Introduction \ \___/ /_________________/ It's likely that if you're reading this, you've either picked up the GameCube demo disk or are going to very soon and want to look ahead at this game. As this is my third FAQ at GameFAQs, I'm still not very experienced but I'm trying my best to make this a good walkthrough/guide. Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg is my second-favorite game on the demo disk (my first is Viewtiful Joe, but someone already made a walkthrough for that, lol). I typically like making demo walkthroughs because they're short and easy to write. So, stick around and I might make demo FAQs for other games on the disk (with Splinter Cell in mind... most people say they hate that demo but that's just because they don't understand any of it). That's pretty much it. Enjoy. _______________________________________________________________________________ _ ____________ / \ / / / \ \ 2. Basics \ \___/ /___________/ This section is written simply to teach you about Billy Hatcher and how to play. I suggest you read this section before you play, but hey, it's up to you. About Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg / \___________________________________________/ As the name suggests, Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg is all about rolling and hatching eggs. As soon as Billy makes contact with an egg, he will begin rolling it. By rolling the egg over fruit, you are able to "feed" the egg, causing it to glow. When the egg icon at the bottom of the screen is blinking, the egg can be hatched. To hatch an egg, you must release it and press the R button. Billy will let out a nice, big cocka-doodle-doo, and the egg can be hatched, revealing whatever is inside. The R button can also be held and "charged," but so far there doesn't seem to be any use for that. Rolling eggs serves many purposes. Eggs that you are rolling can smash crates, wooden fences, rocks, or any other type of obstacle to find. You can also overrun enemies with an egg, instantly killing them. Also, when rolling an egg down a steep hill, Billy will actually sort of lose control of the egg and latch himself onto it. At this point the game becomes reminisent of a Sonic or Super Monkey Ball game. Very fun. Just like normal eggs, the eggs in Billy Hatcher and the giant egg will crack and shatter if they take too much damage. When an egg gets hit by an enemy or fire, it will glow red and cracks will appear. If it gets hit too much it will break. Be careful. Most of the time when you hatch an egg, an animal will come out. Having an animal ally that you can control is one of Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg's biggest features. When an animal is hatched, it will wander around aimlessly until you walk up to it, at which point it will join you and continue to follow you around. You can only have one animal ally at a time -- any others that you've hatched will simply walk around until they've been selected. Animals can be used to attack or perform special abilities. For instance, a hatched penguin can use its water attacks to douse fire. An animal's ability can be used by pressing the X button. In this demo there are only two types of animals: Penguins and seals. Penguins are the only type of animal you'll really be using in this demo. It has the ability of water, so whenever you find fire in this demo, you must use a penguin to put it out. Seals are also available in this demo, but their ability, ice, is useless for now. They move in a zigzag pattern when they attack, and their ice ability can be used to destroy enemies, but it's really much easier to use an unhatched egg. _______________________________________________________________________________ _ _________________ / \ / / / \ \ 3. Walkthrough \ \___/ /________________/ This is probably the part you came for. This section explains how to complete both missions in the game, whether it be the default mission or the secret one. Enjoy or whatever. _________________ / \ / 3.a. Mission One / \_________________/ Just to fill you in on what's going on, you're positioned on Pirate Island. The Elder of the island has been trapped inside a golden egg, and this is preventing the sun from rising. You've got to hatch the golden egg (freeing the Elder) to make the sun rise, and to actually complete the mission you must retrieve the red emblem the Elder gives you. You'll start on a wooden platform high above the sea, the start of a long ramp that leads to the island. After receiving some advice for a voice in the sky, grab the blue swirly egg from the nest, break through the wooden fence, and start rolling down the ramp. And so begins the Super Monkey Ball aspect of Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg. As you roll down the ramp, roll over as much fruit as you can to make the blue egg grow bigger, and press the A button to jump over any gaps you come across during your roll. When you get to the end of the ramp, one of several blue rings will take you to the island. By now, the egg should be ready to hatch (if the egg icon in the bottom-right hand corner of the screen is blinking, it's ready). If it's not, roll it over some of the enemies in the area and collect the fruit they leave behind. When the egg is ready to hatch, release it and press the R button. The egg will break open and out will come a penguin. Get the penguin to join you, then grab one of the two eggs (the purple one contains a seal, and the spotted one contains nothing) and begin feeding it. If you can't find fruit, you can get some by destroying the crates, or by pressing the X button in front of the fire (if the penguin has joined you) to douse it, revealing the fruit behind it. When the egg is fully grown, don't hatch it. Instead, take it to the small cage. Use the egg to hit the switch beside the cage. This will open the cage, giving you access to the golden egg inside. Hatch the egg you were holding, and go up to the golden egg. The voice will talk to you again, saying that you must now hatch the golden egg. The voice will open the pirate door, giving you acces to the second part of the level. Grab the golden egg and smash through the wooden fences along the path. At this point you'll have to use the blue rings to transport yourself from island to island, defeating all the enemies you see here. When you get to a much longer platform, jump the gaps, grab the fruit and smash through the fences to land yourself on the second part of the island. By noq, if the egg is not ready to hatch, trample over the enemies and grab all the fruit. When the egg is ready to hatch, press R again to hatch it. The Elder you've been looking for will pop out and make the sun rise. Yay! Now go up to him and press B to talk to him. He'll congratulate you for rescuing him, and he will make an emblem appear on a higher platform. Grab the spotted egg nearby and roll it up the metal grated ramp. You'll find a green ring at the top. With the spotted egg in your hands, jump into the ring. This green ring works the same as the blue rings, except that it will not shoot you until you press the A button. Do so and you'll be launched through a series of blue rings, eventually landing you on the raised platform. Jump to grab the emblem. That's it! You're done. Good job. _________________ / \ / 3.b. Mission Two / \_________________/ You can access Mission Two by holding A on the title screen and pressing the Start button. Now that I've covered that, I'll give you the run-down. This mission takes place in the same stage as before. Changes? First of all, the sun is out, giving the stage a very Banjo-Kazooie atmosphere. Second, you don't have to hatch the golden egg this time -- you just need to get to the emblem, which is in the same place as before. Finally, there are some new obstacles in your way, but not many. This is ultimately not too different from Mission One. From the start, grab the purple swirly egg and get rolling down the ramp. At the bottom, hatch the egg. Out will come a seal, which is nice, but since you aren't required to hatch a seal, just let it wander aimlessly. Instead, pick up the blue swirly egg and feed it fruit. Do so by either smashing the crates or by mowing over the enemies. There are some new enemies this time (including one that can make a whirlwind) so be careful. Hatch the egg, and you'll get yourself a penguin. Now grab the blue spotted egg and take it through the pirate door (which -- oddly -- is open to begin with). Smash through the wooden gates. Up next: A switch surrounded in fire. What do you do? Why, simply press X to launch your belly-flopping penguin buddy into the flames, and he'll extinguish them for you! Now pound the switch (A+A) and head through the door. The rest is exactly like the first mission, except for one difference: The anchors swinging on the pier right in front of the second area. It requires a bit of good timing but it's not hard to get past them. Once you've gotten to the second area, head to the green ring. This one is different -- you have to time it to get the ring to shoot you upwards. To do so, press the A button when the arrow is pointing upwards. This will launch you to the platform where the emblem is. Grab it and you're done. Once again, you're done. That's it. That's the demo. All of it. _______________________________________________________________________________ _ _________ / \ / / / \ \ 4. FAQ \ \___/ /________/ Q: Is Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg fun? A: Though I don't like to answer for the entire game since all that's available is the demo, what I've played is very good. --- Q: When will Billy Hatcher release? A: Sometime in September. --- Q: The only animals available in the demo are the penguin and seal. Will there be more? A: Oh yes, there will be many more. --- Q: Will there be bosses in the final version? A: Yes, there will be bosses. It would be interesting to see what kinds of bosses could be made when you tie in the game's overall concept. --- Q: This demo was rather buggy. Do you think some of the glitches found in this game will be fixed? A: Keep in mind that only 30% of the game was complete when this demo was made, so yes, most will be taken care of. --- Q: This demo wasn't too hard. Does that bother you? A: It's obvious that this is one of the first stages in the game, and we all know Sonic Team isn't afraid to challenge gamers. I'm sure the later levels will be a bit harder. --- Q: Do you think there will be some stages entirely devoted to the Super Monkey Ball-style gameplay you mentioned? It sounded cool! A: That would certainly be a nice touch if Sonic Team were to add this, but it's still too early. --- Q: Is the GameCube demo disk worth buying? A: Yes, for this game and others (Viewtiful Joe, Soul Calibur 2, Splinter Cell). --- That's it. Version History \ \___/ /____________________/ 08/19/03 -- Tuesday Version 1.0 After a while without an update, I added the walkthrough for Mission Two. So don't complain. This should be the final version, but we'll see. 08/05/03 -- Tuesday Version 0.7 I've finished everything except for the walkthrough for the second level. But since that's coming soon anyway, I figured I would send in the FAQ right now. _______________________________________________________________________________ _ _____________ / \ / / / \ \ 6.
