Welcome to my guide for The Smurfs for the original Game Boy. I have always been a huge fan of the Smurfs TV show for some odd reason, so I jumped at the chance to grab the Game Boy game. The game is your typical TV-show tie in. The action is all scrolling, mostly horizontally, but some vertically. You run, you jump, you avoid enemies. Gargamel, the evil dude who likes to eat the Smurfs has already captured three Smurfs, so Papa Smurf sends Hefty Smurf off to rescue them. If you own the re-release of this game, which is denoted by the Nintendo "Player's Choice Million Seller" logo, the game will be enhanced for the Super Game Boy. This means that it will be in color if you play with the Super Game Boy adapter for your Super Nintendo. If you own the original release, you will not have the enhancements. The enhancements are just a nice blue and red color scheme and a black boarder with "THE SMURFS" at the top of the screen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Controls (SMCON) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- A: Jump B: Run Start: Pause ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Walkthrough (SMWLK) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- When you turn on the game, right after the credits screen, you will be presented with an option for different languages. The Smurfs were very popular in Europe, especially in Belgium, so you have a couple of language options to choose from. Just choose the one that you are most comfortable with by pressing A. French and Dutch are the other two options under English if you did not know. ***Update!!!*** I wouldn't be surprised if that was German, not Dutch. I suppose I should check some day. At the title screen, you can select Options and change the difficulty of the game, as well as enter a password and switch the music on and off. For all intents and purposes, this walkthrough is done in Easy mode. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Act 1: The Forest (SMACT1) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Start out by moving right. You will see a little squirrel or chipmunk in the tree above you. He will throw acorns at you periodically. As you move forward, watch out for the acorns and do not let them hit you. Jump on the fungus on the right side of the tree, then jump up to the platform on the right with the star. Touch the star to pick it up and gain 100 points. Now move right and drop back down to the ground, keeping an eye out for the caterpillar. Don't touch it. Move right. You will see a large tree trunk with a full tree immediately after it. There will be another squirrel in the tree. Jump on the leaves and move up and left until you get to the platform with the tiny mushroom on it. Jump on top of the mushroom and it will explode. Inside will be a heart which will add one heart to your health meter. Now drop back to the ground and continue to the right. Watch out for the acorns. You will see a small mushroom on the fungus growing from a tree. Jump on it and it will reveal a leaf. Now jump across the gap and move right until you see another squirrel in a tree. Jump up and you will see a nut bushel. This is what you found in the first mushroom you jumped on. This will give you another heart, if you need it so go ahead and grab it. Continue right. You will come to a gap in the road. There will be a leaf that is falling from the sky that you can jump on to get across the gap. Be careful though because once you are on the leaf, it will fall faster. You can also just jump across the gap without the leaf if you so choose. Continue right. You will see a caterpillar and a mushroom on a level below you. Jump over the caterpillar and move right until you drop down to that level. Now move back left and walk up the small hill and you will have access to that mushroom. Stand in front of it and wait for the caterpillar to move to your right, then jump ever so slightly and you will bash open the mushroom and you will find an extra life! Now move back to the right. If you run and jump off the ground that has the caterpillar, you can easily grab the star. If not, jump on the fungus, avoiding the bee and jump left to grab it. Move right and you will see another squirrel in a tree throwing acorns. You will then come to a very large gap with a leaf floating down. You need to use the leaf to get across, so wait for it to be within range and jump to it. Do not be afraid to let it go if you wait too long. Another leaf will come down from the top of the screen. Move right, past the tree with the squirrel throwing nuts and you will see an incline that you can go up, or you can jump across the gaps and grab a health nut bushel. If you go up, Grumpy Smurf will be running around in a rage and he will hurt you if he touches you. You can easily jump over him if you want. This is the best route to take unless you really need the health on the bottom. Continue right. Keep going, past all the squirrels in trees and caterpillars until you go up a large incline. At the end of the ledge, you will want to watch out for a bee and drop down when it is out of the way. You can jump on top of the bee if you want to and it will kill it. This is a good idea since you will want to jump left and it is tough to do with the bee flying around. Jump left and you will get a leaf and a health nut bushel inside of the mushroom. You can then jump left again and walk up the incline to get back to where you were, rather than trying to jump across the gaps again. Move right and jump across the large gap. You will see a star on a platform with a bee flying around. Avoid the bee and grab the star and move right and you will find the exit to the level. Just walk to the edge of the screen and you will move on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Act 2: The River Smurf (SMACT2) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- This level is quite a bit different than the previous one. Hefty will be on a log floating a river. The screen will scroll automatically and there will be piranhas and gigantic logs that you will need to avoid. This level is very short and does not take that long. You can use the left and right buttons to speed up and slow down Hefty as he floats the river. Immediately move down to the bottom of the screen to avoid the piranha and grab a leaf. After the second log, move down as far as you can go and you will grab an extra life. As you continue right, you will want to avoid all the piranhas and the logs while trying to grab as many of the leaves and nut bushels as you can. You will basically do up and down movements the whole time. At all costs, avoid being pinned behind a log that is on the left side of the screen. If you are, you will die. Go ahead and float through a piranha and lose one heart rather than losing an entire life. If you are getting too close to the right side of the screen, use one of the logs to push you back. Since the screen scrolls automatically, you cannot move backwards. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Act 3: The Bridge (SMACT3) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Move right across the bridge all the way until you see six planks suspended with nothing else under them. They will fall if you stand on them. You will see several birds flying around. You can jump on their backs and ride them around, but they will slowly move towards the water when you are riding them. You will want to jump off and onto either another bird or the logs in the water. Continue moving right, using the birds and the logs. Eventually you will come to a point where there will be only a bird to jump onto. Jump on its back and quickly jump right and you will land on a new bridge. The bridge will fall out from under you for six planks, so move quickly off of it to more stable ground. There will be three leaves on the bridge that you can also grab. Move right and you will see a piranha swimming back and forth under the bridge where the planks are not supported. Run across the planks and you will see a bird that you can jump onto. There will be a star here as well. Move right and use a combination of the birds and the logs. Eventually you will see several single longs spaced evenly apart. Just after these will be two logs together with an extra life on it. Move right and use the bird to get up on the bridge. Move across carefully because the planks under the leaves are weak and will fall out from under you. Move right and you will go past a tree with a squirrel in it and then you will be at the end of the act. Walk to the edge of the screen to move on to act 4. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Act 4: The Swamps (SMACT4) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- You will see an alligator (or crocodile?) in the water in front of you. You will have to jump on his head to move across the water. He will periodically disappear underwater, so wait for him to do so then jump on his head the instant he comes back up. Jump right and you will grab a hold of a vine. Hold onto it until another alligator head pops up on the right that you can use to get to the next lily pad in the water. Move right and you will see more vines that you can grab a hold of. Climb up to the top of each one before jumping across. You will have to press up to grab a hold of the vine. There will be one that has a star at the bottom of it and is just above an alligator head. Keep moving right using the vines and alligator heads until you land on a lily pad with a single vine above it. Jump up and grab the vine. Climb up it, all the way to the top and you will be taken to a secret area with three leaves and a health bushel. Grab everything then just drop off the vines and you will return to the previous screen. Move right, using the alligator head and the vines and you will come to two lily pads side by side. In the middle is a tiny mushroom. Jump on it and you will be granted an extra life. Move right and you will see an alligator. Jump on his head. Next there will be a water skipper (which looks like a gigantic spider crawling across the water). You will have to jump on its back to make it to the next lily pad. Once there, jump up and grab the leaf. Jump across and grab the other leaf on the next lily pad. Move right by jumping on the alligators and then onto the water skipper until you can reach the vines at the far right of the water skipper's movement. Jump to the next vine and you will see a star with an alligator head just below. Wait until the alligator has submerged and then resurfaced before jumping down onto his head. Now jump across to the next lily pad. There will be three vines above it, one long and two short. Grab a hold of the long one and climb all the way up and you will find another secret area with four leaves and one health bushel. Grab everything then jump off the vine to return to the previous screen. Move right again by jumping on the alligator's head. There will be a little rock just to the right of the alligator that you need to jump on. From there you can reach the next vine. Jump across the vines until you see the star. Drop down and grab the star and land on the lily pad. You will see an alligator head to the right, Jump to it and you will see two leaves. At almost the exact same time that the alligator head goes down, another one will pop up on the right. Jump to it and grab the leaves while doing so. Jump across to the lily pad on the right now. Climb the vines to get to the leaves at the top. Grab them and jump off onto the rock to the right. Jump to the next rock. You will see an alligator and the exit will be just to the right. This will take you to a bonus stage. After that, you will go to the first boss of the game. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Boss 1: The Snake (SMBOS1) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The first boss of the game comes right after level 5. It is a snake that coils its self around some wooden planks. There will be three planks on the screen, with Hefty on the top. There will be breaks within the first two so you can move around and get down to the bottom level. The snake will move along a plank and is vulnerable if you jump on its head. Every once in a while it will stop and look forward. This is prime time to jump on it, if you can. Stand on the very top plank and wait for the snake to either appear on the top or the middle one. If he is on the middle one, he will stop and look up right under the hole. Quickly drop down the hole and land on his head. Then jump back up to the top one and let him go by. Wait for him to appear near you again and jump on him once more. Do not jump down to the lowest plank as it is hard to get a good hit on him. Wait for the snake to be at the top or middle before making a move. Avoid all parts of the snake except for the head. After jumping on the snake three times, it will move off screen and not come back. A key will then appear at the top right of the screen. Walk up to it and press the down button and Hefty will pick it up. You can then walk right, but first you will want to drop down. Take the key right and you will find a fellow Smurf locked up in a cage. Walk into the cage and you will free Brainy Smurf. You will also be given a password. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Act 5: The Sarsaparilla Fields (SMACT5) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Move right and go about a third of the way up the incline then jump left to get the leaves. Avoid the dripping water as you do so, then go back to the right and jump across the gap. You can use the leaf to get the star, or just run and jump to clear it completely. Once across, there will be a spider that you have to avoid. It will move down along its web, hold for a few seconds then move back up. Wait for it to go up then move forward and you will see another one. This one you have to jump over when it is at the bottom of its web. Keep moving right, avoiding all the spiders in this fashion. When you see a ledge in front of you, jump up to it and avoid the dripping water. Move right and you find a leaf. Grab it then drop off to the right and move left to get the star. Now move right, through the small hole in the wall. Watch out for the bouncing black thing, and grab the health bushel. Move right until you go down an incline and you will see a spring board. Go up to it and press the down button and you will pick it up. Now take it back up the incline and press the down button at the very top, just before it levels off. Jump on top of it and use it to spring your self up to the ledge. Move left and you will enter a secret area. There will be three leaves and a health bushel here. You cannot reach them all by yourself, however. There will be a leaf that floats down from the ceiling that you need to jump on to get everything. Once you have, move to the right and you will go back to the previous screen. Go back to where the spring board was originally and it will magically be back. Use it to jump over the wall. Drop down and grab the leaves in the pit with the spring board. Jump out and move right. Avoid the caterpillar and the water drip and collect the four leaves and move right. There will be another bouncing black thing that you need to avoid and yet another one in the next room while grabbing the star and leaf. When you see a hole in the ground, just run across it and you will fall under a ledge and you will be able to grab two leaves. Continue right while avoiding the dripping water. There will be a floating leaf that you need to use to get up to the ledge where the caterpillar is. You will see a hole in the ground that you can fall into that will lead to another secret area. Within it will be a leaf and a mushroom that contains a health bushel. Grab both things, then situate your self where the mushroom was and use the floating leaves to jump back up to where you started and you will return to the previous screen. Now move right and you will see a spider surrounded by two leaves. Grab one leaf, then wait for the spider to move up before walking under and grabbing the other leaf. In the next area, there will be two bouncing black things that you need to avoid. Move right and drop into the hole with the leaf and spring board. Use the spring to get over the wall and into the next hole. Watch out for the dripping water. You will see a floating leaf. Jump on it and ride it down to the star. Now jump across and you will find the exit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Act 6: The Mountains (SMACT6) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- This level works differently than all the previous levels. In this one, you will go from bottom to top, rather than left to right. To do so, you will have to make many a switch back. Start out by moving right and jumping up to the ledge above, watching out for the bee. It is always a good idea to jump on every bee's head. Now move left and jump across the gap. Jump on the bee then move up two ledges. There will be a star off to the right. Jump over there to grab it, then return to the ledge you were just on. Move all the way to the left of the screen and you will enter a semi-secret area. There will be a health bushel and three leaves here. Do not fall into the hole in the ground. Go to the far right of the screen just after grabbing the leaves and you will go back to the previous screen, this time on the ledge above where you left. Go to the edge of the ledge and quickly move back to the left. There will be a rock that falls down once you are under it and it will hit you if you stand at the edge. Once it falls, jump to the tiny ledge on the left side and wait for the bird. Jump on to its back and it will take you across to a ledge with a star. Don't jump there yet, but rather go back in the other direction and you will see a ledge with a spring board on it. Jump onto that ledge and press down when you are standing in front of it and you will pick it up. Jump back to the bird's back and ride to the ledge with the star on it. Use the bird to get to the ledge just above it, then press down to let go of the spring board. Jump on the spring board to get to the next ledge. You will see several leaves here as well as a bridge. This bridge is the same kind from the last level that falls out from under you once you step on it, so jump across it while grabbing all the leaves. Move up and watch out for the falling rock that appears about the same time as a bird. Jump on the bird's back and ride it across, avoiding the bee. The bird will take you to some leaves which you can just jump off of the bird to grab them all. Watch your time before you do so though. This level eats through the time and you want to make sure you have a lot left before having to double back. Jump off the bird to the left. Run to the edge of the screen and you will enter a new area. Run up the incline. Near the top will be a rock that rolls down. Avoid it. Jump up to the next ledge and run across the screen. Walk to the edge and you will enter a secret area with a star and a mushroom that contains a health bushel. Return to the left side to go back to the previous area. Keep moving up. There will be a star on the left side. Keep moving up, watching out for the rocks. Eventually, you will see a bee. Jump on it and move right. There will be a bird that you can ride to two leaves. Jump off the bird to the ledge with the spring board. If you move all the way to the left, across the falling bridge, you will find another secret area. This one contains two leaves and an extra life, but you have to act very fast. There will be falling planks all around and you will have to jump to the small piece of hard ground quickly. Grab the extra life and quickly jump back. Now run to the edge of the planks and jump off back in the direction you came from to get back to the previous screen. Grab the spring board and move it to the highest point of the ledge you are standing on. Use it to jump up to the next ledge. Watch out for the bee. Once there, jump on its head and move right to find two more leaves. Grab them and fall back down. Use the bird and spring board to get back up if you have the time. Jump up the next two ledges and you will find the exit across a falling bridge. This will lead to a bonus stage. After that, you will move to Act 7. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Act 7: The Flight on a Stork (SMACT7) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- This level takes place on the back of a stork and you will be flying horizontally throughout the level. It is similar to the second act in the sense that the game play is different from any other levels. You will have control of the stork and you can move up and down. The screen will scroll automatically, so you want to avoid being caught behind a mountain. There will be different birds, all black, that come into the screen at different times. The small ones will hurt you if you touch them. They are easy to avoid. There will be bigger ones that come down and drop an acorn down at you. You will need to avoid both the acorn and the bird. All throughout the level will be bonuses like leaves and extra lives in the valleys. You will want to stay low to the ground so you can grab all the bonuses and avoid the birds that swoop down from the top. After the third bird that swoops down with the acorn, there will be an extra life you can grab. At the same time, storm clouds will appear that shoot lightning bolts down at you. You will also need to avoid these. The clouds will shake slightly and a thunder clap will happen to give you some warning. Eventually you will fly into a cave. There will be water drops that fall drop the ceiling that also create a hazard. Within the cave, the goodies that you can collect will appear at the top as well as the bottom. The cave will last for only about fifteen seconds before it ends along with the level. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Act 8: The Old Gold Mine (SMACT8) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- This level has Hefty in a mine cart rolling through an old mine. You can slow down by holding left and speed up by holding right. You can also jump within the cart, which you will need to do from time to time. You will start out by going down and incline then up another. When you reach the end, there will be a hole. If you jump, you will land on a piece of track with two leaves on it. If not, you will fall to a track that has a rolling rock you need to jump over. Just after jumping the rock, you will need to jump to get to the track above you. As you continue right, jump up to the higher track as soon as you can. The lower track will feature a star but has some near impossible jumps as well. It is best to take the safe road. Jump across the gap and avoid the water drip. A rock will come at you as soon as you hit the incline. You will then go down and be on the bottom track with two above you. Jump up to the top to grab a couple of leaves. As soon as you reach the end, you will fall to the middle track (if you stayed on the bottom, jump up to the middle track or you will fall to your death) and a rock will come at you. Jump it as you continue to move right. When you go down a hill, you will see a track in front of you that you can reach by jumping, but just ignore it. Instead, continue moving down and you will find two leaves and you will be able to make the jump to the next track in front of you that heads up. As you reach the top, you will see a small track that has a health bushel on it. There will be a water drip as well, so only go after it if you can time it right. Continue on and you will see two sets of tracks. Jump to the higher one and jump again to another track at the same height and you will grab a star. As soon as you fall, a rock will be in your face, so quickly jump over it as you go up the hill. On the other side, as you move down, there will be two leaves. You will begin to move up again. About halfway there will be a rock that you need to jump over. On your way down, there will be another rock that comes down at you from the next incline. Jump it, then ride up the hill and fall off the end. Do not go to the upper track or else you will die right before the exit. Rather ride along the bottom track and you will have to jump a small gap and you will be at the exit. Just ride to it and move on to the next level. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Act 9: Inside the Volcano (SMACT9) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- You will notice what appears to be water at the bottom of the screen. This is actually lava. As you move up in this level, so does the lava. Should it overtake you or you fall into it, you will die. Jump up to the ledge above you and move right. Jump up until you see a spring board. On the left side you will find a mushroom with an extra life. Grab it quickly then move back and use the spring board to jump up and left. There will be another spring board here. Use it to jump up. Every little block that you see in a set of two will fall out from under you once touched, so you will have to act very fast. Jump right and move up and you will eventually find solid ground again. There will be a wall with a mushroom and a spring board on the other side. Jump over to it and grab the health bushel inside of the mushroom and use the spring board to continue up. There will be another mushroom with a health bushel in the middle of the screen. Grab it quickly then continue up the right side of the screen, using the falling blocks. After jumping up a few levels, there will be another mushroom in the middle with an extra life inside of it. Grab it quickly then move to the left side of the screen and continue up. Grab the star in the middle on top of the disappearing blocks then go back to the left and jump up. Use the middle spring board to jump up and you will be at the end of the level. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Boss 2: The Dragon (SMBOS2) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you are not familiar with the cartoon, this fight won't make a lot of sense. If you are, you will instantly recognize that Jokey Smurf is who you have to save in this level. Jokey Smurf likes to give the other Smurfs presents that actually turn out to be bombs. You will notice a present in front of you when you start the level. There are actually an unlimited supply of them and they will act as your weapon for the fight. There are two ledges, one that you are standing on and one to your left. In between will be four blocks that you can stand on. On the ledge to the left, there will be a fire breathing dragon. Pick up a present by standing in front of it and holding the down button. Now jump up to the highest block and wait for the fire ball to go over your head. Do not duck when you are holding a bomb present because you will drop it. Once the fireball has gone by, press B and you will throw the present at the Dragon. Quickly jump back to the ledge and grab another present. By now, the dragon will have spit a fire ball at the top ledge and it will be on fire. If a ledge is on fire, it will remain on fire until another one is lit up. Since the fire will hurt you, jump to the second block then drop to the last block, the one that is closest to the dragon. He will spit a fire ball quickly, so throw the bomb at him and then jump back to the ledge on the right very fast. Grab a third bomb and jump up to the top ledge again since it should no longer be on fire. You will notice that the Dragon has much faster moving fireballs now so you will have to act VERY quickly and throw it down at him fast. After hitting him three times, a key will appear where the pile of presents was. Pick up the key and jump to the top block. You can then jump on the dragon's head and jump to the cage to free Jokey Smurf. You will then be given the password and move on to act 10. There is an alternative method to beating this boss, but it requires a faster ability to press buttons and relies on a much faster reaction time to what is on screen. If you are able to do these, it is slightly easier because you won't have to deal with the flaming blocks. Grab a present and quickly jump up to the top block. While on the way to the top block, throw the present. You will land on the block well before the bomb hits. Jump back to your ledge just as the bomb hits. If you go too soon, the game won't record the hit. If you go to late, you will be hit with a fire ball. You have to time it so that the dragon and bomb are just going off screen as you are moving to the ledge. Doing this will keep the top block free and you will be able to easily hit the dragon and not have to worry about your block catching on fire. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Act 10: The Sledge Race (SMACT10) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a tough level. It is like the Gold Mine, but is done on mountain sides on a sled. You start out by moving down a hill and you will see an "S" coin in front of you, just before a huge hole. These are speed boosts. They help you make the very large jumps. Move to the edge of the hole and jump. The speed boost will get you across the gap and you will be going down another hill. At the bottom of the hill will be an evil polar bear or some sort of abominable snow man, so jump before you reach the bottom to get over it. You can land on its head to kill it, or just jump past it all together. Grab the speed coin then jump the next gap. There will be a bunch of mini-gaps that you have to jump next. They are easy to clear so there are no speed coins here. There will be a star to grab. Eventually, you will come to a hill with two leaves on it. Grab the leaves as you go by and you will go up a hill. There will be a speed coin here and you will have a large gap to jump. You will land on a small ledge with a star on it. If you don't get the star on your way down, you will have to forgo it all together because if you jump again to get it, you won't be able to make the next jump. Jump at the end of the ledge and you will get a speed coin in mid-flight. When you land, you will have to jump again down to a ledge with a speed coin and another evil polar bear. Jump the bear, grab the coin and jump across the massive gap. When you land, there will be an extra life at the very edge. This is tough to grab, but if you want to, wait until the last possible second to jump, and once you land, jump immediately again. You will then be headed up a hill with a speed coin on it. You will have to jump to get this coin. When you land, you will be on a flat area. There will be a polar bear on it and a star over the mini-gap. Grab it then go down the next hill and grab the two leaves at the bottom, keeping an eye out for another polar bear at the flat spot. Go up the hill and jump across using the speed coin. You will land right in front of a bear. Jump it then immediately jump again to make the next gap. Go across and you will find a star at the end of a ledge and a bear on the next tiny ledge. It is near impossible to jump the bear and make the next jump, so if you can spear a heart, crash into the bear. This will knock you back a ways while the bear moves forward. You can then leap over the bear and jump again to the final ledge that has two leaves and the exit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Act 11: The Cliff (SMACT11) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- When you start out, you will see something in front of you that rotates will black holes in it. You will have to walk across this. Since it rotates, you will fall if standing on it as it does so. Before stepping onto it, watch it for a few seconds to get the timing down on how quickly it rotates. You will have to jump just before it rotates each and every time. It flips about once every one and a half seconds or so. Get the timing down in your head so you know when to jump. Jump straight up and down every time. You will also want to avoid the black spots as they are holes you will fall through. You will have to jump forward over these. Move right onto the gigantic rotating log. As you move, you will see stars and leaves. Grab them by waiting for the log to rotate and jumping underneath them. After the first star, you will see a little porcupine like creature that you should also avoid. It won't fall when the log rotates, so just jump over it. Once you finally make it across and back to solid ground, you will find a much needed extra life. Move right and you will find some leaves and a star. Just after the star will be another rotating log you have to walk across. Move across it slowly, just like last time. Avoid the porcupines and the holes while grabbing all the stars and leaves you can. There will be two health bushels over a hole in the log. Continue right and you will see a star. Just after the star will be solid ground and the exit to the level! Walk to the edge of the screen and move on to the 12th act. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Act 12: Gargamel's Manor House (SMACT12) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- You are inside of Gargamel's castle now. You start out on the window sill with Azrael the cat walking on the floor. You want to avoid the floor at all costs and move left. On top of the desk will be two leaves. Grab them first before jumping left onto the spring board that is hiding on the vase. Use the spring board to get to the shelf. There will be a fly here that you can jump on. Jump left as far as you can and you will land on a book shelf. At the top of the shelf will be a present bomb that you can pick up and drop on Azrael. From here, you will have to drop to the floor, so wait for the cat to be on the right and drop down, quickly run across, grabbing the leaves as you go, and jump up on the vase. Jump up to the desk, then up to the shelf to grab the star. Watch out for the tiny Venus Fly Traps because they will take a heart if you touch them. Continue left across the desk and you will see a fly buzzing around a spring board on a vase. Time your jump so you hit the fly right above the spring board. Use the board to jump to the next shelf. Move left across the shelves and you will land on a fire place with a gigantic pot on top of it. Avoid the pot because it contains hot water. To do this, you will need to jump right and grab the spring board on the bottom shelf. Drop the board on the edge of the fireplace first so you can grab the star that it at the top, then move it closer to the pot and jump across. Jump across the vases and you will see a spring board on the third one. You can use this board to jump up to the shelf above you and grab a present bomb to drop on Azrael. There will be a Venus Fly Trap right above you, so if it isn't worth the risk, just use the spring board to move left. You will see a shelf with a star on it. Jump across and there will be another shelf with another bomb disguised as a present. If Azrael is still around, drop it on him., If not, just drop down and grab the leaves. Kill the fly first. Move left to the book shelf. There will be two more present bombs here to kill Azrael with. Now move left to the edge of the screen and you will move to the next part. You will be on a stairway with tomatoes or apples rolling down at you. Every time you see one, just walk to the right of the star you are on and duck and it should roll right past you. Keep moving up, avoiding the apples as you go. When you switch back to the left, there will be a window with a mushroom in it that contains a much needed health bushel. The next window, the one above the treasure chest will have a mushroom with an extra life in it. Once you get to the top of the stairs, you will be at the end of the act. Move on to the boss. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Boss 3: Gargamel (SMBOS3) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gargamel is one of the easier bosses in the game, once you get the sequence figured out. Start out by moving right. You will then be bushed forward and Gargamel will be there. There will also be a seesaw like thing in between the two of you. Periodically, a bird will appear from the sky and drop an acorn on you. What you need to do is stand on the left side of the seesaw and wait for a bird to drop an acorn. Once the acorn is falling towards you, move right. As soon as it lands on the seesaw, jump on the end that is up in the air and the acorn will launch its self at Gargamel. When he is hit, he falls backwards with a scared look on his face. He will then resume his slow march towards you. As soon as you hit him, run back to the other side of the seesaw and wait for another acorn to be dropped directly at you. Once it is dropped, move out of the way and let it fly again. Do this one more time for a total of three acorns to Gargamel's head and a key will appear. Pick it up and you will automatically walk back to the stair way and down the stairs to the treasure chest. You will then free Smurfette for a Smurftastical good time! The Smurfs will dance as the credits roll. Congratulations! You beat the game! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bonus Levels (SMBONS) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- A bonus level is achievable after every level. To gain access to a bonus level, all you have to do is collect all five stars within that level. The stars are sometimes in plain sight but are, for the most part, hidden within the backgrounds and not readily noticeable. I did my best to point out every star along the way, but I know I missed some. Just keep your eyes out and you will find them all. The bonus level you get is random. The easiest one is The Dam. The hardest one is the Mushroom Bounce. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bonus Level: The Bubbles (SMBON1) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- This bonus level is a great chance to pick up some extra lives. There will be a gigantic tea cup on the left side of the screen. Jump on it and you will be encased in a bubble and you will gradually float up. You can hold the down button to slow the floating or press up to increase your speed. There will be bonus items all around, such as leaves, health bushels and extra lives. You only have 15 seconds within this level, so you must act fast. Quickly jump on the cup and you will move up. Move along the left side of the screen and you will find an extra life. Move to the top and go right and you will find two more. Avoid the butterflies at all costs. If you touch one, your bubble pops and you fall to the ground. You will have to jump into the cup again to find a new bubble. Keep moving and grab as many items as you can. After the 15 seconds are up, you will fall to the ground and your score will be tallied. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bonus Level 2: The Dam (SMBON2) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- In this bonus level, there will be water that slowly rises from the bottom. The goal is to grab as many of the goodies as you possibly can before the water reaches you. If you go up the right side, you will find an extra life as well as several leaves and nut bushels. If you act fast, you can jump to the middle and grab another extra life and move to the left side and jump up to the spring board where you can safely exit the level without drowning. You should be able to gain two extra lives without issue here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bonus Level 3: The Mushroom Bounce (SMBON3) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Within this bonus area, there are lines of mushrooms with bonus items in between them. What happens is you all out of the sky and glance either left or right off of the mushrooms and grab the prizes. You cannot stop your decent, so you want to move quickly and go after extra lives first, then leaves, then berries. This is a hard one to do and will last the shortest amount of time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Passwords (SMPWRD) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are two passwords in the game. They are granted to you after you defeat the boss after level five and the boss after level 10. Here they are if you want to jump ahead: Level 5: PBSP Level 10: ZRMS To enter these codes, you need to go to the options screen and move the cursor down to "password" Press A. This will cause the first letter to flash. Use up and down to switch the letter and right to move to the next letter in the sequence. Once all four letters are the password you desire, press start twice to go back to the title screen then select "Game" and you will begin on that level. Should you get Game Over at any time, the last password that you obtained will be entered automatically and you can restart at that level without having to enter it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- FAQS (SMFAQ) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: Who made this game? A: Infogrames published this game in North America and in Europe. It was developed by a company called Bit Managers. Q: When was this game released? A: It was released in 1994 in the US and in Europe. In 1998, Nintendo re- released it under the "Player's Choice Million Seller" line. The re-release has Super Game Boy Enhancements. Q: Is this game known by any other name? A: Yes. In just about every European Language, the name was slightly changed. One of the more popular names the Smurfs were knows as is "Schtroumpfs." I believe it to be Dutch. Q: I remember that show! Where can I watch it? A: It may be in syndication somewhere, so you should check your local TV guide. I remember it used to be on my local WB (now the CW) several years ago in syndication. Alternatively, Turner Home Entertainment has begun released the series in English on DVD in the United States. The first season came out in February of 2008 and retails for $24.99, which is a fair price if you ask me. I am unaware of who owns the rights/released the European DVDs, but the Smurfs are out on DVD in Europe as well. Q: Where can I find this game? A: I personally bought my copy on Amazon.com's market place for $5.45. It can also easily be found on eBay. Out side of that, you can check video game specialty shops in your area but they are hit and miss most often than not. Q: What is this I hear about a Smurfs movie? A: According to www.smurf.com, Sony Pictures Animation along with Columbia Pictures have obtained the rights to release a Smurfs movie for theaters. Full details can be found here: http://www.smurf.com/news-en Q: What are the author's thoughts on this game? Is it any good? A: To find my full thoughts, please check out my review on this website (Gamefaqs) under the "reviews" tab for this game. Q: How do I pass X in act Y? A: It should be covered in the walkthrough. If it isn't, please send me an e-mail with specific instructions on the area you are having trouble with and I will do my best to help you through it. My e-mail can be found at the top of this guide. Q: Can I host this guide on my site? A: No. I do not allow anyone to use my guides without expressed, written permission. I do not give permission unless I am asked, specifically, about this guide. I do not like automated e-mails. I will most likely only allow my guide to be hosted on a small website, usually one centered around the game or system my guide is for. For more information, see the Copyright section of this guide, at the bottom. Use of this guide without my permission is considered theft and will be reported to the proper authorities. Q: How do I contact you about this guide? A: E-mail is the best way to do so. My e-mail can be found at the beginning or the end of this guide, just remember to take the numbers 123 out of it because they do not belong. I keep them there to prevent auto scanning websites from obtaining my e-mail address. Alternatively, you can also contact me via MSN using the same e-mail address or on AIM using the screen name ArguroDeXill. While I am almost always online, I am not always at my computer and it may take as many as 8 hours to get a reply from me. Just be patient if this is the contact method of choice. I am not ignoring you, simply doing something away from the computer. Q: What other guides have you done? A: Just simply click on the name Arguro at the very top or the very bottom (orange text in a black box) of this guide and it will take you to my contributor page. From there you can see all the different things I have contributed to Gamefaqs. Q: I really like your guides. Can I donate money to you in support? A: If you really want to, you can send a Pay Pal payment to my e-mail address which is at the top or bottom of this guide. Please understand that any donated money does not mean I will name you in my guide. It also does not mean I will do any special work for you and it certainly does not give you any rights to host this guide or publish it anywhere. I do not want the user to feel obligated to pay me in any means. This is a free guide for personal, private home use. I will not reject your offer to pay me, but I do not want you to feel it is necessary. If you do decide to donate to me, please only donate what amount you are comfortable with, even if it is a single penny. Once a donation is made, it is final and there will be no refunds. This is an odd question and I debated about adding it for a long time, but when I saw other FAQ authors had a similar question, I felt it would be a valid addition. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Version History (SMHIST) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Version 0.30 finished July 9th, 2008 at 9:31 am Mountain Time Version included the beginning of the guide, including the introduction, walkthrough up to act 6, controls, Frequently Asked Questions, Version History and Copyright sections.
