It has a feeling of Chip 'N Dale: Rescue Rangers for the NES in the sense that you pick up boxes and throw them to defeat enemies. The idea is that the Blues Brothers' musical equipment is stolen and they have to travel all over town looking for the equipment because they have to put on a concert that night. Sufficient enough reason for a game, I suppose. What is quirky about this title is that there is no story contained within the game. If you do not have the manual, you would be lost as to why Jake and Elwood are going to such bizarre locations. While the story being contained within the manual was the norm for this time period, I found it odd that there was nothing, not even one screen, to indicate what was going on. Thankfully, I have access to the manual and am able to relate some enemy names and locations to you (otherwise, I would be as lost as you). As I write this guide, I am playing it for the first time. I typically do this with my guides, as I think things through much more methodically when I have to then type what I just did. It is probable that I missed a few hidden areas or items, and I assure you I didn't do it on purpose, I just didn't know they were there. If you see something I didn't, or would just like to comment on this guide or any of my guides in general, I am always open to feedback. You can send any and all feedback to my e-mail address, which is at the top of the guide. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Controls (BBCONT) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Directional pad: Moves your character left or right and crouches A button: Jump B button: Pick up box/throw box Start button: Shows information screen Select: Pauses ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mechanics (BBMECH) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thus game is a simple platformer, with horizontal and vertical scrolling. There are a few things that separate this game apart form others out there. This is a description of said things. The information screen is key if you want to prolong your gameplay. It is a simple screen and can be accessed by pressing Start at any time during play. Accessing this screen pauses the game and gives you a few simple, key pieces of information. The first one is 'Bonus.' The bonus score goes up every time you collect records (black circles throughout the game). One record is worth one point. When you reach one hundred, you gain another piece of energy. The energy is your life. Every time you touch an enemy for any reason, you lose one bit of energy, represented by hearts. The hearts on screen during gameplay in the to right are your energy. If you lose all your energy, you lose a life. When you lose your life, you start again at exactly the same spot with three hearts on your energy bar. If you lose all your lives, you can continue with the 'Encore,' assuming you have them. When you lose all your energy, lives, and encores, the game is over. A few interesting things of note: While one record gives you one bonus point, a broken record (half of a black circle) will take ten points away. If you lose a life, you lose all bonus points. Any bonus points earned carry over to the next level, assuming you have any currently accumulated. You an have a maximum of five hearts on your energy bar. Gaining another heart will give you an extra life! Extra lives are also found sparingly within the game. They are represented by a hat and sunglasses, and look familiar to anyone who has seen the Blue Brothers movies or shows. Level goals are represented by a certain piece of musical equipment. Touching it will automatically take you to the next level. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Walkthrough (BBWALK) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- At the start of the game, you are given the choice between Jake and Elwood as your playable character. There is absolutely no discernable difference between the two, other than appearance. They both jump, throw and move the same. Play as your favorite. If you do not have a favorite, choose Elwood, since he is the one that the cursor is on by default. Also, his actor is still alive. The game will make you press the start button at the beginning of every level, so press start and begin level one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level One The Department Store (BBLVL1) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Start out by moving right. You will soon pass a giant pillar. Jut to the right of there pillar will be three boxes. Pick one up with the B button and keep moving right. After a second pillar, you will find the first enemy, an Evil Cop. Press the B button to throw your box to kill him. It only takes one hit. Watch out for his bullets. He will stop and shoot at you if he sees you. Once he is dead, walk back and pick up a second box, then continue right. You will pass another box laying on the ground. Right after this, is another enemy with a baseball bat, the 'Banana Spit' as he is called in the manual Throw your box at him before he touches you and you will kill him. Go back and pick up the closest box and continue right. Right after a door with a couple of tables by it, will be another Evil Cop. Throw your box at him to kill him and continue right. There will be another Evil Cop a few paces right. Since you don't have a box, you cannot kill him. Duck his gunfire by holding down on the control pad. He will shoot in bursts of two that will always fly over you if you duck. Crawl close to him and wait for the window after the second shot and jump over him. There will be some stairs immediately behind him. Quickly jump up the stairs before being shot. Do not touch the present. If you do, it explodes on you and freezes you in place. While the explosion doesn't hurt you, the cop can and will shoot you before you can move. Now go left and up the stairs. You have to jump up the stairs. If you walk, you will go through the stairs and fall back down to the floor with the cop. At the top of the stairs is a box. Pick it up and move left. A few steps to the left will be another enemy. Kill him by throwing the box and keep moving left. You will come to another set of stairs, this time much smaller. At the top will be several records. Grab them by walking and or jumping into them. These are what fuels your bonus on the information screen. There's twelve in all. While you are doing this, there will be a baseball bat enemy below you, walking left and right. Go to the end of the ledge on the left and wait for him to pass under going to the right. Drop down immediately and move left, away from the enemy. Almost immediately after, there will be another cop enemy. Duck down and crawl close to him and jump over him after he fires two shots and reach the stairs as fast as possible. Climb the stairs and be careful not to fall through. At the top of the stairs, you will see two round balloons. Touching these causes you to rise straight up. You can moves side to side with the directional pad. The balloons will give you access to many records as well as a secret area. Since you have two chances to get at both, go for the secret area first since it has more records. It will be a passage way on the left wall, just above the present that is surrounded by records. If you missed both times, skip down two paragraphs. In the passage, you will see three boxes. Pick one up and move left. You will need to throw it almost immediately, because there will be a new enemy, Marilyn, the waitress. After killing her with the box, go pick up a second box and move left to a ladder. You can climb the ladder with the box by jumping and pressing up. At the top of the ladder, on the right, will be another new enemy, the farmer named Ringo. Kill him with your box that you brought up the ladder and move right, gathering all the records as you go. When you reach a wall, go back the way you came, all the way back to where the balloons where. After using the balloons to gather as many records as you can, you need to move to the right. Since the stairs only take you back the way you came, you need to make a long jump. It is best if you position yourself one stair from the top and jump from it's very right edge. Be careful not to fall through the stairs down to the cop enemy below. After making the ledge on the right, follow it until you reach a floating platform that takes you up when you jump on it. It may not be there at first, so when you reach a dead end, wait a few seconds for it to appear. After riding it up, jump off and move right. Jump up to the top step and gather records. Watch out for the baseball bat guy that comes walking back and forth. You should follow him to the other side and try to jump over him right as he starts to come back towards you. There is just enough room to make the jump without getting hurt. Once you reach the other side, fall down and you will see several records, two boxes, a present and a heart. Don't touch the present, as it explodes and costs you 20 bonus records. Grab all the records and the heart. Pick up a box and move right and climb the stairs. Position yourself on the second to last step, and wait. An Evil Cop will be walking on the top step. When he comes into view, throw the box at him to kill him. He cannot shoot you if you are one step from the top, but you can hit him. Once he is dead, grab all the records and move right. You will drop down and find some conveyor belts. The belts give no indication as to which direction they move until you stand on them. You can counteract the belts by moving in the opposite direction. Drop down two belts and move to the third one down. It will move you right, but you want to go left. After a short walk, you will be at a ledge with a heart and several records leading straight down. Jump and try to grab the heart and records. If you miss, you can come back easily, so don't worry. After falling, grab the box and move right. you will find another hole in the ground. Drop down here to continue on. If you missed the last heart, jump across, kill the baseball bat enemy and jump back up on the conveyor belts to move left again. Once you make your way back around again, take the hole down, rather than jump across. There will be two boxes and a baseball bat enemy here. Make sure he isn't in the whole when you jump in (you can see him from the ledge if he is). Grab one box and kill him. Grab the second box and move right carefully. You'll see the conveyor belts at the top of the screen. Just past this is a pillar and another box. Walk VERY slowly. There will be another floating platform and just on the other side will be another waitress enemy. You need to act FAST and throw your box to kill her just as she appears on screen. It is a good idea to throw and then duck instantly to avoid her projectile. Here is where things get tricky. You need to jump on the floating platform. If you miss, you will fall all the way back to the very first set of stairs you saw. Should you fall, you will have to go back through the rest of the level again, only thing time, all the enemies you killed will be back, but the boxes you used won't be. This makes for a very frustrating time, so be sure you take it nice and easy and make your jump. The platform will take you to a ledge with two boxes and another platform. Grab one of the boxes and jump on the new platform. Ride it up and you will see a cop on the right. Kill it before you become even with it, so you will avoid his bullet. Jump down and grab the second box, and ride the platform up again, this time jumping off where the cop was. Go right and you will see another platform. Take it up and jump left to yet another platform. Ride it up and you will have to jump off left and right into an enemies face. If you have the box still, use it now. If not, duck instantly so he doesn't shoot you, crawl towards him and jump over after the second bullet is fired. Move right fast so he goes off screen and watch out for two farmer enemies. Jump over both of t hem and keep walking left until you find a tree. It doesn't look much like a tree, since it is one large vertical stick with smaller sticks going out horizontally. Before you jump into the tree, you can access that bonus area from earlier in this spot if you missed it. Be aware though, you will have to go through the rest of the level again and without boxes to kill enemies. It probably isn't worth it, but just jump off the ledge on the left to get to it. From the base of the tree, you want to jump up, using the branches as support. Just jump straight up and you will eventually reach the top. It has two boxes and a cloud that you cannot jump through right above it. Grab a box and move to the right edge of the branch. You will need to jump right. Your destination is on a cloud off screen. Because you are holding the box, you won't jump as far, and that is what you need, because on the cloud will be another waitress enemy. You should land two notches below her, just under her projectile path. After she shoots, tap the jump button ever so slightly and throw the box at her to kill her. Climb up to where she is and jump off the edge of the cloud right. Remember that if you fall at any point here, you will land back on the ledge with the two farmers and the Evil Cop. Keep jumping on the clouds while moving right until you come to a cloud with two boxes on it. Pick up one and move to the very far right edge and jump again. Jump to the next cloud and hold. On the very next cloud, which is really close, will be another waitress. You have to be fast on moving right and watching out for her projectile. Jump above it then land on the top of the cloud and throw your box at her to kill her. Now keep jumping right along the clouds until you reach what appears to be the end (you won't see any more clouds to the right). Jump off to the right and you will land on another cloud. Move to the right edge and jump off. You will begin to fall through hundreds of records. Use the right and left directional buttons to gather as many as you can. Watch out for the broken records that will deduct ten records for each one you touch. When you land, there will be a balloon on the left. Touch it to gently rise up and gather more records. When you reach the top of the screen, you will fall again and can grab more on your way down. If for whatever reason you miss the cloud and land on the roof in the middle, just move right and use the little tree to jump off. You won't get as many records, but you can still reach the balloon. You can use the ladder on the left to climb up to the small tree and jump again to attempt to get a few more records. Be careful of those broken records, they can make it not worth your time. Once you are satisfied with the amount of records you have grabbed, move right and you will see a guitar. This is the end of the level. Jump up and touch it to move on to level 2. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 2 The Warehouse (BBLVL2) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Start out by moving right. You will quickly pass some small pillars before you see some crates with records on top. Quickly jump up onto the crates before an enemy, MC Phone, shoots at you. He acts just like the Evil cop, two shots, pause, two shots, so you should have no problem dealing with him if you can't avoid him. After getting the records, jump right to the top of the ladder. From here, jump straight up and you should end up on a ledge with more giant crates. Move left and jump to another ledge with more records. After snagging them, go back right, staying well above the spray paint enemy (MC Phone) and you will find a few more records. Keep moving right and another spray paint enemy will appear. Jump up on the crates to avoid his projectile. Use these crates to get around him and to the other side. Drop all the way down and you will land on a conveyor belt that move you right. There will be spikes at the end of the belt so you need to jump. In order to clear the spikes, you will have to press the right button on the directional pad to gain extra momentum. Since the belt is moving and you are moving along with it, you will move faster than normal, so be prepared to jump quickly. If you jump higher than farther, you will land on the ledge above you. If you land on the belt across the spike pit, it will move you left back into the spikes! Be sure to move fast so you don't get hurt. From the left moving belt, you need to jump straight up to the ledge above you. If you landed on a ledge originally, move right across the ledges until you see a present on one of them. If you touch this present, it will take twenty records away from you, so avoid it. Drop off the right side of the ledge before the present and move right. Jump up again to another ledge and grab two records, then use the belts to jump across the spike pit and move all the way into the far right corner by the wall. From here jump up and left to the ledges, moving in a mostly vertical pattern, until you find a ledge near the ceiling with records on it. Jump to this ledge then position yourself under the pillar in the ceiling. This is not a pillar in this level, but a tube that helps you jump. Going right at the top of the tube isn't recommended. There will be a few records to grab, but many enemies to avoid and tight spaces in which you must avoid them. It is best to go left. At the top of the tube, press left and you will be moved onto the ledge. If you fall back down, jump again and hold left. Grab one of the two boxes you see and move left. be ready to be quick on the trigger and throw it as soon as you see an enemy on the far left of the screen. Grab the second box and continue left until you reach another enemy. Walk just past the ladder and kill him. Now go back to the ladder and climb up. Go right and use the conveyor belt as well as your directional pad to get enough speed to jump over the spikes. There will be a present on the ledge on which you land. Jump right over the spikes and grab the two records as well as the present for an additional twenty records. Jump right again over the spikes and you will land on a conveyor belt that moves you left. Fight against it to the right and jump up to the ladder and climb up. At the top of the ladder, grab the box on the right, then go left. There will be giant presses that come down and try to smash you above the conveyor belts. You will need to time your trips across them well. The first conveyor belt moves left. Move past the press and walk left to find an enemy. Kill him with the box. He is called Rivet Man by the manual. He shoots rivets at you just like the cop and the spray paint guy. Move left and you will see another conveyor belt, this time with two presses. It moves right as well. You will need to jump at the very end of the belt or you will fall down and have to climb back up. After you jump across, head down the ladder and you will land on a conveyor belt. It will move you left, so use its momentum to jump across the spike trap. You will land on a second conveyor belt. Do the same thing here. The third belt will move right, so you need to work against it to get across and not be thrown back into the spike pit. Once across, go up the steps and jump right. You will see several construction beams here. All the horizontal ones are ledges and the vertical ones can be used as ladders. Jump up quickly so you don't get shot by the construction worker. Jump up and to the right. Grab the five records on the ledge below an enemy, then move right, climb up to that ledge out of range, and jump up to the small ledge above with three records. Grab them and move right. If you are feeling bold, there is an opportunity to grab three presents that will net you sixty records total, but will put you in danger's way and cause you to go back to the beginning of the level. Instead of going right, take the ledge with the five records to the far left. Directly above you will be an enemy. Climb the beam on the far left and avoid his projectile. Jump up on the ledge on the left and grab the present. Continue left and you will drop down a ledge. Pick up the box and go down the ladder and you will find two more presents guarded by another enemy. You will need to throw your box fast as to not get hit. Grab the two boxes, then go left and down and you will eventually fall back to the start of the level. You will have to go through everything up to this point again. Drop down then jump up the ice blocks. You will have to be careful here because everything is covered in ice and that means you will slip and your momentum can and will carry you further than you want to go, so take it slow and easy. Go right and jump up when you see the first ledger. Just above it will be a smaller ledge with a present that gives you twenty records. Snag it then go back down and move right. The next ledge has a present that explodes and costs you twenty records, so don't touch it. Instead, keep moving right. The next present is more of the same, so avoid it and continue right. You will come to a rivet shooter after a few steps. You'll have to avoid him, since you cannot kill him without any boxes. The ledges provide a good means to do so. Just beyond him will be several more ledges, at the top of which will be a heart. Grab it for health then move back down, taking care not to be seen by the rivet shooter and move right. You will exit the ice area and come to a place with a small ladder on the edge of the wall. Going right will cause to fall a long way and you will have to retrace all your steps, so instead take the ladder up. Use the stairs to go left, then right. At the top of the right set will be another rivet shooter. Avoid him and jump up and left to the next ledge. You can go right here and fall all the way down. Part way, you will find a hidden area on the left that grants an extra life, but the amount of enemies here and the fact that you have to go all the way back up past all the spike traps and presses, makes this endeavor not worth it. You'll spend a life to earn a life, so it is best to leave well enough alone. Going to the left, you will find a conveyor belt with two presses. This one is a little tougher than the last because it moves you to the right. Timing is key here. The presses fall a long way, giving you a little more time to get past them. One you do, continue left and the next belt will move you left, which means you go faster. Timing is essential through this entire part. Remember you can walk in the opposite direction of the conveyor belt to slow yourself down. After you get past the four presses, you will find a third conveyor belt that moves you right. There are no presses here, so make your way across it and you will find two spring boards on the other side. The spring boards help you jump. Press the jump button right as you spring up and you will jump extra high. Use them to jump up and to the left and go down the slope. At the bottom of the slope will be another spring board. Jump up and do the same thing, moving left until you finally reach a ladder at the end of several spring boards and slopes. Go down the ladder. There will be a rivet man at the bottom. It might almost be easier to jump to the left from the top of the ladder. If you go down part way and lead him in close to the ladder, then hurry back up and jump, you can avoid him easily. Otherwise, you will have to duck and jump after his second shot and run to the other side. Once you make the other side, use the crates to jump up to a ladder. Climb the ladder. The pillar on the left of the ladder is actually a warp. Jump onto it and you will be transported all the way across the level, down and right, and come out near some crates. Go right. Jump to the top of the crates and look to the right. Above the highest crate will be a pair of headphones. These mark the end of the level. touch them and move on to level three. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 3 The Jail (BBLVL3) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- You start out at the top of a building on level 3. The only way to go is down a ladder, so take it and you will drop down to a ledge with a new enemy, "Quiet Riot," as the manual refers to him, or, as we shall call him, the Army guy (we don't want any Dee Snider lawsuits now). The army guy moves fast, so be quick and move to the left to grab a box and kill him. Go right and go down the ladder. Go a little to the right and you will see another ladder. Instead of taking this up and dealing with several tough enemies and no ammunition, go to the chain link fence. You can crawl along this like a ladder, but you can go left and right in addition to up and down. Take the fence all the way to the right. There will be an army guy at the end of the fence, just below it, but he will walk all the way to the left and you can drop down and move into the next room before he comes back at you. Once you move right, you will see a ladder. Just past the ladder will be two boxes. Beyond the boxes will be a giant rat. The rat is too low to the ground to kill with a box, so you will have to avoid it. Jump over it with a box in two and look for the next ladder. Climb up it (it should be somewhat short) and at the top will be another new enemy, a bazooka shooter named Herman the Mad Doctor. You can throw your box while still on the ladder, just hold left and press the throw button. If you miss and or don't have a box, you can still make it past him without being hit. He is methodical in his shots and there is just enough room in-between to make it up the ladder and to the right, pushing him off screen before he hits you. If he shoots at you, duck and it will go over your head. Move to the right and collect the records as you go. Go past the ladder on the roof (it just takes you back the way you came) and drop down off the ledge on the right. If you fall right of the edge, you will land on another. Move to the left slowly. There will be an army guy here, but he will walk quite a ways to the left. When he does, move in and collect a present for twenty records. Move back right. Fall of the edge on the right and as soon as you do, hold left so you hung the wall as you fall. You should land on an area with a box and a small hole in the wall through which you must crawl. Pick up the box on the other side of the hole and use it to kill the army guy. Go left and go down the ladder. Grab one of the three boxes and move left and down. Climb up the next ladder you see. There will be two enemies at the top of the ladder, so stay on it and use your box to kill the cop. You want to kill the cop since he shoots at you and the army guy does not. Once the cop is dead, you can quickly go to the top of the ladder and grab another box on the right and use it to kill the army guy. If you miss the cop, go back and get another box. Move to the left. You will come to a ladder. Take it down two levels and you will see a single record. Grab it and move left. Grab the next record, and duck and move left to crawl through the small hole. Keep moving left and you will find two small ladders that take you down to an area with five records in an arc. Jump and grab them, avoiding the spike pits as you do so. Move left and climb the stairs. Grab the records at the top and drop off left. Jump over the spike pit and grab the next set of records at the top of the new stairs. Keep moving left until you come to a ladder. Climb the ladder and move right, collecting records as you go. Climb the next ladder. Be sure to avoid the rat on the ledge. Grab the record and jump up to the next ladder. The present on the left will grant you twenty records, so snag it and the two single records and move off to the right. Drop down and duck to crawl through the space. Be sure you crawl past the spikes on the wall before standing up or else they will hurt you. Moving right will find you a present that grants twenty records, but just behind it will be a bazooka guy, so be very careful. Stay in the crawl position and you can grab the present and avoid the projectile at the same time. You will have no choice but to jump over the bazooka guy, so you will need to get close, wait until he shoots, then jump over him before he shoots again. He will turn to shoot at you on the other side, so you will need to jump again quickly and grab the ladder on the right. At the top of the ladder, go left. Going right will take you back the way you came. Jump across the gap. If you miss and fall, you will be right next to the bazooka guy again. Grab the records as you go left. Climb the small ladder and grab a couple more records as you go. Drop down one step and move left. When you see a ladder, take it down immediately. There is a bazooka guy on the other side and not enough room to jump over him in the small corridor (and nothing on the other side anyway). The ledge you land on will be a slippery one, so it will take some extra work to move. Pick up a box and fall off the left side. Your momentum will take you to another ledge on the left side of the hole. On the wall will be a spike trap, so let go of the directional pad as soon as you step off the edge. Grab the records and fall of the right side, doing the same with the directional pad. Grab the records and fall left. You will come to a ledge with several records. Grab them, then get in the exact middle of the ledge. Hold down and press A to fall through the ledge. You will land in a small area with a heart and spikes on either wall. On top of the walls well be presents. The right one will grant you twenty records and the left one explodes. Pick up the right one, but leave the left one. Now go back up the ledges with spikes on the wall. Once you get back up the small ladder (remember the bazooka guy is on the left) go to the right ever so slightly to where you see a large vertical pipe directly under the floor. Crouch above the pipe and press A to fall through the floor. You should land on a small ledge with a spike pit on the left and another hole on the right. Drop right and you will land a short distance down, right in front of a hole in the wall. There is a rat on the other side, so let him walk away before going through. Avoiding the rat, take the ladder down (the present on the other side of the rat explodes). The ledge below the ladder has two rats. They have long paths back and forth, so you should have ample time to get down and move right. Jump up to the very next ladder you see and climb it to get a couple of records. This ledge is a slippery one, but there is an extra life at the end of it! You will have to be very careful though. Running and jumping will gain you the life, but will also cause you to fall down and hit a spike wall. What you need to do is carefully approach the side and jump slightly allowing you to fall off the left, gaining the life and missing the spikes at the bottom. This will take you to the very far left of the ledge with the two rats. Walk carefully right and jump to the ladder again and wait for the rat to move under you. Once it does, drop back down and continue right to find the ladder that first took you to this ledge. Walk past it and avoid the rat on the other side. You can jump on the tables to avoid it easily. Once on the right side of both rats, jump up to the next ledge and take the small ladder down. Pick up the box and take the next ladder up about halfway or so. Looking right you will see a crawl space in the wall. If you look very carefully, there is an enemy directly on the other side of the wall. You will need expert timing to throw the box off the ladder, through the hole and kill the army guy on the other side. If you hold the right side of the directional pad, you should get a slightly better view. Timing is key here. His walk is short, so watch him move back and forth several times and throw when you are confident you will hit him. If you miss, you will have to try the old fashion way of getting by him. Now crawl through the hole and grab the four records before going down the next ladder. There is a spike pit directly below this ladder. You will need to go down just far enough that your head clears the previous ledge and hold right to fall off on the other side. Don't worry about the one record on the left. Just grab the records on the right. Go down the ladder and move left. Go up the next ladder and continue left. There will be an army guy here. Wait for him to go left and follow him to find two boxes. Pick one up and use it to kill him. Move left. When the ceiling in the hallway gets higher, there will be a rat. Take advantage of the higher ceiling and jump over it. Continue left and take the ladder down. It will be over a spike pit as well, so hold right and drop off. Move right. There will be several small spike pits to avoid as well as four records to collect. Grab them by jumping over the spike pits. At the end, there will be a crawl hole in the wall. Go through it and pick up one of the boxes. Move right. The present is booby trapped, so jump over it and continue right. Just after the present, will be a new enemy, bomb chucker. Use the box to kill him. Go right and jump up the ledge. Now crawl through the hole and you will find three boxes. Grab one and move right. On the other side of the boxes will be a cop. Kill him with the box and pick up another one. Crawl up the ladder and use the box to kill the army guy on the ledge above you. Move left and use the stack of four crates to jump up and reach the ledge on the right. Move all the way to the right across the ledges and grab the records as you go. On the far right will be a present worth twenty records. Snatch it and climb up the ladder for another present. Now go back down the ladder and back left across the ledges until the ceiling is super thin and there are two crates on the ledge. You can jump up through it here using the crates. Jump up and move right. A bazooka enemy will be above you. When you see a ladder, jump up to it and climb it for another twenty record present. Now go back down and go all the way to the left. Climb the ladder to the ledge with the bazooka guy. You will have to be very careful and jump up to the ledge when he is in-between shots. Directly in front of him will be spring boards that you can use to jump up o the ledge above him. Once on the ledge, grab a box and use it to kill the cop enemy on the other side. Do not grab another box. Instead, move right and make the jump up and across the gap to the next ledge. You cannot make this jump while holding a box. On this new ledge, you will find two more boxes. Grab one and walk to the top of the ladder. From here, you can jump to the right onto another ledge. This ledge has an army guy on it. Use your box to kill him and move right. At the far wall, duck and press A twice. You will fall through the floor and through one ledge. On this ledge, walk off the left side and you will see spikes on either side of you as well as a present and several records. grab the present for twenty records and get as many records as you can reach before going down the ladder. Drop down until you see another ladder, then go left, away from this new ladder. Jump up and climb another ladder and keep moving left. Keep moving left and down until you see a ladder with a rat at the bottom. Time it carefully and drop off when the rat is on the far right, then jump over the rat as it moves back left towards you. The next ladder to the right leads to a dead end, so ski it and jump up the stair and continue right. There will be a bazooka guy at the end of the corridor. He is hard to avoid, but you must since there is no box here. Jump over him and land on the ladder and take it up before he can shoot again. Move to the right. At the wall, you can jump up on a ledge, but do so carefully. It is a slippery ledge and you will go straight into some spikes if you do not duck instantly. Duck and crawl under and jump up on the other side to avoid even more spikes. Jump to the right. Instead of walking, jump across these ledges, since you do not slide when you jump but do when you walk. Go all the way right until you see a large wall of spikes. Jump right next to it then turn around and run and jump at the very end of the ledge and reach the small ledge with the tiny ladder on it. This is a very difficult jump and may take a couple of attempts. Thankfully if you miss, you shouldn't be in any danger, just go back to the large spike wall and try again. Move left from the tiny ladder and you will see another wall with spikes on it. Get up close to these and run right. You will need to jump to another ledge on the right. Use the ladder as a leaping point. When the top of the ladder is even with a ledge, it is just like the ledge has another brick in it. Jump from the ladder to the next ledge. If you miss, you will be back at the large spike wall. If you miss, jump again and hold left so you don't slide right into the spikes. From this new ledge, move right, keeping close eyes out for the spike pit at the end of the slippery ledge. Take the long ladder down. At the bottom of the ladder will be a spike pit. Hold left as you disembark to avoid it. Jump left again over another spike pit and you will see the end level goal! It is a microphone. Grab it and finally move on to level four! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 4 The Sewer (BBLVL4) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- You start out level four right next to two records on the left Grab them then jump up top the ledge above you, using the box as a leaping point. Grab the five records up here. If you go all the way to the right of the edge, you will see a new enemy, the box thrower. Go back to the left and drop down to where you started. Pick up the box and use it to kill the enemy. Grab the records. Now go back to where you started. There will be a small floor where you can drop through by holding down and pressing A. Do so and you will fall down to a nice, empty hallway. Move all the way right and against the fall wall will be a ladder. These ladders look different than in previous levels, so be aware of that. Climb up and avoid the rivet shooter and move right into the tunnel. You will come out into another passage way with another rivet shooter in it. Drop through the floor before the rivet shooter by holding down and pressing the jump button and move right, going underneath the rivet shooter. This will lead you to a large room with a box thrower. Jump over him using the same tactic as previous enemies and move right. Jump up to the ledge and go right. Grab the box and climb the ladder. Use the box to kill the enemy from the ladder and go right and take the next ladder down. At the bottom of the ladder, drop off and drop down below the ledge by holding down and A and you will fall quite a ways to a room with broken windows (isn't this supposed to be a sewer..?). Go left and you will find a rivet shooter. Duck his projectile and jump over him when it is safe and continue left. You can also drop down to the floor below and find a box. Grab it and walk right up the stairs back to the previous ledge and use the box to kill the rivet shooter. Go left and jump up the one high ledge and drop off the other side. There is a rivet shooter here as well. Avoid him in the same manner and go all the way left. Move one space from the far left wall and drop down through the floor. You should see a tube in front of you. Step into the tube and you will fall down. When you land, there will be a box thrower on your right side when you land, so duck as soon as you hit the ground. Move left, ignoring the box thrower. You will see a ledge with several records on it. There will be a present just below it. Grab it for twenty records, then take the ledge up, grabbing all the records as you go. Keep moving up. Watch out for broken records, as they take ten records from you. There are two. The one at the top you will have to crawl under to avoid. Drop of the ledge to the left once you get by the second broken record. You will be on top of a ladder. There is a heart off to the left. Just below it is a broken record. You should climb down the ladder and go left. Jump over the hole in the ground. There will be a spray paint guy here. Avoid him and take the ledges up to get at the heart. Take the ledges all the way up and slightly to the left. Drop down into an area with several records. There will be a rivet shooter on the left. Get what records you can and duck. Instead of jumping over the rivet shooter and risking injury, drop down by pressing A and you will fall through the floor. You will eventually find a ledge with two boxes if you keep going down. On the far left of this ledge is a box thrower. Use one box to kill him and grab the second one and go right through the small opening. Another box thrower is here. Kill him with your box. Drop off the ledge and go down. On the left will be several records if you can snag them during your fall. If you miss, don't worry about it. Go left at the bottom of the ramps. There will be a spray paint guys here. Follow him left while ducked and get him to shoot at you when he is just past the ladder. When e shoots twice, you have a window to jump up and climb the ladder. Let him walk right then drop off the ladder and go left. Drop off the ledge and go right. Use the boxes to reach the ledge with the records. Drop down and grab a box and kill the enemy on the right. Use the small ledges to reach the ledge behind the enemy. Move right and you will see a box. Grab it and quickly throw it at the rivet shooter. Move right. Use the ledges and jump up. When you see a box, grab it then jump to the ledge with the ladder. Kill the box thrower and grab a new box for your self. Jump up and to the right and continue walking with box in tow. Drop down off the edge and throw your box instantly to kill the spray paint guy. Grab the box where he was standing and move right. Jump off the ledge and you will land on another ledge. Move right and you will see a box thrower above you. Use your box to kill hi, then jump up to his ledge. On the small ledges, you can reach a heart. Grab it and jump to the right to find a room with a box and a big black looking hole in the background. Take the box and go back to the left. Drop down and go right. Drop all the way down until you see an emery. Kill him with your box and then go left. Go down the slide, then jump up to the ledge and go down the slide again. If you are quick, you can reach an area with a present and heart. On the third slide, you want to jump half way down and hold left. This will allow you to slide into small opening and grant you access. The present on the ground is a good one but the present right above the heart is bad. It will be tough to grab the heart and miss the present, but it is possible by jumping just to the left of it and moving right. Once you grab the good stuff, go right. Drop down and go right. There will be a box thrower. If you are fast, you can jump up and get to the ladder before he can hit you with his box. Do up the ladder and move right and take the next ladder down. Go right and use the tube to jump up to the ledge with the box. It sucks you up, so all you have to do is jump into it and hold right. Grab the box and jump down into the next tube. Move right. You will go through a few more tubes until you see a really long one. Jump into it and at the top you will find a box thrower. Kill him with your box, then grab all the records. Now take the next tube down and move right. You will find an extra life at the end of the tunnel. It is somewhat hidden within the background, so look carefully up against the far right wall. Go back up to where the box thrower was after getting the extra life. Take the tube at the top of the ledges and go up. A heart can be found if you jump up to the ladder. There will be a box thrower at the top, so you will need to take a box with you to kill him in order to gain the life without getting hit. Drop back down to where you were and go all the way right. Drop down the hole and go right. Keep moving through tubes and down slopes until you get to a room with a tube leading up to a box. Jump up through this tube and you will see several move tubes. Take these tubes up (grab the box if you need it). This is tough because you have to use the momentum from going out the last tube to reach the next one. It will take several tries. When you reach the top, there will be a box thrower. Kill him with your box then climb the ladder. Go left at the top of the ladder and you will see a box. Grab it and jump up to the next ledge, using your box to kill the spray paint guy. Now go right. Against the brick wall you will see a small ledge you can jump up to. Jump there and you will be right below a rivet shooter. Jump up and avoid him. grab the box behind him and kill him. Now grab the other box and walk left. There will be a box thrower here. Kill him with your box and behind him will be a gold record (the manual calls it a speaker). Grab it and you will move to level 5! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 5 The High Rises (BBLVL5) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level five is a tough one. Start out by going right. Grab a box and use it to kill an enemy a few steps to the right. Grab the records, then go back and pick up the other box. Return right and you will find an evil cop. Kill him with your box and continue right. Grab the records you see at the top of the barrel stack, then return left until you find a ladder. Climb the ladder and go left. Climb the small ladder to find some records and a present that gives you twenty records. Go back right and drop off to the ladder you were just at. Jump right at the top of the ladder to grab some records. Move right and jump the gap to find another ladder climb it. Jump up the beams to find some records that spell an H and a T (still trying to figure out if there is a meaning...). Grab these records then drop back down to where you were. Go left. Jump to grab the two records in the gap and you will fall back down a few steps. Go right and climb the ladder again and back up the beams to where the H and T were. Now go left and you will fall onto another beam with a box. Grab it and drop off the left. Keep an eye out for the evil cop. Kill him with the box. Jump back up and grab the two records above you, then return and go left. Climb the stairs and grab the records as you go. Duck and go to the right when you reach the top of the stairs. There will be a present that gives twenty records right in front of an enemy. Sneak in and pick it up while ducked so his projectile doesn't hit you. Go back left and climb the small ladder and use the box at the top to kill the evil cop on the right. Go right and grab the records. At the end of the ledge, drop off and duck. Crawl left and you will find another present in front of the same enemy as the one before. Grab the present for an easy twenty records then move back right. Jump onto the previous ledge and walk back to where you were when you were on the stairs. On the ledge above the stairs look to the left. There will be more chain link fence on which you can climb. Jump up to it and you will grab it by pressing up on the directional pad. Climb up until you see a rivet shooter on a ledge. You will have to get up to the ledge without being shot by the rivets. This is not easy to do. What you want to do is go to the section of three fence pieces in a horizontal line (it will be one square down from the ledge). Go to the far right and wait. If you stay low enough, the rivet shooter will walk back and forth. Don't go too high or he will stop and start shooting in your direction. Once he is all the way to the left of his walking path, move up and jump from the top of the fence. You will have enough momentum to gain the ledge. Jump immediately and you will gain ground on another fence, this time above the rivet shooter and you will be safe. From here go left to the small ledge and jump off. This will automatically take you to the next ledge above you. Walk right and be sure to jump OVER the broken records so you do not lose ten records on your bonus counter. There will be another rivet shooter on the other side of the broken records. You will have to jump over him by ducking and waiting for his two shots to go by, then quickly leaping over him and to the right. Walk all the way to the very edge of this ledge. There will be another ledge up and to the right. It is impossible to make this jump, but that is alright for now. Just jump as far as you can and you will fall. Make sure you fall on the right side of the skinny wall or you will go back to almost the beginning of the level. If you land on a platform, jump off and to the right. You should land at the bottom of several ledges with records (if you land on a ledge, that's fine). Grab all the records and work your way back up using the ledges. On the far left of every ledge is a spike trap, so do not touch the left side of the ledges. You know you will be at the top when you reach a ledge with an access hole on the right side to one record. Grab that record and move right. Grab the next few records as you go up the stairs. Climb the ladder at the far right wall. Go halfway up the next set of stairs and jump off to the right to avoid the spike traps on the ends of the ledges and to get the record. Climb the ladders and jump left when you reach the top, taking extra care to avoid the spike edges. Jump over the top of the wall, making sure you do not touch the left side where the steel juts out at you. You should now be on a ledge with a box. Do not pick up the box because it will hinder your jump. You now have to make one of the most difficult jumps in the game. You will need to jump off the far left edge and land on a new ledge. This is difficult because of the low ceiling and the fact that both ledges have a spike trap on their edges. It is likely that you will miss and hit the spike trap on the new ledge on your way down. If you do, climb back up the ladders on the right and try again. You need to jump from the very, very, very edge of the ledge. Getting a running start helps and you can run right through the box (or just pick it up and throw it). This takes skill, but it can be done. Once you make the jump, there will be an evil cop shooting at you. There is a box on this new ledge you can use, but if the cop comes too close, climb the vertical beam and wait for him to walk away before dropping back down and using the box top dispatch of him. Go left and use the ladder to climb up. Grab the records and keep moving up. When you see an enemy at the top, go to the right on the ledge below him and jump up and move right. He should miss you entirely since he is stationary. From the far right of the top ledge jump up and right and you will see a fence. Press up on the directional pad to grab a hold of it and move right. When you see two records directly below you, you can safely disembark and collect them. Jump right and grab a couple more. Now jump back up to the fence and use it to move right. You will have to hold up and right on the directional pad in order to stay attached to the small portion of the fence. Move over the wall and go to the right. Grab the records. Now go back and grab a box. Go down the ladder, keeping an eye out for a cop at the bottom. Use your box to kill him and gather the records to the right. Go down the next ladder and there will be a rivet man right at the bottom. A box will exist on the right side of the ladder that you can use it to kill him and not get hit if you are quick. Go left and go down the next ladder. There will be a fire directly under this ladder, so do not drop off straight down. There is also an evil cop here, so drop off to the left where the box it. Use it to kill the cop and be sure not to touch the fire. Go right and go down the next ladder. This will lead you to a couple of records. If you feel bold, go left and jump over the fire, avoid the spike traps and use the small ledge to get yourself several more records. If not (or if you do) go down the next ladder. You will fall off this ladder and into a giant black pit. The only way out is to hold down and press the jump button to fall through the floor. Do so and then take the ladder on the right down to find a few more records. Move left. Go up the small ladder then use the tiny ledges and jump back and forth on them to get out of the pit. Once at the top, jump left to the records. Going right only takes you back to the black pit. Go down the stairs left, then right. Grab the records on the ledges if you desire. At the bottom you will find a ladder and two boxes. Grab a box and go down the ladder. At the bottom, there is an enemy to the right, just off screen. Take one step and throw your box. Go back up and grab the other box. Go back down and move right. Move right and grab several records as you go. You will soon come to an open space with a floating platform and a barrel. Jump on the barrel, then onto the platform and ride it up. Once you reach the ledge at the top, there is a rivet shooter. Use your box to kill him and jump onto the ledge. Go right and take the ladder down to fins some records and three boxes. Grab a box and go back up and jump left off the ledge to another small ledge with two records. Wait here for a floating platform to come down and jump onto it. Ride it up. Take the floating platform all the way up and jump off. Using your box, kill the enemy on the right side. Grab the records. grab the box behind him and use the ladder in the middle to go up. Use this new box to kill the next enemy on the right. Grab another box from here. Grab the records then go to the left edge and wait for another floating platform to come into view. Jump on it and ride it up. Take it as high as it will go and jump onto the ledge. Walk right and you will see a wall. Jump to the top of the wall and you will grab the microphone! This completes the game! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Frequently Asked Questions (BBFAQS) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Q: What is this game? A: The Blues Brothers for the Nintendo Gameboy is an action platformer developed and produced by Titus Software that came out in 1992. It is based on a movie of the same name, which in turn is based on a Saturday Night Live skit from the late 1970s involving John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. There was an actual band, formed by these two individuals and involving several other people. I am rather unfamiliar with the real band and the Saturday Night Live skit, but I have seen the movie and I did find it enjoyable and comical, although rather dated and at sometime a bit drab. Q: How faithful is this to the movie? A: It is not in any such way. It is only the Blues Brothers in spirit and name. Q: Does Titus Software still make games? What other games have they made? A: No, Titus Software closed business sometime in the late 2000s. They made a plethora of games from the late 1980s until the mid 2000s. They were not responsible for many notable games, but they did leave a marginal mark on the video game industry. Superman 64 was the work of Titus Software, which is considered to be among the worst game ever made. They also released several Gameboy games in small quantities that are very difficult to find in today's collector age. This particular game is not one of them, though it is not an easy one to find. Q: Are there any passwords, cheats, or other such codes? A: I am unaware of anything except for a soft reset code. To use it, press A, B, Start and Select all at the same time. Other than that, I doubt anything else exists. Q: What do you think of this game? A: This game is a bit quirky. I found it to be easy once I slowed down and learned exactly which way to take. I tend to go in guns a blazing and always die easily. There are no bosses or cut scenes which make the game a bit drab. Essentially, this is very bare game. Fun for platformer lovers, a bit boring for anyone else who wants more substance. Q: I am stuck on X in level Y. Can you help me? A: It should already be covered in the step by step walkthrough up above, but if for some reason it isn't, please send me an e-mail and I will attempt to answer your question. Q: You screwed up in a section/strategy/area/itsprobablyjustatypo! Don't you spell check everything? A: No, I don't. There are bound to be mistakes throughout this guide. The only way they can be corrected is if you e-mail me and nicely explain to me where and how I messed up. Credit will be given where credit is due. My e- mail is at the beginning of this guide. Q: Where can I get this game? A: This game is not an easy one to find, but it is by no means rare. It can be had for as little as $5 US. Online websites that specialize in the sales of old video games such as eBay, Amazon, and Gamegavel are your best bets. Also, most cities have at least one retail store that specializes in older games. Pawn shops are also known to carry older games. Please respect these different retail outlets and purchase the game if you desire to own it. Just because Nintendo doesn't make money on the sale of old games doesn't mean other peoples' livelihood isn't invested in such sales. I cannot and will not endorse or support emulation of this or any other title and I will not relay any information pertaining to such practices. Q: Can I host this guide on my site? A: No. I do not allow anyone to use my guides without expressed, written permission. I do not give permission unless I am asked, specifically, about this guide. I do not like automated e-mails. I will most likely only allow my guide to be hosted on a small website, usually one centered around the game or system my guide is for. For more information, see the Copyright section of this guide, at the bottom. Use of this guide without my permission is considered theft and will be reported to the proper authorities. Q: How do I contact you about this guide? A: E-mail is the best way to do so. My e-mail can be found at the beginning or the end of this guide, just remember to take the numbers 123 out of it because they do not belong. I keep them there to prevent auto scanning websites from obtaining my e-mail address. I am not big on the instant messenger services any more, so it is unlikely that you can contact me that way. If e-mail is not an option, you can send me a private message through Gamefaqs message system. Q: What other guides have you done? A: Just simply click on the name Arguro at the very top or the very bottom (orange text in a black box) of this guide and it will take you to my contributor page. From there you can see all the different things I have contributed to Gamefaqs. Q: I really like your guides. Can I donate money to you in support? A: If you really want to, you can send a Pay Pal payment to my e-mail address which is at the top or bottom of this guide. Please understand that any donated money does not mean I will name you in my guide. It also does not mean I will do any special work for you and it certainly does not give you any rights to host this guide or publish it anywhere. I do not want the user to feel obligated to pay me in any means. This is a free guide for personal, private home use. I will not reject your offer to pay me, but I do not want you to feel it is necessary. If you do decide to donate to me, please only donate what amount you are comfortable with, even if it is a single penny. Once a donation is made, it is final and there will be no refunds. This is an odd question and I debated about adding it for a long time, but when I saw other FAQ authors had a similar question, I felt it would be a valid addition. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Version History (BBHIST) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Version 0.10 completed July 5th, 2012 at 11:43 am Mountain Time --Version included the foundation, copyright information, mechanics section as well as most of the first level walkthrough.
