Super Monkey Ball - Monkey Golf FAQ Copyrighted 2001 by Sega Written By Brian P. Sulpher E-mail: briansulpher@hotmail.com Date Written: July 24 to July 25, 2002 I dedicate this FAQ to my brother Michael. He decided to get this as a launch title game instead of Rogue Leader. I was mad then, but you most definitely made the right choice. Also, for Cougar. I miss you, and I hope you are living it up in the afterlife as you did in this world. You will always be in my memories, and you will never be forgotten. ----------- Version 1.0 ----------- -Submitted guide on July 25th, 2002 ----------- Version 1.5 ----------- -Submitted guide on April 14th, 2003 -Altered fromat ----------- Version 2.0 ----------- -Submitted guide on January 23rd, 2004 -Changed copyright slightly -Altered fromat -Edited some info to make it clearer and more comprehensive ----------- Version 2.1 ----------- -Submitted guide on February 23rd, 2005 -altered the format somewhat -I added in Honestgamers as a site allowed to use my FAQs ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------Table Of Contents---------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Introduction 2) Controls 3) Options 4) Shot Distance Stats 5) Rules 6) Hole Stats 7) Hole By Hole Walkthrough 8) Final Word ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------Introduction-------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) This FAQ came to be when I saw the need for a few in-depth Super Monkey Ball FAQ's. This one is about the mini-game Monkey Golf. This is a very addictive, but frustrating distraction from the more popular main game, Monkey Fight, and Monkey Target. Monkey Golf is a game of great strategy, proper aim, and precise movements of the ball. This FAQ will help to get you a head start on this challenging game, allowing you score lower than ever before. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------Controls----------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2) This section will let you know all of the controls for optimum playing ability. o-----------o | Putt Mode | o-----------o ANALOG Stick: Aims the ball with lEFT and RIGHT. The two players choose their Monkeys. e) c and d both then give you the option of change settings and game start. You can change the number of holes from a full 18, to OUT (will play first 9 holes), and IN (will play last 9 holes). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------Shot Distance Stats--------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4) This section will review the four available shot length bars, with markers for specific distances on each. o---------------------------o | 10 Yard Distance Strength | o---------------------------o 0.0 2.5 5.0 7.5 10.0 yards +----------+----------+----------+----------+ | | | | | +----------+----------+----------+----------+ o---------------------------o | 20 Yard Distance Strength | o---------------------------o 0.0 5.0 10.0 15.0 20.0 yards +----------+----------+----------+----------+ | | | | | +----------+----------+----------+----------+ o---------------------------o | 40 Yard Distance Strength | o---------------------------o 0.0 10.0 20.0 30.0 40.0 yards +----------+----------+----------+----------+ | | | | | +----------+----------+----------+----------+ o---------------------------o | 80 Yard Distance Strength | o---------------------------o 0.0 20.0 40.0 60.0 80.0 yards +----------+----------+----------+----------+ | | | | | +----------+----------+----------+----------+ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------Rules---------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) This section will review the rules of the game, as well as the rules of stroke play/match play. a) Whoever scores lower in stroke play wins. In match play, whoever scores lower on more holes than the other player wins the match. b) making the hole in 1 is a hole-in-one, 2 is a birdie, 3 is a par, and 4 is a bogey. Otherwise, the score in "CUP IN X" "X" being the number of strokes required to sink the ball). c) Falling off of the playing course results in being Out of Bounds (O.B.). This results in a penalty stroke added to your score, and the ball is replaced to the point of origin of the shot that strayed Out Of Bounds. d) There is a limit of 10 strokes per hole. You have till your ninth shot to get the ball in the hole, or else you get the maximum score of 10 as your defaulted score. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------Hole Stats--------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6) This section is going to list every holes distance, slope, and par. Keep in mind the distance may vary on the pin placement on the green. Just adjust your aim to the left a little bit from the default, and hit with just under 3/4 power on 80 yard hitting strength. If you miss, just make the easy second shot for the Birdie. o--------o | Hole 2 | o--------o This hole has an elevated hole, and although the distance says it is 43 yards to the hole, you must hit at about halfway between the 2nd and 3rd hack on the 80 yard hitting strength. If you have over/under shot, and have rolled to a stop farther away than you began, you must hit a little bit harder than was required for the tee shot. This hole can be hard on your score, provided you are unable to reach the top of the fairway. o--------o | Hole 3 | o--------o This actually looks like a real golf hole. You need to hit the 80 yard hitting strength at about 3/4 to get to a close position (just aim to right of the wall). Then you just need to hit the closer shot in for two provided you have a good look. Otherwise, you will likely get a par. You should only score higher than par if you go O.B. o--------o | Hole 4 | o--------o This hole has an elevated green area with the pin. You just need to hit the distance listed to get on. Then it is a simple matter of picking the correct distance on the next shot for the easy birdie. You should do no worse than par here. o--------o | Hole 5 | o--------o This is a challenging hole because you must pick the correct angle so you can: get down towards the hole, and not fly off to the O.B. Aim near the start of the slope at the wall, and hit at 3/4 on 40 yard hitting strength. This will put you at last slope before the green. You must carefully putt down the slope (very lightly) because there is no wall behind the hole (O.B.), and make sure you compensate for the slope if your putt is crooked on the slope. This is a harder hole where birdies are rare, and even pars will often elude you. If you are accurate, then you will thrive on this hole. o--------o | Hole 6 | o--------o This is a banana shaped hole. If you can hit your ball with the proper strength, you can ride the top of the hill all the way to the hole. If you just want to assure a score of 2 or 3, then just aim up the right wall with full strength. You will still end up close, with a fairly easy second putt. o--------o | Hole 7 | o--------o Aim between the two closest hills, and hit it between the 3rd hack and the end of the meter. This will cause your ball to roll close to the hole (even might go in if you are lucky). Then hit easy second shot in. o--------o | Hole 8 | o--------o This hole is shaped like a rainbow, and it slopes left to right. It is very easy to go O.B., so to tee off, use default aim, and hit at half distance on the 80 yard strength to get yourself past halfway point. This will allow an easier second shot. You must make adjustments for any slope in your line. Not an easy hole, with few pars, and fewer birdies. o--------o | Hole 9 | o--------o This is a flat area with holes strewn throughout it periodically. Aim using the C Stick to plot a course of safety, and hit at about 3/4 on 40 yard hitting strength. This will leave a fairly easy second putt. Once practiced, this is a birdie hole 9 times out of 10. o---------o | Hole 10 | o---------o This is a big circle with a hole into he middle. Aim to the left or right of the hole in the middle of the surface, and hit at a point between the 2nd and 3rd hack mark. Then it is a simple putt for two. o---------o | Hole 11 | o---------o This hole is flat with little walls strewn throughout (some are blocking the direct path to the hole). Aim at the first wall on the left that is vertical when compared to your view. If done just right, it is a hole in one when hit at the 3rd hack of 40 yard hitting strength. If it does miss, then you should have an easy tap in for two. Even if you mess up badly, a par is still easy to come by. o---------o | Hole 12 | o---------o This is the hardest hole in the game. The hole and tee are on the same level of ground, but there is a large hill that must be navigated to get from tee to green. This is exceptionally hard, because you need to hit the hole to stay on the other side. Aim somewhere between the second bush at the top (from the left) and the tree to have a chance of this actually working. You will take a lot of 10 scores on this hole, even with lots of practice. o---------o | Hole 13 | o---------o This hole has an elevated tee off position, but it matters not because of the large gully in the way. You must use the wall to ride around to the green. Aim towards the side, and hit between the 2nd and 3rd hack mark on the 80 yard hitting strength. If you hit a good tee shot, birdies are common, but if you flounder on the tee, this hole can be bad for your score, due to landning on the O.B. gully. o---------o | Hole 14 | o---------o This hole starts on a platfrom with a bowling bowl like design that drops to a round platfrom. The two hole closest to the tee drop off to O.B., so you have two options. One is to play it safe, and just hit it between the holes to land safe below, or use the middle hole to go for the hole in one. The problem with going for the hole in one is if you hit too hard, you will end up falling off because of the lip of the platfrom being in the way. Aim at the hole, and use just under halfway power of 80 yard strength, or (the better, more accurate method), of switching to the 40 yard strength and hitting at the 3rd hack mark. This will get a hole in one, or close enough for a tap in for two. A few rounds of experience here, and a hole in one will be common. o---------o | Hole 15 | o---------o On this hole is two half pipe ramps that you must use to shoot over the gaps between them. Aim up the ramp towards the very edge, and hit at about halfway between the 2nd and 3rd hack marks on 80 yard hitting strength. This should land you, and keep you on the other ramp. You then have a straight on putt for the birdie. Once again, your score is dependent upon a good tee shot. o---------o | Hole 16 | o---------o This is one tough hole. The green is elevated, and the only way to reach it is to hit up the wall, and slant your way onto it. Aim to the right or left, and use about 3/4 (or a little more) to get up the hill, and then roll onto the green. Then it is a simple matter of tapping in for two. If you miss your tee shot, you will probably need to hit the ball farther back from the wall to get the proper angle to make the hill. This can be a very frustrating hole. o---------o | Hole 17 | o---------o There are three separate parts of the hole: The tee, a pyramid, and a green; all floating over O.B. that can easily be reached. You need to hit onto the pyramid to roll to the green. Aim for the top area (a little to the right), and hit at 3/4 power of the 80 yard hitting strength. This should put you on the green (although you will barely hold onto the small hill at the back). Then just tap in for two. This is a hard hole no matter how much practice you have put into it, mainly due to the smallest of errors usually cause your Monkey Ball to roll off the platfroms and down into the O.B. o---------o | Hole 18 | o---------o This is yet another tough hole to contend with. It has an elevated green, and it has an O.B. pit underneath it. Aim directly at the middle of the green, and hit at just under 3/4 power on 80 yard hitting strength to make the green. If you mess this up, then you will need to figure out the power require to get up there because your distance will be different than the tee shot. The tee shot makes or breaks you as it has for most of the holes, mainly due to the guesswork you must do if you muff up the tee shot. Also remember that if you are too close to the launching ramp, you will be unable to launch the Monkey Ball high enough into the air, so you will need to burn a stroke by hitting backwards (which is preferrable to hitting the ball futiley into the O.B. every time). As you can tell, the front nine is much friendlier than the back nine. I advise you to start there with a beginner so they can get a feel for the game, before you subject them to the horrors of the back nine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------Final Word---------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8) As is the usual, this walkthrough is copyright property of Brian P.
