Term Definitions Grid The container that holds the cells Cell Single square were only one number may be entered Cube A 3x3 group of cells Column Vertical line containing 9 cells Row Horizontal line containing 9 cells Puzzle A Grid with numbers on it arranged in a precise way Timer On all Sudoku and Kakuro puzzles, the timer counts up. You have an infinite amount of time (or likely about 99 minutes) to solve each. When selecting one of the puzzles, it will display your best time and the day you last played the puzzle. Your best time will also be displayed while playing a puzzle. The first time you play a puzzle, the best time will be set to an average of how long it should take you to complete the puzzle. Saving A Game While playing a Sudoku or Kakuro puzzle, press Start and choose 'Back to menu' and your progress will be saved. You can only save one puzzle. If you begin another puzzle, it will ask you if you want to clear the saved progress. To return to the last game you were playing, tap 'Continue Game' on the Main Menu. Actual Puzzle Count Sudoku: 20,000,483 total puzzles The game lists 105 puzzles for each of the 5 difficulties of Sudoku, but Easy and Medium each replace 9 puzzles with rewards while Hard, Pro, and Sudoku X each replace 8 puzzles with rewards. This brings the total to 483 puzzles in these 5 difficulties. Not the easily assumable 525. When you complete each difficulty level (except Sudoku X) you are rewarded with 5 Million puzzles in that difficulty range. Kakuro: 315 total puzzles The game lists 105 puzzles for each of the 3 difficulties of Kakuro, and there are no rewards. Elsewhere in this document, I will refer to the counts as they do in the game by including the rewards as puzzles. Tips for Entering Numbers The in-cell writing system is great and I rarely use the buttons to enter numbers. Even when I'm at the bottom of the screen and have to cramp my numbers or partially write them - it can still interpret my scratches very reliably. However, if you're having any problems entering numbers I've found these entry methods to be reliable: 1 - Single vertical line. Can be as short as a sideways dash (-). Don't put a tip on it or the game may think it's a seven. 2 - Looping the bottom can cause problems. Draw the letter Z, or make a backwards 5 like the 2 you would see on a digital clock. 3 - Sideways letter M (upper or lowercase / curved or sharp). 4 - Draw the uppercase letter L, then bisect the lower horizontal line with a vertical line twice the length of the vertical line of the L. Strangely enough, a backwards letter Z will result as a four. 5 - Both the letter S and a digital clock 5 work fine. 6 - A clockwise spiral starting from the center. 7 - It can sometimes be confused for a one. Put a horizontal line through the middle of it and it works every time. 8 - Draw a circle and cut it half with a horizontal line, or make the standard circle/square sitting on top of another circle/square, or a sideways infinity symbol. 9 - If you don't close the top circle, it can sometimes be interpreted as a seven or a four. Drawing the lowercase letter g always works. What Is Kakuro? If you've played Picross DS, then you know what this is. Except that it doesn't draw images. You're given an odd shaped grid, and told what sums each row and column must add up to be. Then you fill in the numbers. In this version you can click the sums to see a list of all possible number combinations that could add up to be the sum, and each number that is currently in that row or column is highlighted in that list. The difficulty doesn't get much harder in Hard. The simplest trick is to solve the sums in ascending order working around the outside of the puzzle to the center. Don't close the lid or turn off the DS until you've exited Challenge mode or your scores and averages won't be saved (unless you've just made a high score). > Subtract Unlock by completing the first 5 Easy Sudoku Puzzles. Rule 1: Drag the second highest number to the highest number. Rule 2: Repeat Rule 1 until complete. * Rule 3: Break Rule 1 if there are only same-number pairs on the grid. Start by make your lines around the outside and work your way to the center. Be mindful to go around the numbers that can be connected by a direct line. Applying these rules and adding an observance for a tendency to solve in descending order nets me between 25-55 in a row. The difficulty is random and partially depends on your logic and speed. You have 30 seconds, so keep trying, and don't be afraid to draw over previous lines. Erase the board as a very last resort so you don't loose the time it will take you to redraw what's already there. Around puzzle 45-50, they'll step up in difficulty a bit. You'll find it better to draw the short lines in the middle and then connect the crazy pair that's far away. You'll definitely have to draw over lines you've created before and re-path them. Stay away from the clear button. By puzzle 70, you will have pretty much figured out all of the logic of the game and you'll start to see puzzles you've played before. > Shuffle Unlock by completing the first 50 Easy Sudoku Puzzles. This game is often played with images instead of numbers. You're given a grid of 9x9 positions, with only 8 squares filling those slots. Each are color coded and numbered 1-8. If a square is beside the free space, you can click the square to move it there. The object of the game is to line up the numbers as: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 > Choice Block Unlock by completing the first 15 Medium Sudoku Puzzles. You're given a Sudoku puzzle that is complete except for one 9x9 cube, but you're also given three 9x9 cubes to choose from and in 30 seconds you have to choose which one of them completes the puzzle correctly. Scan the choices for similar horizontal or vertical patterns of 2 or 3 numbers. For isntance, if you were given: 1 5 7 1 5 7 7 6 1 3 8 9 4 3 8 9 5 3 2 6 4 2 6 9 2 4 8 you would notice the two cubes with 1 5 7. Quickly exclude the third cube and focus on the remaining patterns in the two that are similar. The lowest row 2 6 4 and 2 6 9 have two numbers that are different. Scanning the puzzle grid on the intersecting column and row for those two numbers would likely show you which cube to select. As you progress, it becomes slightly more difficult and the patterns are more complex. Remember to look for vertical patterns and two digit pattpers. If you can average 10 seconds validating each of the three given solutions, you'll do well. If you make one mistake, the game is over and you have to start from the beginning, so I find it useful to wait until the last second to make a choice. The screen fades to red in the corners, so it's easy to know when you're about out of time. > High Sum Unlock by completing the first 29 Medium Sudoku Puzzles. Another 30 second Sudoku-style freezny. The grid has random numbers in certain 9x9 cubes and you have to select which one has the highest sum. As with Choice Block, wait until the last few seconds to choose one.
