INTRODUCTION G0100 =============================================================================== Welcome to Minesweeper for the Game Boy, a puzzle game by ARC Co. released in 1991. It was only released in Japan. Suggestions, comments or errors - tell me about it. Enjoy! =============================================================================== 02.) BASICS G0200 =============================================================================== At the start of the game you are being asked if you want to play 1-Player or 2-Player mode. 2-Player mode is only available via link cable so I am unable to help you with this. Ways to die: ```````````` * Time out: The timer will run down in seconds, when it's down to zero you lose. Does not seem to harm you in the Play Mode. * Miss: Hit a mine, instant death. The game also calls the bombs. Modes: `````` Play Mode: Random puzzles, with different sizes and amount of mines. 7-Missions: Pre-set puzzles, mission style. Edit Mode: Create your own puzzle sizes and set mine amounts. Open: A> A-Button: Clear B-Button: Mark B> B-Button: Clear A-Button: Mark Music: Toggle between On and Off. My suggestion is off. You might as well turn off the music on the GB to save battery life. Controls: ````````` A-Button: Clear / Mark a panel B-Button: Clear / Mark a panel D-Pad: Move the curser. Slide the difficulty left and right. START: Select mode, continue. Note: Switch the A and B button controls at the main menu "Open" setting Display: ```````` .------------------------------. |Time|Mines| :) | Level | |------------------------------| | | | | | Minefield | | | | | '------------------------------' Time: Amount of time left to solve the puzzle. Mines: Amount of mines left, flag panels to reduce this number. Level: Current level. Face: The smilie face changed according to your actions. :) Normal face when you play the game :o Shocked face when you click on a tile :( Unhappy when your time ran out or you hit a mine :D Super-happy face when you win the puzzle. Strategy: ````````` The objective of the game is to unmask all tiles in area that do NOT contain a mine. At first you will most likely guess a few spots but after that there is more to it. @ - Mine 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 - No. of adjacent mines |1@@ |23@ |1?2 --- In this example we can see that the 2 on the middle left says there is one more mine hidden, therefore the ? must be a mine. The 1 confirms this. |1?21 |1?2@ |1121 ---- Because the lower left 1 says there is a mine, the lower of the tiles in question is therefore one for sure. This leads to the conclusion that the upper ? cannot me a mine, as the numbers say there cannot be any more in the area. By this process of elimination, you can mark the tiles as mine or sweep them off as the game title suggests. Sometimes this is not possible, thus you can mark the panel as a ? if desired. It is very possible that it will come down to having to guess between two or three tiles rather than applying any tactics. So often there is just guessing involved? Well yes, but good guessing perhaps. Check this example: |?????? |?1??4? |?????? ------ Chances are 4 in 8, i.e. 50% that the fields surrounding the '4' have a mine in them. Compare that to the 1 in 8, i.e. 12.5% around the '1' on the left. Keep that in mind when the only choice left is to take a random stab into the field. Unfortunately, sometimes situations are unavoidable: -- -- |11| |1?| |??| |??| -- -- There is no way to know which ? is in actually a mine, and a guess is definitely required at this point. Good luck! Advanced Techniques: ```````````````````` Time plays a big part in the game, here are some tips to improve your speed and thus become a better player. * Open side and corner tiles first, as the chances of them being empty are higher compared to middle ones. Empty ones, as you might know, can open a large area to work with in a single click! * Marking tiles is not always required. Sure it helps, but you should be able to know which ones have mines after a while, without getting confused later. * Don't bother marking ?s, you might as well leave it blank. * Learn patterns, the game throws the same ones at you over and over which you should be able to recognize eventually and mark off quickly. =============================================================================== 03.) PLAY MODE G0300 =============================================================================== Choose between three levels, each having a different length and width. Beating a puzzle of Level 1 under the lowest difficulty rating will raise the level by one and continue with the score intact. The time is reset to 999. After completing difficulty ten, the puzzle simply restarts with the same level until you either hit a mine. If I am not mistaken, the time does not feature in this mode. It may run out and have no influence on your game whatsoever. Level 1: ```````` ___________________ |Area: 9x7 | |-------------------| |Difficulty | Mines | |-------------------| | 1 | 4 | | 2 | 5 | | 3 | 6 | | 4 | 7 | | 5 | 8 | | 6 | 9 | | 7 | 10 | | 8 | 11 | | 9 | 12 | | 10 | 13 | ------------------- Level 2: ```````` ___________________ |Area: 12x12 | |-------------------| |Difficulty | Mines | |-------------------| | 1 | 10 | | 2 | 12 | | 3 | 14 | | 4 | 16 | | 5 | 18 | | 6 | 20 | | 7 | 22 | | 8 | 24 | | 9 | 26 | | 10 | 28 | ------------------- Level 3: ```````` ___________________ |Area: 18x14 | |-------------------| |Difficulty | Mines | |-------------------| | 1 | 16 | | 2 | 20 | | 3 | 24 | | 4 | 28 | | 5 | 32 | | 6 | 36 | | 7 | 40 | | 8 | 44 | | 9 | 48 | | 10 | 52 | ------------------- Exit: ````` Takes you back to the main menu. Hi-Score: ````````` The game keeps a record of the highest score per level, regardless of which difficulty you started out with. As mentioned earlier, score is kept when moving from one difficulty to the next within a level. .---------------. |Panel | Points | | | | | 0 | 5 | | 1 | 10 | | 2 | 20 | | 3 | 50 | | 4 | 100 | | 5 | 200 | | 6 | 500 | | 7 | 1000 | | 8 | 5000 | '---------------' At the end of a puzzle, the score adds 5 points per mine not flagged, question marks also count as unflagged. Difficulty: ``````````` As can be seen from the individual tables above, each level can be set to have different amounts of mines. This makes the puzzle harder, but at the same time allows for higher scoring. By beating lower difficulty settings the game will automatically raise this with the next puzzle. =============================================================================== 04.) 7-MISSIONS G0400 =============================================================================== This mode takes you through seven missions around the oceans on the world map. The same strategy applies for these missions, only that in most puzzles there are uncovered tiles at the beginning. Therefore, it is slightly more helpful to get started. Time does not reset to 999 at the end of a puzzle. A mine that stays unflagged at the end of the level gains 5 seconds to the overall time. For example, if there are 10 mines left when the stage is cleared, one gets a bonus of +50 seconds on the clock. Each level solution outline is below. Here is the legend: Dim: Dimension of the puzzle, e.g. 4x4 = 4 lines horizontal, 4 lines vertical No.: Amount of mines in the puzzle. @ - Mine 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 - No. of adjacent mines *********** EDIT MODE G0500 =============================================================================== You set your own puzzles. Length: 2-14 rows Width: 2-18 columns Panel: automatic, 4-252 panels Bomb: 1-99 only, one panel will always have to be empty and very large fields cannot have too many mines then with the limit in place. Interesting fact: if you only leave one panel without a bomb it will always be on the top left corner!! 0_o Rock: 0-25 only, you cannot have more than 9% of rocks in any puzzle. Rocks are simply black visible squares covering tiles. For example: -- |1X| |@1| -- X is the rock, but the rest of the area is not affected in any way than having to disregard that square. Note: Rocks are only unlockable with a password, see the Passwords section for more details Password: After you have set a puzzle and beaten it, you will see the password for this particular one on the screen before the settings. Enter this if you want to play it again. For example: X1VKZ0J3 is: -------- |3@@@@@@@| |@@@@@@@@| -------- If you have input an incorrect password the game will make a loud alarm noise instead of showing the puzzle. Final note: Some invalid passwords have caused the game to freeze, so use them with care! =============================================================================== 06.)
