Mario Power Tennis [MPT] If you're reading this, then I assume either you have the game and are curious, you don't have the game and are extremely curious, or you're just bored and looking for something to read. Doesn't matter much. Hopefully, though, you know about this game. Mario Power Tennis is, as you might infer, another installment in the Mario Tennis series, developed by Camelot. The fourth, to be precise. The first one was Mario's Tennis for the Virtual Boy, which you might not have even heard about. It was Nintendo's first "3D" console, though calling it a "console" is an iffy proposition. I myself have not had the chance to play Mario's Tennis (Or any VB game for that matter), but I hear it was less than impressive. The second installment was the first recognized Mario Tennis game, and it was called that - Mario Tennis. This N64 game was what really dragged me into the Mario Tennis series, and led me to purchase the third Mario Tennis game, which is also named "Mario Tennis" for what reason I have no idea. This one, on the GameBoy Color, was less focused on Mario and more on a "storyline" of sorts in which you played as a student in the Royal Tennis Academy striving to be the best tennis player ever (lol cliche). I didn't like this one very much, partly because the story mode sucked, partly because you had to hook up your cartridge to the N64 Mario Tennis using the Transfer Pak to unlock most of the characters, including Yoshi which was the WORST move in Mario sports game history. I do hope Camelot doesn't pull any junk like that anymore, though if it is indeed in Mario Tennis Power Tour, the most recent installment, I won't have to worry because I have a GBA-GCN cable (Thank you Four Swords Adventures). The big new thing in this game is the reason the word "Power" is in the title: Power Shots. During play, after charging up energy for a while, you will be able to execute a Power Shot, which will hit the ball with a lot (Or barely any in a few cases) of oomph, or somehow hit the ball from far away. But you probably knew that already. So let's cut the talk and get to the FAQ. Normal Courts [CTS] Normal Courts are simple courts with no funny business. Just hit the ball back and forth, plain and simple. The courts themselves have two ratings: Ball Speed and Bounce. The higher the Ball Speed rating, the faster the ball will travel. Bounce determines how high the ball bounces off the ground. There are ten (10) courts in all, two of which must be unlocked. Peach Dome [PED] Welcome to Peach Dome, presented by Her Royal Highness, Princess Peach (Or "Princess Prick" as I like to call her). The three courts here are used in the World Open and Star Tournament, and are ideal for first-timers, as they have no excessively high stats. A large audience waits here, cheering for the players. Toadsworth, Peach's stewart, plays the role of umpire. After a few consecutive matches here, time will pass, shadows will grow long as the sun sets, and artifical lighting will take over. As you play on the Grass Court, the grass will wear out revealing plain dirt, though it doesn't seem to affect the stats of the court. Peach Dome Court [PDC] -Ball Speed: Normal -Bounce: Strong Peach Dome Clay Court [PDL] -Ball Speed: Slow -Bounce: Weak Peach Dome Grass Court [PDG] -Ball Speed: Fast -Bounce: Weak Luigi's Mansion Court You may remember the large, dimly-lit building behind this court from Luigi's Mansion. You may also recognize the ghosts who serve as linesmen from said game. Blue flames are the only source of light, and all but two windows in the mansion are dark. Toadsworth sits on a tiny platform suspended by a stiff worn-out rope. -Ball Speed: Fast -Bounce: Normal Delfino Plaza Court Circling seagulls, a calm ocean, and bright sinlight are the trademarks of this rainbow-hued court on idyllic Isle Delfino. A large Pianta statue watches the match along with a small crowd of Piantas who were generous enough to take the roles of linesmen. Far behind the court, Corona Mountain steams away silently, and in the foreground, houses, shops, bell towers, and a pipe clogged with a large pineapple stand tall. Ball Speed: Normal Bounce: Weak Wario Factory Court Gears crank, steam erupts from vents, and Bob-Ombs toil away at the lines in the production room of Wario Ware Inc. A large animated Wario poster watches with both eyes pointing in different directions. Harsh incandescent lights illuminate the lattice court, beneath which distracting gears whirl on endlessly. Toadsworth calls the points from his spot in a crane bucket. Ball Speed: Fast Bounce: Strongest Gooper Blooper Court In the midst of a construction site which has been there since as long as anyone can recall, a single platform looms, atop which sit Blooper linesmen, crates of rackets, and a glass tennis court. Toadsworth, safe from the squids, rests suspended from above in a crane climbing section (I bet you don't even know what that's used for). Cheep-Cheeps swim below, evidently hungry enough to gorge themselves on any tennis balls unlucky enough to fall off. If anyone's watching the match, they're too far away to see, on the mainland. Ball Speed: Fastest Bounce: Normal Donkey Kong Jungle Court Deep within a humid rainforest, perched precariously over a river, lies a wooden court which, controversially, has Kremlings manning the lines. Damp with mist from a nearby waterfall tumbling down from the heights of a giant tree (How the flip do you get a waterfall in a tree? oO; ), this place is a popular hangout for Ukikis, who are often seen riding along in minecarts filled with bananas. Ball Speed: Slow Bounce: Normal Bowser Castle Court If you can't beat 'em, heat 'em. In Bowser's Castle, it's all about the fire. The course itself is kept safe from a fiery demise by only two chains. Mecha Bowser has turned out to watch the fight, and Magikoopas and Mechakoopas have taken their places as linesmen. Can you take the temperature? Unlocked by clearing the Fire Cup of Gimmick Masters in doubles. Ball Speed: Fast Bounce: Strong Mario Classic Court If you've ever played Mario Bros. Arcade, you've already seen this court. It's 8-bit madness as Shellcreepers and Sidesteppers dart across platforms on the ends of the court (No Fighterflies, unfortunately 8( ). A retooled Mario Bros. emblem flashes over the court, and Toadsworth is mounted on the famous recovery platform. It's time to kick some serious retro tail. Unlocked by clearing the Thunder Cup of Gimmick Masters in doubles. Ball Speed: Slow Bounce: Strongest Gimmick Courts [CTG] Tired of real tennis? Power Shots not enough to satisfy your need for insanity? Have no fear, Gimmick Courts are here! Each Gimmick Court has some odd way of making Mario Power Tennis more hectic then it already is, from supernatural interference to moving floors and out-of-control court lines. If you can't keep your eye on the ball easily, flee from these madhouses. These courts have the same stats as their Normal Court counterparts, so all you have to worry about is sludge, tilting courts, and the like. Note that you initially can't play Gimmick Courts in Exhibition; To unlock the ability to do so, play on that court in Gimmick Masters. Luigi's Mansion Gimmick Court [LMG] Those darn ghosts just can't restrain themselves. They're such big tennis fans that they actually come out onto the court and grab players! Note the glowing squares on the court. If a ball hits one, it will spawn a ghost. Different ghosts do different things, but it's narrowed down to two things: Grabbing and banana-throwing. If a ghost grabs you, it will slow you down. Spin the Control Stick to shake it off quickly. If you hit a banana peel, you will trip over, and you can't hit when youre stumbling. To clear your court of ghosts, hit the ball onto the light bulb icon on your opponent's court. Delfino Plaza Gimmick Court [DPG] Unlike the Luigi's Mansion ghosts, the Piranha Plants who have rooted themselves beside the court hate it, and take much glee in spraying the court with brown, slippery goop. Hit a ball onto the circles on your opponent's court to commence sludge attack. The pollution will decrease your traction, making it difficult to reach far-away balls. If you find yourself in a sticky situation, stand on the nozzle icons and F.L.U.D.D. water nozzles will clean up after the carnivorous flowers. Wario Factory Gimmick Court Wario has put all that cranking machinery to good use, although it rather depends on your definition of "good." The floor is now rigged with conveyor belts, and the speed up/slow down controls are attached to the net. Each court has two belts: One near the net which moves vertically, and one at the back which moves horizontally. Note the color of the lines on your court. The switches on the net are color-coded to show which areas of the court they control. Left/Right switches move the horizontal part of the court, and the up/down arrows shift the vertical section. The more a switch is hit, the faster the belts move. Keep your opponents on their feet! Gooper Blooper Gimmick Court You'll find yourself cursing the time you hit that panel a few minutes ago on multiple occasions here. The court lines move, creating zones where the ball really shouldn't be (If you're the one hitting it). Hit an arrow, and the panels move in that direction, covering up (Or revealing more of) the glass floor. If a ball touches the glass, it's counted as Out. Be careful when hitting the ball, because that spot you shot to last time might not be there anymore. Donkey Kong Jungle Gimmick Court [DJG] Hope your opponent lobs a lot. If they don't, then your leg is in danger. Klaptraps traverse the net here, and they're not too well balanced; One ball to the side and they're off. They don't enjoy it; They hate it so much, in fact, that they just have to bite someone and hold on (Ouch). A Klaptrap on the ankle decreases your speed, making shots difficult to reach. And for the sake of preserving your image, don't try to lunge. There's no limit to how many Klaptraps can attach themseles to you (Pain). Clear them off by hitting the lightning bolt icon on your opponent's court (Much better). Bowser Castle Gimmick Court [BCG] Last time, the court was balanced enough to stay upright on just those two rusty chains. Now, though, it's more dangerous as the court imitates Yoshi Topsy-Turvy! As the players stumble about on the precariously-tilted court, it shifts even more, sending the ball bouncing at extreme angles. Best be quick on yourfeet or the court itself will pull the balls away from you. On a side note, the court isn't affected by Boo, Paratroopa, and Fly Guy. Mario Classic Gimmick Court [MCG] Someone fix that plumbing! Those Sidesteppers and Shellcreepers are now unconfined to the platforms in the background, and wander freely across the court. Hit one, and you'll be unable to move for a few moments. Floating over the net is none other than the good old POW Block, and it does just what it used to. Hit it to flip enemies over; Touch a flipped enemy and it will become energy for your Power Shots. Incidentally, there are Fighterflies in the background now. ^_^ Item Battle [IBT] Mario Tennis meets Mario Kart. Power SHots screwed with your opponents before. Now they have to deal with an array of Items! The net is now lined with rainbow-hued Item Boxes; Hit one and it will move over to your character and begin flashing various items. When the roulette stops, you can use the displayed Item. Items are automatically used the first time you hit the ball after acquiring an Item. Try to hit the right Item Box to make it harder for your foes to get an Item! Items [ITM] Red Shell - If you like Mario sports titles, then it's obvious you've played at least one Mario Kart game, which means you already know what this does. Toss it and it will home in on your enemy. If you're playing Doubles, it will pick theclosest one. Green Shells - Send three Koopa shells spinning ahead. Be careful: If you're playing Doubles, it can hit your partner as well. Unlike the Red Shell, these home, but three at once is still a force to be reckoned with. Banana Peel - Stick one of these trippy things on your ball and send your enemy a little birthday present. It will stick where it bounces. Be careful, though: If your opponent hits it back before it bounces, it may stick to your court! Lightning Bolt - Is your opponent a hyperactive Speed player or an aggravatingly accurate Technique player? Put a damper on their abilities with this bolt from the blue. This also hits your Doubles partner, though. so be careful. Mushroom - If you're playing as Koopa Troopa now, you'll never want to see another Speed player again. Exponentially increase your speed for an easier game. Star - Is your opponent a gatling gun of Green Shells? Break out this celestial savior and disappoint all who dare throw something at you. It even stops the legendary Lightning Bolt! Can't touch this! Court Effects [CTE] I bet you were wondering why I included an items section when it obviously has nothing to do with the courts. Well, it actually does have something to do with the courts. The court you play on may have a bearing on the items you get. Most courts yield a 10% increase in a certain item's frequency. Some other effects may apply, or none at all. Peach Dome Court - No effect Peach Dome Clay Court - No effect Peach Dome Grass Court - No effect Luigi's Mansion Court - +Lightning Bolts Delfino Plaza Court - +Mushrooms Wario Factory - Twice as many Item Boxes appear over the net Gooper Blooper Court - +Red Shells and Green Shells Donkey Kong Jungle Court - +Bananas Bowser Castle Court - Same as Bowser Castle Gimmick Court Mario Classic Court - +Stars Frequently Asked Questions [FAQ] Q: Why can't I play [Court] in Gimmick Mode?
