Even so, I found this game really easy to pick up and to play through. It's made up of puzzles and mini-games that you play to win items to decorate your home. The more items you have and the more pleasingly you arrange them, the more Ochakens will come to your home. As you win items, you get new rooms for your home. It's similar to Nintendogs but the differences are striking- the dogs and cats all have names and if you don't call them by said names, they will be sad and leave your home. At risk of overdoing it, I am including everything I can possibly think of and anything not in English. If you've played imported games before, lots of this will be familiar or really easy to figure out. If you haven't, then I think I might just have covered every possible angle. I am not including a full translation of the story, as I've imposed on my friends enough to translate things for me and you don't really miss anything by not reading it. There are lots of pictures and good use is made of both screens. -E.P. Part 1: Getting Started Turn it on: The First Things You See The first screen you see after you select the game from the DS main menu will be a blue walled room where all the Tea dogs and Cats are hanging out -Ochakens will henceforth be referred to as Tea dogs and Tea cats. -A flashing stylus will appear on the touch screen. Touch it to continue. You will then see a start-up menu. To begin the game, touch the icon with the green Tea dog in front of a house in dead centre of the screen. The Main Menu Screen in Detail: Each Icon Explained Item List- The top icon with the green dog in the drawer is a summary of your accumulated items and prizes from the vending machines, which will be explained thoroughly later. Drawing Game- The icon in the top left corner takes you to a mini-game where you have to trace the Tea dogs on the touch screen and the game rates your drawing skill. Very cute! Mini Game Practise Area- The icon in the lower left corner with the green Tea dog and the pink Tea cat playing cards contains all the mini-games you need to play in order to win items. This is just a practise area. To select the game you want to play, just tap the card in the centre of the screen and use the arrows on either side to move through the menu. After you chose the game, you can see the name in English somewhere on the screen. Exit- To exit from this menu, there is a red rectangle in the lower right corner. Tap it to return to the main menu. Multiplayer Mode- Single card download play. The icon in the lower right corner with the green Tea dog and the telephone is your multiplayer option. You can only play the mini games with a friend, as far as I know. Story- The icon in the top right corner with the green Tea dog watching TV is the story. It's all in Japanese. Pause, Quit, Save, Misc. Options- To pause, press start. You will see a menu with two choices. The top is continue, and the bottom is quit. Generally when confronted by options to continue, touch the left, top or first option and the second to go back or quit. I will tell you if and when this does not apply, and if you find one that I miss, please email and tell me about it! To Begin: Touch the centre icon to begin the game! After touching the left red bar on the window that appears, you will see a screen with two tealeaf shaped icons in the centre. This is important! The left icon with the green Tea dog in the empty room means "start from the beginning" and if you select it after you've played, you lose your saved information. The right icon with the furnished room is to continue from where you were. To Go Back: The red arrow in a circular shape icon in the upper right corner is "back". Choose Your Main Dog: Next, the game will take you to choose your dog. A complete list of the dogs and cats names and descriptions is in Part 5. The dog you chose will always come to your house. If you want to change your dog, you can do it by going to the park in the "town's" main menu. I will explain this menu momentarily. After you chose your dog, you go to your house... I think you do anyway. I was so excited when I started playing that I am not totally sure if it takes you to your house. Your Room: At the start of the game you have one room and no items to decorate it, so you need to go out and start getting items. The House Menu Touch the tealeaf icon in the upper right-hand side of the touch screen and you will get a menu with the following on it: Menu Tabs: 1.The first one with a little red and white thing that looks like a house takes you out to the town. 2.The second with a brown Japanese teacup is a list of all of your items. 3.Third with a little black microphone lets you "talk" to the dogs. Call them by their names and they will be happy. See Part 5 for more information. 4.The fourth with a little black arrow lets you move between rooms in your home. You will need this later. 5.The fifth takes you to your vending machine prizes. 6.The sixth with the small white and grey circle is "save". When saving, the first window is save, press the left red bar to save, the second window that appears asks if you want to return to the main menu. Press the left bar for "yes" and the right for "no". You can also access "save" by pressing start. 7.The seventh and final tab is for moving your camera. It's easier to use the D-pad to move the camera in the desired direction. Top Screen Information Summary: When you are in your room, the top screen will show you which dogs and cats are in your room along with the date, time and the number of items you have out of 250 and your progress in completing the game in percentage form. The Town Map In the town, there are six stores you must visit to win items for your home. You touch the store you want to visit, tap the item you want to play for and play though the mini game to win it- more on this in Part 3. The Town 1. Electronics and Home Appliances 2.The Furniture Store 3.Interior Design Store- wallpaper, carpets and similar. 4.The Gachapon Store-with vending machines where you can use the coins you win after some mini games to buy small Tea dog prizes. 5.The Garden Centre 6.The Toy Store 7.The House wares store with teacups, floor pillows and houseplants. 8.The Town Centre- in the centre of the town map with what looks like a big Christmas tree is the town square. You can find all the Tea dogs and cats here. To Change Your Main Dog or Cat If you want to change the dog or cat that is always in your home, pick the one you like, touch it and then touch the blue button in the upper left corner. Two pink buttons will appear in the lower, centre part of the screen. Chose the left button and you're done. As far as I can tell, there is no penalty for doing this. Part 2: Item List I am not quite finished the game at this point, so my list is incomplete. All you have to do to open new items is win the ones that are available when you enter the store. When you come back, new items are open. Electronics Store Clocks and Lamps: Blue shaded light Round-bulb light Old-fashioned alarm clock Digital clock Cuckoo clock ??? ??? ??? Othello Blackjack Bowling Connect the Tiles Daifugo Hide and Seek Hula Hoop Game Jigsaw Puzzle Memory Old Maid Page One Poker Rhythm Game Sevens Slider Puzzle Red Light, Green Light Starting All Games -After you've selected the item from the store, you will be taken to the mini game you have to play to win the item -The first screens you see explain the rules to the game, in Japanese -To skip these screens hit the button in the lower left corner to continue to the game -If you don't like or can't win any game, quit and come back to it later, sometimes it will change to another game! Mini Game Selected Rules, Commands and Hints I have decided not to include a full set of rules for each game, as they're easy to figure out if you don't already know them. I will include which buttons are useful. Also, there is no penalty for losing any mini game, so just keep playing until you win. Air Hockey - Use the touch screen to control your puck -No special rules Hints -The computer will usually follow your lead when it comes to speed, so slide your puck faster or slower depending on how much of a challenge you want -Old or well used DS's may have some less sensitive areas on the touch screen, so be aware of this Black and White - Use the touch screen to place your pieces -No special rules. Hints -The computer player gains skill as the game progresses, so don't always expect an easy win Blackjack - Use the stylus to "hit" or "stand" -To "hit" or to "stand" use the two buttons in the lower left corner of your touch screen -The top red button is "hit" and lower red button is "stand" -No special rules. Hints Nothing really, but I hit on a 14 when I feel lucky. Bowling -Use the stylus to "throw" your ball down the alley and score -No special rules Hints -Use the lines of the rainbow on the alley to line up your shots Connect the Tiles -Use your stylus on the touch screen to connect the matching pairs of blocks -You cannot cross tiles when matching Hints -This is easy! Daifugo -Use your stylus to select the cards you want to play on your turn -The object of the game is to get rid of all your cards -Select 1 card or up to 5+ cards of the same number value and play them by pressing "OK" -Place your cards or pairs in ascending or descending value -The Joker can join any cards you chose -The cards values in this game are 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 ,10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace, 2. -The computer chooses ascending or descending value -You will always go first...in my experience -The button below "OK" is "Pass" -If your cards do not match the sequence, hit "Pass" Hints -Get rid of your mid level cards first -The Joker can help you win the game, so save it if you've got it. -If you're still unsure of the rules, try to play the cards you have -Select the cards you want and hit "OK" -If nothing happens, you can't play those particular cards Hide and Seek -The dogs and cats you need to find will appear in a line on your top screen -The dog or cat you need at any given time in the game will be slightly below the line of dogs and cats -When that particular dog or cat peeks out at you on the touch screen, tap it with your stylus to "find" it -You have a time limit, shown on the touch screen -You can make a few mistakes...usually, in my experience so far. Hints -Make sure you are familiar with all the dogs and cats to win the game quickly Hula Hoop Game -Use your stylus to throw the red hula hoop onto one of the 3 dogs or cats who appear on your top screen -Each time you successfully get 5 hoops on one dog, you get 100 points -You need more points to win as the game goes on -Your score will appear in the upper right corner of the top screen -Your time remaining will be counting down in the upper left corner of the top screen -If one of the dogs or cats lies down and goes to sleep, you can't throw hoops onto it, so try another one Hints -Harder is not necessarily better when it comes to throwing the hoops -Practise a bit to find the perfect throwing strength -You can miss as many times as you need to, there is no penalty Jigsaw Puzzle -Use your stylus to put the puzzle together -If the pieces are overlapping when you place them on the board, you will hear a warning sound and you will not be able to pick up another piece until you move the first one -Your time limit will count down on the top screen Hints -These are really easy to do, enjoy! Memory -You go first, to turn over 2 cards -If they match, you keep them and you can continue until you make a mistake -Beat the computer to win the game Hints -The computer can be very, very lucky sometimes. -Another easy mini-game Old Maid -Use the touch screen to play your cards -No special rules Hints -Nothing special here, just play until you win...or use the quit and come back later trick. Page One Note: I really, really do not like this game. I almost never win it. -Use your stylus to choose the card you want to play and tap it, the computer will take it and put it down -To win, place the highest card in the suit as shown by the card on top of the pile Hints -You have to win several rounds successfully to win this game and I always seem to get bad cards, this could just be my luck -Use the quit and come back later trick Poker -Use your stylus to select the cards you want to play -No special rules Hints -If you can play poker, you can win this game, the computer is not, usually, any more lucky than it should be - I don't play poker, but I can beat the computer Rhythm Game -Tap the centre of the tambourine on your touch screen, as the tambourine icons follow the music on the top screen- -When the hands clapping icons appear, clap your hands over the microphone or make a loud "dat!"-sounding noise into the microphone -If the container at the end of the top screen is full of water, you are doing well -You can't pause or quit this mini game once it starts Hints -For the microphone on a DS, I find it easier to clap, if I try to make noises instead, I miss more than I should -I can't speak for the DS Lite microphone, so please do experiment and find out what suits you Sevens -Use your stylus to select the card you want to play and "toss" it in an upwards motion -If you make a mistake, a warning will sound and your card will be rejected -No special rules Hints -Nothing really, just play until you win Slider Puzzle -Use your stylus to move the puzzle pieces so that you can slide the biggest piece out through the opening in the bottom Hints -Keep an eye on your time limit which appears on the top screen -These are so easy to do! Red Light, Green Light -Move your stylus in a circular motion anywhere on the touch screen to move your dog forward -If the other dog standing at the tree turns around sees you moving, you will be sent back to beginning to try again -If you make it to the tree and touch the other dog without him/her seeing you moving, you get a point -Get the number of points that will appear in the upper right corner of the touch screen to win -Your time limit counts down in the upper left corner of the touch screen Hints -Don't even breathe on the touch screen when the other dog is turned around or you will be sent back to the beginning -It doesn't seem to matter how fast you move the stylus, your dog will always move at the same pace Part 4: Why This Game is Not Like Nintendogs -You do not feed, water, or bathe the dogs and cats -You do not take them for walks -All cats and dogs have names and if you do not call them by those names, and pronounce them properly in Japanese, the dogs and cats will be sad and likely leave your room -There are no contests -As you win the mini games and get items, you gain a second floor, an attic and a garden for your home...I think this happens every 50 items -The coins you win can only be used in the Gachapon store to buy items from the vending machines -The dogs and cats can't learn tricks -The dogs and cats interact with almost all the items and toys directly, whether looking at a flower in a pot or playing with a ball -The dogs and cats will come and go, sometimes purely on whim -There are some of the same toys as Nintendogs, but in name only, ex. The balloon, in Ochakens, the dog can ride on the balloon -There is no penalty for leaving the game for days at a time. I have left it for 4-5 days and the dogs have come back to my house -You can't sell or trade items -There's no "bark mode" -When you have all 250 items, you've cleared the main game -I have yet to find any secret/hidden areas, I'll keep you posted Part 5: Dogs and Cats Names and Pronunciations I am going to try and explain this as clearly as possible. Try to stress each syllable in the name equally, instead of blending them as you would in Engish. Green Tea dog- Ryouku pron. Lee-o-koo Note: I have a hard time pronouncing this one, even with help from Japanese people Red Tea dog- Earl pron. Er-lu Black Tea dog- Lon pron. Same as the name in English Beige Tea dog- Chai pron. Same as Chai, like the tea, in English Pink Tea dog- Hana pron. Ha-na, "Ha" like a laugh, "na" like "banana" Brown Tea dog with round ears- Caffe pron. Ca-fey, like "cafe au lait" in French Pink Tea cat- Sakura pron. Sa-kew-ra Purple Tea cat- Ran pron. Just like the English word Yellow Tea cat- Min pron. Mee-new Green and brown Tea cat- Sou pron. Like "sew" in English If you make a mistake, or the dog or cat doesn't recognize you, just keep trying and eventually you will get it. Good luck!
