International Superstar Soccer Game Boy Developer: KCE Nagoya Publisher: Konami By: GammaBetaAlpha ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Table of Contents -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ How To Play [HELP] Donations/Amazon [DONT] Contact Info [CONT] ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- How to Play -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [HELP] International Superstar Soccer is a traditional football/soccer game that comes with most of the bells and whistles, playing sideways like with Nintendo World Cup, and has the full ten players on each team. Yellow cards and red cards can be attained by hitting opposing players not in possession of the ball, and offsides do exist. Play can be very automated - you could probably go a full game without touching anything for 95% of it, only having to make the occasional Free Kick or Throw In. You only have control over one player of your own team at a time, who you can move around, dribble, pass and kick a ball with, and steal or block a shot when on the defense. Controls -------- A: (Offense, Player has Ball Possession) Passes Ball to a Teammate. Use the D-Pad to toggle between teammates to pass the ball to (Kick-in, Throw-in) Player/Goaltender kicks/throws the ball into play (Defense) Team member in pursuit of opposing ball possessor does a simple steal B: (Offense, Player has Ball Possession) Shoots Ball at Net, Hold B to increase power of the shot. You can shoot from across the field. (Defense) Team member in pursuit of opposing ball possessor slides into the opponent, knocking him over Passing ------- If you pass a ball, control will switch to the new player in possession of the ball. However, it should be noted that the teammate you are passing to will not automatically catch the ball. Also, be sure not to double-tap A when you pass, as the game will interpret this as you wanting to pass twice, so when you pass it to your first teammate, he will turn around and pass it off to somebody else. Kicking ------- By pressing and then holding B before letting go while in possession of the ball, the player with the ball will perform a power kick. This is especially useful near the opposing net, but you can also use this to launch the ball up. However, I have not noted any way to do an overhead kick. If anybody knows for sure this is in the game and knows how to pull it off, please feel free to send me an email using the address at the bottom of this guide. Fouling ------- Fouling is a possibility to do in this game: to do it, you must hit a player on the opposite team while he is NOT in possession of the ball. Hitting somebody who is in possession of the ball shall just result in a free kick from the location where you hit him at. Substitutions/Change of Tactics ------------------------------- During regular play, press the Select button and you should open up a menu. Select the Change option on this menu, where you can substitute in new squad members or change your formation and tactics. Passwords --------- After every match in the International competition, you will be given a password (assuming you are not knocked out) that is up to 51 characters long. You can use this and input it on the 'Enter Code' screen on the Knockout or World Cup menus. Note you need to actually select a team and competition before you will see the Enter Code option, as for some reason it is not put on the front menu. --------- MAIN MENU --------- When first entering the game, you will have four different button icons to choose from. These are what each of them do. Open Game ---------- Found in the upper-left corner. A single 90-minute + extra time affair, where you can choose to play as any of 36 different countries, as well as choosing your opponent. Goal Kick --------- In the lower left corner of the main menu, with the goal net and Game Boy, is an option to play a goal competition. You may choose your own team and the opposing country, and you will alternate between a goal kicker and goaltender to play up to 5 times each. If you mathematically win early (get three successful shots and block your foe's first three shots), the mini-game ends right then. Controls -------- Found in the lower right corner of the main menu. Here, you can change the in-game length of each game (3 minutes, 5 minutes, or 7 minutes) as well as the difficulty level (Novice, Medium, and Expert). Competitions ------------ The upper-right corner of the main menu, this is by far the most extensive of the options available to you. International follows a mishmash FIFA format, using all the teams who made the 1998 FIFA Cup along with Portugal, Wales, Sweden and Australia. Select your team to play as and you will be put into a pre-set group of 6 (the composition of each group is always the same), and you will play 4 of the 5 other teams. The best four teams from each league along with a couple of fifth-placers will advance to a round of 24. Following that, you will play the other three times and the best 2 from each division along with a couple of third-placers will be slotted into a round of 16, where you will then play on in sudden death until you win the championship. ---------- MATCH MENU ---------- Prior to starting a match, you will be given some options, and you can also access these options during gameplay. Formations ---------- Here, you can change your squad formation, as well as the behaviour of your squad, between normal, aggressive, defense, etc. Member ----- You can rotate the squad members not active in and out of your squad here. Extended Match -------------- I am not sure what this option here does, unfortunately. If you know what the difference is between Extended Match and Gold.GL, please send me an email using the address at the bottom of this guide. Fouls ----- Here, you can toggle Fouls on or off. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~- Donations/Amazon -~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ [DONT] I don't really care too much about donations, but if you are feeling generous, feel free to send one via PayPal to gammabetaalphafaqs AT gmail DOT com Alternatively, if you ever order any items from Amazon.com, go to the link below. You do not have to buy anything right away, but (if you do not clear browser cookies often) any items you buy within the next 90 days will count as a 'referral order' to me, meaning I get anywhere from 4-6% as a referral/affiliate payment of what you ordered (ie. order $100 worth of stuff, I get $4-6 from Amazon.com) www.amazon.com/?&camp=212361&linkCode=wsw&tag=raofavigafa-20&creative=391881 Other than that, considering this FAQ is for an obscure old game, if you have any other obscure old games that you do not play anymore, consider sending them to me (I will even pay the shipping cost!). I write FAQs for plenty of obscure old games with no FAQs, and having a physical copy of the game (and even better, a manual) is superior to not.
