Race and battle with up to eight karts at once, regardless of whether or not everyone has a Game Card. The all-star cast includes Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Wario, Bowser, and Toad. With courses drawn from every Mario Kart game - Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Mario Kart: Double Dash - players may tour many of their favourites as well as all-new tracks and battle arenas. The game has a new dimension of fun, since players can battle others around the world by connecting to Nintendo’s new wireless gaming service, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, via Wi-Fi. Mario Kart DS will feature Single Player and Multiplayer. In Single Player expect the classic modes from Previous titles including Grand Prix and Time Trial. Also, as a brand new addition to the Mario Kart series, Verus Mode will now be accessible by yourself, computer- controlled characters now becoming your opponent. This also goes with Battle Mode. This is my first attempt at an FAQ so bare with me. ---------------- About this Guide ---------------- Work started on this Guide shortly after E3. With the release of the game I have been labouring over getting everything sorted and neatly grouped up so it represents at least some form of Walkthrough/ FAQ. What you see now is the collective gathering of information over 6 months and now the addition of all the goodies from the game itself. Should be up before Christmas. /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ 2- Dual Screen and Controls \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ ----------- Controls ----------- A = Accelerate B = Brake Y = Toggle Map Sceen X = Use Item R = Hop L = Use Item START = Pause Touch Screen = Change Map/ Draw Decals/ Select Options ------------- Power Sliding ------------- Power sliding is a feature already previously used in the Mario Kart series and it has once again mades it's return. The feature is quite easy to use once mastered, a requires very little skill at all. To achieve a power slide it is best to wait until you come to a corner. It can be down on wide straights but poor handling will leave you in the mud. As you near a corner, tap and hold R to jump and then slide. To preform the power sliding, move the directional pads left and right, depending on which way you are turning. A blue spark should light up under the cars tyres if you are doing things right. Repeat so the tyres spark an orange colour and then either let loose for a quick boost of speed or hold to inch around the corner and then achieve the boost of speed. ------------ Rocket Start ------------ This is achieved by holding the Acceleration button as the countdown reaches 2 and the number stops expanding. If done correctly, the Rocket Start will give you a boost of speed at the begining of the race. -------------- Screen Display -------------- The top screen features the action of Mario Kart DS. Using a similar HUD to recent Mario Kart titles, speed, weapon and Lap will be displayed in the Top Screen. The bottom screen (Touch Screen) will feature a detailed real-time map of the course which functions similia to a rear view mirror. Also featured on the bottom screen is the course Leaderboard. Below is what the in game screen will look like as well as a description of each parts significance. If you are dragging an item such as a banana or green shell the item will leave the item box and under can fill it. ----------- Current Lap: ----------- The Lap section functions as two things. The first, it display the number of laps in any given track. Normally most of them will be a standard 3 but the odd one like Baby Park will display 5. The other function is to display what number lap you are currently on. The latter is display first while the number of total laps displayed last. ----------- Race Screen: ----------- The race screen like all Mario Kart titles before it displays the bulk of the action. The character in which you have chosen will be located in this section of the screen during races and controlled depending on whats happening in this part of the screen. ----------- Current Position: ----------- This displays your current position. It will display as different colours depending on your position in the race. Silver for first and gradually making it's way to dark Red for last. ----------- Leaderboard: ----------- The leaderboard displays the current position of all the racers in the current race. In Grand Prix and Battle Modes it will display from 1-8. During Wi-fi matches it will display from 1-4. Depending on the number of players in local matches it will display the corresponding number of racers. ----------- Time: ----------- In normal Grand Prix, local and wifi games this will count upwards to display the amount of time it took you took complete any given track. In some Mission Run levels the time will count down from a pre-determined time. ----------- Map Screen: ----------- The Map Screen has two functions. Close up and map view. The Close Up view displays your character and rivals near by, showing you a small section of the overall map so you can see what is going on close to you. The map view spans out to show an entire view of the map, showing where all racers currently are. This can be good to seeing how far infront or behind you are, but makes it difficult to see oncoming items if your in close vicinity to your oppenents. /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ 3- Characters \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Confirmed Characters and their weight according to previous Titles. ---------------- Yoshi: Light Weight ---------------- Yoshi is the much loved side kick that has taken some time out from flappin to drag race. Acceleration: XXX Top Speed: X Off-Road: XXX ---------------- Toad: Light Weight ---------------- One of the fastest racers there are, Toad is a cunning racer on the track. A shame he and his brothers can never protect the Princess. As a new feature to Mario Kart DS, you only start a race with one inflated balloon and must manually inflate the other two. The corners are long and allow for some quick power sliding and is easy to negoiate being quite long and quite wide. The track starts near with a long stretch so a quick Rocket Start will give you a good head start. The track then bends left but do not power slide right away. Wait until your about halfway through the bend before power sliding. You can choose to hold the powerslide as you go around the bend or quickly use two power slides, either will work. The road from here is narrow and straight and a number of item boxes are placed at either end. The track then bend right, so again, powerslide around once to stick closer to the edge or power slide twice. From here it's a quick dash to the finish line. Rinse and repeat for the next two laps. The track is very wide so it is easy to avoid banana's and shells. It can be harder to catch up at times however unless you recieve a good item to catch up with the leaders. ------------- Yoshi Falls * ------------- ----------------- Length: Very Short Difficulty: Easy ----------------- XXX XXXXXX XXT XXX XXX XXX XXX XXX XXX TXX XX TXX == TXX XX XXX XX XXX XXX XX XXX XX XX XX XX XX XXX XXXXXX XX XXXXXXTTXX XXXXXX Yoshi falls is located in the middle of some exotic mountains with multiple waterfalls cascading down the Mountains side. The track is simple enough with multiple speed boosts covered the track and speed boost an easy thing to master. The waterfalls allow for a quicker corner but can wash you away if your not careful enough. Also using the waterfall route you will miss out on potential speed boosts that could give you the advantage but taking the dangerous waterfall route is shorter than taking the other. You start the race heading north on a small straight. From here you can either go above along the small bridge for some items, or take a shorter route through the waterfall. I suggest getting an item early on in the race, so take the longer route. From here you will weave right towards another bridge and waterfall. The waterfall here is quite long and can only be tackled quickly by using a star or mushroom. Taking this route without these items will slow you down. Take the bridge for some speed boosts. The track then weaves a few times and continues going right. Alot of power sliding is recommended at this stage. You the come across a number of power boosts. Use these to take you to the last of the three waterfalls. The nice addition to the track is trees that will move to hinder your route and get in the road when you least expect it. The off track sections make for some quick short cuts but for the characters with poor off road will slow them down quite alot. Some windy hills will make for some quick boosts ahead of the competition and a couple of Mushroom required short cuts will cut seconds of your time. A fairy short map at around 30 seconds per lap. At the end of each Mission you are awarded with a rank level. The ranks are, 3 Stars (XXX) 2 Stars (XX) 1 Star (X) A B C D 3 Stars is the highest ranking that is awarded and D is the lowest. The strategies listed below are ways in which to recieve a 3 star rating. Difficulty of reaching this rating is also listed below. I will rank the difficulty with the following ratings. Too Easy! -------- Mission and 3 star rating is simple to recieve. Easy ---- Mission is easy and requires little to no skill. Normal ------ The Mission requires some skill for a 3 star rating. Touchy! ------ Mission requires skill and may prove difficult. Hard ---- 3 star rating is hard to get and awesome skill will be required. Ouch! ----- 3 star rating is near impossible and requires god-like skills. ------- World 1 ------- - - - - - - - | Mission 1-1 | - - - - - - - ------------------------------------------------ Description: Drive through all 5 numbered gates in order! Character: Toad Difficulty: Easy ------------------------------------------------ To get a 3 Star rating firstly get a boost at the start. Then after clearing the first tyre use the mushroom to blast through the next. Do this on the third and fourth as well, ensuring that you do not hit the tyres at all. Pass through the last with at least 18 seconds to spare. - - - - - - - | Mission 1-2 | - - - - - - - ------------------------------------------------ Description: Collect all 15 coins! Character: Peach Difficulty: Normal ------------------------------------------------ Just go steady and easy in this one. Collect the coins and do not miss a single one, do not go back for one if you miss it, restart if thats the case. To get a 3 star rating, finish with at least over 18.5 seconds left on the clock. Do not bother drifting as it may result in you missing one of the coins. - - - - - - - | Mission 1-3 | - - - - - - - ------------------------------------------------ Description: Destroy all 10 item boxes! Character: Yoshi Difficulty: Easy ------------------------------------------------ This one is too easy. Just use the mushrooms that the boxes give to you and use the speed boosts on the track. A 3 star rating is easy to accomplish. - - - - - - - | Mission 1-4 | - - - - - - - ------------------------------------------------ Description: Get the Star and use it to hit 5 Cheep Cheeps! Character: Wario Difficulty: Normal ------------------------------------------------ If your not careful this Mission can get a little frustrating. Take it slow and easy and you should be able to take out the fish with the use of only one star. Destroy them in order as well so you don't have to got back for any which will affect your time and overall rank. - - - - - - - | Mission 1-5 | - - - - - - - ------------------------------------------------ Description: Drive through all 6 numbered games in order! Character: Toad Difficulty: Easy ------------------------------------------------ This mission is played on the Battle Track, Nintendo DS. The aim is to simply drive through 6 tyres that are scattered across this Battle Map. It is quite easy to achieve a 2 star rating on this mission if you simply drive through all the tyres but to achieve a 3 star I suggest using the power sliding technique right after tyre one so you blast right through tyre two. Get over 18 seconds remaining for 3 stars. - - - - - - - | Mission 1-6 | - - - - - - - ------------------------------------------------ Description: Drive out of the mansion... backwards! Character: Luigi Difficulty: Too Easy! ------------------------------------------------ This is probably the easiest of all of the missions in world one. You start at one end of the mansion from the track "Luigi Mansion" and must drive to the other only using the reverse button. Just stick close to the walls and drive straight for the end. A 3 star rating should be as easy to get as pie. - - - - - - - | Mission 1-7 | - - - - - - - ------------------------------------------------ Description: Collect all 20 coins! Character: Donkey Kong Difficulty: Easy ------------------------------------------------ Played on a portion of the Moo Moo Farm track you have to collect over 20 coins with three mushrooms at the start to give you an extra boost of speed. The first group of coins you should simply use the mushroom boosts to collect and then as you come to the Monty Moles, use a power slide around the corner to speed up to the last coins. - - - - - - - | Mission 1-8 | - - - - - - - ------------------------------------------------ Description: Preform 4 power-slide turbo boosts in 1 lap! Character: Mario Difficulty: Touchy! ------------------------------------------------ This mission does prove difficult simply because of the fact that it says only four power slides are required but to achieve a 3 star rating you'll need to do at least 6. Use each corner to preform your power slides as normal and stick as close to the edges of the track as possible. Keeping that in mind if you hit the dirt, restart. Mission must be completed with 19 second remaining for a 3 star rank. - - - - - - - | Mission 1-B | - - - - - - - ------------------------------------------------ Description: Use mushrooms to crash into the Big Bully and knock him off the stage Character: Yoshi Difficulty: Easy ------------------------------------------------ In the first of many boss battles, you are bitted against Big Bully of which we all know and love from Super Mario 64. This time, you are on a large platform surrounded by water and Big Bully is standing in the middle, as angry as ever. What I did to achieve the 3 star rating, use a rocket start and blast past him. He will charge to where you previously were, leaving himself open near the water. Quickly hit the item box that was behind him, spin around and use mushrooms to blast him into the water. If done properly, it should take less than 10 seconds. Mario Kart DS is no exception, a recent interview with Hideki Konno confirming that they are incorporating “DS- original items”. The first announced new item being a Gooper Blooper, a squid character featured in Super Mario Sunshine. The Gooper Blooper spits out ink and if you are the victim you cannot see the upper screen as it because covered in ink for a certain amount of time. During this time you must rely on the Bottom Screen, making use of the two screens quite well. In this option, friends are randomly selected from your friends list and
