Polarium is a very fun puzzle game for the Nintendo DS, but it can get pretty hard sometimes. Hence this FAQ. I enjoyed this game very much (I always liked puzzle games), and I hope you will enjoy it too. I also hope you'll enjoy this FAQ and that it'll help you in your progress. As always, if you spotted a mistake, have something to add to the FAQ, got something to tell or simply have a question for me, just drop me an email at Kaas(dot)Bink(at)GMail(dot)com. IMPORTANT NOTE: this game features a custom mode, in which you can create puzzles, and share them with the rest of the world. If you have made some good custom puzzles, please mail (the adress is three lines above) them to me and give me permission to use them in this guide. In a future update I am going to add a lot of these custom puzzles, so please send me as much as possible. ======================== Contents - bbb ======================== In here you can find the different areas of the walkthrough. Press ctrl+f to open the search box, then enter the code you see next to the chapter to get there faster. I made the title's ASCII, wrote the introduction, Contents, Version History, Controls, a section about the Main Menu and the Game Basics. I wrote about the Challenge Mode, and started on the many puzzles of the Puzzle Mode. I also explained the Lounge and added a legal area. The remaining puzzles will come very shortly, so stay tuned! Version 0.75 - April 7, 2005 I added some more puzzles (they're up to puzzle 54 now), added a Special Thanks section, updated the Challenge section, added some small stuff throughout the FAQ and updated the Contents section. I also added information about the Versus Mode and some more about the Lounge. Version 0.8 - April 8, 2005 Nothing much, but I added some more puzzles (complete solutions up to puzzle 65). I'm trying to get all of them online as fast as possible. Version 1.0 - April 11, 2005 Added the rest of the puzzles, which means I've got every single one of the 100 puzzles covered, added the Puzzle Edit section, completed the Versus section and added some small overall improvements. The FAQ is done. Version 1.01 - April 24, 2005 Corrected some small mistakes after receiving a few mails. Version 1.02 - May 3, 2005 Added an improvement after another e-mail. It appears there's a different puzzle 31 in the Japanese version (which happens to be puzzle 71 in the PAL version), and I added it for completement's sake. Version 1.03 - June 24, 2005 Corrected some more mistakes after some more e-mails. I also requested the custom puzzles for a future update. Version 1.1 - July 7, 2005 Corrected another mistake (made a lot, apparently...) and added the first custom made puzzles! Keep sendin' them in! Version 1.2 - August 15, 2005 Added more custom puzzles and added a "contact me" section. ======================== Controls -ddd ======================== The controls of this game are extremely easy; you only have to use your stylus! No buttons are needed in this game at all. Just tap the touchscreen with your stylus to choose options and play the game. Tap the "v" to confirm a choice, and press the "x" to cancel a choice. Tap the upwards arrow to go back a screen, and tap the open book to go to a menu. Instead of tapping a book, it is also possible to press the "start" button. ======================== Main Menu - eee ======================== When you first start up the game, you'll be asked to view the game tutorial. Tap v to do so, or x to continue to the main menu. If this is your first game of Polarium, I strongly suggest you play the tutorial first. It's very easy and straight-forward, and it explains the game basics very good. When you're in the Main Menu, there are a few options. You can tap Challenge, Puzzles, Versus or Lounge (they're located at the four corners of the touchscreen. Simply tap one to see the options of these four types. When you tap one of these four options, the centre of the touch screen will show you further options. Look at the top screen to find out what time it is, if you're interested... Challenge: This is one the game's main modes. In it, you can choose between Challenge, Practice and High Scores. Tap any of these to play that type of game. More info in their respectively sections of this FAQ. Puzzles: This is the other main mode of the game. In it, choose between Puzzles and Edit. Here you can also choose if you want hints on your puzzles or not. Next to the word Hint are two symbols: if you tap the first one (the "snake"), you will be shown where to begin your line, and where to end it on the top screen (it takes a few seconds for this hint to show up). If you tap the second (the two diamonds), you will be shown the line you just made on the top screen (when it failed). You can see if they're active, as they will be yellow when they're selected. The hints are off when they're white. Choose the Puzzle options to begin playing the many puzzles Polarium has. In the beginning, only the first ten puzzles are available. Complete puzzles to unlock more puzzles. Tap Edit to create your own puzzles. You can create 100 puzzles here, and save them to your game. You can't create 100 puzzles from the start, but when you complete more of the stock-puzzles, you will gain more puzzle slots to save yours in. You can also complete the challenge mode to gain 100 save slots. Versus: It is possible to play against another friend with this game; you don't even need two cartidges (it is still possible with two cartidges though). If you're player 1, you can edit how may games you want to play and the time. Just tap your choice at the down-left corner. Lounge: there are four options here. Tutorial, Wireless Link, Settings and Credits. If you tap Tutorial, you'll be brought to the Tutorial I mentioned above. If you tap Wireless Link, you will be able to link with another Nintendo DS. More info on this in the Lounge section of the FAQ. When you tap Settings, you can adjust a few things. You can adjust the game's sound and music, turn the backlight on and off and you can erase all data. Be careful with that last option, because it's impossible to get back any data you erased. The credits can't be accessed at first (you'll need to beat the 100 stock puzzles first, or complete the Challenge mode). In all these subscreens, tap the upwards arrow to return to the lounge. ======================== Game Basics - fff ======================== All right, let's see how to play this game. It's isn't that hard, so you should be able to play pretty good soon. When you start playing, you'll see a square filled with black and white tiles, and a line of gray tiles around it. The general idea of this game is to make horizontal rows filled with tiles of one color only (black or white; it doesn't matter which color). When you created a horizontal row filled with tiles of one color, it will disappear. You can change the colors of the tiles ("flip them") by sliding the stylus across the tiles. By sliding I mean to drag the stylus across the tiles, flipping all the tiles it comes across. This sliding is very important to master, so I suggest you practise it a few times to become able to do it fluently. When you touch the first tile, a cube will come on it. By sliding the stylus to other tiles, the cube will roll to those tiles. You can only slide horizontally and vertically! Touch the cube at the end of your line to flip the tiles (they don't flip when you slide across them, but only when you touch the last tile). When you flipped the tiles in a way that there's a horizontal row (or more than one) that exist of one color, it will dissappear. It is best to use as less lines as possible to eliminate the rows. As I've mentioned before, there's an outer frame that consists of gray tiles. These can't be flipped. You can use this outer frame to extend your stroke and thus elimanate more tiles in one slide. This way, you can go around areas you don't want to flip. It is a very usefull (and usually necessary) technique. A few more pointers: - You can flip white and black tiles in the same line. Use this to more easily and faster get rid of some rows. - Instead of sliding the stylus across every tile, it is also possible to tap the tile you want the line to end at. This only works if the begin and the end of the line are in a straight line. This can be very handy if you slide across a lot of tiles. - When you make a mistake, you can backtrack to where you were correct. You don't have to start all over again. You can use the second pointer while backtracking too. - If you're line isn't quite right, instead of backtracking you can always tap the white cross in the blue box to the left or the right of the screen to start your line all over again. ======================== Challenge - ggg ======================== As I said, this one of the main modes of the game. Choose between Challenge, Practise and High Scores. Tap Challenge to begin playing a game of Challenge. I see this mode as a sort of Tetris game, but a bit different. Rows of tiles keep falling down, and when the rows have reached the red bar at the top of the topscreen, the game will be over. The idea is to eliminate as many as rows, and score as many points as possible. Sounds easy? Well, it isn't really... Again, you eliminate rows by making the horizontal rows have the same color. Do this by flipping the tiles with your stylus, as explained in the Game Basics section of the FAQ. Make sure the rows don't get too high, as the red bar is often closer than you think... If you want tiles to drop faster than thhey do, simply scroll down over the cancel icon (the white cross in the blue box at both sides of the touchscreen) with your stylus. On-Screen Information At the right side of the topscreen you can find information about the total number of lines you've completed thus far. At the left side of the topscreen can be found some information about the elimination you just did (that's the only time info appears there, after every elimination). It says how many lines you eliminated, the number of borders, the number of splits and the number your chain has. At the right side of the touchscreen you can see your current total score. You'll also find a cancel icon there (white cross in blue box). At the left side of the touchscreen can be found a book (at the top; it takes you to a menu (you can also press start to do this)). There's also another cancel icon at the bottom (white cross in blue box). There are a few ways to score points in this game mode. The most obvious is eliminating rows. The more rows you eliminate at the same time, the more points you score! There's a way to increase the total points you get for clearing one or more rows: borders, splits, chains and allclear bonuses are combined with the number of lines you eliminated to calculate your total points. The more of those in your elimination of lines, the more points you'll gain. Borders: this stands for the number of borders between black and white lines you have eliminated in one shot. Split: with a split is meant you've cleared more than line, but they are not above each other. There's another line (or more) between the lines you've eliminated. The number next to split indicates how many lines are between the eliminated lines. Chains: If you keep eliminating rows, you will create a chain. As long as you eliminate one or more rows with every slide or tap of the stylus, you will continue the chain. But as soon as one tap or slide doesn't eliminate a row, the chain will be broken and you'll have to start by zero again (the chain, that is). Try to keep the chain alive as much as possible! Allclear: This is a bonus you get only when the touchscreen is clear; there can't be any more rows left. This is very much possible when there aren't as much rows on the screen. A lot of the falling blocks can be eliminated in one stroke (like in puzzle mode). Try to keep this up, as it increases your points. Once there are multiple blocks, forget about this for a while, and wait until you eliminated some rows before trying this again. The Challenge mode consists of 10 levels; you can reach the next level by eliminating 100 rows. When you reach the next level (at least somewhere around there), a completely pink row will fall down. When it reaches the bottom, the entire field will be cleared. It is useful to let it hit the floor at the latest possible moment, and work around it first (by eliminating rows above the pink row; make sure it's easy to let drop to the floor at any time). This way, you can keep scoring points, and when you're in trouble, let it hit the floor and thus giving you a moment to breath. Once you eliminated one or more rows, it takes a few moments for the next rows to drop down in the empty space you just created (ie, if you have more rows on top of the ones you just eliminated). Make good use of this moment by already drawing a line. You cannot eliminate rows in this moment (you'll need to wait until they dropped down), but it is very well possible to ready your line. Simply draw a line in the newly created empty space where you expect the new rows to drop. Once they dropped, all you have to do is tap the end of the line to make rows dissappear. This takes some practise and insight, but once mastered, it is very useful. Tap Practise to practise the Challenge mode. It's the same as the Challenge mode, but there's one essential difference: You cannot die. The last block (which should've caused the screen to pass the red bar) will never fall down. It will fall down when you elimante rows, but it will never exceed the red bar. This way you can try as much as you like. The scores you get won't make it to the High Scores however, as this is only practise. Press the book to exit to the menu screen, where you can choose which level you want to play at (that is, if you made it that far in the normal Challenge mode) or tap the upwards arrow to go back to the main menu. Tap High Scores to view the High Scores you (or someone else) got on the Challenge mode. On the top screen are the scores and information, on the touchscreen you'll see a random hint. You'll view not only the top three of highest scores, but also how many lines each score got, the rank (E, D, etc.) and the "sign" of the top scorers. When you get an High Score, you can draw your own sign with the stylus to appear as a picture next to your high score (think of it as your name). Tap the feather on the paper at the right side to save your score. Tap the pencil to have the stylus functioning as pencil, tap the eraser to have it function as an eraser. Tap the trashcan if you don't want your score to be saved, and tap the blanc screen at the left bottom, then tap the screen to erase the picture you have drawn. ======================== Puzzles - hhh ======================== You can choose between Puzzles or Edit here. In puzzles the idea is to solve hundred puzzles in which you have to eliminate all the rows in a single stroke. It's pretty difficult sometimes, but is very fun to do. Choose edit if you want to create your own puzzles. Tap Puzzles to start the puzzle mode. You'll be taken to a submenu in where you can choose which puzzle you'd like to do. In the beginning there are only ten puzzles available. To unlock 10 more puzzles, complete all the puzzles you see. When you press the small arrow at the right, you can choose a custom puzzle (if you've made any, that is), or scroll between the stock puzzles (only if you have more than 50 of them). Pick (tap) the puzzle you'd like to do, then press the confirm icon (the v) to begin it. Finally... The moment everyone has been waiting for. The solutions of the many puzzles Polarium has to offer. There's no time limit on the game, so you can take as much time as you want. First let me show you how I'll write down the puzzles and the solutions. These are the symbols I use for the different colors of tiles. Gray tile: - White tile: o Black tile: # EXAMPLE: Let's just take a look at puzzle 1. The puzzle is surrounded by gray tiles, then we have two black vertical columns and two white vertical columns. Look down to see it how I wrote that down. - - - - - - - - # o # o # - - # o # o # - - # o # o # - - # o # o # - - # o # o # - - - - - - - - Now, as we can go over the gray tiles without any flipping, we need to start at a white tile, then follow the vertical white column, go over the gray tiles to the next white column, then follow that white column. You can see where you start and need to go, as I put it down as numbers. Simply begin at number 1, then go to 2, 3,... until the puzzle is done. Then tap the box (last tile) to solve the puzzle. Let's look at the solution. - - - - - - - - # 1 # 13 # - - # 2 # 12 # - - # 3 # 11 # - - # 4 # 10 # - - # 5 # 9 # - - - 6 7 8 - - See? It's pretty easy to figure out this way. There are three things left to say however. One: there are many, many different solutions to many of the puzzles. This is only one possible way to complete them. My solution doesn't even have to be the best there is. Two: sometimes, when you start a puzzle, the black and white tiles are inverted. I don't know how or when (it's happens at random), but when it does, simply look reverse black and white in your mind. The solution stays the same. Three: the first square in the solutions are the squares you begin with. The second squares are the solutions. I added a Q and a A to the correct squares to avoid confusion (q for question and a for answer). Good luck! I decided to add a little line of text to each puzzle. It makes this section of the FAQ look less boring. Don't worry; if I get a lot of hatemail about it, I'll remove it. =================== Puzzle 1-10 - hha =================== Puzzle 1, where the solution was already given for. We've completed every single puzzle of this mode. You'll get a nice smiley, followed by the credits. From now on, you can watch the credits in the Lounge area (if you hadn't unlocked it by completing Challenge mode first). =================== Puzzle Edit - hhl =================== Edit mode: in here you can create your own puzzles. You can save as many puzzles as you have unlocked stock puzzles (ie, if you only have acces to 60 puzzles, you can only save 60 homemade puzzles). To create a puzzle, simply tap a number to which to save your puzzle to. The white numbers are puzzles you already made (but you can always come back to edit them). Tap a number, the tap "Create" at the bottom (the right square, next to "Password"). Tap the "v" to begin. There are three options in the edit mode; size, tiles and answer. you can choose between them by tapping them (the three blocks at the right side of the screen). In the topright corner you can also see what number you are going to save to. Tap the book in the upper left corner to return to the previous menu (be aware this doesn't save your puzzle). Tap the upper square first (Size), then touch the play area to determine the size of the puzzle. When you do this, the puzzle will also reset the white and black tiles, so be sure to do this option first. The minimum size of the play area is 16 squares, the maximum size is 100 squares (included the gray tiles). The second option (Tiles) will let you flip tiles. Simply tap a tile to flip it, you don't have to draw a line. It is impossible to have an entire horizontal row of the same color. Once you're done creating your puzzle, tap the third option (Answer) to give the solution to it. Just use one stroke to solve the puzzle, just like in the Puzzle Mode. Once you did it, the screen will say "CLEAR" and you'll be given the option to overwrite the puzzle data. Tap "v" to save the puzzle, tap "x" to don't save it. Once your puzzle is done, just tap the book to return to the previous menu. When you're in the menu with your custom puzzles, you'll notice there's another option. It's the "password" option, and it's located next to the "create" option. Select a puzzle by tapping it, then tap the "password" option to go to a new screen (well, after you confirmed with tapping "v"). On the screen you'll see a password. You write this down and give your own puzzles to friends. This is a very nice option, as there already many custom made puzzles online. If you want to get a custom made puzzle from someone else, you can enter the password on that same screen (make sure you pick an empty slot, as it will overwrite the selected puzzle). Just tap the numbers at the bottom to enter the password, and tap "v" when you're done. If done correctly, it says "password okay" and the game will ask you to overwrite the previous puzzle data. Tap "v" and you've got yourself a shiny new puzzle! =================== Versus - iii =================== With Polarium, it is possible to play a multiplayer game with only one cartidge. It is a bit easier with two cartidges, but not everybody knows someone with this game. The multiplayer is pretty fun to play, but has a few different rules. How to start a multiplayer game: 1 cartridge multiplayer: make sure the player without the cartidge has the polarium demo downloaded. Look below in the Lounge section (by Wireless Link) to see how to do this. Now tap on Versus (in the left down corner). First, you can select how many games you want to play, and the time of the games. Simply tap the option of your choice. Then, tap Versus (in the centre of the screen) to begin. The screen will say "Waiting for opponent...", so let the other player select "Versus" on his main menu. You're ready to go! 2 cartridge multiplayer: It's the same game, but you don't need to downlaod something first. Both players must tap "Versus" on the main menu, then "Versus" in the centre of the screen and a connection will be made automatically. Player one still needs to choose the number of games and the time of it though (only player can choose this). How to play a multiplayer game: The first thing you need to do, is turn your DS 180 degrees clockwise (as indicated by the on-screen information). Than tap the "v" and you're ready to go. On the left screen is your own game, on the right is your opponent's screen. Keep a close eye on your opponent's screen at all time! Every time you complete a row, it will be send to your opponent (sometimes in the same, but just as often in another shape; the number of rows are always the same, just the place the tiles are in will sometimes change). You win a round when you clear your screen, or when you have the least rows when the time runs out. Use the skills you gained in Challenge and Puzzle mode to defeat your friend! Of course, in a multiplayer game, there are some ways to annoy your opponent. You'll notice you see some question mark tiles (with a blue and white color) on your screen; when you eliminate a row which has such a tile in it (you don't need to flip the question mark tile itself, but it doesn't matter if you've selected them either), you are able to use the attack tiles, located on the right on your screen. There are five different types of attack tiles, and you get then completely random. Simply tap on them to use them. You know they are in use when they blink, they'll stop blinking when their effect has weared off. It is possible to use multiple of these attack tiles at the same time. Nuisance Item: this is the completely blue tile. If you tap it, it will effect the rows you elimante for about 15 seconds. Every row you eliminate in these about 15 seconds, will cause a completely blue row to transfer to your opponent's screen. These blue rows will only dissappear once every adjoining tile is eliminated. Fast Transfer Item: this is the orange tile with the arrow pointed to the right. Once used, it speeds up the transfer of tiles you send to your opponent. It lasts for about 15 seconds. Slow Transfer Item: this is the green tile with the arrow pointed to the left. Once used, it slows down the transfer of tiles your opponent sends to you. This one lasts around 15 seconds. It's basically the opposite of the Fast Transfer Item. Outer Frame Ban Item: it's the tile with the big red cross through it. Once used, it prevents your opponent from using the outer frame (the gray tiles) for around 15 seconds. Flip-All Item: it's the purple tile with the black and white arrows on it. Once used, it will flip all of your opponent's black tiles to white, and all white tiles to black. Sometimes, in the middle of a match, the connection will get lost. Once the connection is broken, the game will terminate automatically. Just restart again. =================== Lounge - jjj =================== This game mode consists of four options: Tutorial, Wireless Link, Settings and Credits. Tutorial: By tapping this option, you can play the tutorial again. It's the same one you are presented at the beginning of the game. It consists out of 7 steps, and are very useful. Everyone should play it at least once. In the tutorial, look at the topscreen for information and use the touch screen to follow the instructions. The sections are (chronologiccaly) Step 1 (in which touching the icons is explained), Touching (in which touching is practiced), Sliding (in which the sliding with the stylus is explained and practised), Tiles (in which eliminating rows is explained and practised), Outer Frame (in which you'll be practicing with the gray tiles), Black & White (in which you'll be practising with the flipping and eliminating) and Practise (in which you'll be getting continous puzzles to practise with). Once you've completed all the 7 sections, you can come back anytime and choose any section again. Wireless Link: Tap it to come in the next menu, in which you can send the Demo of this game to another DS, send puzzles to another DS or receive puzzles from another DS. Simply tap the red button next to the option you want. Polarium demo: tap this option to send the demo to a friend. Make sure the other DS is turned on, and select download play in the DS' main menu to make the DS search for downloadable software. Once it has found the demo, tap it, then tap yes to start downloading it. It'll be finished in a few seconds, and it'll start up automatically. Your own DS will confirm it has been send. The demo consists out of a tutorial (the exact same one as on your own game), 10 puzzles and a versus mode. Custom Puzzles: here you can send and receive homemade puzzles. Make sure the receiving DS has selected "receive custom puzzles" in their own Lounge (yes, you'll need two cartidges for this). If you're receiving, you'll need to select in which spot you want to save the new puzzle. For this, press the - and + symbols next to the number to select a space (you can look at the puzzle already stored in that place on the topscreen). When you're sending a puzzle, simply select which one you want to send by tapping the - or + button next to the number. Look at the topscreen to see which puzzle you're about to send. Tap the red button to send it. Settings: There are a few options here. You can adjust the music and the sounds of the game by tapping the yellow bar (tap to the left to make it softer, to the right to make it louder). Tap the yellow block next to Backlight to turn the DS' backlight on or off. By tapping the white block next to Erase Data, you can erase the data of the game. Think twice before doing this, as you can't get it back once erased. You'll be asked to confirm this first, just in case you accidently tap it. Credits: The credits are inaccessable in the beginning. Beat all 100 Stock Puzzles or complete the Challenge mode to see the Credits. I must say they are just credits on one screen, so don't expect anything cool here. =================== Custom Puzzles - kkk =================== As you probably know by now, this game gives you the possibility to create your own puzzles. I've described how this work in section Puzzles, Puzzle Edit (hhl). Look there if you haven't read it yet, because you will need to know how the password function works. Now, if you happened to finish all the 100 puzzles in the game, played your friends via wi-fi and played the Challenge Mode until your eyes hurt, I've got some good news for you. I've collected even more puzzles for you! I made some of these myself, but I also got some mailed to me and given on the Polarium messageboard on GameFAQs. If you happened to make some of these yourself, please mail them to me so I can put them in the FAQ. I will not give solutions for these puzzles. Some of them will be very easy, but there are some pretty hard ones. Good luck and have fun with them!
