Mario Tennis for the N64 was rather good, but I think Mario Power Tennis is a great new game to play. You can perform the brand new Power Shots to try to stop your opponents silly. In this FAQ, I'll explain all the things I've found in this game. Don't start complaining to me if you got problems. Find out more on the 'E-Mail Policy' topic. Let's get started shall we? ======================================================================== 2: E-Mail Policy If you're going to e-mail me, you must follow these guidelines. 1. I won't accept information that I already have on this FAQ. If you're going to waste my time and e-mail me, it must not be in this FAQ. I HATE answering questions I've already answered. Before e-mailing me, read the whole FAQ. If you don't see what you want, then e-mail me. Be careful though, because sometimes, I'll update this FAQ and the e-mails you send me might be useless to me by then. 2. Subject The e-mails you send me MUST be on this game. If your e-mail doesn't do anything with this game, then I'll just get rid of it. If I receive an e-mail from you, I'll write you back. If I don't receive your e-mail, then I won't write back. It's as simple as that. 3. Credit If you find anything that I never found, please e-mail me. I'll add it to my FAQ. However, don't write anything that I find first, I'll just remove it. If you do find anything (tips, tricks, etc.), please e-mail me. Follow these guidelines and everything will be okay. Thanks for your cooperation. E-Mail me at TPitch@twcny.rr.com. ======================================================================== 3: Basics Before you can get started on this game, you need to know how to play. Smash Shot: Strong shots that move at a straight line. Lunge: A move players perform when balls are too far to hit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3.2.1: Control Options ************************************************************************ Easy Setting Hit Power Shot...............Auto Select Power Shot............Auto Lunge........................Auto ************************************************************************ Normal Setting Hit Power Shot...............Manual Select Power Shot............Auto Lunge........................Auto ************************************************************************ Technical Setting Hit Power Shot...............Manual Select Power Shot............Manual Lunge........................Manual ************************************************************************ You'll automatically activate your power shot when it's fully charged if the control settings are set to Easy. If the control settings are set to Easy or Normal, Offensive Power Shots automatically become Defensive Power Shots if the ball is too far to hit for the player. Players automatically Lunge for balls that are slightly out of reach if the control settings are set to Easy or Normal. If the control settings are set to Technical, you must perform Power Shots and Lunges manually. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3.3: Characters ************************************************************************ Mario Type: All-Around Offensive Power Shot: Mario strikes the ball very hard with a hammer. Opponents who hit the ball will get knocked back a long distance. Defensive Power Shot: Mario spins rapidly to the ball to hit it. My Rating: 3/5. Basically, Mario's average rated. He does have good strengths, but he is lacking in some key elements. Nevertheless, he's still a good character. ************************************************************************ Luigi Type: All-Around Offensive Power Shot: Luigi strikes the ball with a mallet similar to the one in Mario Party 4. Opponents will have their controls reversed if they hit the ball. Defensive Power Shot: Luigi uses the Poltergust 3000 to bring the ball back into play. My Rating: 3/5. Just like Mario, Luigi is also lacking in some key elements. Fortunately, Luigi has a good reach, making him a prime defensive character. ************************************************************************ Peach Type: Technique Offensive Power Shot: Peach ends up striking the ball while spinning. Opponents will end up running to the net if they hit the ball. Defensive Power Shot: Peach does a kiss to bring the ball back to her, and then she hits the ball with high trajectory. My Rating: 4/5. Peach can be a tough character to beat if you're not careful. She has a great technique rating, and her Offensive Power Shot has a distracting curve. She's good for beginners and experts. ************************************************************************ Daisy Type: Technique Offensive Power Shot: Daisy turns her racket into a huge flower and then strikes the ball. Opponents will end up running to the net if they hit the ball. Defensive Power Shot: Daisy dives for the ball from a long distance. My Rating: 3/5. Daisy is not as good as Peach. She's not too good at the defensive position, but she does good with her technique, and her Offensive Power Shot can really cause trouble to those that don't see it right away. ************************************************************************ Yoshi Type: Speed Offensive Power Shot: Yoshi flutters as he hits the ball. Opponents will slow down if they hit the ball. Defensive Power Shot: Yoshi turns into an egg and rolls to hit the ball. He also changes color during the process. My Rating: 4/5. Yoshi's quick on his foot work, and I like his ability to change colors. Of course, color change doesn't affect Yoshi's abilities. Anyway, Yoshi has a good balance, and he has many distinct advantages that make him good. ************************************************************************ Koopa Troopa Type: Speed Offensive Power Shot: Koopa transforms the ball into a bubble and performs a super drop shot that can really disturb opponents. Opponents will slow down if they hit the ball, and the ball can easily go out if you hit it too hard. Defensive Power Shot: Koopa curls into his shell and spins to hit the ball. My Rating: 4/5. Koopa can be a threat if you don't watch him. His Offensive Power Shot is very annoying near the net, because it can cause a lot of pain to those that aren't near it. Koopa is pretty much like Yoshi, but he does have a poor reach. ************************************************************************ Donkey Kong Type: Power Offensive Power Shot: Donkey Kong goes into a barrel cannon and fires out to strike the ball hard. Opponents who hit the ball will get knocked back a long distance. Defensive Power Shot: Donkey Kong turns his racket into a banana-like boomerang and throws it to hit the ball. My Rating: 4/5. Donkey Kong's a strong character, despite of his slow speed. I even like to knock my foes off guard with his tricks. He's powerful and shouldn't be misjudged, and he has a good reach as well. ************************************************************************ Diddy Kong Type: Speed Offensive Power Shot: Diddy sets up his aim to hit the ball in a banana-shaped path. Opponents are temporarily stunned if they hit the ball. Defensive Power Shot: Diddy puts on his rocket pack and flys for the ball. My Rating: 3/5. Diddy is mostly average rated, because he doesn't have as mush potential as most other characters. He does have some strong points fortunately, but not quite good enough. ************************************************************************ Wario Type: Power Offensive Power Shot: Wario puts on the object he got from Bowser and strikes the ball hard. Opponents will become electrified temporarily if they hit the ball. Defensive Power Shot: Wario uses a device that extends far enough to hit the ball back into play. My Rating: 2/5. Wario isn't too good. He's slow and his moves just aren't cutting it for him. Don't bother with him unless you're an expert with this game. ************************************************************************ Waluigi Type: Defense Offensive Power Shot: Waluigi spins like a cyclone and hits the ball. Opponents will become dizzy if they hit the ball. Defensive Power Shot: Waluigi swims to the ball and returns it. My Rating: 2/5. Waluigi is rather slow. He isn't that great, but his good reach for balls can really cause problems for players. He's mostly a defensive character, but his size does make it easy for balls to hit his nose. Unless you're real good with this game, leave Waluigi alone. ************************************************************************ Bowser Type: Power Offensive Power Shot: Bowser breathes fire at the ball and strikes it. Opponents who hit the ball will get knocked back a long distance. Defensive Power Shot: Bowser curls into his shell and spins to hit the ball. My Rating: 3/5. Even though he's slow, Bowser packs quite a punch at times. He seems to be more of an average character at my case. ************************************************************************ Bowser Jr. Type: Tricky Offensive Power Shot: Bowser Jr. surrounds the ball with paint and splits the paint balls to make 3 of them. Opponents will slow down if they hit the ball. Defensive Power Shot: Bowser Jr. runs to the ball to hit it with his brush. My Rating: 3/5. Bowser Jr. does play a mean game when it comes to trickery, but his moves are countered rather easily. Probably not your best choice if you want to use a good tricky player. ************************************************************************ Boo Type: Tricky Offensive Power Shot: Boo creates a racket made by smaller boos and strikes the ball hard. Opponents will have their controls reversed if they hit the ball. Defensive Power Shot: Boo summons other boos to hit the ball for him. My Rating: 4/5. Boo is pretty tricky to handle at first, but he's a deadly weapon if used by an expert. His Lunge is tough to use, but it does hit lobs. Boo's Offensive Power Shot is absurdly distracting as well, so keep your eyes on the ball. You need patience with Boo, but it'll be worth it. ************************************************************************ Shy Guy Type: Technique Offensive Power Shot: Shy Guy electrifies the ball and strikes it with high trajectory. Opponents will become electrified temporarily if they hit the ball. Defensive Power Shot: Shy Guy uses his long range racket to hit the ball. My Rating: 3/5. Shy Guy really isn't a good character to use. Fortunately, he's average rated, thanks to his technique. He does have some good uses, but he isn't the best to use at a defensive position. ************************************************************************ Fly Guy Type: Tricky Offensive Power Shot: Fly Guy creates a cyclone and strikes the ball. Opponents will become dizzy if they hit the ball. Defensive Power Shot: Fly Guy creates a twister to bring the ball back to him. My Rating: 4/5. Fly Guy's a tricky player to face. He can cause mayhem each time he makes strong hooks with the ball. He's not meant for beginners, but experts can really have a crazy time using Fly Guy. ************************************************************************ Paratroopa Type: Technique Offensive Power Shot: Paratroopa strikes the ball with high trajectory. Opponents will become dizzy if they hit the ball. Defensive Power Shot: Paratroopa drops to the ground to hit the ball. Sometimes, he can get stuck in the ground after using this move. My Rating: 5/5. In many ways, Paratroopa is the best character. He's fast, and has the best Lunge in the game. He unfortunately has a poor reach, but that disadvantage wouldn't matter as long as his Lunge works. Paratroopa's a mighty good character, so you should try using him. ************************************************************************ Wiggler Type: Defense Offensive Power Shot: Wiggler turns red and strikes the ball hard. Opponents will become dizzy if they hit the ball. Defensive Power Shot: Wiggler transforms into a butterfly to hit the ball. My Rating: 3/5. Wiggler does good when playing the net. Of course, Wiggler's average rated since he does have some problems. He moves slow, and his hits are rather weak. However, Wiggler has an excellent reach, and can be a great defensive player. ************************************************************************ Petey Piranha Type: Power Offensive Power Shot: Petey Piranha fills his racket with sludge and hits the ball. Opponents will slow down if they hit the ball. Defensive Power Shot: Petey Piranha releases a piranha plant to hit the ball back for him. My Rating: 1/5. Petey Piranha really isn't a good character to use if you're a beginner. His head is so big that balls can easily hit him in the face. Fortunately, Petey Piranha is very powerful and has an excellent reach, but he's not a good defensive player. Petey Piranha is only meant for experts, so don't bother with him until then. ======================================================================== 4: Courts ************************************************************************ Peach Dome Hard Court Ball Speed..........Normal Bounce..............Strong ************************************************************************ Peach Dome Clay Court Ball Speed..........Slow Bounce..............Weak ************************************************************************ Peach Dome Grass Court Ball Speed..........Fast Bounce..............Weak ************************************************************************ Luigi's Mansion Court Ball Speed..........Fast Bounce..............Normal ************************************************************************ Delfino Plaza Court Ball Speed..........Normal Bounce..............Weak ************************************************************************ Wario Factory Court Ball Speed..........Fast Bounce..............Strongest ************************************************************************ Gooper Blooper Court Ball Speed..........Fastest Bounce..............Normal ************************************************************************ DK Jungle Court Ball Speed..........Slow Bounce..............Normal ************************************************************************ Bowser Castle Court Ball Speed..........Fast Bounce..............Strong ************************************************************************ Mario Classic Court Ball Speed..........Slow Bounce..............Strongest ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4.1: Gimmick Courts ************************************************************************ Luigi's Mansion Court Ghosts will end up surrounding the court. They'll slow you down and cause trouble once they throw bananas on the court. Aim the ball at the light bulb pad to clear them out temporarily. ************************************************************************ Delfino Plaza Court Piranha Plants will spread sludge around the court to slow you down. Step on the FLUDD pads to spray the sludge out of your side of the court and make the ball land on the Piranha Plant pads to spray sludge on your opponent's side of the court. ************************************************************************ Wario Factory Court The conveyor belts will start moving once the ball hits the arrows above the net. Use them to your advantage on your opponent, but be careful that you don't speed up the belts on your side. ************************************************************************ Gooper Blooper Court The areas of the court will move if the ball hits the arrows. The shape of the court changes each time you move the platforms. The ball is considered out-of-bounds if it hits the water though. ************************************************************************ DK Jungle Court Klaptraps can be a pain when they bite you, because they'll slow down your speed. Use them against your opponents and aim the ball at the lightning pad to get rid of the Klaptraps on your side of the court. ************************************************************************ Bowser Castle Court This court tilts a lot, so you need to be careful about where the ball lands here. ************************************************************************ Mario Classic Court Koopas, Crabs, Fighter flys, and Freezies are the main problem here. You must aim the ball at the POW block above the net to get rid of them. You'll lose your footing if you make contact on either of those enemies. Freezies can cause your side of the court to become frozen for 1 game if you don't stop them in time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4.2: Ring Shot You must aim the ball through the rings to earn ring points. The smaller the ring, the more ring points you'll earn. Score and you'll earn all the ring points you got, and half of your opponent's ring points will be given to you for the next serve. You can play a 100, 200, or 500 ring point match. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4.3: Item Battle Item Battles are pretty chaotic and can really spice the game up. This section will explain about the items and their frequency appearances in the courts. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4.3.1: Items ************************************************************************ Green Koopa Shell You'll throw 3 shells that'll move at a straight line. Players will stumble if they get hit by one. ************************************************************************ Red Koopa Shell This shell comes after your opponent. Players will stumble if they get hit by one. ************************************************************************ Mushroom This item increases your speed temporarily. ************************************************************************ Banana You'll lose your footing if you slip on these things. They'll land where the ball lands. ************************************************************************ Star Increases your abilities and makes you invincible temporarily. ************************************************************************ Lightning This item shrinks all of your opponents and reduces their power temporarily. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4.3.2: Item Battle Courts ************************************************************************ Peach Dome Hard Court Default settings. ************************************************************************ Peach Dome Clay Court Default settings. ************************************************************************ Peach Dome Grass Court Default settings. ************************************************************************ Luigi's Mansion Court Lightning appears at a high frequency. ************************************************************************ Delfino Plaza Court Mushrooms appear at a high frequency. ************************************************************************ Wario Factory Court Item Boxes appear above the net at a high frequency. ************************************************************************ Gooper Blooper Court Green Koopa Shells and Red Koopa Shells appear at a high frequency. ************************************************************************ DK Jungle Court Bananas appear at a high frequency. ************************************************************************ Bowser Castle Court This court tilts a lot.
