Since the game was released, the SA2B board (and my inbox) had been filled with questions about the little guys, and usually the same questions were asked many times. And so, I began work on this guide. I will try to cover as many aspects as I can about them, and perhaps later on, the Tiny Garden you can get when you link up your Game Boy Advance. :) (a) Version History Ver. 1.0 - 2/17/02 My first FAQ/Guide! Began work it, and most basics and evolutionary paths are covered. Still need the Hero and Dark 2nd Evolution paths, as well as the Normal/Swimming Chao. Ver. 1.1 - 2/18/02 Added more Black Market items, as well as Chao Transporter information. Also added Stadium section. Ver. 1.1a - 2/19/02 Yet more Black Market items, and a complete guide to the Tiny Garden. Ver. 1.2 - 2/20/02 Added info on selling items. Also corrected a few things, as well as credit to those who had provided me with the info in the Credits section. Ver. 1.3 - 2/23/02 Frequent Questions Section added, and a few minor corrections made here and there (typos, etc). Also, added an egg or two to the list. Ver. 1.4 - 3/12/02 A few more eggs, a few typo fixes and general text corrections. Ver. 1.5 - 3/13/02 Added a few things here and there, more corrections. Whee. Ver. 1.6 - 3/16/02 Added an Animal Location section, which walks you through to getting certain animals for your Chao. ^^ Ver. 1.7 - 3/28/02 Dark Chao Evolution guide done. Ver. 1.8 - 7/01/02 Not much this time around. More corrections, updated contact information and such. I hope to get around to finishing the evolution stuff soon. Also, I will no longer be answering any email with questions clearly answered within the guide. So please, before you waste you time (and mine) sending an e-mail, double-check it is NOT mentioned anywhere within this guide. If it is, I shall personally point and laugh at you. Ver. 1.9 - 8/8/02 Typo fixes, completed Animal Location Chart. ============================================================================= [2] - The Basics ============================================================================= This section will cover the basic things you'll need to know when raising and interacting with your Chao. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (a) Hatching When you first enter the garden, you'll notice an egg or two sitting somewhere around there. They are Chao, and you must now hatch the egg to release the creature inside. There are several ways to go about doing this, each having an effect on it's temperament. The first and best way is to pick up the egg, and while still holding the action button down, move the control stick in any direction. Your character will now be gently rocking the egg, which pretty much guarantees that your Chao will be a happy one. You could also leave the egg be, and let it hatch on it's own. This has a more random effect on how your Chao's overall attitude is, but usually doesn't produce Chao as happy as ones who were hatched by the first method. The last way to hatch your Chao is to pick up the egg and throw it. I don't recommend doing this, as it makes your Chao quite displeased at you. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (b) Feeding your Chao Another thing you'll notice when you enter the garden are the trees. These trees grow fruit that Chao like to eat. To get fruit from the tree, walk up to it and press the Action Button when the words in the corner of the screen says "Touch". Hold it down, and press the Control Stick in any direction to start shaking the tree. Eventually, some fruit will fall, and you can now pick it up and give it to your Chao. The fruit already found in the garden will raise stamina, but there are other kinds of fruit you can give your Chao. These will be explained later. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (c) Raising Stats One of the main aspects of Chao raising is getting it's stats up so it can race, and now in this Game Cube version of SA2, fight against other Chao in Chao Karate. When you pick your Chao up or give it an item, you'll see a box appear with your Chao's name, and level for each stat. Example: ________________ Chao's Name --> | Zingy | |Swim 0558 | |Lv.24========== | Stat --> |Fly 0239 | <-- Stat Points Stat Level --> |Lv.19========== | <-- Stat Bar (there are 10 small |Run 0440 | bars here, when all of them |Lv.29========== | are filled, that stat's level |Power 0340 | will increase by 1, and the |Lv.19========== | point number will increase.) |Stamina 0700 | |Lv.31========== | ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ There are a few ways to increase your Chao's stats: - Chao Drives: These are colored tubes that will raise one particular stat. You can find them in the action stages of the game from the G.U.N. robots. Here are the stats that each color of drive raises: Green: Run Purple: Fly Red: Power Yellow: Swim Each drive given to your Chao will raise 2-3 bars. - Animals: These little guys can alter multiple stats when given to your Chao, and usually give it a body part resembling that animal (i.e., colorful tail from the peacock, and striped paws from the tiger). You can find these wandering around the action stages, and in Eggman's robots. Animals have, as you may have noticed, different colored borders. Like the drives, these colors represent the stat which that animal will raise best. Stat Chart A positive number means that this stat will be raised by that number of bars, while a negative number decreases. Two dashes indicate no change. Note: these may not be 100% accurate, as sometimes the amount differs by one point. ___________________________________________________________ | Border Color | Animal | Run | Fly | Power | Swim | | Green (Run) | Cheetah | +4 | -1 | +1 | -1 | | | Boar | +3 | -1 | +2 | -1 | | | Rabbit | +4 | +1 | -2 | -- | | Purple (Fly) | Parrot | -2 | +5 | +1 | -- | | | Condor | -2 | +6 | +2 | +2 | | | Peacock | -- | +5 | -1 | +1 | | Red (Power) | Tiger | +2 | -2 | +4 | -1 | | | Gorilla | -- | -- | +4 | -1 | | | Bear | +1 | -1 | +4 | +1 | | Yellow (Swim) | Otter | +1 | -1 | -2 | +4 | | | Seal | -- | -- | +1 | +4 | | | Penguin | +1 | +2 | -3 | +3 | | Blue (Normal) | Ram | +2 | +1 | +2 | +1 | | | Skunk | +2 | +2 | +1 | +1 | | | Raccoon | +1 | +2 | +1 | +2 | | Black (Ghost) | Skel.Dog | +4 | +1 | +2 | +1 | | | Bat | +1 | +4 | +1 | +1 | | | Sea Creature | +1 | -- | +3 | +3 | | Orange (Legend) | Unicorn | +3 | +1 | +1 | +2 | | | Dragon | +1 | +1 | +3 | +2 | | | Pheonix | +1 | +3 | +2 | +1 | ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Also, I tested these (about 10 of each animal) on an adult Normal Chao, and I'm not sure yet if evolution path alters the amount. If anyone can help out there, that'd be great. :) - Fruit: Different fruit can also affect different stats. You can buy different fruit from the Black Market with the rings you collect in the action stages. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (e) Breeding After a while, your chao may sit down with a circle of flowers around it. This means your Chao is in it's mating season. Bring another adult Chao (it must have evolved once) next to it, and if they like each other enough, they'll do a cute little dance, and a new Chao egg will appear! Note: If both Chao are in their mating season, they will mate no matter what. Give them a heart fruit to make an adult Chao enter it's mating season. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (d) Death and Rebirth When your Chao grows old, it'll form another coccoon, as if it were evolving. Only this time, your Chao will not come back. :( However, it may leave an egg if you treated it well enough in it's previous life. When that egg hatches, you'll notice it has the same name (if any) you'd given it. Your Chao has been reborn! These rebirths are important, especially if you wish to get some of the cooler Chao in the game. :) ============================================================================= [3] Animal Locations ============================================================================= Thanks to Matt (baritonedude@yahoo.com) for taking the time to type this section up for me. All is left unaltered, with the exception of formatting and a few spelling errors. Below this is a chart of which animals can be found in each level. ^_^ Please note that these aren't the only way of getting animals for your Chao, and possibly not even the easiest way. I'm not going to accept any more submissions for these, as there are too many locations. :) HOW THE STRATEGY WORKS Begin a level and then perform the given strategy to get the desired animal. Then simply pause and exit the level and reenter it. Repeat this process until you have the desired number of animals (you can only carry with you 10 animals and/or drives per hero/dark side). Please note, that any rings you acquire in this process are NOT saved to your ring total. A majority of the game is required to have been completed as well as some upgrades. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Bat Level: Sand Ocean (Robotnik/Eggman) Strategy: Walk towards the camera and drop to the platform below. Go to the left for the bat. Esitmated time: 5 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Bear/Ram Level: Sky Rail (Shadow) Strategy: Both animals are in the same area, so I've combined them into one section. After going down the rail you start on, land on the lower platform with the bouncy spring. Near it is the Ram. If you take the bouncy spring to the upper ledge, the bear is walking between some pole things on the immediate right of where you should land by taking the spring. Estimated time: 12-20 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Boar Level: Radical Highway (Shadow) Strategy: Just before taking the boosters that take you through the first set of loops, jump onto the yellow trashcan-like structure for the boar. Estimated time: 20-35 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Cheetah Level: Wild Canyon (Knuckles) Strategy: Yet another simple animal to get. Get off the starting platform and run to the back of the room. To the left is a statue and at it's feet is the cheetah. Estimated time: 10-18 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Condor Level: Eternal Engine (Tails) Strategy: Yet another simple animal to get. The condor is under the red cylindrical canister on the left side of the starting room. Estimated time: 3-5 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Dragon Level: Wild Canyon (Knuckles) Strategy: Snag a few rings, then jump into the blowing air. Fly up then glide towards the lonely statue area. Climb above his head and dig into the beetle/oval shaped area of the painting. You will now go to a separate room with an altar. Climb the wall--the dragon is in the upper corner of one of them. Estimated time: 40-60 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Gorilla Level: Mission Street (Tails) Strategy: Take out the robots in the starting area, then whistle at the mailbox (it is red) to the right. Estimated time: 5-10 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Half Fish Level: Egg Quarters (Rouge) Strategy: This one requires a little practice on picking up bombs. Try testing prior to attempting this level by picking up chao fruits and then setting them down. Mastery of this will make the process of this strategy much faster. Begin by going to the left of the start of the level into the room with the snake altar and several pillars. Run to the back of the room where you will find a cage with the half fish in it. Here's where it gets interesting. Climb the pillar with the Kiki monkey robot on it. When you're at the edge stay there and let the monkey robot look at you for a bit. When it creates a bomb, jump off of the pillar. It should throw the bomb at you. Now, run to the bomb, stop movement completely, then hit 'B' to grab it. If the bomb hasn't been on the ground for too long it should stay in your hands. Please note, that what carrying a bomb it will NOT explode until you throw or drop it. When you get a bomb in your hands place it in front of the cage and then immediately run out of the immediate vicinity of the bomb. Once the cage is blown away grab the half fish. If the kiki closest to the cage accidentally kills itself, or if you kill it, restart the level. Its much easier to use that kiki. Also, if the security beetle robot enters the room, stand in the shaded area by the pillar to avoid being caught. Estimated time: 30-45 seconds if you can quickly get a bomb 1-2 minutes if you have bomb difficulty ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Parrot Level: Security Hall (Rouge) Strategy: Run down the path towards the spikey robot, and take a left. Climb onto the huge black crate and take the bouncy red spring between two gray crates. From here jump and glide from the platform you land on and fly to the left (assuming you were facing away from the wall on the platform). Glide to the large grayish crate with a computer on it and get the parrot. Estimated time: 20-30 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Peacock Level: Dry Lagoon (Rouge) Strategy: Look around one of the palm trees in the small lagoon (starting area). its location is to the left relative starting plaform. Estimated time: 10-20 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Penguin Level: Metal Harbor (Sonic) Strategy: After going through the first loop and being launched off the ramp, the penguin is to your left on the platform you land on. Estimated time: 15-20 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Phoenix Level: Weapons Bed (Robotnik/Eggman) Strategy: This is the longest of the animals to get. Even though it takes a lot of time to complete this strategy, you do get two phoenix as well as several other animals and drives. You must get all three chao crates to get phoenix #1. Begin by getting the chao crate at the end of the first aircraft carrier (the one you start the level on). it is next to the last garage and is fairly easy to find. The second chao crate is on the second carrier. Towards the end are a few cylindrical tanks on the right. The crate is near them. The third is on the third carrier. First begin by taking out any of the hawk and beetle robots that fire bombs from the ground. Then grab the lift and take out the hovering ones. Glide from the lift towards the cylindrical tanks at the end of the carrier. On top of the larger one is the first phoenix. By this point you should have gotten the two other chao crates. Get off the tank then walk behind it (towards the edge of the carrier) for the last crate. It will contain a phoenix if you got the other two crates. Estimated time: 4:10-5:00 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Rabbit Level: Cosmic Wall (Robotnik/Eggman) Strategy: From the start, go to the right of the black crates. Estimated time: 4-5 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Raccoon Level: Mad Space (Rouge) Strategy: The gray crate directly in front of you at the start of the level contains a raccoon. Estimated time: 2-3 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Seal Level: Weapons Bed (Robotnik/Eggman) Strategy: At the end of the first (starting) carrier there is an animal pipe between a couple cylindrical structures that contains a seal. Estimated time: 15-25 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Sea Otter Level: Prison Lane (Tails) Strategy: Another fairly simple process for two otters. Destroy all the beetle robots in the first room (don't forget the one way up high that you can hit by getting on the raising platform) to upen the gate to a pipe. Whistle and the first otter will come out. Note: sometimes I've had a sheep come out instead. The second otter is after the first hall. Blast the silver crate under the black crate to create a staircase. Get to the top, hover to the roof of the caged in area, and get the second otter. Estimated time: 30-45 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Skeleton Dog Level: Pumpkin Hill (Knuckles) Strategy: Jump and glide into the red balloon, giving you an extra height boost. Continue gliding to the left until you land on the platform with a rocket on it. Take the rocket to the top of Church Mountain. The skeleton dog is among the graves and is pretty easy to see on your descent from the rocket. Estimated time: 8-12 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Skunk Level: Hidden Base (Tails) Strategy: This one is simple. Just walk to the right on the starting platform. It's that easy. Estimated time: 1-3 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Tiger Level: Hidden Base (Tails) Strategy: After getting down from the starting platform, take out the hawk (bombing) robot and proceed to hover to the angled red platform with a crate on it. Blow up the crate as well as the hawk robot, and take the tiger. Estimated time: 20 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Animal: Unicorn Level: Dry Lagoon (Rouge) Strategy: Begin by grabbing a couple of rings, then taking out the two robots aimed at the turtle. Grab one of the chaos drives they drop (preferably a red, assuming they drop one - this is to make up for the unicorn's lack of providing a power ugrade). Take the turtle to the big lagoon, get on the lower central platform with the pillar. Get into the center of the platform and whistle-revealing the unicorn. Estimated time: 30-45 seconds ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now you shouldn't have any problems getting the animals you want/need, as long as you have the levels open and the necessary tech upgrades. If you're looking to create an ultimate chao (Angel, Devil, Chaos), here is a supplementary checklist so you don't end up giving them the wrong animal. bat ___ rabbit ___ bear ___ raccoon ___ boar ___ seal ___ cheetah ___ sea otter ___ condor ___ sheep ___ dragon ___ skeleton dog___ gorilla ___ skunk ___ half fish___ tiger ___ parrot ___ unicorn ___ peacock ___ penguin ___ phoenix ___ Animal Location Chart All levels listed, except Cannon's Core. I'll try to provide some insight to some of the different paths your Chao can take. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (a) Normal Chao These are Chao that are neither Hero or Dark (and can race in all races), an`d can be gotten by raising it equally by both Hero and Dark side characters. Keep an eye on it's color when it's a child, and don't let it get too light or dark colored, and you should be fine. ^_^ - Evolution Paths 1st Evolution: Running Chao: Give your Chao mostly Green-colored animals. It'll form Sonic-like quills when it evolves! Flying Chao: Give your Chao mostly purple-colored animals. It's head will look as if your Chao were wearing a jester hat, and look alot like NiGHTS. ^_^ Swimming Chao: Give your Chao mostly yellow-colored animals. It's head will be horizontally longer, and have fins of sorts on the side, making it look like a strange fish. :) Power Chao: Give your Chao mostly red-colored animals. It's head becomes horizontally longer, kind of like a spike. Normal Chao: Don't specialize in any certain kind. Looks just like a newly-hatched Chao, only bigger. 2nd Evolution: After a Chao comes from it's first coccoon, you can begin to help it evolve even more. The changes are gradual, and it may take a bit of patience, but the end result is often worth the time and effort. :) Please note that these changes are gradual, and the Chao will *not* form another coccoon, unless it is dying. Also, there is no certain time or amount of drives and animals to do this. Just keep at it, and eventually you'll get the Chao you've wanted. If you have a Normal Chao: Running: Green drives and animals. Tip of Chao's head will grow longer. Flying: Purple drives and animals. Tip of Chao's head will curl a bit. Swimming: Yellow drives and animals. Tip of Chao's head will curl forward. Power: Red drives and animals. Tip of Chao's head will split in two, looking like horns. If you have a Running Chao: Running: Green drives and animals. Chao will resemble Sonic. :) Flying: Purple drives and animals. Chao's spines and toes will curl upward. Swimming: Yellow drives and animals. I haven't gotten a chance to get one of these yet, if anyone could help me here, that'd be great. Power: Red drives and animals. Chao's hands become larger, and it's quills begin to turn upward. If you have a Flying Chao: Running: Green rives and animals. The "horns" will curl, and the Chao will almost resemble a ram. Flying: Purple drives and animals. Your Chao will resemble NiGHTS! :) Swimming: Yellow drives and animals. Chao's "horns" grow longer, and it's arms will look much like flippers. Power: Red drives and animals. Chao's "horns" curl upward. If you have a Swimming Chao: Running: Green drives and animals. Chao's head will become shorter. Flying: Purple drives and animals.Chao's head curls upward. Swimming: Yellow drives and animals. Chao's ears become very large. Power: Red drives and animals. Chao looks as if you've been feeding it too many fruits. ;) If you have a Power Chao: Running: Green drives and animals. Chao's spike curls downward. Flying: Purple drives and animals. I haven't gotten a chance to get one of these yet, if anyone could help me here, that'd be great. ^_^ Swimming: Yellow drives and animals. I haven't gotten a chance to get one of these yet, if anyone could help me here, that'd be great. ^_^ Power: Red drives and animals. Chao becomes darker in color. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (b) Hero Chao You can get a Hero Chao by raising a child Chao with mostly Hero side characters. You'll notice a difference in color, and two antenna - like growths from it's head. If your Chao starts looking like that, you're on the path to getting a Hero Chao, and if you haven't already, the Hero Garden! - Evolution Paths 1st Evolution: Hero Running Chao: Give your Chao mostly Green-colored animals. Chao has a single antenna, and is white and blue in color. Hero Flying Chao: Give your Chao mostly Purple-colored animals. Chao will have two feather-like objects on it's head, and be white and purple in color. Hero Swimming Chao: Give your Chao mostly Yellow-colored animals. Chao will look like it has long years, and be white and green. Hero Power Chao: Give your Chao mostly Red-colored animals. Chao will grow spike-like objects on it's head, and be white and pink (with spots ^_^) in color. Hero Normal Chao: Don't specialize in any certain color. Chao will have the antenna-like growths as mentioned above, and look just like the Hero Chao pictured in the manual.:) 2nd Evolution: After a Chao comes from it's first coccoon, you can begin to help it evolve even more. Hero Chao evolutions coming soon. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (c) Dark Chao You can get a Dark Chao by raising a child Chao with mostly Dark side characters (Shadow, Rouge, and Eggman). You'll notice a difference in color, and the tip of your Chao's head will zig-zag a bit, and its wings will start to resemble those of a bat's. If your Chao starts looking like that, you're on the path to getting a Dark Chao, and if you haven't already, the Dark Garden! Dark Running Chao: Give your Chao mostly Green-colored animals. Chao will get green spines that resemble Shadow. Dark Flying Chao: Give your Chao mostly Purple-colored animals. Chao becomes a dark blue color, and has what looks to be a jester cap on it's head. Dark Swimming Chao: Give your Chao mostly Yellow-colored animals. Looks identical to a normal Swimming Chao, only different in color. Dark Power Chao: Give your Chao mostly Red-colored animals. Chao's head will have a spike, and be red and black in color. Dark Normal Chao: Don't specialize in any certain color. Tip of the Chao's head will zig-zag, and it's wings will look like those of a bat's. If you have a Dark Running Chao: Running: Green drives and animals. The Shadow Chao. The markings on it's quills will turn red. Flying: Purple drives and animals. The quills on the side curl downward, and it's markings become a bright yellow. Swimming: Yellow drives and animals. Quills get a slicked-back look to them. Markings become blue with peach-ish highlights. Power: Red drives and animals. Middle quill turns upward, while the others go down. Chao has a nifty blue color. :) If you have a Dark Flying Chao: Running: Green drives and animals. Tips of the Chao's head are round and ball-like. Bright purple markings on tips of arms, feet, and head. Flying: Purple drives and animals. Zig-zags at tips of the Chao's head are more exaggerated. Light purple and pink markings on tips of arms, feet, and head. Swimming: Yellow drives and animals. Tips of the Chao's head become thin and curl downward, looking like ears. Purple and light blue markings on tips of arms, feet, and head. Power: Red drives and animals. Tips of Chao's head curl upward and towards one another, resembling devil horns. Red and orange markings on tips of arms, feet, and head. If you have a Dark Swimming Chao: Running: Green drives and animals. A cool icy blue color in it's markings. Gets a spike atop it's head, as well as one on the back of it's head. Flying: Purple drives and animals. Dark blue with lighter blue markings. Gets a big spike on it's head, feet appear to be webbed. Swimming: Yellow drives and animals. A very odd-colored chao, with brown, green and yellow markings, with a bit of blue, too. Chao has a spike atop it's head, curling back with a slight zig-zag to it. Also appears to have fins on the side of it's head. Power: Red drives and animals. Three spikes atop this Chao's head. Chao is dark green with lighter green markings, and looks a bit chubby. ^_^ If you have a Dark Power Chao: Running: Green drives and animals. Peach-ish colored markings. Power: Red drives and animals. Chao looks identical, with the exception of a longer spike. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (d) Special Chao There are several special Chao you can obtain, and are considerably difficult to get. There is one kind of special Chao for Normal, Hero, and Dark Chao, those being: Light Chaos Chao Resembles Chaos 0 from Sonic Adventure. First, your Chao must have been reborn twice, and on it's third life. You must now give it one (and only one) of each animal (see above for a list), including the Ghost and Legendary types. It's best that you keep a checklist, just in case you might miss or give more than one of an animal. Once you've done this, feed your Chao a Chao fruit, which you can buy from the Black Market (more on that later). Angel Chao A very cute Hero Chao with long ears. Is pinkish in color. First, your Chao must have been reborn twice, and on it's third life. You must now give it one (and only one) of each animal (see above for a list), including the Ghost and Legendary types. It's best that you keep a checklist, just in case you might miss or give more than one of an animal. Once you've done this, feed your Chao a Hero fruit, which you can buy from the Black Market (more on that later). Devil Chao As it's name implies, it looks like a little devil. :) First, your Chao must have been reborn twice, and on it's third life. You must now give it one (and only one) of each animal (see above for a list), including the Ghost and Legendary types. It's best that you keep a checklist, just in case you might miss or give more than one of an animal. Once you've done this, feed your Chao a Dark fruit, which you can buy from the Black Market (more on that later). These Chao do not die of old age, unlike other Chao. I'm sure they may die if mistreated, however. But you wouldn't do that, right? o.o; ============================================================================= [5] - The Chao Kindergarten ============================================================================= You can do alot of things at the Kindergarten, Such as giving your Chao a name, checking it's health, and buying & selling items for your Chao. I will cover each section in the area, starting with... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (a) The Fortune-Telling House This is where you can name your Chao. There are two ways of doing this: First, the "Fortune Teller" will suggest a random name for your Chao; this is good for those who are stuck on thinking of a good name on their own. If you don't like the name, choose "No", and you'll be given another choice as to if you want a different name. Choose "Yes", and another random name will be given. If you Choose "No", you'll get the chance to name the Chao yourself. If you wish to do this, select "Yes". If not, select "No" to exit the Fortune- Telling House. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (b) Health Center Here you can check your Chao's health, among other things. Select "See the Doctor" to check on your Chao's current condition. Select "Medical Chart" to see a chart with your Chao's name, Ability type, and statistics, much like the box that appears whengiving your Chao an iten, with letter grades next to each one. These represent how well that certain attribute grows, 'S' being the best, and 'E' being worst (S, A, B, C, D, E). You can raise that grade by improving your Chao's ability in that area. Move the control stick to the right (or use the R button) to see another chart, this one with a yellow background, and listing your Chao's unique personality (I have one that says "Big Eater" there, and sure enough, he loves to eat, and always does so as if he were starving, with the exaggerated movements ^_^), Favorite fruit, Age, the number of times your Chao had transformed (rebirth), and it's current condition. Move the control stick to the right again (or use the R button) to see a red-colored chart listing your Chao's racing and Karate records. The Racing area will show the medals and such that Chao has won, and the Karate area will show a Win/Loss/Draw record, as well as it's rank. Selecting "Cancel" will return you to the main area of the Kindergarten. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (c) Principal's Office Not much here, just a small help section. Choose "Tips" to see a list of various topics, and select the one you'd like to know about. You'll get a brief explanation about the topic you selected. Choose "EXIT", to, eh, exit. ^_^; ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (d) Classroom Aw! listen to the cute singing Chao! Here you can leave your Chao to learn different abilities, like playing a musical instrument and dancing. You can leave up to four Chao at a time, but you cannot get your Chao back until it has learned that lesson. If there is an 'X' next to your Chao's name, it is still learning. Try playing a few stages and coming back. If there is a circle, your Chao has learned that ability, and will use it randomly in the garden. If you have several Chao with different abilities, they'll interact with eachother. For example, one Chao will play a trumpet, and another Chao may join in with a tambourine, and maybe yet another Chao will join in with another instrument, and some will begin dancing. Others may sit and watch, and even clap afterwards. ^_^ - Class List These are the different lessons I have seen available. If you have seen any different ones, let me know. :) Instruments: -Trumpet -Tambourine -Bell -Cymbal -Castanet -Maraca -Drums -Flute Dancing: -Shake Dance -Go-Go Dance -Step Dance -Spin Dance Other: -Song -Drawing (my favorite; the Chao will draw things around the garden :) -Exercise ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (e) Bulletin Board Nothing here but a URL to the official website. Here's the exact text: "Messages from kindergarten Sonic and Chao Homepages http://www.sonicteam.com/ sonic2b.html are now available! There is a bulletin board and some tips on how to raise Chao!" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (f) Black Market Here you can buy various items for your Chao, such as fruit, seeds, and even hats with the rings you've collected in the action stages. Rarer items will only appear when you get more emblems, though! - Eggs These are special Chao eggs you can get, and are no different from normal Chao, with the only exception being color. Colored Chao can still be raised to be a Hero, Dark, or any other Chao. :) Egg List (in order by cost): This list may be incomplete, as for now, these are the only ones I've seen. If you can verify any different ones, let me know. :) ___________________________________________________ | Item | Cost | Description | | White Egg | 400 | Typical rare egg. | | Blue Egg | 500 | Typical rare egg. | | Red Egg | 500 | Typical rare egg. | | Yellow Egg | 500 | Typical rare egg. | | Orange Egg | 600 | Typical rare egg. | | Sky Blue Egg | 600 | Typical rare egg. | | Pink Egg | 600 | Typical rare egg. | | Purple Egg | 600 | Typical rare egg. | | Brown Egg | 800 | Typical rare egg. | | Green Egg | 800 | Typical rare egg. | | Grey Egg | 1000 | Typical rare egg. | | Lime Green Egg | 1500 | Typical rare egg. | | Black Egg | 2000 | Typical rare egg. | | Shiny White Egg | 4000 | Moderate rare egg. | | Shiny Blue Egg | 5000 | Moderate rare egg. | | Shiny Red Egg | 5000 | Moderate rare egg. | | Shiny Yellow Egg | 5000 | Moderate rare egg. | | Shiny Orange Egg | 6000 | Moderate rare egg. | | Shiny Sky Blue Egg | 6000 | Moderate rare egg. | | Shiny Pink Egg | 6000 | Moderate rare egg. | | Shiny Purple Egg | 6000 | Moderate rare egg. | | Shiny Brown Egg | 8000 | Moderate rare egg. | | Shiny Green Egg | 8000 | Moderate rare egg. | | Shiny Grey Egg | 10000 | Moderate rare egg. | | Shiny Lime Green Egg | 15000 | Moderate rare egg. | | Shiny Black Egg | 20000 | Moderate rare egg. | ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ - Fruit You can also buy special fruit from the Black Market. Unlike the fruit readily available from the trees in the gardens, these can boost other stats, as well as other things. :) Fruit Lists (in order by cost) I will have a list of what each fruit improves shortly. For now, though, this will list each fruit, the cost, and description. These may be incomplete, as for now, these are the only ones I've seen. If you can verify any different ones, let me know. :) Special fruit: _______________________________________________________________ | Item | Cost | Description | | Hero fruit | 120 | Hero trait fruit. Helps Chao favor the | | | | Hero side. | | Dark fruit | 120 | Dark trait fruit. Helps Chao favor the | | | | Dark side. | | Chao fruit | 200 | Skills fruit. To plant a seed: First, make sure your Chao has won both the shovel and watering can from the Crab Pool and Stump Valley races. Give the seed to that Chao, and it should walk around looking for a place to plant it. once it does that, you can watch it dig the hole, put the seed in, water it, and dance. After all this, a tree will begin to grow. :) Seed List: This list may be incomplete, as for now, these are the only ones I've seen. If you can verify any different ones, let me know. :) _____________________________________________________________ | Item | Cost | Description | | Tasty seed | 200 | This is a regular tree seed. | | Round seed | 300 | Grows a tree with round fruits. | | Square seed | 300 | Grows a tree with square fruits. | | Triangle seed | 300 | Grows a tree with triangle fruits. | | Dark seed | 400 | Grows a tree with dark fruits. | | Hero seed | 400 | Grows a tree with hero fruits. | | Strong seed | 500 | This is a long life tree seed. | ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ - Hats The Black Market also sells various objects your Chao can wear on it's head. To enable a Chao to do this, it must have had at least one Skeleton Dog given to it. Also, some Chao won't wear one no matter what you try. The hats can make your Chao look very cool, or silly, depending on what you have it wear. ;) Also keep in mind that the only way I know of to remove a hat is to hit your Chao. :( Again, this list may be incomplete, as for now, these are the only ones I've seen. If you can verify any others, let me know. :) The first three are not sold in the Black Market, but can be obtained for free. You can also sell these to the B.M. for a quick 50 rings. _____________________________________________________________ | Item | Cost | Description | | Egg shell | -- | Upper half of a hatched Chao egg; | | | | can be gotten by hatching a Chao. | | Pumpkin | -- | Pumpkin. Can be found in the | | | | garden by digging. | | Skull | -- | Skull. These may take a while to get, as they didn't appear for me until I had around 103 emblems... As with the others, this may not be (and probably right now isn't) complete. Any verification on other items would be helpful. _______________________________________________ | Item | Cost | Description | | Omochao's Theme | 10000 | Omochao menu voice. | | Amy's Theme | 20000 | Amy menu voice. | ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Also, a rumored Maria Theme. I will not be adding that officially until I can verify it myself, or am sent visual proof that it exists. - Selling Items There's another way to get rings for the things you want to buy, and that's selling items found in the garden. Egg shells are gotten once a Chao of the specified color is hatched. Items like the Pumpkin and Skull are found by digging in the garden with either Knuckles or Rouge. Below is a list of things you can sell, along with the amount of rings you can get from it: ________________________________ | Item | Rings | | Fruit | 10 | | Pumpkin | 50 | | Skull | 50 | | Egg Shell (Normal) | 50 | | Triangle Seed | 80 | | Egg Shell (Silver) | 110 | | Egg Shell (Blue) | 150 | | Egg Shell (Aquamarine) | 3200 | | Egg Shell (Onyx) | 6000 | ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Obviously incomplete, as I haven't gotten a chance to test other egg colors and items as of yet. ============================================================================= [6] - Chao Stadium ============================================================================= See that cave under the waterfall in the normal garden? That's the entrance to the Chao Stadium, where your Chao can compete against other Chao to win medals, gems, toys, and even emblems :) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (a) Racing Contrary to the name, Chao racing does not only rely on your Chao's speed, but also all of it's other abilities, even luck and intelligence. - Course/Prize List Beginner Races: _______________________________________________________ | Race | Prize | Description | | Crab Pool | Shovel | Compete in swimming. | | Stump Valley | Watering Can | Compete in flying. | | Mushroom Forest | Rattle | Compete in running. | | Block Canyon | Toy Car | Compete in strength. | ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Once you've completed all of those, you unlock... Jewel Races: _____________________________________________________________ | Race | Prize | Description | | Aquamarine | Sonic Doll | Key to winning is swimmimg. | | Topaz | Broom | Key to winning is flying. | | Peridot | Picture Book | Key to winning is running. | | Garnet | Pogo Stick | Key to winning is strength. | | Onyx | Crayons | Key to winning is intelligence. | | Diamond | Bubbles | Chao must be good in all stats | | | | to win. | ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Challenge Races: Unlike the toys won in the Beginner and Jewel races, these stay in the garden at all times. Toys listed here stay in the normal garden. You get a prize when each row of races is completed. Row 1 races: Gold & Silver Chao Chacron Returns! Omochao race Small Animals Prize for completing row 1 is a ball. Sometimes if you throw it, your Chao will chase after it. :) Row 2 races: Cockroach Chao Walking Eggs! Skull Chao Pumpkin Chao Prize for completing row 2 is a jack-in-the-box, much like the ones seen in the races. Row 3 races: Ghost Chao Chacron's Back! Jewel Chao Light Chaos Chao Prize for completing row 3 is a television for your Chao. ^_^ Hero Races: Much like the Challenge races, you'll recieve a prize that remains in the garden. This time, there are only four races, and you'll get a prize after completing the second and last races. The prizes listed here go to the Hero garden. 2nd Race: Ball Last Race: Rocking Horse Dark Races: Much like the Challenge races, you'll recieve a prize that remains in the garden. This time, there are only four races, and you'll get a prize after completing the second and last races. The prizes listed here go to the Dark garden. 2nd Race: Ball Last Race: Radio ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (b) Chao Karate Here you can have your Chao fight against other Chao. The rules are simple: The first Chao to either lose all of it's stamina or fall off the stage loses. In the case of time running out, the Chao with the most stamina remaining wins. Each statistic has a new meaning in Chao karate: Defemse is determined by your Chao's swim stat. Stealth is determined by the fly stat. Speed is determined by it's run stat. Power is about the only one that remains the same. :P Finally, it's health is determined by stamina. At the bottom of the screen there is a small meter with hearts on it. When this starts getting low, your Chao will become discouraged and will sit down, and possibly sleep. During this time, hit the 'A' button as quickly as you can to recharge the meter and get your Chao back into the fight! Your Chao is very vulnerable to attack when discouraged, so be careful! There are three Karate competitions to start: Beginner, Standard, and Expert. The Super level becomes available when all three of those have been completed. The prize for completing each one is an emblem, and an improved rank for your Chao's karate record. :) ============================================================================= [7] - Chao Transporter ============================================================================= This is where the Game Boy Advance linking capabilities come in. :) To access the Chao transporter, look for a machine in the garden with a large GBA on it, and step on the big red button. You'll be taken to a menu with several options: - Drop off: You can transport your Chao to your GBA. To do so, you must be holding your Chao when you hit the button. Select this, and you'll see a screen showing if a GBA is connected to your Game Cube. Make sure the power to your GBA is turned on, and it should appear on the screen. Select it, and your Chao will be transported to the Tiny Garden. Note that a Sonic Advance cartridge is not required for this, but is needed/recommended if you want to take your Chao with you, as you cannot save any changes made to the Chao in the Tiny Garden otherwise. More on the Tiny Garden later. - Pick up: Pick up Chao, items, and even rings collected from the Tiny Garden. Simply select what you want out, and select "Pick up". ^_^ - Move: Allows you to move a Chao to a different memory card. - Good-bye: Send your Chao to live the rest of it's life in a far away forest. Once you do this, you'll never see it again, and there is no way of getting it back. :( - Quit: Exits the Transporter. ============================================================================= [7] - Tiny Garden ============================================================================= If you have a Game Boy Advance, and the GBA to GC link cable, you can raise your Chao there. There are some advantages in doing this, such as the types of fruit you can get, some which aren't normally available through the Black Market. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (a) Item Shop To access the store, press the 'L' button. To buy an item, put the cursor over it and press 'A'. - Fruit: Alter statistics. Some fruit have different effects on certain stats. Fruit List (in order of appearance): I know these fruit have actual names, I just can't remember them from the DC version/Chao Adventure 2. If anyone can find out the names of these, please let me know! ____________________________________________________________________ | Item | Cost | Mood | Belly | Swm | Fly | Run | Pow | Sta | | Round Orange | 30 | +1 | +2 | +3 | -2 | -2 | +3 | +1 | | Blue fruit | 60 | -- | +1 | +2 | +5 | -1 | -1 | +3 | | Pink fruit | 55 | +2 | +2 | +4 | -3 | +4 | -3 | +2 | | Green fruit | 50 | -1 | +1 | -- | -1 | +3 | +4 | +2 | | Triangle fruit | 30 | +1 | +2 | -2 | +3 | +3 | -2 | +1 | | Yellow fruit | 55 | +2 | +2 | -3 | +4 | -3 | +4 | +2 | | Square fruit | 70 | -3 | -- | +3 | +1 | +3 | +2 | -5 | ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Thanks to Shadowman22 for some of the stat information. :) - Eggs: Much like the GC Black Market, you can purchase colored Chao eggs. There seem to be eggs you can only get here... Egg List (in order by cost) I've yet to test all of these out to see what each looks like in the GC gardens, again, any help would be great. :) ______________________ | Egg color | Cost | | Normal | 0 | | Silver | 500 | | Gold | 1000 | | Ruby | 5000 | | Sapphire | 7000 | | Amethyst | 8000 | | Emerald | 10000 | | Garnet | 12000 | | Aquamarine | 14000 | | Peridot | 16000 | | Topaz | 18000 | | Onyx | 20000 | ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ - Toys: There are several toys you can eventually buy for the Tiny Garden for your Chao. Trumpet: Hand it to your Chao, and it will play the trumpet. You may notice it getting better at it, too. Costs 1000 rings. Duck: A big toy duck that floats in the pond. Chao may be able to ride it... Costs 2000 rings. Television: A T.V. for the Tiny Garden. Costs 8000 rings. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- (b) Mini Games One way to earn rings (and the only way if you don't have a Sonic Advance cart) for the Tiny Garden is to play one of the two mini games. - Janken A version of Janken (or rock, paper, scissors), you must eliminate the rotating symbols on the board with it's superior (rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, paper beats rock) by sending the selected symbol upward, aiming for the desired block. There is a time limit, and if the board is cleared, more will appear, and 10 seconds will be added to the remaining time. - Card Match Simply try to memorize the cards' locations, and match them. The Chao'll walk around the board a bit, sometimes moving a few cards with it. Be careful! ============================================================================= [9] - Frequent Questions ============================================================================= This section is to answer the questions about Chao that seem to be asked most often. Most answers, however, will refer you to another section of the guide. Here they are: - Q: How do I pronounce "Chao"? A: Chao is said like the word "chow". Also, it's plural form remains the same, i.e.: "I have five Chao." - Q: How do I name my Chao? A: Take it to the Fortune-Telling House (which, incidentally, does not tell fortunes :P). See section 5-a: Fortune-Telling House for more information. - Q: How can I plant the seeds? A: To plant a seed: First, make sure your Chao has won both the shovel and watering can from the Crab Pool and Stump Valley races. Give the seed to that Chao, and it should walk around looking for a place to plant it. once it does that, you can watch it dig the hole, put the seed in, water it, and dance. After all this, a tree will begin to grow. :) - Q: My Chao lost it's legs! How can I get them back? A: The loss of legs on a Chao (making it a "Ghost Chao") is caused by giving it a bat. To get them back, give your Chao a few Skeleton Dogs until they come back. Any other animal that randomly alters legs will work, as well. - Q: How do I get a [Chaos/Devil/Angel] Chao? A: See section 4-d: Special Chao. - Q: Where can I find (animal)? A: I will hopefully get more of this information up soon, but for those of you looking for Skeleton Dogs, try Pumpkin Hill. For Sea Creatures, try the third Chao Box in the same level. :) Look in section 3 for at least one location walkthrough for each type of animal. - Q: What's a good way to collect rings for the Black Market? A: The generally-accepted best way is to play through City Escape, Mission 3 ("Find the lost Chao!"). Only, skip picking up the Chao and proceed to the end of the level, where the "Back" ring is. Hit this, and you'll be sent to the start of the level, with the rings reset, and whatever amount you had still there. Repeat this until you've collected the desired amount (maximum is 999), then pick up the lost Chao to end the level and add a good sum of rings to your total. There's also a cheat of sorts, for those of you with minimal patience: Buy an item from the Black Market, put it in one of the gardens, and Save & Exit. Reenter the garden, get your item, and take it back to the Black Market. Sell it, and reset the game when you return to the main kindergarten. Go back to the garden, and the item should still be there, and any rings gained from selling it the previous time should still be in your total. Repeat this until you get the amount of rings you want. ^^ - Q: What's "Chao Adventure 2", and how do I get it? A: Chao Adventure 2 was a mini-game on the Dreamcast version of Sonic Adventure 2, accessed through the VMU. It was a simple game of your Chao walking around various places, set on various quests (i.e.: collecting items for Omochao, taking pictures, going to the dentist), and if successful, you'd aquire a seed. This was the only way to get the various fruit and such in the game besides the normal garden fruit, and was quite boring, with the exeption of some of the bizarre things your Chao would say; Mine once declared that it found Eggman's flea powder (!?), then proceeded to eat it. o.O; In short, you're not missing much. :P ============================================================================= [9] - What's to Come ============================================================================= Things I'll be adding very soon: - Completion of the evolution section - Chao Box information and locations - More animal locations ============================================================================= [10] - Credits ============================================================================= Thanks to: Matt Gugliemi - correct Tiny Garden egg names Steve Lucifuge - info on the Amy menu theme TallgeeseIIII - info on two more eggs: Shiny pink, and Shiny purple Billy - Selling price on the Aquamarine egg shell Chris Nochez - Told me of the Castanets Kindergarten class, as well as a quick way to collect dragons (will be added soon, along with good ways to get other legendary/special animals). Game FAQs for hosting this. ;) Note: I only credit the first to provide certain information, and only with info I decide to use within the guide. ============================================================================= [11] - Legal Notice ============================================================================= This guide is copyright 2002 Stacy Anne Christiansen You may not reproduce this document in any form, place it on a website or CD, nor can you alter, profit from, or claim this guide as your own.
