Rather than having one large game with one sole objective, the programmer would create an atmosphere where several different mini-games (usually featuring a main character) had to be accomplished in order for the character to be successful. Games ranged from simple action heroes turning into daily workers, up until even the Nintendo series milking out their characters for every penny they got. The Incredible Crash Dummies is another classic example of a mini-games "game", as it employs the popular theme of a crash dummy participating in several crash tests in order to earn a living. This guide will briefly give you an overview of the game, provide some tips for completing the five different stunts, and hopefully benefit you in the meantime. Contributing/Feedback ---------------------------- I am no longer accepting contributions on this guide. You may still feel free to e-mail me for other gaming questions, but I cannot guarantee an answer. I'll be more than content to add your segment of information, and will also provide credit. If you have any questions you'd like added to the Common Questions section, ask. I simply don't have the time to sit around thinking of questions. Provide me with what you want to know! Updates ---------------------------- =12/21/04= vFinal Final update. =12/21/04= vFinal2 Received word via an e-mail that there was a "very hard" mode after "hard", along with some critical info on the ending. Adding this in, then reposting the final version. =11/28/04= vFinal Uploading the last version of the FAQ. Doing the same for the rest of my guides out there. It has been great while it lasted. =07/16/04= v1.0 Finished the FAQ. This one hardly took any time, and at least I can get a guide out for this barren series of games. =07/15/04= v1.0 Started the FAQ. Expecting this to take about 2-3 days to complete and finish. Not going to get overwhelmingly detailed, although I will attempt to ASCII map out some of the more complex stunts. ============================ - Table of Contents - ============================ 1) Introduction 2) Game Basics > Controls > Pay Earned 3) Walkthrough > Roof Jump > Air Bumper > Ski Slope > Bomb Factory > Cruise Missile 4) Codes 5) Common Questions 6) Copyright/Distribution/Reproduction Guidelines 7) Proper Credits -<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>- ============================ - 1) Introduction - ============================ The mini-game genre, albeit not the most popular one, can be enjoyable from time to time. By challenging yourself to greater heights, sometimes you'll achieve new high scores, or match an all-time new record. Titles such as Game & Watch Gallery, and Skate or Die are a few good examples of games that stretch the mini-game genre. However, mini-games are designed particularly for replay value when you're bored. The Incredible Crash Dummies works well as a title for the Game Boy because it's designed to be picked up and played wherever you are. The basic premise of the game is set around the life of a professional crash dummy. Yes, I'm talking about those yellow flannel-dressed plastic figures with warning targets printed all over their bodies. Their main goal is to get mangled, smashed, obliterated, and destroyed all for the matter of safety to consumers who purchase products. The game places you in the role of a dummy named Slick who is trying to earn a living. However, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to earn buckaroos, and the only way to increase your pay is to get more damaged, or complete more objectives during each of the five stunts. ---------------------------- _____________________ ##### GAME INFO ##### //////////|\\\\\\\\\\ Players: 1-2 (when secret code is activated) Developer: Software Creations Released: 1992 Rarity: fairly rare Special Features: n/a Cover Art on cartridge: - Shows a yellow car smashing into another crash dummy turning him into pieces -<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>- ============================ - 2) Game Basics - ============================ Due to the game design of the Incredible Crash Dummies, the Game Boy's simple two-button layout fits it almost in an elegant fashion. Most of the stunts only require simple actions for each button, and most of the time you won't even have to use them. The following section will describe the controls for each stunt. _________ /Controls/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ``Roof Jump`` A - leaps Slick off top of roof Left/Right - moves Slick left and right across the screen Up/Down - allows him to slow his fall, or straighten out for a penetration fall ``Air Bumper`` A - accelerates the car B - reverses the car Left/Right - turns the car left and right for directing purposes ``Ski Slope`` A - jumps for evasion purposes Left/Right - moves Slick left and right across the screen ``Bomb Factory`` A - blows air out to defuse lit bombs B - smashes hammer on conveyor belt to destroy non-bomb objects Up/Down - moves Slick up or down the individual conveyor belt Left/Right - scrolls Slick from each of the 3 conveyor belts ``Cruise Missile`` A - uses rocket boosters to push missile in specified direction Left/Right - rotates cruise missile in 360 degrees - In the Roof Jump, you'll first start off standing on the ledge of a roof. Move Slick to where you want him to jump from, then press A to leap. By pressing up while falling, it will slow your fall, and allow you to strafe easier. However, you won't be able to smash through as many balconies or rooftops without enough speed. The Air Bumper level is self explanatory. The Ski Slope is a little harder as you can really only go "left" or "right" down the slope. Simply switch left and right down the slope as if you were skiing. You can use A to leap over trees and annoying obstacles. The Bomb Factory is a little more control-frenzy, but accustomed well. Use the blow key to defuse lit fuse bombs, and the hammer to smash non-bomb objects. The Cruise Missile one is the hardest to get use to controller wise. After you're launched from the pad, you have to keep the rocket afloat while scrolling in the right direction. The rocket is only kept up by an engine which boosts in the direction the missile is facing. So by rotating it to the upper right, your rocket will go to the upper right WHENEVER you press the boost key. So it'll take a bit to getting use to hovering and navigating through crevices. ___________ /Pay Earned/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This is the primary goal of your dummy Slick when he takes on these stunts. His owners will pay him based on how much damage he can cause, or how well an objective is accomplished. Besides, dummies have to make a living somehow. Pay is basically sorted into a few categories: - OBJECTIVE METER: "Based on how well you complete the level, you'll receive money for grabbing items during it, or items that are successfully destroyed. For example, the more rooftops and balconies you destroy on the first stunt, the more base pay you will receive. A meter in the lower right corner will fill up each time you complete more objectives." - TIME BONUS: "If you complete a stunt with seconds left, they will be totaled into the final amount as a multiplier times the objective base increase. For example, if destroying a non-bomb object yields $.20, then you'll receive $.20 for every second left on the clock. - SLAMMIN N' JAMMING: "This is another dummy way of saying perfection. If you complete a level under perfect circumstances (not getting hit once or messing up), you'll receive a multiplier of x2 for your total score. Really great for bringing in the buckaroos." At the end of the game, your total pay rate is accumulated to form a dollar amount. If you receive a game over, or complete the game, your pay rate will be compared to the other high scores, which range from $50 to $15. -<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>- ============================ - 3) Walkthrough - ============================ As usual, many mini-games are tougher to walk a person through because of their wacky randomness and unpredictability. Regardless, this section will describe tips, hints, and almost attempt to guide you through each of the five levels you will come across while playing the Incredible Crash Dummies. __________ /Roof Jump/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Today you have to do some stunt work for the crash dummy team. Apparently, they want to test out some new safety features, and your goal is to crash through as many rooftops and balconies as you can manage. However, watch out for the streaming fires that pop out of the windows. Don't forget to hit the target at ground level. ________ [ START ] - This stunt is fairly easy once you get use to the locations of | | the objects to be destroyed. The ASCII to the left is just a | X | sample of what some of the action could look like. Regardless, | X | start off by using the left/right buttons to move Slick back | | and forth. When you're ready to jump, press A. In order to | X | break the rooftops and balconies, you need to be flying down | X | with Slick's head directly down. If you hold Up, he will slow | X | down and this allows him to strafe a tad quicker. There will | X | be a few fires to avoid, but for the most part, try to crash |___==___| through as many objects as possible. MAKE SURE you hit the target at ground level, otherwise the effort will be a waste. EASY target location: Middle Difficulty: ** NORMAL target location: Left HARD target location: Right ___________ /Air Bumper/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Today you have to smash test a new car's air bumper system. However, the maintenance team forgot to inflate the bumper, and you're going to have to collect some air cans before attempting to crash the car into a wall. Avoid the rivets in the ground and walls on the side, otherwise your car will lose air. Hit the target on the wall at the end to ensure a victory. |======| - This stunt is fairly simple, as long as you pick up enough | | powerups. You'll start off in a fairly old car with a deflated | | bumper. Use the A button to accelerate, and the B button to go | A | reverse. Race ahead along the course, and pick up AS MANY of / __ \ the air cans as you can. Along the way, you'll also be able to / / \ \ get money powerups, a 1UP, and even a car wrench. Use the ramp \ A | | | near the middle to reach the floating air can. Avoid hitting \ \ \ \ the track walls, as you will lose air. You can hit some light \ \ \ A\ objects as long as you're going fast. Avoid potholes unless \ \__\ \ absolutely necessary. Hit the target on the wall at the end for a mission completion. Target location: Middle Difficulty: * __________ /Ski Slope/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Today you have to test out a new ski slope to see if it's safe enough for human participants to go on, without killing themselves. The goal is to navigate safely down to the finish line, but you must hit as many flags as you can along the way. Reach the finish line in the allotted time for a mission completion. |===| - This stunt is a tad harder as the controls get tougher to manage. | | You'll start off at the top of the ski slope. Use the left/right / x \ on the control pad to move Slick to the left and right as he / T x\ skies down. Remember that in skiing you should normally adjust \ x \ left/right, otherwise, you'll lose control. Ski into the flags \ x T / as you go down, but avoid the side bumpy parts of the track, and \__ x \ the trees. If you jump-crash, or hit a tree, you will lose a / x/ life. You can manually jump by pressing A to avoid trees. You / x / need to hit a minimum amount of flags on each difficulty. EASY Objective: 15 Flags Difficulty: *** NORMAL Objective: 20 Flags HARD Objective: 25 Flags _____________ /Bomb Factory/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Today you have to ensure quality control at a munitions factory. Your main goal is to pack 40 bombs before the day's end, without getting yourself blown to smitherines. ___________ | 1 2 3 | - This stunt is one of the more enjoyable stunts during the game. | 1 2 3 | You primarily have two functions during this one. Your goal is | 1 2 3 | to blow out (press A) any bombs with lit fuses, and to smash | 1 2 3 | (press B) anything which is not a bomb. Two explosions or | 1 2 3 | errors will result in a loss of life. The objects will come | 1 2 3 | down one of three conveyor belts at a random pace. You can move \| |-| |-| |/ Slick from belt to belt by pressing left or right, and up/down each one individually. The speed of each belt will increase as the level moves further on. Try to always blow the bombs out first, and get near the beginning portions of each belt. EASY Objective: 40 Bombs Difficulty: *** NORMAL Objective: 50 Bombs HARD Objective: 60 Bombs _______________ /Cruise Missile/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Today you have to test out a new cruise missile developed by a third-world nation (just your luck, eh?). They want you to guide the missile to the target at the opposite end of the course in outer space, but don't crash along the walls or get hit by any projectiles. The missile has a weak boost engine, so prepare for some close navigation. _ / \ - This stunt is the toughest in the game, but somewhat normal if / \ you get use to the controls. You'll be launched from a starting | U | pad way off from the target. You have to guide your rocket towards | S | the right direction in the allotted time. You can press A to use | A | the missile boosters, which will push you in the direction your | | rocket is facing. Just get use to keeping your rocket slightly / \ upward, and use a heavy boost to heave it as it hovers. The path /__|||__\ will split into upper and lower routes, so be careful in the tight quarters. Mini-rockets will be launched from the ceilings and floors in an attempt to hit you. Keep focus and make sure you hit the target at the end. TARGET Location: End of course Difficulty: **** ________ /The End/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= After you complete the five stunts, the game will reset (holding your current pay total), and proceed to the next difficulty. The game starts at EASY, then NORMAL, HARD, and a hidden VERY HARD mode. After you beat the twenty stages (although technically only five different ones), you will then proceed to see the ending. It shows the crash dummies relaxing on a tropical island after their enormous hard work blasting away at test sites. You get to see your overall total money earnings through all four modes, along with your name on the scoreboard. ^ I'd like to thank Fahad Anwar for providing the hidden "Very Hard" mode, along with the game's ending. -<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>- ============================ - 4) Codes - ============================ In case you never figured it out yourself, codes are the key difference between certain games being fun, and other ones being a "blast." This section will provide you with some brief in-game codes that can be retrieved. I'd like to thank: http://www.gamewinners.com/ - for providing these two in-game codes. ___________________ +)(+ ACCESS CHEAT MODE +)(+ Press UP, DOWN, LEFT, and then RIGHT at the title screen. - A mini cheat mode screen will pop up. It will ask for a password. Unfortunately, I did not beat the game to get this password. Compared to some other great titles such as Final Fantasy Legend, or Battletoads, the Incredible Crash Dummies definitely comes up short. With only five different mini-game stunts, and hardly any other means for replayability, most players will find this to be a forgotten title in their Game Boy collection. Most of the stunts can be mastered after only a few tries, and there's just no "jazz" that makes the player want to try the game again. I'd rate it a 5/10 if I were to review it. At least it tries to add a humor rating to the game with corny safety jokes. << Are there any other ported versions of the game? >> - Yes, the Incredible Crash Dummies were released on several other systems. You can find versions of it on the Game Gear, Sega Genesis, SNES, NES, and SMS. As far as I know, the SMS and NES versions seem to be the best. The Genesis and SNES seem like horrible conversions to 16-bit systems. The Game Boy version is definitely not the best, and probably just mediocre when compared to the rest. << Why are crash dummies being portrayed as real life characters? >> - Well, in case you were born in a different dimension, the crash dummies were two popular idols during the late 80s/early 90s. Kids across America crazed over these two plastic figurines who could be obliterated, smashed, and incinerated all for the safety of American consumers. Well, some of the giant toy companies decided to take advantage of this. Real-life action figures were made of the crash dummies (I happened to have one), along with buckle up safety programs, and heck, even a crash dummy smash car (I had that one too). Video game companies took their share of the market, and attempted to make some Crash Dummy video games. They weren't a big success. -<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>- ===================================================== - 6) Copyright/Distribution/Reproduction Guidelines - ===================================================== This FAQ/Strategy Guide/Walkthrough is my own published work, and copyrighted by Christopher Zawada.
