This can be good for "gliding" off another's line. - Follow the other lines closely, especially in the beginning of races. By watching their movements, you can better anticipate upcoming obstacles. - Even though you will see other lines run into walls and enemies, they will never completely run out of lives. You will always race against five other lines. - It is a good idea to have as many lines visible when approaching a large group of enemies. Your opponents will tend to run into these moving objects, helping to clear the way for you. If they are not on the screen, however, all of the enemies will be present. - Unlike traditional racing games, this game never specifically tells you what place you are in. It only tells you your location relative to the other players. Watch this bar closely, especially when other players are out of view Obstacles ================================ - You can only run into vertical lines. Running into the top or bottom edges of either the track or solid obstacles will bounce you off and slow you down, but will not harm you. - There are many levels with seemingly difficult obstacles. A lot of these obstacles can be avoided if you keep your line close to the bottom or top edge of the screen. Power-Ups ================================ - You can score some extra speed boosts by sliding into the diamond (pit stop) on the bottom of the screen right before the end of the lap. You can earn a maximum of 9 speed boosts, but doing so will cause you to fall behind the other players. Use B if you want to stop refilling your speed boosts early. Be careful when you use this trick, as it sometimes may be more frustration than it's worth. - You can not use your turbo boosts for the first few seconds of the race. This is denoted with a grey diamond, instead of a flashing diamond. - Be careful when you use your turbo boosts around enemies. If you use a turbo boost and crash into an object, your boost will prematurely end. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- --------------------------- -- 11. Tracks/Campaign -- [TRACKS] --------------------------- Each campaign is coded a certain color. There are 5 tracks in each campaign, each a lighter shade than the previous. Once you have selected your color for the first race, you can not change your color at any time during the rest of the campaign races. As with other racing games, you play the five tracks in a specific order, and earn points based on your ranking in that race. The GP scores are as follows: 1st - 10 2nd - 8 3rd - 6 4th - 4 5th - 3 6th - 0 If you run out of lives/turbo boosts, you automatically retire from the race and place 6th. However, you can still continue playing the next track in the GP, if you desire. You must manually retire from the GP (from the pause menu) to completely start over. I recommend starting over completely if you get 6th place in an early race. In order to unlock other classes and formations, you must place 1st overall in each GP (i.e., get the most number of points). Refer to the unlockables section for information on what can be unlocked after each GP. Soon I will give strategies and tips for each level within each campaign. FAQ -- [FAQFAQ] --------------- Q: Why do I start off so slow? Where's the accelerate? A: There wouldn't be any challenge if you started off at the speed of every one else. There is no accelerate, which is a nice change from most racing games. Instead, you increase your speed by staying close to other lines. See section 5 for more info. Q: Is there any difference between any of the color lines? A: Not that I'm aware of. Q: I have a question about the game. Can you help me? A: I can try, but please don't send me any questions that are already answered in the FAQ. That's what it's there for :) Q: If this game is from Japan, how much English in there? A: Surprisingly, the whole game is in English. You should be able to navigate it just fine. Don't expect to be able to read the instruction booklet, though. Q: Do you think they'll ever bring this to America? A: That's a tough one. I'm not really sure. Even if they do, it wouldn't be for a while. If you really want to play this game, I recommend importing it. Q: I heard that they have ESRB ratings for each of the games. Doesn't this mean we should expect it in American sometime soon? A: Not necessarily. There's a lot of theories around this one. You can never be too sure of Japan's strategy when it comes to bringing games over to the states. It would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath. Q: Where's the best place to import it from? A: I recommend Play-Asia (http://www.play-asia.com) as they have good prices and reliable shipping. You can find it elsewhere online, but you should NOT pay more than $25 for it. Q: Will this Japanese game work on my American DS/GBA/Micro? A: Yes! Yay for no region encoding! Q: This game already has a save on it. How do I delete it and start fresh? A: As soon as the game starts press A+B+L+R and keep it pressed. You should see some Japanese info pop up. When you release the buttons the screen turns black and you’re asked whether to delete the save (yes or no). Q: Something you wrote is wrong or incorrect/I have something to contribute!
