This is the third Shining Force on Game Gear. As this game never made it to the US, not many people had a chance to play it, but it is a great game never less. I will do my best to make this FAQ as helpful as possible without ruining the game by telling people what to do for every simple step. Feel free to email me at a3637370@hotmail.com if you have any questions or find any part of the FAQ ambiguous. Though, don't expect instant replies to your emails, give it a few days. Emails that will be ignored: Hatemail or any kind of offensive email. Email bragging about your stats. Email that rudely tells me that something is wrong in my FAQ; I appreciate corrections as I make mistakes all the time, but if you're going to correct me, do so nicely. I realize the game is in Japanese so many game players may have trouble telling what weapon/item they are equipping/using. To resolve that, everytime something is found, try equipping it on someone, and the screen will show who can be equipped with it and who cannot. If a character is turned around, he/she cannot be equipped with it. If everyone is turned around, it means the item you found is not a weapon or accessory. Then save the game and try using it on someone. If someone can be equipped with it, it is either a weapon or an accessory. If it gives +5 to attack or defense it is the power ring or the defense ring. If it increases the attack power by a larger amount, it is a weapon. If only sword users can equip an item you just found, and it gives +21 to attack, it is a Broad Sword. For more specific numbers look at the weapon and item sections. I'll repeat this again later on. To make it easier for the readers to find what they need, I'll give a brief overview of all the sections in this FAQ. There will be a character guide in which there is an introduction to all the characters and my evaluation on the characters. I will also have a small section about maximizing stats. The spells section, rather then listing all the spells and describing what they do, it will mainly consist of what spells each character have and at what level they learn it. The weapon and item sections will simply list the weapons and items. The walkthrough section will go through each battle and list the items or secret characters in each battle. There will be pointers and strategy given for each battle. _____________________________________________________________________ ii Disclaimer _____________________________________________________________________ This FAQ is for personal use only. Could not figure out how much MP Darksol's head had since Demon Breath doesn't cost MP. Version 0.5 (8/02/2004) - Changed my email address listed as the current one listed is now closed. - Took out the Monster and Boss sections since their stats are now included in the Walkthrough. - Included enemy stats for all battles. - Started to include story notes for between battles. - Updated the credit section Version 0.2 (11/13/2002) - Minor update. Updated the credit section, it now includes Moogie's SF FC site for reference. Also fixed a typo in the character section where Kojiro was misspelled as Kijaro. Also fixed an error at the end of the walkthrough section, thanks to Doom3000 for the correction. The final boss is Darksol in his Devil Form, not Dark Dragon. I've also included a link to a translation script by Moogie. The link is in the new section xi, while credits is now section xii. I will have a major update in the character section, walkthrough section, and monster/boss section hopefully by the end of the year. Version 0.1 (11/5/2002) - First version. I should be updating the Monster FAQ and Boss FAQ in the near future. The walkthrough section isn't complete either. I plan on going into details in later versions; my schedule lately is much tighter than I expected. _____________________________________________________________________ iv Character Guide _____________________________________________________________________ In this section I will list all of the characters, their initial stats, their character class, and my evaluation of the characters. For the characters who can be promoted, there will be two classes listed for the character, and the class after the arrow is the class after promotion. Like in all other Shining Forces, except SFII, the characters can promote at level 10, but they can be raised to level 20 before promoting. This game in particular, I would strongly advise you to at least promote a few characters at level 20. Unlike Shining Forces on Genesis where you can get infinitely stronger, you stop gaining much of any stats after level 20 promoted, which is in fact a pretty low level to stop gaining stats. This also means that characters who join promoted will probably be weaker then characters who had the advantage of level 20 promotions; there are a few exceptions though. By the way, by stop gaining much of any stats, I mean very minimal gains if any, so don't email me and tell me you got +1 to attack at lvl 23. Remember that the evaluations are based on my experience and my opinions. Due to the random stat gains my personal experience may not fit with the normal cases, so if you feel that anything I say is terribly wrong, feel free to email me. In part b) there will be a mini-section of how to make the best party and maximize stats. a) Characters Characters are listed in the order they join. For information of which battle they join, refer to the walkthrough section. 1. Ian Class SDMN -> HERO Initial Stats LV : 01 HP : 12 MP : 08 AT : 13 DF : 06 AG : 05 MV : 06 Evaluation Ian is the leader of the force, and naturally he's quite well rounded in all areas. If you promote him at level 20, he will get quite strong at the end. His HP is decent while his attack and defense are pretty high also. Since you don't get much of any stat gains after lvl 20 promotion, don't expect his HP to go far pass 70. It will probably end in the mid-60s. In fact I did not get any character's HP pass 70 without a cheerful bread, and almost any character from the beginning can end up with about 60 HP. Ian can be a front line fighter as he has decent HP and defense, but it's quite dangerous as he will be the target of all the monsters, and many monsters at the end have special attacks which can deplete 60 HP rather quickly. He also learns Bolt 4 which you don't really need, but it's always useful to be able do 50-60 damage from far away. 2. Mead Class KNTE -> PLDN Initial Stats LV : 01 HP : 11 MP : 00 AT : 12 DF : 04 AG : 04 MV : 07 Evaluation Mead will be the leader for the first battle only. He is a pretty averaged knight and paladin after promotion. He doesn't seem to get enormous stat boosts at any levels. If promoted at level 20, his attack and defense can become quite decent, but not quite as high as Sylvia. I would use Sylvia instead. Paige Class SLDR -> WARR Initial Stats LV : 01 HP : 07 MP : 00 AT : 13 DF : 07 AG : 03 MV : 05 Evaluation Like the other warrior type characters in other Shining Forces, Paige gets very high defense and decent attack. His HP however is not too high, but not too low if you decide to promote him at level 20. However, any character will have enough HP if promoted at level 20. Paige can be your front line fighter, as he can take lots of physical attack. Hawel Class MAGE -> WIZD Initial Stats LV : 01 HP : 08 MP : 08 AT : 09 DF : 05 AG : 05 MV : 05 Evaluation Hawel is the first mage you will have. He gets both Blaze 4 and Freeze 4, making him quite strong. If he's promoted at level 20, he'll have decent HP and defense. He will have much more MP than Minto if promoted at level 20, and his spells also costs less MP. Knuckles Class MONK -> MMNK Initial Stats LV : 01 HP : 11 MP : 06 AT : 08 DF : 04 AG : 03 MV : 05 Evaluation Knuckles is the first Monk on the team, and can be promoted into a mastermonk later. Before and after promotion, his attack rises quickly in early levels but slows down quite a bit after level 10. His attack becomes quite high if promoted at level 20, and his HP will become pretty high also. If not promoted at level 20, his HP is quite low and defense isn't near the top either. Sonette Class ACHR -> SNIP Initial Stats LV : 01 HP : 10 MP : 00 AT : 10 DF : 05 AG : 04 MV : 06 Evaluation Sonette is the only archer in the party, and therefore it's best to keep her throughout the adventure. She gets decent attack power and low defense. If promoted at level 20, her attack becomes quite high, and her defense will be decent also. She gets decent HP like everyone else who can promote at level 20. Cynthia Class HEAL -> PRST Initial Stats LV : 04 HP : 12 MP : 06 AT : 11 DF : 07 AG : 08 MV : 05 Evaluation Cynthia is the first healer to join, and she's the only character with Aura. She starts with little MP and most likely will end up with less than 50 MP, even if she's promoted at level 20, so she can only use Aura 4 twice, but that should be enough. To my surprise, her attack and defense gets quite high. From level 10 to 20 unpromoted, her attack increased by 2 every level and sometimes by 3. Her defense increases at a steady rate also, so she shouldn't be killed by physical attacks easily, but her HP ends up very low, and can be killed by special attacks or magic easily, so keep her in the back. Ruburan Class THIF -> NINJ Initial Stats LV : 05 HP : 13 MP : 00 AT : 20 DF : 09 AG : 08 MV : 05 Evaluation Ruburan is kind of like Slade from Shining Force II, as he starts out a bit weak, but can be promoted to NINJA and gains magic. If promoted at level 20, his attack will easily go over 90. From level 10-20 unpromoted he seems to always get +2 to attack and defense, and level 1-10 promotion he often gets +3 to attack. Aside from having insanely high attack power, he can also attack from one space away, which comes in really handy. His defense isn't at the top, but it comes out decent if you promote him at a high level. I suggest promoting him at level 20 if you don't plan to do so with anyone else. Kiddo Class BDMN -> BTLR Initial Stats LV : 08 HP : 20 MP : 00 AT : 24 DF : 14 AG : 10 MV : 06 Evaluation Kiddo is quite decent. He has the obvious advantage of being able to fly, and won't be slowed down by terrian. His attack is pretty high, while his defense is quite low. His HP isn't really up there either. If he's promoted at level 20, his attack may easily end up in the high 80s, while his defense should also become high enough to take a few hits. He's not your frontline fighter, but still a pretty decent attacker. Sylvia Class KNTE -> PLDN Initial Stats LV : 09 HP : 22 MP : 00 AT : 31 DF : 17 AG : 11 MV : 07 Evaluation Silvia is the only other centuar besides Mead, and in my opinion she is much stronger than Mead. Her attack increases steadily and finishes up quite high, while her HP is very high. However, her defense is a bit low. If she's promoted at level 20, her attack can get quite high, and her defense should become decent too. She can be a frontline fighter to block the special attacks and magic since she has lots of HP. Julia Class BDMN -> BTLR Initial Stats LV : 09 HP : 21 MP : 00 AT : 29 DF : 15 AG : 10 MV : 06 Evaluation Julia is the female birdman; she's not as strong as Kiddo, and her defense is quite low like Kiddo. I would prefer Kiddo over her unless you really want two birdmen in your party. She can also be promoted at level 20, in which case her stats will become pretty decent, but still not as good as Kiddo. Eric Class DGMN Initial Stats LV : 02 HP : 25 MP : 00 AT : 35 DF : 20 AG : 12 MV : 05 Evaluation Eric is another flying member. His attack, defense, and HP all increase steadily. Unfortunately he joins promoted and will not be the top attackers, unless you promote everyone else at level 10. His HP is still decent and has reasonably high defense which will enable him to take some damage in the frontline. Minto Class WIZD Initial Stats LV : 03 HP : 21 MP : 21 AT : 27 DF : 13 AG : 14 MV : 05 Evaluation Minto the Kyantol is your second wizard. She also comes promoted and probably will not get as much MP as Hawel, but her spells are quite good, as she learns Freeze 3, Bolt 4, and Desoul 2. Her HP and defense is very low, so keep her protected so she can cast spells safely. Her MP will most likely deplete after two castings of Bolt 4, which is a downside. Morton Class MMNK Initial Stats LV : 04 HP : 29 MP : 18 AT : 44 DF : 22 AG : 13 MV : 05 Evaluation Morton is a mastermonk who comes promoted also. His attack can become decent, but his defense is pathetically low, and his HP is not that high either. He will most likely die in a few hits. He learns the Quick spell, which can enable himself to level up quickly, but you don't really need to level him up a lot anyway. His attack increases very quickly past level 10, and should end up near 80, but his defense is still too low, and he probably should stay in the back. Sasuke Class NINJ Initial Stats LV : 06 HP : 23 MP : 14 AT : 48 DF : 23 AG : 16 MV : 05 Evaluation Sasuke is a secret character. He is a NINJA and comes promoted. His attack increases quickly at first, but it doesn't seem to increase at all past level 14 or so. Like Morton, his defense is pathetic. His HP is not very high either, and his agility is quite low, which is odd since he's a ninja. He learns Katon and Raijin, which are alike to Blaze 4 and Bolt 4 but stronger. However, his MP is very low and will not be able to cast his spells too often. I suggest using Ruburan over this guy, although it's nice to have two ninjas in the party. Ridion Class WARR Initial Stats LV : 09 HP : 36 MP : 00 AT : 50 DF : 35 AG : 16 MV : 05 Evaluation Ridion is another character that comes promoted. Needless to say his stats isn't as good as the characters with the advantage of a level 20 promotion. His attack grows quickly at first, and slows down dramatically before starting to increase again. His attack isn't the best, and his defense is quite low for a Dwarf. He's not really worth using over Paige. Kojirou Class SMRI LV : 10 HP : 39 MP : 00 AT : 60 DF : 33 AG : 17 MV : 05 Evaluation Another secret character who comes promoted. Surprisingly his attack ends up along with the best attackers. Pass level 10 he gets +2 to both attack and defense every level, and his attack should easily reach 80, while defense around 50. His HP is quite low however, and can be killed easily by special attacks Max Class HERO Initial Stats LV : 12 HP : 45 MP : 25 AT : 60 DF : 40 AG : 20 MV : 06 Evaluation People who have played Shining Force I on Genesis should be happy to see this guy. It's Max from SFI, and he can use magic now. He joins promoted at level 12. Imaginably he will be quite a lot weaker than those who can promote at level 20. On the other hand, unlike Kojirou, Max doesn't get any impressive stat gains for the eight levels he is able to gain any stats. If you promoted everyone at level 10, Max might be pretty strong among the force, but if you promoted everyone at level 20, Max will be quite behind in all areas compared to the rest of the force. I keep him on the force just because of who he is. Oddeye Class GRVL Initial Stats LV : 12 HP : 44 MP : 31 AT : 58 DF : 36 AG : 22 MV : 06 Evaluation Another surprise, it is Oddeye the Greater Devil from Shining Force II. Now we get to play as him; too bad he is only playable in the last battle. Like Max, he only has eight levels to gain any stats, and his stat gains are not very impressive. He ends up weaker than Max, with an attack in the mid 60s, which is much lower than Cynthia. He still has his nice special attack he had in SFII, but it never seems too useful, just cool to look at. I was pretty disappointed with both Max and Oddeye; they should have been made to be stronger so they can stay in the party not just for show. b) Stat Maximizing In all these Shining Force games, you can pretty much make a godly party with any characters you want. In the Gaidens on Game Gear and Shining Force CD however, you'll have to choose mostly from the characters who can be promoted at level 20, as the characters who come promoted do not have a lot of levels to gain any stats. If you want to maximize the entire party's stats, you'll obviously have to promote everyone at level 20 if possible. One easy trick is to save before a character levels up, and reset the game until you get a satisfying increase. I always do that for the main characters in the SFs I played, as a result my main character always becomes very strong compared to the other party members. In order to maximize stats, for attackers, it is best to focus on attack. If you make sure the characters get increments in attack every level, it's likely that their defense and HP will increase along with it. Most of the strongest characters have a few levels where they will get massive attack increases, but no increase at all in some levels. If you make sure they do get at least +1 to attack in those levels where they normally don't increase in attack, they will finish up very strong. For magic users, it is better to focus on HP, MP, and defense. Try to make sure they get an increase in both HP and MP every level. Below is a recommended team easiest to maximize in stats. Most of the characters within my recommended team joins from the beginning, because they have the most levels to gain stats. Of course you can use any member you want and still make a godly team, but these are just my suggestions: Ian - He's the main character. Promote him at level 20 and use the save-reset trick everytime he levels up. Make sure he gets +2 to attack for every level between level 1 and 10 unpromoted, that would start him off well. Paige - He starts at level 1, and has potential to be very strong. Promote him at level 20 for the best results. His attack and defense should get quite high, while his HP will be decent also. Hawel - He gets great spells, so he's an obvious choice. If promoted at level 20, he should have decent stats in every department. For every level, try to make sure he gets an increase in HP, MP, and defense. Knuckles - He also starts at level 1, and his stats increases pretty quickly in the start. If you use the save-reset trick with him every level, and promote him at level 20, he'll have very high attack. Sonette - As the only archer, she's an obvious choice. Her attack can become quite decent if promoted at level 20. She should be able to get +2 to attack every level between 1-10 unpromoted if you use the save-reset trick. Her attack can easily make it to the mid-80s. Cynthia - You can either maximize her stats ignoring her attack power, in which case she will probably have a little more MP, but not much more. So I would suggest maximizing her attack so she can play offensive also, but it's up to you. She also has lots of room for stat increases. Before promotion, make sure she gets MP and attack every level, and HP most of the time. She doesn't get much attack increments before level 10 unpromoted, but if you make sure she gets 1 every level, it'll be decent by level 10. Pass level 10 unpromoted, she gets +2s and +3s to attacks along with +2s to defense. After promotion, she doesn't get much more in the offensive department, so make sure she gets MP and HP every level, so she can at least finish up with 40 MP and HP. She should get decent defense too. Her attack should be close to 80, and that's without the Evil Ring. Ruburan - He's a must have, as his attack can easily reach ??. Before promotion, you don't really have to worry about him. He'll get +1 or +2s to attack before level 10 promotion. After level 10 unpromoted, he'll get +2s to attack, sometimes +3. After promotion, make sure he gets +3 to attack for the first five levels, which shouldn't be hard. Also make sure he gets +2s from lvl5 to lvl 10. His attack should already be pass 90 and it shouldn't be too hard to get him pass 99. In some of the later levels he doesn't get any increase in attack after saving and resetting many times, but he will if you reset long enough. As his attack reaches ??, his defense should also be pass 50 with HP at about 60. Kiddo - Needless to say, promote him at level 20. After level 10 unpromoted, he gets +2s to attack and defense every level until level 20. He should be quite strong after promoted. Just use the save-reset trick to have his attack increase as much as possible. His attack should be able to hit 90 or at least in the high 80s. Sylvia - Promote her at level 20 also. She joins at level 9, and should be able to get +2 to attack for the first two levels, and +1 until level 20 unpromoted. After promotion, she should be able to get +2s to attack every level up until level 10. Her attack should end up in the mid-80s, and defense at about 55. Her HP should be well pass 60. Julia - She's on the list because she can also be promoted at level 20. I haven't used her extensively so I'm not sure how her stat rolls are at every level. Her stats should become decent as long as you make sure she increases in attack every level. She can fly and has high movement, and you can take out the monsters quickly. Minto _ Her stats won't be great, but she has great spells. Make sure she increases in MP and defense for most of the levels, and HP most of the time. From level 5 to 10, she should be able to get +2s to MP every level. Try to get her MP up to 40. Kojirou - He starts at level 10 promoted, and will have at least +2 to both attack and defense every level until level 20. Sometimes he will get +3s instead, so you might want to reset until his attack increases by 3 instead, or don't reset at all and his attack will easily reach 80. His attack will reach 90 if you save and reset for every level, but it's not quite worth it. His agility is very low and won't be attacking very often. Oddeye - He's required to be in the party in the two final battles. I got him to level 20 and used the save-reset trick on him. His attack still only went up to 63, and defense 53, which is decent. Doesn't have a whole lot of HP either. _____________________________________________________________________ v Spells _____________________________________________________________________ In this section, I will list the spells for every character and at what levels they learn it. I will not be describing what the spells do as they are very obvious even to first time gamers. If you cannot figure out what the spells do on their own, look at any other Shining Force FAQ on the site and they will have the same ones. There is a difference from SF1 in how a character gains the spells. As in, in SF1 if a character gains Bolt 2 at level 12 promoted, the character will gain the spell at level 2 if she was promoted at level 20. In all the Gaidens, including this one, you still have to wait until level 12 promoted even if the character was promoted at level 20. For example, if Ian gains Bolt 1 at level 5 promoted, and Bolt 3 at level 12 promoted, you can have him learn Bolt 1 at level 15 unpromoted, but he still won't learn Bolt 3 until Level 12 promoted. Below, right under the spell name is the level of the spell. Below that is the level needed to learn the spell. A "p" after the level if the character needs to be promoted. "cwi" means the character comes with the spell when he/she joins. Keep in mind that, if the level is "5p", it means level 5 promoted, which also means the character can learn it at level 15 unpromoted. ---------------------------------------------- Ian Egress level 1 cwi Bolt level 1 level 2 level 3 level 4 5p 8p 12p 17p ----------------------------------------------- Hawel Blaze level 1 level 2 level 3 level 4 cwi 8 6p 16p Freeze level 1 level 2 level 3 level 4 4 3p 12p 19p Attack level 1 9p ------------------------------------------------ Knuckles Heal level 1 level 2 level 3 level 4 cwi 4 7p 15p Antidote level 1 level 2 6 2p Sleep level 1 10 Anti-spell level 1 3p -------------------------------------------------- Cynthia Heal level 1 level 2 level 3 level 4 cwi 4 2p 12p Hell Blast level 1 level 2 level 3 level 4 6 4p 14p 18p Confuse level 1 level 2 9 8p Aura level 1 level 2 level 3 level 4 6p 10p 16p 20p -------------------------------------------------- Ruburan (an exeption, Ruburan cannot learn any spells until promoted) Katon level 1 level 2 level 3 level 4 2p 5p 11p 17p Raijin level 1 level 2 level 3 level 4 8p 13p 15p 19p -------------------------------------------------- Minto Freeze level 1 level 2 level 3 cwi cwi cwi Slow level 1 level 2 cwi cwi Bolt level 1 level 2 level 3 level 4 cwi 7 12 15 Soul Steal level 1 level 2 5 10 --------------------------------------------------- Morton Heal level 1 level 2 level 3 level 4 cwi cwi 9 15 Quick level 1 level 2 cwi 11 Hell Blast level 1 level 2 level 3 level 4 cwi 5 13 17 Confuse level 1 level 2 cwi 7 ---------------------------------------------------- Sasuke Katon level 1 level 2 level 3 level 4 cwi cwi 9 18 Raijin level 1 level 2 level 3 level 4 cwi 11 16 20 ----------------------------------------------------- Max Egress level 1 cwi Bolt level 1 level 2 level 3 cwi cwi cwi ------------------------------------------------------ Characters who were not mentioned above do not have any spells. Oddeye has MP but he has no spells. He occasionally uses his special laser attack, but that doesn't cost MP. _____________________________________________________________________ vi weapons _____________________________________________________________________ In this section I will list all the weapons in the game. After the weapon names, the classes that can use the weapon and the attack power is listed. Special effects of the weapons are in parenthesis. If an unpromoted class can use a weapon, you can assume that the promoted version can use it also. For example, SDMN can be equipped with a middle sword, so can HERO. ---------------------------------------------------------- SWORDS weapon equip attack middle sword SDMN,BDMN,SMRI,DGMN,GDVL +7 long sword SDMN,BDMN,SMRI,DGMN,GDVL +12 steel sword SDMN,BDMN,SMRI,DGMN,GDVL +16 broad sword HERO,BTLR,SMRI DGMN,GDVL +21 counter sword HERO,BTLR,SMRI DGMN,GDVL +25 (increases counter attacks) critical sword HERO,BTLR,SMRI DGMN,GDVL +28 (increases critical attacks) chaos breaker HERO +30 katana SMRI +31 (hell blast 2) sword of darkness HERO,BTLR,SMRI DGMN,GDV +35 (desoul 1, cursed) ---------------------------------------------------------- SPEARS AND LANCES (spears have attack range of 1-2 while lances only have attack range of 1) weapon equip attack spear KNTE +6 bronze lance KNTE +9 steel lance KNTE +13 power spear KNTE +18 chrome lance PLDN +22 valkyrie PLDN +24 ----------------------------------------------------------- AXES weapon equip attack short axe SLDR +6 hand axe SLDR +9 middle axe SLDR +14 battle axe SLDR +20 heat axe WARR +24 (blaze 2) great axe WARR +28 ground axe WARR +32 (MOV+1) ----------------------------------------------------------- GLOVES AND KNUCKLES weapon equip attack leather glove MONK +5 power glove MONK +9 brass knuckles MMNK +12 battle knuckles MMNK +15 kaiser knuckles MMNK +22 (MOV-1, cursed) ------------------------------------------------------------ STAVES AND RODS weapon equip attack bronze rod MAGE,HEAL +4 iron rod MAGE,HEAL +9 power stick WIZD,PRST +12 protect staff WIZD,PRST +16 (DEF+5) mystery staff WIZD,PRST +24 (regain 2MP per turn) demon rod WIZD,PRST +30 (steals MP, cursed) ------------------------------------------------------------ ARROWS AND MISSLES (last four listed has range of 2-3 instead of 2) weapon equip attack wooden arrow ACHR +4 iron arrow ACHR +8 steel arrow ACHR +11 robin arrow ACHR +15 assault shell SNIP +19 great shot SNIP +24 hyper cannon SNIP +27 ------------------------------------------------------------- THROWING KNIVES AND SHURIKENS (all have range of 1-2) weapon equip attack throwing knife THIF +8 dagger THIF +14 shuriken NINJ +17 dark shuriken NINJ +25 ------------------------------------------------------------- _____________________________________________________________________ vii Items _____________________________________________________________________ This section will list the healing items, boosting items, and accessories. That's a bit obvious. I will not be listing the locations, as that will be in the walkthrough. For the healing items, all except shower of cure can be bought at any shop. I will be listing the prices of the healing items only. The intention of that is so you know what item your buying, as each 4 healing items have different prices. -------------------------------------------------------------- HEALING ITEMS item price description medical herb 10 restores 10 HP for 1 character healing seed 200 restores 20 HP for 1 character antidote 20 cures poisoned or paralyzed characters angel wing 40 same effect as egress shower of cure 20000 restores full HP to all members. ----------------------------------------------------------------- BOOSTING ITEMS item description power wine permanently increases attack by 2-4 points protect milk permanently increases defense by 2-4 points quick chicken permanently increases agility by 2-4 points mobility pimento permanently increases movement by 2 cheerful bread permanently increases HP by 2-4 points brave apple increases character level by 1 ----------------------------------------------------------------- ACCESSORIES item effect power ring ATK+5, Attack 1 defense ring DEF+5, Quick 1 quick ring AGI+5 mobility ring MOV+2 white ring DEF+10, Aura 2 (HERO, BTLR, SMRI, DGMN, GDVL, PRST) black ring ATK+10, Blaze 2, cursed (WIZD ONLY) evil ring ATK+15, Spark 2, cursed (PRST ONLY) _____________________________________________________________________ viii Walkthrough _____________________________________________________________________ This section will contain all the items to be found and enemy stats in each battle, and a few quick notes. I also indicated how to find the two secret characters in the respective battles that they join. Since this game is in Japanese, I will also contain brief notes about the stories between the battles. Many monsters drop important items and you want to make sure whoever kills them has an open slot in inventory. If you miss it, you can buy it in the Deals from the shops, but for a very high price. In most cases I indicated which enemy drops the items, but not for all the items. For the battles I which I indicate a certain item is dropped by one of the enemies, check the enemy's inventory before killing them. The next two paragraphs are a repetition of what I have mentioned earlier in further detail. I realize the game is in Japanese so many game players may have trouble telling what weapon/item they are equipping/using. To resolve that, for every item found, go back to town or wait until after battle, and try equipping it on someone, and the screen will show who can be equipped with it and who cannot. If a character is turned around, he/she cannot be equipped with it. Refer to the weapon or item section for exact stats. If everyone is turned around, it means the item you found is not a weapon or accessory, most likely a healing seed type item or a stat boosting item. Then save the game and try using it on someone. If it cannot be used, it is a in-battle healing item. If it increases a stat, it is obviously a stat boosting item. Note that for the items found throughout the walkthrough I did not include any healing items except for Shower of Cure in battle #16. Go to a shop and look up what the Japanese characters for the healing items look like and try to remember them or write them down. In the item shop, the 10 dollar item is the medical herb, the 200 dollar item is the healing seed, the 20 dollar item is the antidote herb, and the 40 dollar item is the angel wing. Write the Japanese characters down or remember them so you know it's not an important item when you find one. Now, on to the walkthrough¡K ------------------------------------------------------------ Introduction ------------------------------------------------------------ The introduction scenes will come up if you start up the game and don't press Start for a while. The scenes start with Max and his new party tracking down Mashaela and her henchmen, Lynx, Magus, and Eiku. Lynx is the one with long blonde hair and a crown, the noble villain. Magus is the one with a purple face and one eye, the evil and cowardly villain. Eiku is the one with the blue face and long nose, the typical evil villain without much personality. If you've played Shining Force I on the Sega Genesis, you'll recognize Max (brown hair and green headband), the hero from Shining Force I, and Adam, the robot you acquire late in the same game. Max's new party consists of Mead, the centaur, Paige, the axe warrior, Sonette, the archer, and Ridion, also a Warrior, he is the older looking one. Max pursues Mashaela as she and her henchmen escape, Adam is injured by Eiku's Blaze spell in the process. Max orders Mead, Sonette, and Paige to stay and help Adam, while him and Ridion will continue to pursue Mashaela. The scene ends as Max and Ridion chase Mashaela and her henchmen away. ------------------------------------------------------------ Chapter One ------------------------------------------------------------ The chapter starts with the Elder checking on Adam, as Adam reveals that he will not be able to fight anymore as his injuries are too serious, but he believes the others are still very capable, so they should find Max as soon as possible. Thus, the Elder advises Adam to organize a team for pursuit. A new character, Hawel, is introduced. He is the Mage with glasses. Cynthia, a blue haired cleric, shows up and asks the Elder if Ian should come with them. The Elder mentions that Ian should be tired from training, and tells Adam to go on ahead. Before Adam and the rest of the party leave town for the Ancient Temple, Knuckles, a monk, shows up and apologizes for sleeping late, and he joins the party. As Adam and his party arrive at the Ancient Temple, a thief, Ruburan, and his henchmen are trying to steal the caravan. As Adam cannot fight, Mead will be the party leader, and the battle starts. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 1 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: None Enemies: 4 Blue Oozes HP 8 MP 0 Atk 7 Def 6 Agi 4 Mov 4 4 Goblins HP 10 MP 0 Atk 8 Def 7 Agi 5 Mov 5 Notes: Mead is the leader of the team for the first battle. Be careful as he cannot cast egress. This is an easy battle; take care of the first two Blue Oozes first before advancing further, and kill one of the groups of enemies up top before going to the other side. As your party starts out pretty weak, don't try to separate your party into two, keep them together. After the battle, Ruburan is captured. At first, Mead suspects that Ruburan is one of Mashaela's henchmen, but Ruburan denies knowing Mashaela. Mead and the others decide to take Ruburan as prisoner and head back to Hassan to discuss with the Elder about what to do with Ruburan. As Adam and his party returns to the village, they find that Mashaela and her henchmen had stormed the village. Ian and Cynthia agree to help the party and fight the enemies. Ian joins as the leader from this point on. Cynthia does not join at this point. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 2 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: Quick Chicken in a chest in the upperleft corner of the town. Enemies: 3 Blue Oozes HP 8 MP 0 Atk 7 Def 6 Agi 4 Mov 4 3 Goblins HP 10 MP 0 Atk 8 Def 7 Agi 5 Mov 5 2 Orcs HP 11 MP 0 Atk 10 Def 10 Agi 6 Mov 5 2 Hunter Goblins HP 15 MP 0 Atk 10 Def 8 Agi 5 Mov 5 Notes: Ian joins in this battle and becomes the leader. This is an easy battle and pretty good for leveling up a little. Get everyone to level 3 or 4 if you want. After the battle, Mashaela tries to force the Elder to tell her how to operate the caravan, the Elder refuses. Ruburan confronts Mashaela as he recognized that she was the one who took his men prisoner. Mashaela and Lynx scoff at Ian's party and leaves with the Elder as their prisoner. The Elder asks Ian to find Max before he is taken away. Ruburan claims that he has seen Max before, and Adam asks Ruburan to help them find Max. Adam insists that Cynthia stays behind, despite her wishing to come with them. On their way to Rubuarn's secret hideout, they run into some monsters. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 3 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: None. After the battle, Cynthia still insists on joining, and says that she will be able to help with her healing powers. Adam finally agrees and they continue onwards. As they come across a large bridge, a kraken shows up. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 4 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: None. Don't send any characters far away from the rest of the force alone. This is a pretty good battle to level up also if you want to gain some exp before moving on. After the battle, one of Ruburan's men show up, and informs Ruburan that Mashaela showed up at their secret hideout again. Ruburan and the others rush back to his secret hideout and witnesses Mashaela killing some of his man. Mashaela claims that she will fight their God Volcanon and defeat him. Ruburan tries to stop her, but gets knocked out. Adam confronts Mashaela again, and the next battle starts. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 5 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: Protect milk and Power wine in the two chests. The first chest visible is the Protect milk. The other chest is accessible after the hidden room appears. Enemies: 1 Brass Loader HP 18 MP 0 Atk 15 Def 15 Agi 10 Mov 4 3 Orcs HP 11 MP 0 Atk 10 Def 10 Agi 6 Mov 5 2 Dark Dwarfs HP 16 MP 0 Atk 13 Def 11 Agi 7 Mov 7 2 Hunter Goblins HP 15 MP 0 Atk 10 Def 8 Agi 5 Mov 5 8 Giant Bats HP 16 MP 0 Atk 13 Def 11 Agi 7 Mov 7 Specials Sleep Notes: This battle isn't too hard as the enemies are not too close to each other. The hidden room will appear in the top side of the map and four Giant Bats will charge out if anyone goes too close, so don't send anyone over there by himself/herself, unless the character is strong enough to take on all four of those bats, which is not all that difficult for that matter. Ruburan joins after the battle. He tells his men to stay behind and protect their hideout. Ian's party catches up with Mashaela as she tries to seal off Volcanon's power. She escapes again, and leaves her henchmen behind to deal with Ian and his party. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 6 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: Cheerful Bread obtained by killing the Dark Mage. Make sure whoever kills him has open space in his or her inventory. Be careful as the Dark Mage in the end has Blaze 2, so don't line up your characters too closely when approaching him. After the battle, the party meets with Volcanon. He advises the party to go to Grans Tower. Kiddo, the Birdman, joins after this battle. ------------------------------------------------------------ Chapter Two ------------------------------------------------------------ The chapter starts off with Mashaela discussing her plans with her three henchmen. Lynx claims that he should be able to capture Max soon. Mashaela mentions that Ian should be no threat, and Eiku promises to bring Ian in. Mashaela tells Eiku to wait because it is Magus' job to deal with Ian. In the meantime, Ian and his party are heading north to Palacon. They run into Magus' henchmen as they pass through a cave. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 7 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: Protect milk in the chest at the upper left of the map. I suggest going around the map if possible. After the battle, Ian and his party continue to advance towards Palacon. Meanwhile, Magus is trying to take over Palacon. As Magus is having trouble with taking Palacon by force, he causes the river to overflow and floods the Palacon troops. Ian arrives as Magus tries to take the castle. Magus decides that they have to deal with Ian first. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 8 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: Brave apple in the chest. After the battle, Lynx shows up and scoffs at Magus' incompetence. They both leave. Sylvia the knight and Julia the Birdwoman joins after the battle. Sylvia suggests that they rest in Palacon before advancing. The game now switches to a cut-scene where Eric, a Dragonman, of breaking army regulations, and brought to Magus. Eric claims that he wants to see Mashaela, and that is the reason he joined the Devil Army. Lynx releases Eric from his chains and challenges him to a fight. They both give up after a few rounds, and Eric flies away. Lynx mentions that he wished to defeat Eric in a fair fight and did not go after him, and he leaves too. Magus is now upset as he now has to find Eric or he'll be in trouble. Back to Ian's party, they are still heading north, and run into Magus' search party for Eric. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 9 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: None. Take out the two Orc Lords and the Dark Knight to the left in the beginning, then go to the far right to take out the Dark Smoke, Dark Sniper, and Orc Lord. Then slowly work up the middle. After the battle, Ian's party heads to Moun. The scene switches to a conversation between Magus and Lynx, where Lynx accuses Magus of using unfair tactics in battle. As Magus refuses to change his strategies, Lynx leaves. In the meantime, Ian's party reaches Moun and is greeted by three residents. They claim that the Devil Army has already withdrawn and invites the Shining Force into the town. Ian's party follows the residents into the town. Eric appears and tries to get into Moun, but the gates are locked. Adam realizes that this was a trap, as Magus appears, and the three residents turned into monsters. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 10 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: Robin Arrow in chest in the upper right of the map. Quick Ring in and one of the wells, and a Steel sword in the other well. The well in the bottom left has the Steel sword if I remember correctly. The enemies are quite far apart making the battle pretty easy. Keep to the right and go up to the treasure chest and take out the enemies there, but watch out for Blaze 2. Then move towards the Dark Knights and take the small group of enemies out one at a time. After the battle, Magus is in disbelief as his army is defeated again. He reminds Ian that they barely escaped with their lives and leaves. Eric reveals himself to be Elliot's son. For those who haven't played Shining Force I on Genesis, Elliot was the proud General working under King Ramaladu of Runefaust, who was manipulated by Darksol and the Devil Army. Eric wants to help defeat the Devil Army and joins the force. The scene switches to Mashaela disgruntled at Magus for his failure, and giving him one last chance. Lynx agrees to help Magus, and agrees to use unfair tactics as it was Mashaela's command. However, Magus is still angry at Lynx and tells him to get out of his sight. Eric leads Ian and his party to the northernmost part of the Parmecian continent, which is where the Nazca ship was in Shining Force II. They run into Magus again here. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 11 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: Power Spear and Battle Axe in the treasure chests. Watch out for Freeze 2 when approaching Magus. Minto joins after the battle. After the battle, Magus finally dies, and the force meets Goddess Mitula. She tells Adam that they will have to face Max. She arranges a magician from Tristan, Minto, to go with them. Ian also receives the Necklace of Light from Mitula. Minto shows the Nazca ship to the force, and they are off to Grans Tower. To avoid confusion, you never get to control the ship, your party just rides on it this one time, and that's it. ------------------------------------------------------------ Chapter Three ------------------------------------------------------------ The chapter starts off with the force running into some monsters in a remote location. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 12 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: Protect ring in the only treasure chest, make sure not to miss it. Morton, a Mastermonk, shows up after the battle. He informs the force that the Devil Army has defeated Max. He joins the force. Morton informs the force that the Devil Army now occupies Galam, and they should stop by at Roft village first. Eiku's henchmen show up at this point. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 13 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: Protect Staff dropped by one of the Witches. The next battle is good for leveling up, so I wouldn't waste too much time here. After the battle, Adam decides that they should deal with Eiku as soon as possible. They stop by Roft village first, and head to Eiku's fortress. The scene switches to Eiku and Lynx's conversation. Eiku accuses Lynx of letting Magus die, and claims that if the Shining Force comes to his fortress, they will be annihilated. Lynx tells Eiku not to underestimate the Shining Force and leaves. At this point, the Shining Force arrives. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 14 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: The only chest contains a Valkerie, best weapon for paladins. Get everyone's level as high as you can in this battle. Don't go to close to the Master Mage, he'll retreat up to the top. The Hydras are quite strong so watch out for them, and the witches have Blaze 3; most the enemies give good experience in this battle. After the battle, the Shining Force continues to advance into Eiku's fortress. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 15 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: The treasure chest to the right contains a Heat axe. Gargoyles also appear throughout the battle, so don't have any characters to far away from the force. This is a pretty good battle for leveling also. If you leveled a lot in the previous battle, you probably won't have to level too much in this one. After the battle, Eiku dies, and the Shining Force find the Elder being held captive in the fortress. They rescue the Elder and rush out of the fortress as it collapses. As the Shining Force continue to advance and come across a desert valley, they run into Mashaela. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 16 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: Shower of cure and Mobility pimento in the treasure chests. Sandworms appear throughout the battle. This battle is annoying due to the landscape; I wouldn't waste much time here. You fight Mashaela in this battle. She has Bolt 2 so watch out for that. After defeating Mashaela, it is revealed that they only defeated Mashaela's doll. The real Mashaela shows up and kills the Elder. She leaves. Adam swears revenge on Mashaela. ------------------------------------------------------------ Chapter Four ------------------------------------------------------------ As the Shining Force continues to advance, they run into Lynx. You fight Lynx who only has physical attack. He shouldn't be too hard; finish off all the monsters before approaching him. Ridion the old dwarf joins the force after the battle. After the battle, Ridion shows up, and says that he and Max were defeated in a fair battle against Lynx. Lynx reveals that Max is now at the Ground Seal Ancient Tower, and that the tower is filled with evil power, as Darksol and the Devil King Zeon are both at that place. The tower is where the Devil King was sealed away, and the evil power will be used to revive Darksol. Lynx then dies. Ridion advises that they hurry to the Ancient Tower. The Shining Force arrives at Galam and meet with the King. The King reveals that Galam has been taken over by the Devil Army. The Devil Army finds the Shining Force at this point, and they fight. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 18 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: Kaiser knuckle in the chest. It's a cursed glove so don't be all that anxious to equip it. One of the enemies can drop a Power ring, one of the Arch Knights or Cannon Knights I believe. Check all the enemies in the upper half of the map and see which enemy has an item, and make sure whoever kills that enemy has an open slot. You'll get the Chaos Breaker after this battle. Make sure Ian has an open slot in his inventory or you will be forced to throw something away. After the battle, King Galam gives Ian the Chaos Breaker. As the Shining Force advances, they confront more of Mashaela's henchmen. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 19 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: Demon Rod dropped by Mishaela doll. Mystery Staff dropped by one of the enemies. Evil Ring also dropped by one of the enemies. Kojirou is found there and will join. This battle is quite hard, as the High Witches have Freeze 3, and the Lesser Demons have Bolt 1. The magic balls explode after being killed or if any characters are in range for a few turns, so watch out for that too. This battle gives decent exp, but I usually prefer to level up in the next one. Reaching the Ancient Tower, the Shining Force confronts Mashaela again. At this time, Max walks onscreen, wearing the Mask of Darkness. He is now wielding the Dark Sword and being controlled, just like Kane, Max's older brother, was in Shining Force I. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 20 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: Ground axe in the treasure chest. Hyper cannon dropped by the uppermost Cannon Knight. White ring dropped by the Dark Shaman near Max. Lots of the enemies in this battle give 49exp even after level 20 promoted, so get everyone up to level 20 in this battle. The final battles aren't good for leveling, since weak characters will get killed off easily, so you want to do it in this one. Max joins after this battle. You can equip him with the Dark Sword he carries with him. After the battle, Adam is unable to remove Max's mask. Oddeye from Shining Force II shows up. He reveals that the mask can only be removed by a Devil, and he helps remove the mask. Oddeye explains that he is a Greater Devil under the Devil King Zeon, thus Darksol is his enemy too. Oddeye then leaves. After Max regains consciousness, he praises the new Shining Force, and he joins. As the Shining Force confront Mashaela for the last time, Mashaela reveals that Ian is actually Kane's son. Twenty years ago, a prophet in Manarina gave Max's older brother, Kane, a prediction, that Darksol will be revived at this very place. Kane then sent away his son, Ian, to defeat Darksol. As they speak, Darksol's revival is near complete. Oddeye shows up again, and tries to talk Mashaela out of it. Mashaela ignores him, and Oddeye joins the force to help stop Darksol's revival. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 21 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: None. Fortunately not every one of them shoot every round. Try to spread the characters out and proceed upwards as fast as you can. Go to the sides where the status cannot fire at you to finish off the monsters in the beginning. Oddeye will fight for you in this battle as the 13th character, and you can control him. After the battle, Mashaela's powers are exhausted. She sacrifices herself to revive Darksol. ------------------------------------------------------------ Battle 22 ------------------------------------------------------------ Items: None. His left hand casts Freeze 3 and right hand casts Spark 3, and the head casts Demon Breath. Finish off his hands first and don't bunch all your characters together. Just make sure Ian doesn't die. If you cast egress you will have to fight the previous battle again. After the battle, Darksol is in disbelief that he has been defeated. Mitula shows up and tells Darksol that the Devil King Zeon, his opposition, who was also sealed away at the same place by him, has hindered his complete revival. Mitula then tells Ian to throw the Necklace of Light at Darksol, which destroys Darksol. All members of the Shining Force rejoice as Darksol has been defeated. Oddeye walks off the screen. ------------------------------------------------------------ Ending ------------------------------------------------------------ Ridion tells King Galam that Darksol's powers are still present, and still may be revived in the future. They decide to place the Chaos Breaker in the Ancient Shrine for a future Shining Force in case of another revival. King Galam also decides that someone needs to protect the Ground Seal, who will become the King of Ground Seal. Ruburan suggested one of his men, Nosshu, who was the one who came to inform Ruburan of Mashaela's attack on the secret hideout way back during the Kraken battle. Hawel and Nosshu decide to build the Kingdom of Ground Seal together. _____________________________________________________________________ ix Translations _____________________________________________________________________ A link for the script translation for Shining Force Final Conflict can be found at: http://www.shiningforcecentral.com/gamescripts _____________________________________________________________________ x Credits _____________________________________________________________________ Thanks to Moogie for allowing me to use her guide for reference to the initial character stats, weapon and item names, enemy stats, and the level in which each character learned their spells, also some of the item locations.
