Atelier is the French word for workshop, and frequently used as a loanword in Japanese, but that's not what we're really talking about here. Gust's Atelier series is a quirky little series of niche games, originally for the Saturn, but later brought to such systems as the Dreamcast, Playstation 1 & 2, WonderSwan, Gameboy Color and Advance, and now the DS. In all the games in this series, there is a heavy emphasis on item creation and resource management, with plots that are about as far from centralized and epic as they can get. In this series, you have goals set before you, and it is your mission to try and meet them. The plot is at most loosely connected to this endeavor, and focuses more on character interaction than the typical "save the world" plotline. ---So, what about Atelier Iris? The Iris games are a spin-off series made to cater to the more mainstream RPG market. Atelier Lise is not part of the Iris continuity, but instead is much closer to the "core" series. Anyone who buys this game expecting something like the Iris series will be in for a surprise (hopefully a nice one ^_^) ------->The Story Lisette Lander, youngest daughter of the royal family of the Kingdom of Lander, never had a care in the world. Her father was an easy-going sort who wanted everyone to be happy, and there was always some fun to be had in the castle. That is, until the creditors came a-knocking. It turns out the Lander lifestyle was largely funded by loans from the Rockheim Bank, the primary financial institution for the entire continent. His Highness had overreached his credit limits, and if the debt could not be paid off by the appro- priate date, then the entire kingdom would be foreclosed upon, and become the property of the bank. The princess, not willing to be a burden to her parents, and determined to do what she could to help, ran away to the neighboring Kingdom of Ordre so she could find a way to pay off the debt. With the last of her money, she was able to buy a small house on the edge of the city of Mythreen. From this base she intends to secure her kingdom's future, through the local boom industry: Alchemy. Everybody and their grandma seems to practice alchemy in Ordre these days, and the testing requirements for the beginner's license are ridiculously easy. With the aid of a new friend in town, Lisette, now calling herself Lise, is able to set up shop, and hopefully make enough money to buy back her kingdom. Best of luck, Lise. -------->The Goals As in all the core Atelier games, there is a certain goal to be met, namely paying off the Lander family debt. This is not easy, however, as the debt currently stands at around $870,004,800, and the foreclosure date is only about 3 years away. However, during the course of the game, you will hear tell of a mysterious item the Rockheims are desperate to get their hands on, and for which they are willing to promise a blank check to anyone who can provide the goods. So, two goals: 1) raise enough money to pay off the debt (gonna take a long time) or 2) find or create the Arcanas Gem, and trade it for your family's debt. (still difficult, but possible) =======================How to Play========================= -----In the workshop This is an Atelier game, so much of your time will be spent in the workshop, making stuff. The game gives a basic tutorial, but here's an overview: Step 1) Open the alchemy menu through the main menu, or simply step up to the alchemy cauldron and press A. Step 2) Choose the item you wish to make. Items come in five categories: Battle Items, Medicines, Accessories, Food, and Miscellaneous, this last category being the largest and most varied. Step 3) If you have the required ingredients for the recipe, you can proceed. You have the option of adding an Essence (more on this later). You will also have to choose which piece of alchemical equipment to use in making your item. Different equipment has different effects on item creation. Again, more on this later. Step 4) Occasionally, you will have to play a minigame at this point. This is just something that pops up from time to time, and it's not too bad. For instance, the very fact that the game starts means that your recipe has not failed, and the game gives you the chance to increase the amount of the item produced, or even upgrade the item to something you wouldn't ordinarily be able to make. ---So, how do we get recipes? You start off with a few basic recipes that you get with the beginner's license. After that, almost all the recipes need to be bought from stores. As your alchemy level goes up, more books (and equipment) will become available to you. ---And the ingredients? A lot of ingredients can be bought from the stores, but not everything is regularly in stock. For a lot of stuff, you'll have to go out and find it yourself. This can be hazardous, so be sure to bring friends along to cover your butt. As you go up in adventurer levels, you'll be able to find more items more easily. ---We make money off of this? Yup! There are two ways to make money in Atelier Lise. The first is to take commissions from Jimson in the Pub. These are jobs requesting a certain number of a certain item by a certain date. Some commissions can bring in a lot of cash. Also, from time to time people will drop by with their own commissions. You can drop off these items at the Pub as well. There's a marking system for the jobs list that Lise comes up with to help sort things a bit: Sun mark: no problems, I already have enough in stock! OK mark: I don't have enough right now, but I can make more! Unhappy Lise mark: Um... What's that? I dunno how to make it Question Mark: I've heard of it, but can't make it now, sorry Note: The game glitches sometimes, and marks unknown items on the jobs list as OK. Be careful, esp. towards the start, when Jimson asks you for Mega-Uni or similar items. The second way to make money is to sell your items at the People's Marketstand, which is the little wagon-like thing in Mythreen Square. You can set up to twelve items for sale there, with whatever price you wish. You can even set it for $999,999,999, though no one would ever pay that much for any- thing. This is also the best way to offload any unnecessary battle equipment you might have in storage. -----------------Special Characteristics------------------- ----What's with this job? It's asking for a "cool" item? Ah, here we have the complicated part, item characteristics. There are three ways to add a special characteristic to an item you make. 1) Special ingredients: When making a recipe, note which ingredients have stars next to their names. Those ingredients are considered key, and can be used to alter the results of a recipe. This doesn't happen correctly all the time, but seems to work better with higher level tools. Examples: Cheesecake recipe: Milky Gems are a key item. Use a nice- smelling Milky Gem to add that characteristic to the cheesecake Barrel recipe: Golden barrel fragments from the Petrified Forest can be used to make Golden Barrels Black Soup recipe: White Wikky Nuts from the Starstruck Ruins can switch this item from black to white Attack Globe recipe: Use a large Oak Sapling in this recipe to get oversized Attack Globes every time. 2) Added Essence There are 6 varieties of Essence (chuwazai, or neutral solution) in the game: Essence of Magic Grass, Essence of Lando Berry, Essence of Milky Gem, Essence of Bug-Eyed Fish, Essence of Dark Shroom, and Essence of Coron Horn. Whatever the characteristic of the ingredient item is, that will be added to the Essence, and if you add that Essence to another recipe, there's a good chance the resulting item will share the characteristic IF THAT ITEM ALREADY HAS THE POTENTIAL TO HAVE IT. Note that you can have multiple versions of the same essence, but cannot choose between them while preparing a recipe, so it's better to make these items on an as-needed basis. Examples: Choux Cream recipe: By adding Essence of Dark Shroom (either white or black), you can change the color of this item. No other colors are possible, however. Cocoron recipe: by adding Essence of Milky Gem (nice smell), you get very fragrant little candies Castella cake recipe: by adding Essence of Bug-Eyed Fish (gold), you get golden cakes. Again, this is the only possible color change you can get Jewel Ice recipe: with the right essences, you can change this item to green, purple, orange, or gold. 3) Spontaneous item alteration This one is the hardest to figure out. At equipment levels 5 and 6, there's a good chance your items will come out differently than what you intended. As it turns out, each of the five tools has specific characteristics that it can impart to items you make. At level 5, the odds are 50% that this might happen, while at level 6 it's 100%. What this means is, out of the possible outcomes for that item, there will be a bit of a shuffle, and your item may come out different. The following equipment gives the following characteristics: Alchemy cauldron: golden, yellow, white, or green items Cooking tools: yellow, green, mini, or orange items Flask (mixing tools): cool, nice-smelling, high-quality, or purple items Forge: white, cool, large, or orange items Alchemy Egg: green, high-quality, high-power, or purple items If you are making an item with a high-level tool, then any characteristic that item may receive from that tool becomes possible. The odds of getting that characteristic are split depending on the total number of possible outcomes. So, for example, if you're making Cheese, and use the Alchemy Cauldron at level 5, there's a 50% chance of a shuffle occuring, of which the only possible outcome is golden cheese, because the other three characteristics aren't available for that item. Likewise, if you're using the cooking tools, that same cheese may turn out orange instead. If you want a normal cheese, you'd better use an item lower than level 5, or the Alchemy Egg, which does not impart any qualities that the cheese recipe can receive. ----Sounds like a lot of work. What's the point? Well, any job you take which requests a specific type of item will still pay up if you deliver a normal item instead, which is good news. The bad news is, they'll only pay a fraction of what you would otherwise have received. So, to get the most profit, you'd better make more items with special traits. Also, items with special characteristics will sell for more at the People's Marketstand than their regular counterparts will. -----------------Tools of the Trade---------------------- ----OK, so now what's all this about equipment? In Atelier Lise, there are five major sets off equipment that you can use to make items. This is a bit different from prev- ious games, in that you can use any piece of equipment to make almost any item, interchangeably. Equipment impacts the success rate for that attempt, and possibly adds a new trait to the item, as mentioned above. These five sets of items are: The Cauldron. The staple tool of any mystic scientist, this large pot stands bubbling in the middle of your workshop. Try not to cackle too much while stirring. It comes with your house, apparently. It is best used to make Miscellaneous items. The Cooking Utensils. These handy tools can be bought as a set from Berta the bubbly item shop owner. They are best used to make food items, understandably enough. The Mixing Tools. Represented by a Flask, these tools can only be used to make recipes with three ingredients. They are best used to make Medicines. The Forge. This item is for heat-intensive recipes, and is best used to make Battle Items or Accessories. The Alchemy Egg. This strange and mysterious item is available from the alchemy store in Rodmark. No one's sure exactly how it does what it does, but in skilled hands it makes pretty much any recipe easier. So, these are the item sets. As you use them, they will from time to time level up on their own, into a more powerful, more useful version of the same item. Higher levels means better chances for success when making items of a compatible type, and at levels 5 and 6 there's the chance of adding special traits to the items you make. --------------------Battles------------------------- ----What, there are battles too? Of course there are. This is still an RPG, even with all the rest of the stuff thrown in, and as far as I know, only one game in the entire series (the GBC paired set, for those who're wondering) has thrown out the concept of directed battles against monsters. Battles in Atelier Lise have a quasi-tactical feel to them, with your three party characters set up against an array of local monsters. Each turn, a character may either move or make an action (attack, defend, special, or item). Movement is a little odd here. Everything is determined by your starting position and orientation. That's your axis for the battle. You can move anywhere along that axis (i.e. indefinite movement sideways), but you can only move one space forward or back from your starting position per turn. A character's basic attack varies, depending on if they are physically or magically inclined. A physical attacker can hit targets up to two spaces away from them, while a magical attacker can hit pretty much anything that is lined up with them properly. All characters (and monsters) also have special techniques which can be convenient or useless, depending on the how the battle is going. A lot of these special techs have requirements, such as not taking an action for a turn before they can be used, and very few can be used in consecutive turns. While your characters are waiting for their special techs to become available, feel free to blast stuff with attack items instead. Your supplies of bombs, barrels, and whatnot are necessarily limited however, since Lise is the one who has to make it all. ----Are there bosses? Yup, but don't get too excited yet. Bosses in the Atelier main series are usually special events, and thankfully optional. In this game, boss monsters are all at level 51, and the weakest of the four has 9000HP. All the others have HP into the quintuple digits, so be prepared for loooooong battles or quick defeats when going against these guys. The unusual suspects: --The Terafungus. This oversized mushroom has been seen lurking around the Scent Road. It is the easiest of the four bosses --The Enchantress. This corseted cutie is the last of the magicians who once lived north of Flail, before their city was hit with by a meteor. Now she patrols the Starstruck Ruins, all that's left of her kingdom. --The Giant. This one-eyed green ogre is holed up in the Crystal Caves late in the game, and only appears after you have beaten the Enchantress. --Gemini. This two-headed dragon appears in the Starstruck Ruins after the other three have been defeated. It's...er... difficult. That's all I can say. ==================Who's With Me?====================== There are eleven playable characters in Atelier Lise, including the title heroine. Like most people of his profession in this series, he's also the local employment agency. If you want to make some money, go to him for some assignments Berta - This perky little 10-year-old lives with her grandfather. It's always been her dream to run her own shop, and eventually Grampa Basso finally caved in, adding a grocery annex to his weapons store. She's bringing in more money than he is now. Basso - While his granddaughter is all smiles and energy, old Basso is about as dour as can be. Many are surprised to find out they're related at all. His only reply is, "What, you expect a 10 year old girl to look like an old man?" Mira - A serene lady who's apparently the cleric of Highran Cathedral. She doesn't ever say much about herself, but she can tell you a lot about the history of Mythreen. Melchior - Marius' second-in-command, and definitely the more personable of the two. He respects his commander a lot, but thinks Marius needs to get out more. He strong-arms the captain into helping Lise. Polly - She runs the shopfront at Otomaru's House, and has the look of an Academy Alchemist (the purple hair's a bit of a giveaway). She has an older sister, though no one's quite sure if they've ever met her. Lipza - Everyone's a bit intimidated by the severe-looking Librarian of Rodmark's Great Library. She's nice enough to let you off with a warning, the first time at least. However, she's always willing to help people look for the knowledge they want. Otomaru - This elderly alchemist came to Ordre ages ago on a quest, and stayed to help spread the practice of alchemy to a new populace. All sorts of things have been said of him, but who knows how much is true? Carla - A tough-as-nails gal in a raccoon muffler. She runs the day-to-day operations of Greygo's Weapons Emporium. She's wonderfully enthusiastic about her job. Nitt - This odd young woman is... rather... zoned out... at times. She tries her best to peddle her wares in Flail's Grand Bazaar, but her own demeanor works against her. King Ordre - He's brought a new age of prosperity to his part of the continent, but now that the Rockheim Bank is making the moves on his southern neighbor, he's got more things to worry about. Princess Lulu - She's been busy with her studies lately, but the princess still likes to get away from time to time to visit her good friend Lolotte. She's certain she recognizes Lise from somewhere, but that's not likely, now is it? Prince Joel - The heir to the throne, Joel is too preoccupied with his father's plans for arranged marriages to say much. He's still wondering why there's been no word back from Lander about a potential marriage alliance. the Faeries - These little guys in green are everywhere, it seems. If you have a sign of friendship, like a ring or something, they'll start showing up all over the place. the Coron - From the slopes of Mt. Greugnet, the Coron is an insanely cute little mountain goat-like creature. Lise is sure there must be some way to make money off of them. the Wikky - Quite unlike the cute little Coron, the Wikky is about as big a sourpuss as can be. Really nice hair, though. ====================Getting Around====================== Choosing destinations in Atelier Lise is very simple. As soon as you exit a building you are presented with a list of avail- able locations, both in-town and outside. From Mythreen you can travel to five adventure regions and the three other towns. From Rodmark you can travel to three adventure regions, and from Flail you can access the last two. ----Mythreen: Low Town The merchant district of the capitol, the Low Town is where the Pub, the shops, and Lise's workshop are located. ----Mythreen: High Town The political hub of the capitol, the High Town contains the King's Palace, the Cathedral, the Hexenritter Headquarters, and Mythreen Square. ----Rodmark Rodmark is the center for learning in Ordre Kingdom. It was founded long ago by the Sage Otomaru, who still lives there. His home is also where young alchemists go to learn more about their craft. Nearby is the Great Library. ----Flail Formerly a fortress set high in the mountains, Flail has since prospered as a mecca for metalworkers and weaponsmiths. If you need a superb weapon, head for Flail. The Grand Bazaar there also has an assortment of interesting items. ----Faerie Forest The secret home of the Faeries, only those who have a Faerie Ring and the best wishes of the little people can visit. Unfortunately, they aren't available for hire in this game, but they do have a nice selection of rare items. ==================Where Are We Going?=================== There are ten Adventure Areas in which you can go looking for alchemy ingredients and monsters. These cover a fairly wide range of terrain. When in an area, you can pan around a bit, until you get a big "!" sign, which means you've found either items or monsters. Occasionally, this also means you've triggered a mini-game. There's one mini-game available in each area, though some of them share games. More on that later. Items and monsters are rated * to ***** for rarity. As your adventurer level goes up, you find more types of items If only one type of an item is available, and it's the default characteristic, I won't bother mentioning the characteristic. ----Lake Ploiss Round Trip from Mythreen: 1 day This is the first area in the game for you to explore, and a couple very important basic items are available here. The last remnants cling to their magic and lifestyle on the edges, but they don't take to strangers very well. If you're daring, however, you can pry some very rare minerals out of the cliff walls. Bring a pickaxe for the mini-game! items: Wikky Nut (normal) ** Meteor Fragment ** (at adventurer level 7) Green Ore ** (at adventurer level 14) Wikky Nut (nice smell) ** Wikky Nut (white) ** (at adventurer level 20) Uni / Urchin (golden) * News (golden) * Wikky Nut (golden) * Phoenix Feather (golden) * monsters: Stone Golem ** Iron Golem ** Golden Golem *** Bodyguard ** Commander *** Light Elemental *** Water Elemental *** Blood Elemental *** Lesser Dragon *** Dragon ** Elder Dragon ** (bosses) Enchantress Gemini ====================What Are We Doing?===================== Now it's time to talk about mini-games. There are thirteen mini-games in Atelier Lise, all but two of which require the use of the touchpad. Eight of these games take place in the workshop, while the other five occur in various areas on the map. Why play mini-games? Playing the workshop games will either increase the amount of an item produced, or upgrade it to a better item. This last one can be annoying, if you're trying to make a lower-level item and keep getting high-level stuff, but most of the time it's a nice surprise. Most workshop games feature a little crystal ball in the background. If the ball fills up with purple, you've succeeded. Out in the field, gathering games are often the best chance you have of grabbing a lot of items at one time. This game can get a little frustrating at times if you're looking for a specific ingredient, so the chance to grab 20-30 of that item in a short period of time is nothing to be sneezed at. Atelier Lise provides in-game directions for most of the mini-games, so this will be pretty short. -------------------Workshop Mini-games------------------ #1 Double, double, toil and trouble This is the Cauldron's mini-game. Tap each dot as it appears on the touch-screen. They will be going in either a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. Very easy. #2 The Oven Game This is the Cooking Utensils' mini-game. Here we have a rotary handle, which is used to turn the pot slowly inside the oven. Note the gauge on the upper screen. What we want to do is turn the handle fast enough to get to the marked spot on the gauge, then slow down so as to stay on that spot as long as possible. #3 The Mixing Game This is the Flask's mini-game. Here, you need to -carefully- tug on each of the chains, in order to fill the appropriate fraction of the pie chart with the appropriate color (representing one ingredient). If you go over, the recipe is ruined, and you have to start the game over. Failing will not cause your recipe to fail, however. This is just for the bonuses. For the fourth section of the pie chart, you need to use one of the bottles of alchemist's spice on the left side of the screen. #4 The Bellows Game This is the Forge's mini-game. Note the gauge on the left-hand side of the screen. You need to blow into the microphone just enough to push that gauge up to the mark, and try and keep it there. Not too hard. #5 The Polishing Game This is the Alchemy Egg's mini-game. You need to move the polishing rag in short, even strokes until every part of the golden dome is shining. This game is a bit frustrating, because it's difficult to tell what parts you haven't done, and if you lag too much, Lise gets mad and you lose time. #6 Bug-zappers This game is not connected to an item, but happens occasion- ally at high levels. It uses the D-pad. Giant bugs have invaded the workshop! Armed with her trusty bug-spray, Lise must kill those bugs before they get her! Grab the stars for points adding to the item outcome. #7 Chopping Wood Again, this is not connected to any particular item, but just happens from time to time. Lise needs extra firewood! Drag the stylus down along each piece of wood to chop it in half. More wood means bigger bonus. #8 Where's the Sprocket? One of the workshop tools needs a replacement sprocket in order to work right. But can Lise find it in time? The chest has nine drawers it could be hiding in, but you only have three chances to find it in time. -------------------Gathering Games------------------- There are 10 areas, and 5 games, so there's a bit of overlap at times. All but one of these games requires an item of some sort, and two of them require expendable items at that. In general, you will get items common to that area, and the possible items change from day to day. #1 The Waterfall Catcher location: Moritz Falls This is a very easy game to activate, just by keeping the falls between the arrows on the screen, and pressing left and right quickly. The activation spot is somewhere in the middle of the falls, so so it's easy to land on several times in a row, with practice. In this game, various items are falling over the falls (three types of items, vary by day). Catch three in a row to get a bonus (larger number of items). Catch four or five in a row to max out that item in your inventory. #2 The Nets Game location: Lake Ploiss, Shadewest Beach First, choose a net to use, then run your stylus along the arrows in the direction shown to thrown it. Reverse direction to pull it back in. Better quality nets means more items, and less chance of the net breaking. Don't bother using the basic nets for this, as they only give a couple items and break really easily. Save up and make the hyper nets instead. #3 The Pickaxe Game location: the Crystal Caves, Starstruck Ruins, Mt. Greugnet For this game, you need to choose a pickaxe to use first. You will see several sparkling lights in the background. Tap on those to see what's there. Not all lights have items, and there's a chance that the pickaxe will break each time. #4 The Butterfly Net Game location: the Scent Road, Pillary Plains This game is activated after you create a Faerie Ring. From time to time you will meet little Faeries. You will see the items available for a half-second, then they'll be hidden. You have a set number of chances to grab an item by tapping it with the stylus. If you have good hand-eye coordination, you'll have enough chances to get everything. If you can remember the items well enough, try to get three or more in a row for a bonus. #5 The Vine-Pull location: the Sea of Green, the Petrified Forest This game is activated after you create a Faerie Ring. If you meet a Faerie in these areas, they'll give you a chance at an all-or-nothing lucky dip game. There are four vines. One has the goods attached. Pull the right one to get it all. =============Basic Storyline / Plot Guide============== This is just a basic guide to what's going on. It is likely I will be making some heavy redactions to this from time to time, as I know I am currently missing several minor side stories.
All of these scenarios are intended to work around the odd schedules that are the norm for the core Atelier series. Since there's a calendar in effect, and the protagonist needs to travel a lot to get stuff (during which time no scenes can occur), there's a lot of leeway on when everything can occur. In this game, there are very few events connected to a specific timeframe, and all scenarios can be done concurrently, except where the start of one interferes with another (Kleon and Hilda's scenarios, mainly). -------Starting up--------- The game story starts up just after Lise signs the lease on her new house, and moves in. Alf shows up, wondering who's now living in the old “spook house”. Introductions are made, and Alf explains that he is an alchemist. Lise, smelling the potential for money, nags Alf into teaching her the basics and helping her get the beginner's alchemy license in Rodmark. The sequence ends with Lise successfully making Distilled Water. ----Around town Talk to Jimson in the Pub to have the job list explained. Talk to Berta and Basso in the item shop for a laugh. You can have several conversations with Berta over the course of the game. In the second conversation, Berta explains that Basso's her grandfather. When Lise talks to him after that, all he says is “What, you're surprised that a little girl doesn't look like an old man?” Talk to Mira at the Cathedral several times during the course of the game to learn more about the history of Mythreen, including several tales of the city's namesake, the heroic sorceress Mythreen and her companions. Sometimes when you visit Mythreen Square, you'll overhear conversations and rumors, such as what the Rockheim Bank is doing, or news about the Millennium Palm, after you unlock Shadewest Beach. After you visit Rodmark, you should hear rumors about Rockheim Bank in the Pub from time to time. ----Unlocking areas Lake Ploiss: Make one or two items in your shop at the beginning. Lise will then go to the Pub to find out how to get more ingredients. Jimson will suggest going to the lake. Moritz Falls: Jimson will tell you about this spot if you've visited Lake Ploiss at least once, and 20 days have passed since he told you about the lake. Mt. Greugnet: Talk to Alf in the Pub after you've visited Moritz Falls, and he should tell you about Mt. Greugnet. Rodmark: Talk to Alf in the Pub at least 20 days after he told you about Mt. Greugnet, and he should tell you about the town of Rodmark The Sea of Green: Talk to Lipza in the Library of Rodmark to learn about this area. Crystal Caverns: Talk to Jimson in the Pub at least 10 days after you hear the rumors about Rockheim Bank in the Pub. Pillary Plains: Talk to Jimson in the Pub at least 40 days after you hear about the Crystal Caverns. Flail: Talk to Jimson in the Pub at least 30 days after you hear about the Pillary Plains. Petrified Forest: Talk to Greygo in Flail to learn about this area. Faerie Forest: You need to make a Faerie Ring to learn about this area. Shadewest Beach: Talk to Jimson in July or August of year 2 or year 3 to learn about this area. Scent Road: Talk to Poin at least 40 days after unlocking Shadewest Beach. You must have already gone through Poin's scenarios before you can unlock this area. Starstruck Ruins: Talk to Jimson in the Pub at least 40 days after unlocking the Scent Road in order to learn about this area. ----Marius Sachsen About 5 days into the game or so (depending on how much time you spend in the lab), Lise will decide to go walking around town. Eventually, she'll be in an area she doesn't recognize. Marius asks her what she's doing here, then tells her to leave the knight's barracks immediately. About 10 days after that, if you visit Mythreen Square, your bag will be snatched by a thief. Marius witnesses the crime, and catches the purse-snatcher. Go to the Hexenritter HQ after that, and talk to Melchior. Lise wants to find Marius so she can give him a reward for helping her, not realizing exactly who her rescuer was. When Marius does show up, he turns down the offer of a reward. As they leave, it's apparent you left a favorable impression on Melchior. About 10 days after the reward offer, Marius will show up at the atelier, to offer his services as bodyguard. The only explanation he'll give is “Melchior had a few words with me.” There's another Marius scenario involving a sword, but I haven't had the chance to explore this one yet. ----Lolotte the Flirt About 3 days after the start of the game, if you enter Mythreen Square, you'll meet a beautiful girl. She'll subject Lise to some intense scrutiny, then render judgment on style. She doesn't realize Lise is a girl until Alf shows up and mentions it, as apparently Our Heroine dresses too tomboyishly for her tastes. About 10 days later, she'll show up at the atelier. Show her around, and she'll offer to go with Lise on excursions. Home is just too boring at the moment, according to her. From then on, there will be several conversations in Mythreen Square from time to time, on the subject of proper flirting. At one point, Alf is roped into helping Lise practice her technique, but Lise accidentally scares him off. ----Ealie Mitter, Eligible Bachelor About 40 days into the game, Ealie will show up at the atelier, wondering who's bought the old spook-house. He doesn't seem too happy that someone's living there, but whatever he was going to say, at the sight of Lise he shuts up entirely, and leaves quickly. Apparently it's love at first sight, for him. 5 days later, he'll show up and ask Lise to be his girlfriend. She turns him down flat, but it takes him a moment for his ears to catch up to his mouth. 10 days after this, he'll show up again to offer his protection for when Lise goes out of town. A few days later, Lolotte will show up to warn you against dating Ealie. Apparently, every girl in town is enamored with him, and it wouldn't do to make that many enemies in Mythreen. If you examine the People's Marketstand in Mythreen Square after this point, Ealie will explain how to use it. From time to time you'll see Ealie with his fanclub in Mythreen Square. There seems to be another storyline involving Ealie, but I haven't had the chance to explore it yet. ----Alf's Father A day after you unlock Moritz Falls, Alf should show up in the Pub. You can talk to him to find out why he became an alchemist. His dad was an apothecary, and Alf has always been interested in that sort of thing. He passed the beginner's license when he was 11. If you put Alf in your party for a while, you'll find out that he has a metal allergy, which is why he prefers wooden weapons. About 30 days after you hear about this allergy, Alf and his dad will have a big fight. You'll find out about this if you visit Mythreen Square around that time. You'll have to build up Lise's friendship level with Alf for this to occur. 60 days after the fight, Alf's dad will come down with a bad fever. Find out about this in the Pub. Again, keep building on Alf's friendship in order to continue with this scenario. After another 20 days, you can have a conversation with Alf in the Pub. There's a medicine out there that could help his dad, but it requires alchemy to make, and Alf's afraid he's not good enough to pull it off. At any time after this, if you can make some Quality Medicine (item 128, recipe is in one of the later books obtained from the Cathedral), give it to Alf so that his dad can get better. ----Sleepy Hilda All you have to do to meet Hilda is exit the atelier at the very beginning of the game, and then go back in. She'll pop in behind you and ask how you're doing. Lise doesn't know what to make of her, but finally decides Hilda's an inspector from the Alchemist Guild, checking up on the new rookie. If you make any kind of food item, Hilda will show up again, and comment on how good it smells. When Lise offers her some, Hilda replies that she just likes the smell, but that she doesn't eat. Lise interprets this as Hilda being on a diet. If Lise asks her why everyone refers to the atelier as the spook house, Hilda clams up and refuses to speak. About 20 days after that conversation, Lise will have another with Hilda. The sleepy lady is trying to remember something, but has no idea what that might be. 10 days after that conversation, Lise suggests that she and Hilda walk around the atelier, to see if anything jogs her memory. Hilda agrees, then promptly walks through Lise without stopping. The item she was trying to remember was that she's a ghost. How that managed to slip her mind, we shall never know. If you go out of town and come back a few days later, Hilda will ask to join you on your item-hunting excursions. It's just so dull in the atelier sometimes... ----Coron the Cute, Wikky the Weird After 180 days, Coron should show up on Mt. Greugnet, and Wikky will appear on the Pillary Plains. Lise thinks Coron is the cutest little thing she's ever seen. There are four scenes with just Coron, each available 30 days after the previous. In the second scene, Lise realizes the marketability of the Coron, which takes the opportunity to run off while Lise is still dreaming up merchandising. This continues into the third scene as well. In the fourth, Lise witnesses the Coron eating a big, juicy bug, and is a bit disillusioned about its cuteness after that. If 30 days have passed since seeing both the Coron and the Wikky, then if you visit Mt. Greugnet you will the Wikky there pestering the Coron. The following characters have funny scenes involving the Wikky, if you take them to the Pillary Plains: Lolotte, Marius, Manon, and Poin. There's apparently a scenario set involving Eleore and the Wikky, but I haven't had a chance to explore it yet. ----The All-Powerful Poin! As mentioned in the character descriptions, Poin is a little psycho. When Lise first meets her in Otomaru House, Poin is convinced that Our Heroine is in fact an evil alchemist sent to defeat her in battle. This she deduces from the fact that Lise's color scheme is completely opposite her own, and in the magical girl stories Poin reads, being an opposite to the heroine automatically makes you the villain. If you talk to Alf in the Pub after this, he'll explain a bit more about Poin. If you go to Mythreen Square about 10 days after talking to Alf, Poin will show up. She's determined to track down and defeat her rival, i.e. Lise. Our Heroine smacks her around a bit, and Poin runs off in tears. Just not tough enough... 10 days after that, Poin is back in Mythreen Square, ready to take on her rival again! Too bad she's not any tougher than she was before. This time, Lise makes some comment about her family debt, and Poin gets all misty-eyed about this. She's a real sucker for a sob-story, and the romantic nature of trying to save one's family is just too much for her to stay mad at Lise. She graciously offers to lend a hand to her rival, in the name of love, goodness, and light. There's another scenario set involving Poin and the Elixir, but I haven't had a chance to explore it fully yet. ----Helping Greygo / The Candyman Not long after you meet Greygo at the Forgeron Weapons Shop in Flail, he'll start making requests when you walk into the store. These requests have no time limit, and they will not show up on your active jobs list. However, it behooves you to do it for Greygo, because the rewards are pretty good. About a week after you first meet him, Greygo will offer his services as a guard, but won't always be available for recruitment. Having him in the party does not affect the item quests he gives, though. 60 days after acquiring his services Request #1: Get 10 Regien Ore for him Reward: 4500 col, steel weapons become available at Forgeron. 60 days after Request #1, if Lise's adventurer level is > 16 Request #2: Get 10 Grasen Ore for him Reward: 8000 col, grasen weapons become available at Forgeron. 60 days after Request #2, if Lise's adventurer level is > 25 Request #3: Get 10 Meteor Fragments for him Reward: 20,000 col, platinum / holy weapons become available Also, about 40 days after he makes the first request, if Lise's adventurer level is 15 or higher, you can walk in on Greygo gorging himself on candies. He'll come out and admit that he has a massive sweet tooth, but that he's too much of a coward to tell anyone. He thinks it ruins his manly image. 10 days later, he'll ask if you could perhaps get him some Castella cakes, about 10? Get him his cakes, and he'll pay you. Then he'll inquire about perhaps getting some Chocolate? 10 pieces would be great. 10 pieces of Chocolate later, and he'll be asking for Jewel Ice. Again, 10 cups. After THAT, his sweet tooth is still going strong, so he asks Lise for a special cake, whatever she can make. 10 of them, of course. For that, you'll need to make some Atashi-no-keeki (My Cake, aka the Lisette Special). Once you give him enough cake, he'll reward you with his own special sweets recipe book. About a month after you finish feeding Greygo's sweet tooth, he'll finally admit to loving sugary foods, and convert part of the Forgeron's workshop area into a sweets factory. But not just any sweets factory... He'll present Lise with the fruits of his exhaustive research into cakes and candies: the Pudding Sword. Yes, he has managed to merge the disparate fields of cuisine and cutlery to produce some of the sweetest weapons ever to exist. Don't laugh too hard, because this is some of the best equipment in the game, often upping four stats at a time. Also, about a month after you start the sweet tooth quest line, if you bring Lolotte to Forgeron's, there'll be a short scene. Bring her back a month or two later for another scene, and finally a month after the second one, bring Hilda or Poin along for a strange but sweet scene with Greygo. ----The Would-be Exorcist Kleon, scion of a long line of exorcists, may show up anytime after 60 days have passed since Hilda realizing she's a ghost. However, he will not show up if Hilda is in the house at the time, or is in the active party, so this sequence can be postponed for quite a long time. He'll burst into the house, promising to remove the “evil influences” for Lise. When Hilda actually shows up, he's surprised that she looks like a young woman, but he's still determined to do his job. Too bad he's not strong enough. He leaves, promising to return. Later, you can talk to him in the Cathedral to learn more about him. Even though he's currently planning on exorcising one of your friends, he still offers to help you search for ingredients. He'll pop in again 10 days later (when Hilda doesn't appear in the house), but with no more success. Lise and Hilda make plans to prank poor Kleon the next time he shows up. The next time (at least 10 days later), Kleon will burst through the door to be confronted with a large number of objects flying towards his head. Eventually, after the fourth exorcism attempt, Kleon will change his mind about the whole business. Truth be told, he thinks Hilda's just too beautiful to be evil, and the affair is making him question his holy commitment to his job. He's in it to protect people, after all, and Hilda's about as nice as they come. So, if (job = protecting good people) and (Hilda = good) then (job = protecting Hilda). Talk to him a while later in the Cathedral to get the following conversation: K: So, um... if you don't mind me asking, what's Hilda's favorite food? L: She's a ghost. She doesn't eat. K: Um.. does she have any hobbies? L: She's a ghost. She pretty much sleeps all day. K: What kind of clothes does she like? L: She's a ghost, she doesn't wear clothes. K: Aw, come on! Be serious! L: I AM being serious, you moron! Etc. etc. etc. Long story short, Kleon is completely besotted with Hilda, and passionately declares that he'll find a way of returning her to life. Hilda agrees to support him in this, because “everyone needs a hobby, don't you think?” ----The Millennium Palm This is a short bit, which I've included here mainly because it nets you an item you need if you're ever going to make the Arcanas. Once you've visited Shadewest Beach at least once, go to Mythreen Square to hear about how the Millennium Palm, the last tree of its kind, is slowly weakening. Return when you know the recipe for the Plant Fertilizer (item 106, from “Mythreen Medicine”) to hear more. Once you've successfully made the Plant Fertilizer, head to the beach to use it. A few months later, you may overhear a conversation at Mythreen Square, saying that the Palm seems to have recovered a bit, and is starting to bloom. A month after the tree starts to bloom, its seeds will be ready for harvest. Alf rushes to tell Lise about this, but by the time she gets to the beach, there's only one left. Better make the best of it... ----Princess Lulu This one has a bit of lead-up, and won't happen at all if you don't build up Lise's friendship level with Lolotte by a large amount. Once their friendship is up to a high level, either Daisuki (really like) or Ichiban (Number 1 Friend), then there will be a scene at Mythreen Square, in which Lise and Lolotte discuss what kind of guy is their “type”. About 20 days after that, there's another scene at the square. Lolotte is royally pissed at her father for setting her up on another blind date (Japanese o-miai, or matchmaking) with some disgusting old fart. Another 20 days later, if Lise walks into Mythreen Square, she'll see Lolotte talking to a beautiful blonde girl about their age. The other girl will notice Lise first, and ask Lolotte to make introductions. Lolotte will then introduce Lulu. Lise is sure that she's heard the name before, and when Lolotte mentions as an afterthought that Lulu is the princess of Ordre, Lise's response goes “Oh yeah, right, that's where I... wait a minute, the PRINCESS??” Lulu takes it in stride, and soon the three are all chatting. The princess is sure she's seen Lise somewhere before, but that can't be right, now can it? She doesn't have much contact with commoners, and Lise isn't a princess herself, after all. Lise is very noncommittal when responding to that. If you come back a month later, Lulu will be back, and the three girls will chat about boys. Lolotte lets slip that Lulu's brother, Crown Prince Joel, is just her type, so Lulu decides to set up an o-miai date between the two of them at a later date. Before that can happen, though (30 days after previous scene), Lolotte has to undergo another disastrous blind date set up by her father, so she's not in the best of moods for a while. Another month later (if Lolotte is in your active party), Lulu will pop up wherever you are in town to tell Lise and Lolotte that she's managed to arrange a meeting with Joel, if Lolotte is still interested. Head over to Ploiss Lake with Lolotte still in your party for the date to happen. Lulu and Lise chat while it's going on. 30 days later you can have a conversation with Lolotte, in which she says Joel is just too childish, nothing like she'd imagined. She needs someone more mature, who can take care of her properly. Another 30 days later, and Lulu will show up at the atelier to give some commentary from Joel's side. Apparently he thinks she complains too much about everything. Guess it just wasn't meant to be... Finally, yet another 30 days later, Lolotte and Joel will make their goodbyes to each other in a final meeting in Mythreen Square. At least they're polite about it. ----The Super Monsters Here's how the four bosses are unlocked: Terafungus – after visiting the Scent Road once, talk to Jimson in the Pub to learn about it. Your adventurer level has to be at least 20. There'll be a 30% chance of encountering it after that point. After beating it, return to Jimson to hear how “Some adventurer, no one knows who” has defeated the monster. Enchantress – You need to know about the Starstruck Ruins, it has to have been 120 days since you learned of the Terafungus, and at least 60 days since you reached the 25% mark on the item index, in order for you to hear about the Enchantress. Marius will come by to warn you about her. Also, you need to be at adventurer level 30. From then on, there's a 30% chance of encountering it whenever you go to the Starstruck Ruins. Again, if you talk to Jimson after beating her, he'll mention that the Ruins are open for exploration again. Gigantes – after you beat the Enchantress, talk to Greygo in Flail to learn of a giant monster which has attacked several mining expeditions to the Crystal Caverns. You can do this 60 days after talking to Jimson about beating the Enchantress. After this, there'll be a 30% chance of encountering the boss whenever you get into a fight in the Crystal Caverns. Once more, if you talk to Jimson after beating it, you'll hear about the “mystery hero” who defeated the monster. By this point, Lise is getting pretty fed up with not getting any attention for her hard work. Be sure to talk to Greygo again after the battle. Gemini – you can activate this 100 days after the previous conversation with Greygo (after the Gigantes battle). Your adventurer level needs to be at 45 or higher. Marius will come by the atelier to warn you of a new super monster stalking the Starstruck Ruins. Again, the odds are 30% that you'll run into the monster. If you manage to beat it, talk to Jimson again to hear that the Ruins have been declared open again. While you never get any praise for your hard work (and beating these monsters is definitely that), defeating the four bosses will unlock the Dynamite Heroine ending of the game (provided you don't get the Arcanas or Big Money endings). ----The Legendary Arcanas Again, lots of lead-up for this one. Practically the entire game, in fact. First, after you return from Rodmark, you'll hear rumors in the Pub about the Rockheim Bank. Two months after the game starts, there'll be a notice posted in Mythreen Square about the Lander Kingdom foreclosure, in which the staggering 870,004,800 col debt is announced, along with the foreclosure date of April 30th, 847. Four months after you hear the rumors, you'll overhear a conversation between Lolotte and Alf in the Pub, about the fabled treasure of King Colandria. Six months after you hear the rumors, there'll be another conversation between Alf and Lolotte in the Pub, about King Colandria's greatest treasure, the Arcanas Gem. Eleven months after you first hear the rumors, the Rockheim Bank will post a reward offer for the Arcanas Gem in Mythreen Square. Four months after the reward is posted, Lolotte will run into the atelier with big news. The Rockheim Bank has yet to get their hands on the Arcanas, and have changed the terms of the reward. Instead of just a big bag of cash, the bank is now offering literally anything and everything to the person who can bring them that stone. Whatever that person wants. Lise is, naturally, ecstatic to hear this, and vows to be the one to get the gemstone first, for her family's sake. But how? If no one can find it, then perhaps someone will have to make one... (this part is a separate scene that occurs shortly after the one with Lolotte). Anytime after this epiphany, if your alchemy level is 25 or higher, you can go to the Rodmark Library and ask Lipza about it. Unfortunately, there don't seem to be any recipes conveniently available in the library... (note, if you can buy the fourth and final book from the cathedral store, then you're at alchemy level 26 – easy reference). For some reason, visiting the front of the library, and talking to Lipza inside the main library room are counted as two separate scenes. After talking to Lipza, you can start bugging Otomaru about the Arcanas. He'll admit to having synthesized an Arcanas gem at one point in his life, but will say nothing more about it, no matter how much you bug him, until you reach alchemy level 40. You'll just have to keep making high-level items until you think you're ready, because there's no way to accurately assess alchemy levels past 31 (with the purchase of “Otomaru's Notes” from the library). There's actually two different scenes you might get at this point, depending on whether or not you talked to Otomaru about the Arcanas before you reached level 40. Either way, you'll get the Arcanas recipe at this point. Once you get back to the atelier, Lise will examine the recipe, and feel a bit depressed, because the items required are so hard to find. Here's the recipe: 1 Dragohertz (common drop from the thre Dragon monsters) 1 Millennium Palm nut (from the Millennium Palm scenario) 1 Philosopher's Stone To get the Philosopher's Stone you need: Otomaru's Notes (for the recipe) 1 Donkelheit, any color (Rodmark or Petrified Forest) 1 Dragon's Tongue (Dragon enemies, or Lizard King) 1 Ether (World Soul Water) To get the Ether, you need: Otomaru's Notes (for the recipe) 1 World Soul (from any ghost or elemental enemy) 1 Quicksilver (rare item from Crystal Caverns) 30 days after you create the Arcanas, a messenger from the Rockheim Bank will show up to verify that you have it. From that point on, it's Happy Ending for everyone! Note, even if there doesn't seem to be enough time left before the time limit, it's possible to extend the game a few weeks by simply going into alchemy mode and making huge batches of items without stopping. Unlike previous games in the series, you can still choose to make stuff regardless of the time limit, and the game won't interrupt you for a long time. I can only assume this is to buy you enough time to get the Happy Ending. ----Alternate Endings Here are the various endings for the game. --Happy Ending, Arcanas: Simple enough. Make the Arcanas, and give it to the bank messenger when they come calling. Lise buys back Lander Kingdom for her family, and she can go home. --Happy Ending, Big Money version: If you can somehow make the full amount of the debt, all 870,004,800 col of it, then you can pay off the debt without the Arcanas. This is only really possible by playing a long series of games, accumulating the money through the New Game+ feature. --Girl Genius (100%) Ending: You get a special ending if you can completely fill out the item list, including all created items, ingredients, tools, books, and equipment. The Arcanas and Big Money endings will supercede this one, so it's only possible on a New Game+, since the item index carries over between games. --Iron Chef Lisette! Ending: This one is simple enough, make every single cooking item in the game in one playthrough. It is superceded by the Arcanas, Big Money, and Girl Genius endings. --Dynamite Heroine! Ending: Beat all four boss monsters to finally get some recognition for Lise's efforts against the forces of evil. It is superceded by the Arcanas, Big Money, Girl Genius, and Iron Chef endings. --Normal (Unsuccessful) Ending: This is what you get if none of the other endings' criteria are met. Lise acknowledges that she tried her best, but that her best just wasn't good enough. She apologies to the memory of her parents, and decides to settle down in Ordre for good. In the end, though, she prays to Mythreen for a second chance, and is rewarded with the New Game+ feature kicking in, returning her to April of 844 with all her money, to start over again. Best of luck, Lise. ---------------------The End---------------------------- ============What the heck is that?
